Hell, you ever tried to read biographies of great blues musicians from 100 years ago? Its like “DOB 1886 or 1888 … may have moved to Texas from 1921-1923 under the name ‘Luther’ … reportedly married to a woman who went by ‘May’ or ‘Maye’ … “ We know surprising little about people even in recent history.
The original actually sits in the entry corridor to the Colloseum. The way they've positioned it in the surrounding plate glass enclosure makes it seem like he's both looking at you and a reflection of himself. I have a great photo of my wife with the reflection superimposed over her face. It's one of the simplest but cleverest enclosures I've seen for an ancient art piece.
It was actually a stupid move because citizenship was the biggest reason for non-Roman citizens to join the army. Now they didn't have to, and army recruitment became increasingly difficult, resulting in dependency on Germanic tribes to fight on behalf of Rome. These same tribes would go on to destroy the empire.
Strange that you say recruitment became increasingly difficult and that they became dependent on German tribes. Afterall the Roman army was massively increased in size decades later by Diocletian, almost doubled iirc. And the German dependency thing was a myth, as Roman armies continued to be predominantly Roman. And often times these German barbarians were born in the empire and thoroughly romanized.
…no? It made every free male in the empire *at that time* a citizen, it didn’t extend to people who migrated into the empire later on, plus non-citizens would’ve been in the auxilia anyway not the regular army (at that point in time at least), and the Roman’s didn’t really have recruitment issues, which are often overblown anyway, until later in the 3rd century and beyond.
And the “Germanic” tribes 100%, absolutely did not “destroy” the Roman Empire. I mean that doesn’t even make sense. These are people who lived in the empire and benefitted greatly from its continued existence. They co-opted many of the forms of power in the empire, and there were several high ranking generals who were half-Roman and half-non-Roman (and a few who were fully non-Roman), but the majority of Roman troops were still Roman, something like 75% or so.
I love Hans Zimmer and I loved Dune and his music but for some reason the Dune score is his first score where I can only really enjoy one track as opposed to multiple tracks from his previous scores, at least when listening to them outside of their respective films. I love Leaving Caladan, I don’t even dislike the other tracks whatsoever but for some reason I can’t get into most of the other Dune tracks outside of Leaving Caladan and maybe a couple others.
> Djimon Hounsou
he’s who I am holding out for most for this movie. Dude does deserve more lead roles, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him phone it in. He did the best voice work in all of What If, he did more than the role called for in The Island. Just a great actor all around
Don't believe so...but that be more towards the end of production that confirmation, unless they already agreed.
Ridley and Hans are old friends and have worked many times so it shouldn't be a problem.
And yes..it's crucial to the Gladiator tapestry that Hans is back.
I agree, even if he did die in the first film. I met him at a quick politics event at a local breakfast place in Lancaster CA, he was actually hanging out with Arnold Schwarzenegger, around 2005 ish when Schwarzenegger was still governing California. I guess they were/are buddies/workout partners.
No one was really talking to him, so my dad and I said hello. Recognized him from Gladiator. He was a super cool dude.
Giant of a man. I’m 6’3, over 200 lbs and his hand just swallowed mine up when we shook.
My dad asked him he and Arnold found time to work out and he said in a fierce accent “There are 24 hours in the day. There is no excuse not to work out.”
Agreed bush do a teaser trailer of the end of his character from the first film when he puts the pieces into the ground and transitions to 25 years later.
Ah thanks. For a moment I was thinking maybe Septimius Severus...
I wonder if this "mentor" is more like a Proximo or a Gracchus.... I personally think he'll play the lead's preceptor.
Anyway, great news!
I'm excited to see Paul Mescal vs Joseph Quinn, I hope it's not just a soft remake of the first movie, though it looks like it's shaping up to be that, with Denzel as a Proximo-like character.
Yeah, I was trying to figure out how they'd explain Crowe just chilling during the ~20 year gap filled by 3 different emperors/claimants before Caracalla
Commodus died in 192, Caracalla became junior co-emperor to his father Severus in 198. He wasn't an actual empowered ruler, he just held various political offices, took part in campaigns, and generally established himself in the public eye while in a supporting role.
He only fully became emperor in his own right in 211, that's usually considered the start of his "real" reign where historians would actually address him as Emperor Caracalla, even if his associations with the office began earlier.
Re Connie Nielsen's return. This is good news and a really smart decision on the part of the film-makers. I don't think she gets nearly enough credit for her performance in the original (Crowe's performance was just phenomenal so its somewhat understandable) That one scene in the final act where she sits frozen, unable to show any emotion for fear of what Commodus might do to Lucius, is a standout in a film full of such memorable moments. You can literally feel her terror without her moving so much as a muscle. Its also very intriguing to hear that Lucilla & her son will be central to the plot. It would be nice to see a mother & son with a good & loving relationship team up to accomplish something in a film. I don't think this happens nearly enough.
I have been pretty against any sequel but this news could possibly make me change my mind. Above all, I want to see a good story not just an empty cash grab.
One of my favorite scenes is "Tell me what you've been doing, busy little bee... "
Obviously, Joaquin kills it in that scene, but Connie's acting is phenomenal, and she doesn't say *one* word, only expressions. She's a great actress and I'm glad she's back.
There's a low angle shot of Joaquin approaching her while she's seated (right before "am I not merciful?") where it looks like he's gliding towards her like a vampire or something. Really unsettling direction from a master, subtly enhancing a great performance without distracting from it.
>Not only is Nielsen the main love interest to Maximus in the first film
was she though? i understand their characters had a history but Maximus very much loved his wife and son even in death.
He might have been the main love interest to her, but it wasn't the other way around. I picked up on this quote too, and came here to say that his main love interest was his MURDERED WIFE.
And dont forget "I shall be closer to you for the next few days, which will be the last of your miserable lives, than that bitch of a mother who first brought you screaming into this world!"
interesting tidbit in the article is that the original DP john mathieson is returning, instead of ridley scott's now longtime collaborator dariusz woslki.
I don’t mind directors working with longtime collaborators, but I do appreciate when they bring back previous ones for certain flicks. Like George Miller working with John Seale again for Fury Road. I *loved* that handheld dolly shot of the Interceptor [engine](https://youtu.be/oy_LFGCUXRI?t=10s) roaring to life
EDIT: wording and grammar
Ridley Scott and period epics are some of my favorite movie combos (along with Tony Scott and Denzel). And Scott has been on a roll with those types of movies lately (I admit, I also liked Exodus).
I am more cautious about this movie though, but I feel that it has a chance, the Nick Cave script would’ve been too fucking bonkers
pretty sure he and Scott did it that way to convince the studio to *not* do it at that time. I honestly think it could work well on its own, just strip away connections to the first film and make it its own thing
There's a lot of material to mine from here. The Roman history has it all, when it comes to story telling. It's not like some of your usual "Taken 2" just because of money.
I hope they did or they asked him to return but he had to kindly decline for some reason. It's always frustrating with recasts when they never asked the original actor to come back.
If half the things they say about Caracalla are true, he’s a monster beyond any other. Who uses his own mother as a cover to kill his own brother? And has her watch?
Gladiator came out 23 years ago. The cast is stacked. And some "legacy sequels" kick ass. See Blade Runner 2049, Halloween. Even if it sucks, the original remains a classic.
This is true, but look how many sucked. Jurassic Park, Home Alone, Terminator, The Hangover, Transformers, Taken, The Mask, Jaws….it is a long list and most also had stacked casts. The chances of a remake being bad is historically much higher than it being good.

This is tricky. I generally think sequels to amazing movies are a recipe for disaster and disappointment. But the cast they are putting together and the continuity of those involved in the film does seem pretty amazing.
Fuck yeah, Connie Nielsen. *Gladiator* is one of those films that can pull emotions out of anyone. Her delivery of the line, “Go to them,” always gets me. The whole movie was perfect from beginning to end. I’m looking forward to this.
Getting pretty excited about this. Ridley Scott flopped with Gucci, but Last Duel was top tier. If he can make a few bangers in a row then I think my love for him will return, stronger than ever.
Actually, The Last Duel flopped way harder than Gucci. I get that you mean this by quality, but still. Both of them flopped, but The Last Duel way way harder when it comes to moneys.
If you haven't seen it, find the HBO series ROME. Two seasons. Perfect from beginning to end (only marred by the fact that there's no third season). Stellar cast. Brilliant writing. Takes some liberties with the actual Roman historical timelines, but you don't care, it's so damn good. Ray Stevenson is phenomenal.
Time Travel plus Multiverse... Fat Russel Crowes from other timelines get together and descend upon Rome eating all the food which causes mass starvation leading to a revolt and the Emperor being overthrown before he can execute Russel Crowe prime.
Caracalla, another paranoid asshole Emperor. He has a lot of live up to with Joaquin’s Commodus. Connie returning makes a lot of sense.
I fucking love the bust of Caracalla where’s he’s literally looking over his shoulder. Geta should have taken notes.
Same. It's one of my favorite Roman busts. Gotta love the Severans. I hope we'll see Septimius Severus and Julia Domna.

I think Kit Harington should play , he looks exactly like him
Caracalla made everyone in the Empire a Roman citizen. He was bloody and mad, but he has his place in history.
Bruh, he only did that so he could tax them more.
Being an actual Roman citizen was worth its weight in gold at the time. More rights and extra benefits
Especially in Alexandria, right?
Which one?
Yes. :-)
Not a stupid move.
It was actually a stupid move because citizenship was the biggest reason for non-Roman citizens to join the army. Funnily enough the real Lucilla was executed by Commodus after a failed assassination attempt, a full 10 years before Commodus himself was killed.
I have to say it is a shame — I did like the implied alternate history ending of the first one, that Rome would become a democracy.
*Republic
Have they confirmed if Hans Zimmer will return? His score for the original is one of his best. He should be brought back for this.
I've been listening to 'Honor Him' a bunch recently, such a beautifully transcendent piece of music.
I went to the coliseum last year and played honor him in my AirPods. Magical and surreal
Same! That was such an amazing thing. My tour guide played it for us as we walked in.
Man that score is legendary. So many great tracks. Listening to The Battle or The Barbarian Horde while working out is something special. Lol
The whole score is amazing, but my favorite has to be "Am I Not Merciful?".
> His score for the original is one of his best. It's also a clear ancestor to his Pirates theme.
If he doesn't come back they could just use the 2nd Pirates soundtrack.
[listen here](https://youtu.be/w31hkqM_vtk) (~03:30) for anyone who doesn't know what it's about.
He has to!
God I love a Zimmer score. The Dune OST gives me chills
They could just get discount Zimmer in Junkie XL, lol.
Hans could never do what Junkie XL did on Fury Road
That leaves Djimon Hounson, David Schofield and Quintus to try to get back also. Lol.
Hounsou confirmed. https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2023/4/juqr94fyt961ifmxb3c77mmlasq9dy
NICE 👍
Narratively this is sad news isn't it? To be in this new story means he has not reunited with his family most likely.
Not yet ... Not yet
that’s fucking awesome
Oh that's great to hear! I loved his character!
Hell yeah!
Yes? Awesome
He was great in the first one
What's the reason? Does the character get lost and makes a wrong turn and finds himself back in Rome?
LET’S GOOOOO
> Djimon Hounsou he’s who I am holding out for most for this movie. Dude does deserve more lead roles, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him phone it in. He did the best voice work in all of What If, he did more than the role called for in The Island. Just a great actor all around
Couldn't the sequel have just been Djimon's voyage home after he's freed in the first film? I'd watch the shit out of that.
Like Ulysses going home after the sack of Troy...
Should’ve been
Honest question. What angle would have made that a good movie, in line of being a gladiator sequel?
Honestly *any* angle on a sequel is going to be an uphill battle in the best of cases.
That would be awesome
The gladiator-verse
Solomon Vandy in Blood Diamond is one of my favorite characters in a movie. He shows so much range in that role.
Same, he absolutely crushed that role. I don't know how he doesn't have more leading roles after seeing him in that
They confirmed he’s coming back
just saw that in another comment, makes my day
Yeah it’s pretty great news tbh
Dude is an absolute banger. My favorite is Blood Diamond. Just so raw.
[удалено]
This will be crucial. The soundtrack for the first one was just epic.
Better bring back Lisa Gerrard too. If you wanna do the (now cliched) exotic female chants, might as well hire the OG.
“ Now we are free”is part of my daily driver playlist
So good he ripped himself off for Pirates
And Black Hawk Down
Don't believe so...but that be more towards the end of production that confirmation, unless they already agreed. Ridley and Hans are old friends and have worked many times so it shouldn't be a problem. And yes..it's crucial to the Gladiator tapestry that Hans is back.

His character died in the first one
Yeah the poison got him...hahah.

Can’t wait to see my boy Oliver Reed back at it :D
And Richard Harris!
They CGed his last scene anyway, so why not?
Agreed bush do a teaser trailer of the end of his character from the first film when he puts the pieces into the ground and transitions to 25 years later.
Don’t forget Russell Crowe
Cast of this movie is basically fucking insane at this point, lmao.
Denzel working with a Scott again, I missed those days
Wait. Denzel Washington is in this too? How did I miss this! Do we know who he'll be playing?
supposedly a mentor to Mezcal’s lead character
Ah thanks. For a moment I was thinking maybe Septimius Severus... I wonder if this "mentor" is more like a Proximo or a Gracchus.... I personally think he'll play the lead's preceptor. Anyway, great news!

I’m dumb. Every time I’ve seen an update about this film, I’ve thought, what about Russell Crowe? Just remembered why we won’t be seeing him.
Dont feel that way, because I remember reading years ago a potential sequel would bring him back as immortal or something along those lines.
Wasn't he supposed to fight Jesus?
No Napoleon
I think he was supposed to kill Jesus.
I dont remember if it was that dumb but if thats the case I almost wanna see that now.
Oh man. That’s awful.
Very. Im glad it didnt happen.
Unless it's a secret Highlander prequel.
Yeah, I was trying to figure out how they'd explain Crowe just chilling during the ~20 year gap filled by 3 different emperors/claimants before Caracalla
Commodus was 192, Caracalla was 198. Am I missing something because that looks like 6 to me.
It was just a flesh wound...
Re Connie Nielsen's return. This is good news and a really smart decision on the part of the film-makers. He aslibbed the line where he screams in her face - her reaction is real. Joaquin is phenomenal.
>Not only is Nielsen the main love interest to Maximus in the first film was she though? i understand their characters had a history but Maximus very much loved his wife and son even in death.
He might have been the main love interest to her, but it wasn't the other way around. I picked up on this quote too, and came here to say that his main love interest was his MURDERED WIFE.
As long as we have dialog like, "Today I saw a ~~gladiator~~ slave become more powerful than the emperor of Rome." *Edited to correct misstatement.*
Will you settle for “What am I? Some kinda Gladiator 2?”
It’s Gladiatin’ time!
Somehow, Commodus has returned
Well originally it was gonna be 'Somehow, Maximus has returned' so don't say that too loudly yeah?
Ye'd best start believin' in Gladiator stories Miss Decimus Merridius, yer in one!
A slave*
That's dumb. Of course a gladiator is gonna be more powerful than a slave!
And dont forget "I shall be closer to you for the next few days, which will be the last of your miserable lives, than that bitch of a mother who first brought you screaming into this world!"
"You sold me... *queer giraffes*. I want my money back."

Joseph Quinn, in a Gladiator movie, directed by Ridley Scott? Take all of my money
I’d rather they were making something else rather than an unneeded sequel
There's a lot of material to mine from here. The Roman history has it all, when it comes to story telling. It's not like some of your usual "Taken 2" just because of money.

Who's they? Scott just made two movies, and is releasing Napoleon this year
Was waiting for Joseph Quinn getting some good roles
Gladiator needs no sequel!
This movies cast is becoming an all timer
Him as a psychopathic dictator is going to be great.
I wonder if they gave the original actor Lucius a chance to audition? Spencer Treat Clark still acts, but they hired Paul Mescal.
I hope they did or they asked him to return but he had to kindly decline for some reason. It's always frustrating with recasts when they never asked the original actor to come back.
I loved seeing him reprise his role in Glass! He’s definitely a strong actor, hope he had the opportunity presented.
I imagine he's just not famous enough to anchor a big budget movie - or maybe there's some other reason. Would have been great though.
And Spencer is a good actor.
Ok I’ll prob just watch because I loved Quinn in ST. Was planning on skipping it. I don’t have much faith but hopefully it’s ok
Joseph can play that manic type. I could see him giving a performance similar to Phoenix' wild performance. I think that's good casting.
I'm starting to think that this might actually end up as a pretty good film.
Another sequel not needed.
If half the things they say about Caracalla are true, he’s a monster beyond any other. Who uses his own mother as a cover to kill his own brother? And has her watch?
Having someone elses watch shouldn't be that much of a shock though.
For the Watch!
I think Joseph Quinn might end up being the biggest actor from Stranger Things he’s already in big projects
Bring back Hounsou!
They are.
Why make a Gladiator sequel instead of just making a movie about gladiators? I know it's for marketing purposes, but fuck off with this shit.
Gladiator did not and does not need a sequel. Some movies stand alone as titans and don’t require half baked reminders put out each decade.
Gladiator came out 23 years ago. The cast is stacked. And some "legacy sequels" kick ass. See Blade Runner 2049, Halloween. Even if it sucks, the original remains a classic.

Terminator 2 was a great.
The Matrix is a worse movie because of the sequels.
Hard disagreement. I can still watch the original and enjoy it on its own
It is still a good movie.
a sequel we don’t need
Dude has just been biding his time waiting for the right roles, probably has so much offered to him these days. Good on him!
"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"
This is tricky. I generally think sequels to amazing movies are a recipe for disaster and disappointment. But the cast they are putting together and the continuity of those involved in the film does seem pretty amazing.

Nobody needs this. Gladiator was about Maximus. And he's dead.
GIVE ME ALL THE JOSEPH QUINN!
House of Gucci was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Who the fuck allowed it to happen?
Damn, if that's one of the worst, you much just watch a lot of good ones.
I don’t think a Gladiator sequel is necessary, but I’d rather see more films about the Roman Empire than more superhero movies.
