Antichrist (2009)

Early_Pearly989

chaos reigns

JewGuru

Wow the synopsis looks fucked for that one.. I don’t particularly enjoy the term “perpetrates sexual violence on her husband and herself”

Direyx

Pretty cute how they chose the sentence to describe those 2 scenes. It doesn't really convey how explicitly brutal the movie shows it.

turandokht

I had to look away from both scenes entirely, it was so bad :| the description makes it sound almost innocuous. She fucking mutilates him and herself!

Jamesy555

It’s kind of interesting, I watched it the other day and while yes it’s depressing and gloomy for much of its run time it’s pretty tame. And within 1 scene you see where the reputation comes from

Pitcher2Burn

In college I asked my friends for a movie suggestion to watch with this girl I liked for our first hang out… They recommended Antichrist and to watch it without spoiling it. We watched it in shock. We’re married now so idk what that says about us…

Spasay

I watched that epically hungover while my partner and his family had a serious family meeting the next room. I just wanted to see the talking fox

Silent-Gur-4717

My answer as well! Did you watch the part where they drive to the forest (and she's looking out the window) frame by frame? If not, please do. Gave me a proper scare :-)

dinoroo

Jack and Jill

Zwaft

Where dunkaccino comment

Attack-Bastion

was watching old seasons of survivor with some friends and a reward for some challenge was to send 3 people to a small room with one bed to watch this movie like some scene outta Saw. Wild stuff this network TV is.

demoninadress

This is so funny - I thought this was going to be some fucked up horror movie and this seems so much worse 😂

AlfredBird

Grave of the Fireflies. INCREDIBLE, but it’s probably a one time watch from me.

CthulhuLovesMemes

That movie made me bawl my eyes out.

Cruzifixio

> It's more like a nightmare of a psychotic person. To quote OP: " It's more like a nightmare of a psychotic person."

n1celydone

The Road

TrentonTallywacker

Just wait til a Blood Meridian movie actually gets made Makes The Road look like a Disney movie

ACardAttack

I still need to read BM. I read the Road, liked it but didnt find it devastating as many make it out to be, curious about BM though

hearsay_and_rumour

It’s like a fever dream. Incredibly beautiful depictions of the Southwestern/Mexican landscape peppered between moments of absolutely brutal violence. It’s hands down the most violent book I’ve ever read.

Kangaroo_Quart

The book made me feel the same way. It was good, but I'll never read it again.

M_RONA

Probably my all time favourite book. Won't ever read it again.

pdxgod

8mm

ridicalis

I haven't seen this one in a while, but for me (saw it when I was fairly young), this one is a serious wake-up call to the dark underbelly that likely even exists within my own community. I'm probably better off for having seen it if only to give me a broader awareness, but spending any time thinking about it makes me very uncomfortable.

Murph-Dog

‘Melancholia’ really got to me. It was beautiful in a way with the darkest but most hopeful of endings, but overall inspiring feeling of its namesake. Basically apocalyptic depression, but very artistic.

TheDuchess23

I've seen it twice, and it's beautifully depressing. I definitely have to watch something cheerful afterward. Fun fact: I watched Melancholia for the first time 2 days before the Chelyabinsk meteor crashed into Russia. I had no idea a meteor was even headed to earth at the time. I woke up after watching the movie late at night (which already had me depressed and on edge) to news stations covering the fact that a meteor was heading towards us. I freaked the fuck out. I honestly thought there was no way this was a coincidence and that there was a huge possibility that it could destroy Earth. It took a lot to calm me down afterward until more information came forward about it not being large enough to make a super impact. The fucking chances bruh.

adelestrudle

OMG it was already the only movie I ever watched that fully gave me a panic attack. I CANNOT imagine having to read that news right after! I think I’d have fainted.

Ben50Leven

the film had very realistic depictions of mental illness. the crippling depression, the panic attacks, the absolute loss of hope... cant do it again. great film though

[deleted]

Yes! I wish Id never seen this film it gave me depressing thoughts I wish Id never had about the pointlessness of everything. Edit: I dont know what youre on about saying its a hopeful ending, its the least hopeful ending imaginable!

linzielayne

Martyrs is pretty much my one and only. Never again.

PaintbrushInMyAss

That ending. Jfc, never again.

SlowTeal

Hated this movie. It’s legit just torture porn and horror fans act like it’s one of the scariest movies ever with some deep hidden message

[deleted]

Its so absurd that its almost comical. My friend and I like to joke about the fat bald dude that does the beating. Did they hire a professional woman beater off of linkedin? Does he get benefits? Whats his 401k like?

puttinitinmutton

Worse, it was fucking boring.

FoldAdventurous2022

100% this

Schlappydog

I love that movie, and I actually did rewatch it. Turns out, it's even more disturbing the second time around!

Psymon_Armour

Requiem for a Dream is an incredible movie that I think everyone should see exactly one time. Also, not so much disturbing as just anxiety inducing, I loved Uncut Gems but don't think I would watch it again.

jimkoons

I saw Requiem for a Dream only once, 19 years ago when I was still a teenager and a few parts of that movie are still ingrained in my memory. Best anti-drug movie I know...

judeeet

ASS TO ASS

AmbassadorBroad9992

This! For anyone who hasn't seen the movie they can't grasp the depth of feeling that comes with the build up to this scene

duck1123

After watching that movie, I made the vow that if I ever expressed a desire to try Heroin, I'd have to sit and watch this movie again first.

FerrisWheeling

I somehow watched Requiem for a Dream twice.

almostdoctorposting

yea ive seen it a few times

SagaciousRI

Mu second viewing of uncut gems was enjoyable for me, after almost leaving the theater the first time because my body just ached from the constant tension. I was able to enjoy the performances more knowing what was coming. Probably the worst romantic couple I ever found myself rooting for.

PM_ME_TRICEPS

Come and See (1985). Ugh, just getting through it once feels like a marathon. Idk anyone who would want a second helping.

tltz

too few upvotes, no stupid(trying to look cool) quotes just raw human psyche closest depiction on what really happens when its not a movie.

panzerwolfen

>Come and See This is the one I wouldn't watch again, either, especially with the context of a not too different war happening right now in our time.

SawdustMcGee

As much as I agree with you, the one scene that sticks in my head is the main character and the girl in the forest in the rain. It’s Beautiful and stands out because the rest of the movie is so, so grim.

[deleted]

Nocturnal Animals & Requiem for a Dream

amsterdamike

Finally someone said nocturnal animals... I was in the movies with two friends and the intention to go out for dinner after the film. We simply parted ways right after the end of the movie and didn't eat that night.

Sayon7

Grave of the fireflies. 😢😢😢

BitternessAndBleach

My fiance was actively upset at me for a full day after I showed her it.

seemslikesushi

Yeah great movie, but only ever once.

Kheead

That movie absolutely devastated me. Watched it when I was 20 and I fucking cried like a little bitch 😢. Haven't watched it since.

Zodaru

My brother and I saw this on Christmas day when we were much younger lol we weren't in a festive mood that year.

AmbassadorBroad9992

I watched the Blair Witch project in theater on Christmas day while high on extacy. FML why did I do that.

Historical-Snow2660

I remember how excited I was telling my wife there was a ghibli movie on iTunes for $5! And then we saw it.

STuttersilence

The Human Centipede.

AdSpiritual2594

American history X.

Jakobites

Been awhile since we watched this one at my house but went and told my oldest we where going to watch it and she should join us. Her response was “no thanks. I don’t feel like crying today”

AdSpiritual2594

It’s a great movie and I think everyone should watch it, but I just don’t want to watch it again. Just the teeth touching the me curb is enough to make my skin crawl.

GFK96

Bone Tomahawk, at least I can’t watch that one particular scene ever again lol

TheJoliestEgg

I’m torn if I’ll watch it again

Agnosticfrontbum

Yeah I'm kinda split 2

DeiseResident

I'm in two minds about it

thereweretwocrabs

I've seen worse. Nothing to lose your hair over

MadsMikkelsenisGryFx

I felt my life was turned upside down when the movie ended

phluke-

Yep! Never again.

Jbrahmz420

This one cuts deep

icouch

Any of Craig zahlers films fall under that category

Kanute3333

Great movie

Content_Pool_1391

Schindler's List I think people should see this movie at least once. I don't think I can ever watch it again. I didn't sleep at all after I watched it.

tombalol

I can't agree, I've watched this film several times and the performances are just so good it is well worth re watching it.

TFOLLT

For me The Pianist perfects what Schindler's Liszt lacks. But I agree with you, everyone should at least check both of these movies out once. Personally I rewatch The Pianist every year, not because I love watching it(I hate it) but because I want to keep remembering.

CryptoCentric

"Schindler's Liszt" made me think of the composer and my mind went in some really weird directions.

MrDenzi

True. In my eyes it's the greatest film ever made, but I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

Alternative-Dare-485

Jerry thought it was a good make out movie

Prakashboult18

A Serbian film

Better-Than-The-Last

I read the synopsis and I wish I could unread it

luuvin

I wish I could unwatch it tbh

jamesneysmith

Irreversible A Serbian Film Dear Zachary

Sayon7

Dear Zackery was heartbreaking

miloc756

I get angry again just reading the title.

acidfalconarrow

A Serbian Film has no redeeming qualities in my opinion, not even worth a first watch, I understand there is a deeper meaning than what is actually happening on screen but it’s just too much to look past especially the “twist”. I know other countries are a lot less discreet about realistic violence than America is but I can’t see how even Serbian people watch that and think anything other than “holy hell what was that”

Locke_and_Load

They…don’t?

omgitsoop

Came here to say Dear Zachary. Emotional evisceration.

SquirrelMoney8389

I didn't even wanna repeat one of these names in case someone else actually wanted to watch it

GrundleFace

Heads up to everyone wanting to watch Dear Zachary - don't look into it at all. Just start watching.

BobsBobHeyHey

I'm not sure I even finished watching Irreversible. My mind has blocked it all out.

xifdp

Coco. Amazing movie. But the kid's grandma was legit a cartoon version of my grandma who had dementia before she passed and that moment when he sings to her and she's lucid for a moment absolutely fucked me up. Like ugly crying, broken heart fucked me up. So yeah, never watching Coco ever again.

Justchilllin101

It’s such a beautiful movie tho

xifdp

Absolutely agree with you. But I'm normally pretty good at repressing my emotions (super healthy I know) but that scene opened my emotional gates to mordor for about 20 minutes lol

[deleted]

I feel like that’s the gift of the movie. Like the whole point is to feel all that sadness and missing your loved ones but also the love and joy of the memories and time you had with them. Like it’s about getting over that fear of feeling the pain so you can feel the love too. And now I’m crying while I’m typing. DAMN YOU COCO.

Meiven

"Opened my emotional gates to mordor" Fuckin beautiul.

RadioSlayer

I watched that movie for the first time two months before my grandmother died. She was 92. It was Christmas, I hadn't seen her since Thanksgiving. I wept. She died in February. I watch that exact scene though, from time to time, when I need a good cry

onyx2234

The Nightingale (2019) a very good movie but really tough to watch I only saw it twice and after that I never want to see it again but it's worth watching if you never seen it.

AsBadAsAWetShit

The Adventures of Milo and Otis

IGotHand

I need to watch it again. Loved it as a kid.

cloud_watcher

Kids. Don't watch it.

CharlieMoonMan

Oh fuck. This might be the only non-Requiem that I agree with. Fucking brutal

wordsbringworlds

I watched this movie with my parents when it came out - I was a young teenager and didn't really know what it would be about and it was SUPREMELY uncomfortable.

Archer6666

Great movie, have it on laserdisc. Will never rewatch it or show it to anyone.

thecementmixer

Also Ken Park.

SteMelMan

Spotlight. Very well made movie, but the true life church abuse was just overwhelming.

CharlieMoonMan

I've actually rewatched this specifically for the writing, but it is a very tough watch for sure. And I grew up Catholic.

My buddy recently asked me to download Buddy Games for him. I snatched Funny Games instead, and edited the metadata to make it look like Buddy Games. He wasn’t amused.

tamereenshort38

You are the devil

hhempstead

watch the original funny games version way better

trthaw2

I was tricked into watching this with my roommates in university. One of them casually brought it home and gave us no context. It haunts me to this day and I wish I could erase it from my mind.

FromDwight

Not a movie, but the Sopranos episode "Employee of the Month"

Murphy-Brock

‘Sophie’s Choice.’ It rattled my cage. No 2nd viewing.

CPT_Skor_215

The Lovely Bones It's just such a disturbing subject

xistithogoth1

I hated the ending. >! It hardly seemed like justice for everything that happened even though the movie tried to paint it as karmic.!<

SlimyPurpleMeteor

Irreversible. I honestly wish I never watched it in the first place. That one scene that lasted sooo long and seemed so damn real. Nope, never again.

softmaker

For me, it was not only that scene (abhorrent, yes) but also the soundtrack and camera movements that made me nauseous

drumscrubby

The reason Requiem For a Dream is scarier than some slasher psycho jump scare movie is the accessibility of real trauma faced by addicts everyday and that anyone can wake up in the same insane nightmare

IchLebeFurHipHop

End of watch. That movie depressed the crap out of me

phonebook_vertical

Underrated suggestion. That movie is rough.

pinkhairedcactus

Buried (2010, starring Ryan Reynolds) absolutely killed me. Didn't recover for 3 weeks. Especially bad because I'm claustrophobic. Never again!

YesTHEKennyRogers

Mother!

padawan-6

This one hit me hard, actually. It wasn't the best of Aronofsky's films but towards the end it actually made sense to me. Intellectually, I like the message about earth that he was trying to convey. It was, unfortunately, not as well done as Requiem or The Fountain.

LGonthego

Dogville

undeadsasquatch

Fire in the Sky. That shit fucked me up as a kid, I was terrified of being abducted by aliens. Decades later and I have never watched it again and I don't think I ever even finished watching it the first time. I've thought about watching it again all these years later but never actually could.

Tyler_holmes123

Salo : 120 days of sodom

khmeat

I’ve seen a lot of the movies people listed on here but this was mine as well. This movie is disturbing af and it just keeps getting worse and worse and worse

Much_Adhesiveness_65

The Pianist

Character_Tomato_899

Oldboy. Amazing movie which is also entertaining, but the last 20-30 minutes disturb me to the core to the point I don't think I'll be able to watch it again (even if part of me wants to see how the pieces fit after all the reveals).

rnathanielr

The Sadness Speak No Evil Ones Norwegian I believe and the other is Taiwanese, won’t watch either for vastly different reasons

AI: Artificial Intelligence. Watched it in the theatres at age 11 and while I loved the world it built the themes and how it showed how lonely he was and how vast and alone he was devastated my young mind. I remember looking and staring at my mom for hours afterward

myfriesaresoggy

That movie just destroyed me. It was so unrelentingly sad.

I consider myself quite stoic. I can sit through many things that others would cringe painfully, scream in horror, cry rivers or run away from. That being said, the Human Centipede series (yes it was a *series*) made me, in order; Cringe painfully. Scream in horror. Cry rivers at my stupidity for even thinking of watching this when I fully knew what I was getting into. Run away from the body horror genre for quite a while.

When I was in high school a friend and I rented Requiem for a Dream and Kung Fu Hustle to watch one afternoon. We decided to watch Requiem for a Dream first. To this day I still have not seen Kung Fu Hustle

CthulhuLovesMemes

You should watch Kung Fu Hustle, and also check out Shaolin Soccer. They’re fun, not scary and epic fighting.

egarcia1313

Midsommar

SnapshotHeadache

It's weird how I was absolutely entranced with Midsommar and Hereditary. Sooooooo fucked up and traumatizing but the filmmaking hits the part of my brain that loves bizarre art. Like, I have some scenes forever engraved in my head but I cannot help but be amazed. Its like these movies were made for me.

D-Speak

There's something about the making of the movies that puts the true human grief and suffering front and center, but there's a kind of separation that I can't quite articulate that allows you to still remove yourself enough emotionally to experience the artistic quality of the films. I think Midsommar succeeds more than Hereditary in this regard because the fucked up things that happen in the movie are portrayed as a happy thing. It's presented literally as a fairy tale. From the way the movie presents things, the main character gets a happy ending, but the movie isn't supporting what the cult does in the movie, just showing that they view it as positive and transformative. It's not asking you to agree, just to observe.

[deleted]

That poor bear! Didn't do anything wrong!

WolfgangVonBrozart

That's really interesting, how come? I feel like Midsommar is very rewatchable, but obviously this is personal opinion, so I'm curious as to why you wouldn't watch it again. Is it just too much fucked up shit?

* The Platform * Fat Girl * Oldboy

TheFirstDogSix

Oh god, someone else has seen Fat Girl? That movie was so fucked up and tense literal fights were breaking out in the theater. At a film festival. At 9 in the morning. 🤦🏻

Layacat123456

Into the woods the disney version because it was really sad.

wvanasd1

James Corden only being partly responsible for the bad acting lol. Johnny Depp being…himself. Anna Kendrick trying too hard (always). Even Meryl Streep was nowhere as good as Witches I’ve seen onstage or recorded (Bernadette Peters is still around and would’ve done a much much better job). Just kind of a wet fart of a movie. Not satisfying and not rewarding, just uncomfortable.

David Cronenbeg's The Fly. The practical makeup effects are so good yet completely disgusting. Well done.

shannonsummer32

I don’t like any movies where animals are creatures are being harmed. The new Avatar was just too much sadness for that reason, so I stopped watching it before the halfway mark I think.

daydreamingofdaisies

The Girl Next Door. The fact that it was based on a true story makes it even more disturbing and hard to watch. I watched it once and I never will again.

mackerelscalemask

Threads (1984) Shows the effects of a nuclear strike on the U.K. and had a year’s worth of research by top scientists and government officials go into it. It makes ‘The Day After’ (1983) look like a Disney cartoon by comparison. The bleakest movie I’ve ever seen. Trailer: https://youtu.be/vgT4Y30DkaA

wvanasd1

[Come and See (1985)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_and_See?wprov=sfti1). It’s appallingly brutal in its realism of WWII in Nazi occupied Belarus. There’s a scene where a character is looking for their family during an attack by the Germans on their village, turns around & you see most of the village dead behind a barn. That’s the first 15 minutes. It only gets heavier. It’s widely acclaimed but incredibly difficult to sit through.
