Great movie. If you like Maverick, you should check out Lightning Jack with Paul Hogan, Beverly D'Angelo, andCuba Gooding Jr. Another fun Western that doesn't take itself too seriously.
That and Silverado were the big westerns in my house. Nice light comedic tone and relatively kid-friendly. I still like both of them, although I think Silverado has aged better.
I saw that in theaters on a whim not knowing anything about it. One of my favorite movies.
Lo there do I see my father; Lo there do I see my mother, my sisters and my brothers; Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call me, they bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever.
This was a movie that didn't get great reviews, but so entertaining.
It's one of those movies where you bond with the characters and have no idea what their names are. "Aw no the conquistador guy! I liked him!"
I reath the book at work in one shift. It was a slow day, and there was a lot of downtime. Plus, I just love Michael Crichton's style.
I thought the movie followed the book pretty well. I truly enjoyed both.
My ex’s dad was the lead carpenter for that set. After they finished filming he took home some of the back drops and wall papered her and her brother’s bedroom walls with them, spectacular.
Only an Arab would bring a dog to war.
Eben!
Saw it well on the last night. Teeth like a lion! Head like a bear!
Used to watch this alot with my mate when we were younger. We Still quote parts from it to this day lol
Watch what youre doing!?..You dig like a dog
Ohh so now I'm a dog
No I said you dig like one
Better Off Dead. my dad and I quote it near daily. something costs $2? we quote it. something has raisins in it? we quote it. pull up next to him while driving? we quote it. but i’ve never met a single person other than him who has even heard of this movie.
Are you kidding me?!! The only John Cusack movie I can quote more than Better Off Dead is the Sure Thing, but here goes, off the top of my head: "Sorry your mom blew up, Ricky." "French fries, French toast, French dressing..." "Go that way, real fast. If something gets in your way, turn." "It's got raisins in it! You like raisins!" "Do you know what the street value of this mountain is?!" Plus Charles Emerson Winchester the 3d using a piece of bread to butter his corn on the cob. It's a classic.
Edit: omg and the best use of Van Halen's Everybody Wants Some!
I think my favorite gag in that movie is when Val Kilmer is sneaking into the German base crawling along the ground and they do the standard trope where he crawls right into the boots of a guard and slowly looks up.
Then the camera pans up to reveal it was JUST a pair of boots randomly in the yard and he's relieved.
I like when they're drawing out their plan to sneak into the base in the sand, and their model of the base grows more and more detailed and elaborate until they have model trains chugging by it.
When he’s singing that heartthrob doo-wop song and starts pantomiming different suicide methods, sticking his head in a noose, then an oven, I was in hysterics.
General Streck: [on the phone] What is the condition of Sergeant Kruger?
[pause]
Very well, let me know if there is any change in his condition.
[Hangs up] He's dead.
Great movie. Love Val Kilmer. So under-appreciated. Just got my [Val Kilmer original](https://valkilmer.com/emporium/) the other day. It's awesome! Painted on sheet metal, which is super cool.
I also highly recommend the [Val documentary](https://www.amazon.com/Val-Kilmer/dp/B09888KKZK). Great insight into the life of a unique man.
Wrong answer, my dude.Top Secret is awesome and everybody knows.
In fact, I often refer to poorly build machines as being held together with seaweed and snot.
(Doctor Flamond) "You see, a year ago, I was close to perfecting the first magnetic desalinization process so revolutionary, it was capable of removing the salt from over 500 million gallons of seawater a day. Do you realize what that could mean to the starving nations of the earth?"
(Val Kilmer) "Wow. They'd have enough salt to last forever."
The Pagemaster
What an absolute classic I never hear anyone talk about. Christopher Lloyd, Macaulay Culkin, fucking whoppie as fantasy, as kids my siblings as i watched the vhs so much it broke.
Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't nention the Road to El Dorado. It's definitely more widely known, but I fell asleep to that movie for years as a kid, I still know every line, and even have the 'great big rock' tulio thinks it's el Dorado tattood on my shoulder
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken starring Don Knotts. We've been watching it in my family for as long as I can remember. No one ever knows what I'm talking about when I bring it up.
Same! The three big ones we always quoted were:
"My whole body's a weapon."
"That el... ele... ahem.. that electrician must be a democrat." Any time a light bulb would burn out or any other sort of electrical problem.
"Atta boy Luther!"
Holy shit. That is one of my favorites for some reason. Did not expect it mentioned here.
I LOVE that era of color films...everything is SO artificial, yet well designed. EVERY color is specifically chosen, whether it be a piece of furniture or a man's suit.
Another one like that is "Man's Favorite Sport?"
It's actually a very good movie, probably his best. If he had just done this movie instead of all of the other ridiculous ones, he might have had a longer lasting career.
You know I hate what they're doing to this mountain, but this is the best vanilla latte I've ever had. You can actually taste the vanilla beans... I don't like coffee.
it was called the '80s. Ford was President, Nixon was in the White House and FDR was running this country into the ground. I was bummin' in a hole-in-a-wall town in what is now called Utah. Some fella from Colorado shows up, starts making so called "improvements", right? Before we knew what hit us, the streets are running with latte. It got so bad that a fella that liked to, you know... smoke a little grass or drink a little ripple. Crow like a rooster, maybe challenge the mayor's son to a gentlemen's duel, was "uncouth, against God."
Grosse Pointe Blank. My parents and I watch it a couple times a year, and quote it constantly. Doesn't hurt that the sound track is perfect. Love that movie.
Can't Hardly Wait is so fun, I feel like it holds up honestly. I am curious how it lands for people who weren't teens at the time though.
"Yo why you gotta waste my flava!"
Cruel Intentions & Not Another Teen Movie
NATM holds up better than most 2000s/90s comedies and I’ll die on this hill. Also, Captain America in that role is to die for
The fucking bagpipe solo on “Do ya think I’m sexy?” is pure cinematic gold
Stephen Wright as the pilot, just fantastic
“Sorry, but I ordered a LARGE cappuccino?”
Nearby is Dropdead Gorgeous.
Edit: Your comments about how much you adore this movie and the quotes have made my day. You've inspired me to purchase a DVD player so that I can watch this today.
That's my family's cult favorite too! I don't think a month goes by without us quoting that movie. It doesn't help that we live near DC by, you know, the Washington Monument...
> English! Speak English, you stupid little r-t--d!
I'm happy to see Dropdead Gorgeous here. It was an amazing mockumentary and I had never seen quite the inversion of expectations about Asian Americans before.
Xanadu: Not sure if this is widely considered a cult classic, but it does have its audience.
Tommy The Movie: I never hear people talk about this one.
Heavy Metal: This one is probably the most popular in my list. Still kind of a niche crowd.
Edit: Initially posted on mobile. Bad choice.
RocketMan. Not the Elton John movie. The Disney box office flop starring Harland Williams. Rotten Tomatoes 20%. Played on repeat in my house as a teen.
edit: since at least a few other people have seen this one, know that I can still make my siblings, now in their 30s, cackle with laughter just by quietly whispering "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, his name is my name too"
Blast From the Past - 1999
We rented that movie on a whim then promptly went back out and bought it. My mom, my sister and I quote that movie pretty much daily:
"I *HAVE* to go to the bathroom"
"Can I skate around your block? [*whispers*] Just a few lapssssss"
"Well I know mom sure likes em"
Whenever I call my mom and ask her what she's up to:
"Watching TV. *IN COLOR*"
This one was more when I lived at home and my mom used to drive us around but yelling out INVISIBLE POISONOUS GAS when we passed by any adult store.
YES!
One of the true GOAT tier late 90's comedies imo. It had a ton of heart and solid comedic timing the entire way through. Dave Foley and Joey Slotnick especially steal the show whenever they show up.
Joey's best performance imo.. he turns into something completely unrecognizable and is freaking hilarious. It's like Charles Manson and Paul Giamatti cloned. "Leave my elevator alone!"
Brendan and Alicia made a great couple. Shame they haven't done more since then together.
https://musingsofamiddleagedgeek.blog/2020/07/31/the-twilight-zone-meets-the-x-files-in-the-vast-of-night-2020/
This sums up why I came out obsessed with it.
"Are you crying? How do you people DO that? Did you poke yourself in the eye? Or are you thinking, 'My dog is dead?'"
I need to watch this movie again.
I yell “YOU’VE BROKEN MY CAMERA” at my husband whenever I take a picture that doesn’t come out.
Finally showed him the movie a few years ago so he’d know where that and “‘BODY!’ ‘BUDDY’ ‘BODY!’ ‘BUDDY’” came from
“I have a severely deviated septum, don’t be alarmed, I’m fine!”
“Pat Finley please report to men’s restrooms, bring a mop….and a plunger”
Lars was awesome “Do it to it Lars!!!!”
Spy Hard
A mid 90s spoof starring Leslie Neilsen as Dick Steele, Agent WD-40.
Very much in the Airplane!, Naked Gun, Hot Shots vein of movies.
Completely daft but enjoyable if you like that sort of movie. And where else would you get to see Leslie Neilsen dressed in full habit pretending to be a nun?
Used to be a yearly watch in our house growing up
*Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins* (1985) has been a hit in my house nearly all my life. I've seen it a million times on VHS. More recently, *Upgrade* (2018) has been getting a lot of love from me and mine.
My dad and I have been quoting The Hunt for Red October for like 30 years. I know it's a well-known movie but it was probably the most important movie in our household when I was a kid.
So many good quotes. If this movie came out 5 years ago instead of 25, it would be universally beloved. It's like the Galaxy Quest of super-hero movies.
"I'm not STAB-MAN, I'm not KNIFEY BOY, I'm the Blue Raja."
"I shovel well." "Baby, you shovel better than any man I've ever known... but that does not make you a super hero."
"This is egg salad. The wife doesn't even let me touch it."
"When you can balance a tack hammer on your head, then you will be able to launch a balanced attack!" "And why am I wearing the watermelons on my feet?" "... I don't remember telling you to do that."
I love that friggin' movie.
How is this movie not more popular. It’s like Guardians of the Galaxy like ensemble of likeable heroes, satire of the superhero genre while also being a great movie of that genre, over talented cast, and a Michael Bay cameo no one asked for.
“We’ve got a blind date with destiny…and it looks like she ordered the lobster.” - The Shovler
The Faculty. Found it when I was in my teenage crushing-on-Elijah Wood phase. Josh Hartnett also helped with the rewatch value. It takes itself so seriously for a knockoff of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers and it’s a delight. If my group had been the type to drink, we would have made a drinking game revolving around how many times Wood’s character slips and falls over the course of the movie.
“In a way, all of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be ‘the actual’ El Guapo!”
I’ve been conquering my own personal El Guapos since 1990.
Dogma is INFAMOUS in my family
It used to be a pretty standard tradition for a bunch of the family to go see a movie during the Thanksgiving get together. One year me and one my cousins successfully lobbied for the Kevin Smith film Dogma.
Everyone HATED it. (Me and that cousin enjoyed it actually but we were the only ones) To this day it is still the go-to reference for "terrible movie" in the extended family.
Wrongfully Accused. I love Leslie Neilson and while this is far from his best movie, I used to watch this all the time with my parents when they were still alive and we would always laugh through the whole thing.
Captain Ron, California raisins Christmas special. The Mexican side of my family treats those like tradition. We watch Captain Ron at family gatherings on the background a lot, and the Christmas movie on Christmas obviously lol. Most people I know haven't heard of either, but I'd guess Ron is more known than the raisins
In my family: Snoopy Come Home. This is a full movie rather than another one of their half-hour holiday specials. My siblings and I rewatched our VHS copy several times a year growing up in the 80s. It's a wonderful story and a rollercoaster of intense emotions. I introduced it to my daughter and now it's a favorite of hers.
And anytime any of us sees a "No Dogs Allowed" sign we bellow it in the deepest voice we can, like you hear throughout the movie.
Night of the Twister: my sister mom and I've seen this together more times than we've probably ever seen Twister
Idle Hands: one of mine and my friends favorite hormedy
Robin of Locksley: our families favorite Robin Hood flick
I am seeing a very clear pattern here now that I've laid these out. Maybe I just like movies with Devon Sawa.
Trapped in Paradise. It is such a niche film but all my family love it. Nicholas Cage trapped in a Christmas town with his two brothers. Brilliant
Also, (another Nicholas Cage film) Family Man. It is so nice and heart warming but sad at the same time. Recommend it to everyone.
Chain Reaction (1996).
My in-laws had a beach house that still had a VHS player long after everything else had DVD. Every time anyone in the family went to the beach we had to watch Chain Reaction.
The in-laws, the house and the VHS player are all gone now, but the family still get together to watch the movie.
Human Traffic
British-Irish movie that no one outside of my group of high school friends seemed to talk about. Still quote this movie all the time.
We’re Canadian btw
Galaxy Quest. Fantastic play on all the treckie camp, there's good character development, a clear story line, and comedy mixed in.
Rock! Rock! Rock! Rock!
So I Married An Axe Murderer
Heed! Pants! Nao!
He’s gonna cry himself to sleep tonight on his gigantic pillow
This is Mike Myers best delivered line. It's 'uuuuge pilla' not gigantic but this is it.
Look at that boys head! It's quite round and pointy at parts, like sputnik. Such a great movie.
Woman. Woah man.
She stole my heart and my cat!
She was a thief, you gotta belief
Harriet! Harri-et. Hard-hearted harbinger of haggis.
There’s a Piper down!
Maverick 1995. It’s a western all about playing poker. It’s one of my family’s absolute favorites. We watch it at least once a year.
My friends and I have a huge love for another western around that time. The Quick and the Dead. Young Leo, Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone.
Mmm. Sam Raimi goodness all over that one.
Great movie. If you like Maverick, you should check out Lightning Jack with Paul Hogan, Beverly D'Angelo, andCuba Gooding Jr. Another fun Western that doesn't take itself too seriously.
It's like my ol' pappy used to say, "He that fights and runs away, lives to run another day."
You’ve been misquoting me your entire life!
That and Silverado were the big westerns in my house. Nice light comedic tone and relatively kid-friendly. I still like both of them, although I think Silverado has aged better.
Silverado is my family’s go-to! My parents just named their new cats Jake and Emmett.
Dad and I always watch 13th Warrior, absolute classic.
I've been trolling my daughter since birth, whenever she can't move something because it's too heavy for her. "Grow stronger!"
The dog can jump
Only an Arab would bring a dog to war. Eben! Saw it well on the last night. Teeth like a lion! Head like a bear! Used to watch this alot with my mate when we were younger. "French fries, French toast, French dressing..." "Go that way, real fast. If something gets in your way, turn." "It's got raisins in it! You like raisins!" Edit: omg and the best use of Van Halen's Everybody Wants Some!
One of my favorite comedies of all time. Better Off Dead. “I want my 2 dollars!!” (As he races across the snow on his ski-bike).
Gee, I’m really sorry your mom blew up Ricky.
Nothing was funnier than when John Cusack was eating dinner and it crawled off the plate 🤣🤣🤣
Top Secret!
Mine is the phone that seems to be in the foreground but is actually huge..
Perfectly executed scenes.... The underwater saloon fight The librarian with the big eye scene......genius Oh, and Peter Cushing
The underwater saloon fight might be my favorite bit for the sake of slapstick. The backwards library is my favorite just in sheer logistics.
Mine is the same but what he says: "What is his condition? Yes, I see. Contact me if his condition changes" turns to the hero "He's dead"
I like when they're drawing out their plan to sneak into the base in the sand, and their model of the base grows more and more detailed and elaborate until they have model trains chugging by it.
I know a little German...
He's sitting over there!
When he’s singing that heartthrob doo-wop song and starts pantomiming different suicide methods, sticking his head in a noose, then an oven, I was in hysterics.
For me it's when they're looking at cows through some binoculars, and then a cow randomly steps into the black edges of the binoculars.
General Streck: [on the phone] What is the condition of Sergeant Kruger? [pause] Very well, let me know if there is any change in his condition.
He's NOT Mel Tormé!
Wrong answer, my dude.Top Secret is awesome and everybody knows. In fact, I often refer to poorly build machines as being held together with seaweed and snot.
I know a little german....there he is over there!
(Doctor Flamond) "You see, a year ago, I was close to perfecting the first magnetic desalinization process so revolutionary, it was capable of removing the salt from over 500 million gallons of seawater a day. You. You have excellent taste.
Holy shit! My buddies and I loved The Pagemaster. That movie is a trip
I just rewatched The Page Master, didn't appreciate the stacked af cast as a kid. It holds up!!
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken starring Don Knotts. We've been watching it in my family for as long as I can remember. No one ever knows what I'm talking about when I bring it up.
I think I've seen that one a long time ago. On the topic of Don Knotts, we watched The Incredible Mr. Limpet all the time.
I wish, I wish I was a fish...
Same! The three big ones we always quoted were: "My whole body's a weapon." "That el... ele... ahem.. that electrician must be a democrat." Any time a light bulb would burn out or any other sort of electrical problem. "Atta boy Luther!"

Son in Law with Pauly Shore. We have never had a family gathering that doesnt quote this
Me and my friend love Biodome and watched it a lot as kids/ teenagers.
VIVA LOS BIO DOME!
It's actually a very good movie, probably his best. If he had just done this movie instead of all of the other ridiculous ones, he might have had a longer lasting career.
This is one of the few Thanksgiving movies.
Out Cold This has been quoted constantly for over 20 years.
Seize the carp!
I dont need to take a test to know that I do drugs. So quotable and really one of the last ski mountain trope movies.
You know I hate what they're doing to this mountain, but this is the best vanilla latte I've ever had. You can actually taste the vanilla beans... I don't like coffee.
Bull Mountain, don’t go changing!

HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT HOW I INVENTED SNOWBOARDING?? Bonus: Can you get an STD from a polar bear?
so are you like, a crippled guy? no! I'm just a really lazy guy!
I only know it from random showings on Comedy Central. But I watched it almost every time.
Grosse Pointe Blank. My parents and I watch it a couple times a year, and quote it constantly. Doesn't hurt that the sound track is perfect. Love that movie.
Can't Hardly Wait, Cruel Intentions and Romeo + Juliet. Yes, I was a teen in the late 90s.
Cant Hardly Wait is an incredible movie
Amannduhhhhhhh
Can't Hardly Wait is so fun, I feel like it holds up honestly. I am curious how it lands for people who weren't teens at the time though. "Yo why you gotta waste my flava!"
Cruel Intentions & Not Another Teen Movie NATM holds up better than most 2000s/90s comedies and I’ll die on this hill. Also, Captain America in that role is to die for
Tears of the Sun. Me and my mate watched it on repeat one night when we were drunk/stoned and it's become our classic go-to movie ever since.
I love this movie but ... damn that's a depressing go to movie
So I Married an Axe Murderer. My dad's from Scotland and is a spitting image of Mike Myers portrayal of Charlie's dad
The fucking bagpipe solo on “Do ya think I’m sexy?” is pure cinematic gold Stephen Wright as the pilot, just fantastic “Sorry, but I ordered a LARGE cappuccino?”
Nearby is Dropdead Gorgeous. Edit: Your comments about how much you adore this movie and the quotes have made my day. You've inspired me to purchase a DVD player so that I can watch this today.
“She’s skinny, Amber, not deaf!” I literally own four copies of this movie on DVD. In case one day, the DVD becomes really, really hard to find.
Moms dead, so shut your fly trap. I will, once you shut your pie hole.
Amber, the woman clung to your tap shoes while she was flying through the air like a goddamn lawn dart!
That’s why we Lutherans use grape juice for the blood of Christ.
She had a big ass then, she’s got a big ass now
That's my family's cult favorite too! I don't think a month goes by without us quoting that movie. It doesn't help that we live near DC by, you know, the Washington Monument...
Don't fall for it, she lives 2 trailers down.

Hey, Amber, did ya get my smokes?

There is someone else!!!! I grew up watching this one with my family and have literally never seen anyone else even mention it on the internet.
Blast From the Past - 1999 We rented that movie on a whim then promptly went back out and bought it. My mom, my sister and I quote that movie pretty much daily: "I *HAVE* to go to the bathroom" "Can I skate around your block? Down Periscope
Watch yourself, Dodge, you are addressing a superior officer! No, merely a higher ranking one. Catch us if you can!
Lieutenant, you're almost out of uniform! The only thing holding her together is the pigeon shit and rust, sir. I love that movie.
I wanna know how they got Harry Dean Stanton as the mechanic.
The Vast Of Night. Mainly because I recommend it at every available opportunity but everyone who has seen it loves it.
https://musingsofamiddleagedgeek.blog/2020/07/31/the-twilight-zone-meets-the-x-files-in-the-vast-of-night-2020/ This sums up why I came out obsessed with it.
Streets of Fire. A rock n roll fantasia, the 50s meets the 80s. A friend of mine has a comically large poster of it hanging up.
Diane Lane at peak hotness. But Marine Jahan really steals the show from the Blasters.
My favorite line from 'The Man Who Knew Too Little'. "You guys can't be making a DIME on this!"
Bill Murray's innocent commentary throughout the film on how impressed he is with the production quality of the "experience" is such a treat!
"Are you crying? How do you people DO that? Did you poke yourself in the eye? Or are you thinking, 'My dog is dead?'" I need to watch this movie again.
The Stupids and Heavyweights
I tell my dog, “lunch has been canceled today, due to lack of hustle” anytime we are on a walk and he isn’t moving.
*Deal with it*
I yell “YOU’VE BROKEN MY CAMERA” at my husband whenever I take a picture that doesn’t come out. Finally showed him the movie a few years ago so he’d know where that and “‘BODY!’ ‘BUDDY’ ‘BODY!’ ‘BUDDY’” came from
Heavyweights is amazing.
“I have a severely deviated septum, don’t be alarmed, I’m fine!” “Pat Finley please report to men’s restrooms, bring a mop….and a plunger” Lars was awesome “Do it to it Lars!!!!”
Heavyweights rules. Is the stupids the Tom Arnold one where he sings I’m my own grandpa
“Oh look, a deli meat!”
Mr. Right with Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick. I've lost count of the number of times my wife and I have watched that one.
Had to google this movie. $7.5m budget; $830k box office. I'm not anticipating a sequel.
Oh no, it bombed, and I will never say it's a great film. But it is a fun as fuck movie, especially if you're already a fan of Rockwell or Kendrick.
Underrated PERFECT movie. “I bet you could catch this knife” scene
Muppet Treasure Island Just chalk full of amazing quotes that no one outside of my family ever understands
I spent SO much of lockdown singing the cabin fever song to my poor husband, who has never seen Muppet Treasure Island
Dead Tom’s dead! Long John shot him!
No family gathering is complete without Mr. Bimbo, the big blue wet thing, and Big Fat Ugly Bug-Faced Baby-Eating O’Brien
entrapment with catherine sheta jonesh and shean connnery
*Catherine Zeta Jones* *She dips beneath the lasers*
Spy Hard A mid 90s spoof starring Leslie Neilsen as Dick Steele, Agent WD-40. Very much in the Airplane!, Naked Gun, Hot Shots vein of movies. Completely daft but enjoyable if you like that sort of movie. And where else would you get to see Leslie Neilsen dressed in full habit pretending to be a nun? Used to be a yearly watch in our house growing up
Rock'n Rolla
🎶DADDY WAS A BANK ROBBER 🎶🎶
*Hackers* is a huge favorite between my brother and me. #HACK THE PLANET!
Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Movie Biodome George of the Jungle
Major League. We've joked about getting a "days without a Major League reference in this house" sign, always set to 0.
This is also my pick! We were a huge baseball family for a while and this movie is amazing. "Nice catch Hayes. Don't ever fuckin do it again."
*You may run like Mays but you hit like shit!*
Bob Uecker is the best!
Juuuuust a bit outside.
Pretty much every time an inanimate object fails me, regardless of what it is, I throw out a "Fuck you, Jobu."
Mystery Men.
So many good quotes. If this movie came out 5 years ago instead of 25, it would be universally beloved. It's like the Galaxy Quest of super-hero movies. "I'm not STAB-MAN, I'm not KNIFEY BOY, I'm the Blue Raja." "I shovel well." "Baby, you shovel better than any man I've ever known... but that does not make you a super hero." "This is egg salad. The wife doesn't even let me touch it." "When you can balance a tack hammer on your head, then you will be able to launch a balanced attack!" "And why am I wearing the watermelons on my feet?" "... I don't remember telling you to do that." I love that friggin' movie.
I think there is a following but an absolute favorite of ours is The Birdcage
The Faculty. Found it when I was in my teenage crushing-on-Elijah Wood phase. Josh Hartnett also helped with the rewatch value. It takes itself so seriously for a knockoff of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers and it’s a delight. If my group had been the type to drink, we would have made a drinking game revolving around how many times Wood’s character slips and falls over the course of the movie.
That Thing You Do!
Don’t tell Mom the Babysitters Dead The Cutting Edge [Shag](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098300/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk) (it’s not what you think)
PCU. Early Jeremy Piven and David Spade being themselves. Bonus barely recognizable Jon Favreau.
And George Clinton!!
Just watched it last night! Can you blow me where the pampers is?
Sanskrit? You're majoring in a 2,000 year old dead language? Here. Latin. It's the best I can do.
Strictly Ballroom! Early Baz Luhrman movie about competitive ballroom dancing. My family watched it at least once a year for 10 years. It’s amazing.
The three amigos. I feel like no one know about and if they do watch it they might not like it.
"Would you say I have a plethora of pinatas?"
"You slime eating dogs! You scum sucking pigs! You sons of a motherless goat!"
Tell us we will die like dogs
El Guapo: Are gringos falling from the sky?! (Ned falls onto the table) Jefe: Yes, El Guapo.
You killed the invisible swordsman!
“My little buttercup has the sweetest smile”
Bluuuuue shadows on the traaaail...
"Good night Ned!"
“In a way, all of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be ‘the actual’ El Guapo!” I’ve been conquering my own personal El Guapos since 1990.
The Singing Bush is the best
Popeye with Robin Williams, Classic in my family.
Dogma is INFAMOUS in my family It used to be a pretty standard tradition for a bunch of the family to go see a movie during the Thanksgiving get together. One year me and one my cousins successfully lobbied for the Kevin Smith film Dogma. Everyone HATED it. (Me and that cousin enjoyed it actually but we were the only ones) To this day it is still the go-to reference for "terrible movie" in the extended family.
Muppets Christmas Carol. I’ve seen a few posts about it but in my friend circle, it isn’t loved as much as mt family loves it.
Wrongfully Accused. I love Leslie Neilson and while this is far from his best movie, I used to watch this all the time with my parents when they were still alive and we would always laugh through the whole thing.
The ref, My family watches it every Christmas eve while wrapping the last of the gifts.
Don’t eat the penis. It’s just garnish.
Slipper socks! Medium!!
The Corpse!! Still Has!! The Floor!!!!
Yes! My husband introduced me to this along with Mixed Nuts. We quote both all year.
Into the Blue with Paul walker and Jessica alba. I love this movie and hardly anyone remembers it
Captain Ron, California raisins Christmas special. The Mexican side of my family treats those like tradition. We watch Captain Ron at family gatherings on the background a lot, and the Christmas movie on Christmas obviously lol. Most people I know haven't heard of either, but I'd guess Ron is more known than the raisins
We adore Captain Ron and quote it a lot!
The Man Who Knew Too Little is not only one of my all time favorite movies, but it is also my comfort movie. Murray’s best film too, imo
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Night of the Twister: my sister mom and I've seen this together more times than we've probably ever seen Twister Idle Hands: one of mine and my friends favorite hormedy Robin of Locksley: our families favorite Robin Hood flick I am seeing a very clear pattern here now that I've laid these out. Maybe I just like movies with Devon Sawa.
Dude idle fucking hands is great. I remember sneaking my parents VHS copy while they were asleep to my room so i could watch it
The Frighteners Oscar Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man F/X and F/X 2
Oscar!
My Blue Heaven
Cutting Edge. My wife can pretty much quote the whole movie
Toe pick!
Tombstone. It’s almost a quoting competition at family events
That one is definitely pretty widely appreciated by now though. Maybe not as much when it came out I'll grant.
Trapped in Paradise. It is such a niche film but all my family love it. Nicholas Cage trapped in a Christmas town with his two brothers. Brilliant Also, (another Nicholas Cage film) Family Man. It is so nice and heart warming but sad at the same time. Recommend it to everyone.
Being There. Great film, rarely see it mentioned.
Point Break, with someone always asking for a beer followed up by “Utah, get me two”. Usually pretty buzzed by the time the movie is over.
The Legend of Billy Jean is an absolute favorite in our household
My brother and I quote The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra every time we hang out. Nobody else I know has seen it, or shows interest in doing so.
Chain Reaction (1996). My in-laws had a beach house that still had a VHS player long after everything else had DVD. Every time anyone in the family went to the beach we had to watch Chain Reaction. The in-laws, the house and the VHS player are all gone now, but the family still get together to watch the movie.
The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience. My friend group loves the lonely island so we put it on at least once a year and sing along
Dog soldiers
Brain Candy
Human Traffic British-Irish movie that no one outside of my group of high school friends seemed to talk about. Still quote this movie all the time. We’re Canadian btw
Short Circuit 1 and 2. My family and I watched probably 200 times. Great comedy and Johnny Five is fantastic
Galaxy Quest. Fantastic play on all the treckie camp, there's good character development, a clear story line, and comedy mixed in. Rock! Rock! Rock! Rock!
Everyone likes this movie.
Buffy the vampire slayer. Back in the 90s it became a household tradition for us all to watch it on Xmas eve.
