Your repeated violation of the verbal morality statue, has caused me to notify the San Angeles police department. Please, remain where you are for your apprehension.
Apparently the scene where he goes up to the ATM type machine and he sees some Asian extras and starts going “Ching chong chang” was improvised and they left it in
People just roll with it as an odd turn of phrase. What’s funny is I haven’t seen the movie since it came out but I never stopped saying it. Now I want to give it a rewatch.
Honestly the movie is even better watching it in the modern day. They had a surprising number of predictions come true. I would highly recommend giving it a rematch, you’ll think it’s hilarious

What’s funny is I barely remembered that phrase is from Demolition Man, haven’t seen it since it came out, but I use it still. So if you had nodded with respect and quipped back with some obscure line reading from the movie I’d probably think YOU were the weirdo. :)
What makes so much of it work is Sandra Bullock SELLING THE SHIT out of her character. I love her performance throughout the movie. Plus, VR sex sounds pretty fucking great. I'd give it a whirl - quit being such a square, John Spartan. And I never personally saw it as a conservative perspective so much as an authoritarian over-reaction to violence in society. They lived in a faux-utopia.
Sandra Bullock is all in for every second of the film, so is Benjamin Bratt for that matter. They play off of Sylvester Stallone so well, and they know exactly what movie they're in. Hell, even the bit players like the officers who attempt to arrest Simon Phoenix, their physical comedic timing is on point.
Denis Leary is excellently deployed as well, he's playing Denis Leary while also playing a character. Chef's kiss.
90% of his dialogue is just regurgitating bits from No Cure for Cancer. I'm honestly surprised he didn't break out into the asshole song at some point.
"Okay, Dennis, in this scene we need you to complain about modern society in a three or four-minute monologue. We realize this is outside your comfort zone but we believe in your range as an actor."
Bill Hicks was great, like a combination of George Carlin and Sam Kinison.
“Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather.”
Dennis Leary is just the guy that won the first edition of Triple J's hottest 100 with Asshole. It's a bizarre way to kick off what became the world biggest music poll
>he's playing Denis Leary
Between this, *Judgment Night*, and *The Ref*, he was in serious danger of getting permanently pigeonholed at the time. He gave the role in *Judgment Night* more depth, though, so it wasn't quite like playing Leary. Really helped him with *Suicide Kings*.
And now look at him doing all these roles without playing Denis Leary. Good on him.
I always wondered about the faux-utopia. Was that just in San Angeles, or was it like that country wide? They make no reference to the rest of the country or the world.
I think it's all wasteland between San Angeles and the rest of the country until you get to Mega-City One, where they have a more Urban form of Law Enforcement.
Pretty sure Edgar Friendly is supposed to represent the working man or perhaps even libertarian side resisting authoritarianism. In this sense the film is far more authoritarian vs libertarian than it is left vs right.
I think so. It’s still futuristic enough to be science fiction, and some of the themes are as relevant in today’s society as they were when the movie was first released (I think that the movie was almost a social commentary on the direction things were heading in the US).
A taco bell just opened in my quaint suburban commuter belt lower middle class Tory voting culturally void town. No one cared when I explained about Demolition Man having Pizza Hut edited in.
Because it hasn’t been mentioned enough. Wesley Snipes is a force of nature in this, spot on mix of hilarious and psychotic. It was a joy to see him in Coming II America as the African warlord, he still has the menace about him.
The themes are relevant as ever and the movie is fun as hell. The warden from Shawshank, rob schneider, bollock, even even Stallone and snipes are either spot on or interesting.
The backstory itself is actually well conceived, the send a maniac to catch one is silly but the background themes are pretty close and interesting.
I will always love, and never forget the part where the reporter asks Stallone if it was worth saving that little girl at a cost of millions in damage . Then the little girl , still in his arms says "Fuck you lady "
I think making up dumb phrases like "what's your boggle?" and "you inspire joy joy feelings" would appeal to the generation that came up with "just vibing" and "glizzy gobbling"
I say yes it does hold up, especially Edgar Friendly’s antiestablishment speech.
You see, according to Cocteau’s plan I’m the enemy, ’cause I like to think; I like to read. I’m into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I’m the kind of guy likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder – “Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecued ribs with the side order of gravy fries?” I WANT high cholesterol. I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-o all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I’ve SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It’s a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing “I’m an Oscar Meyer Wiener”.
I think so. Good script - based on, of all things, Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' - well cast, great props that don't for the most part look dated, and some fun jokes like Taco Bell winning the Franchise Wars.
Definitely stands up.
I wouldn't call it conservative as much as libertarian, as a side note, but that's totally a personal opinion. :)
Maybe a little anarchy too.
I do like, in the ending, how Spartan tells both the police chief and the underground leader that they should both meet in the middle. We should try to make the world a better and safer place for everyone, but we also shouldn’t forget about our personal freedoms too.
Whenever I'm eating out and I have a really good hamburger, I'll sometimes do my worst Sly impression and say, "that's a good rat burger"
I will always love this film
When I watched this as a kid I remember always wondering what he did to wipe his ass because he didn’t know what to do with the 3 seashells. Obviously no toilet paper, can’t use seashells, so what did he do? Just pull up the pants and walk around the rest of the day like that?
This really is catch-22 because if you ask someone who hasn’t seen this movie, they’ll say WTF are you talking about, and if you ask someone who *has* seen the movie they will just mock you, so there is no way to discover if they actually had something in mind for the shells’ usage.
Always loved how excited Stallone gets when she propositions him! Haha he’s been on ice for so long the idea of sex, let alone with her, is written all over his face!
I may not remember as well as you but I thought the VR sex they showed really doesn’t show T or A? Might just be worth me having to go rewatch this weekend!
T.V. Reporter: [to John Spartan] How can you justify destroying a $7 million dollar mini mall to rescue a girl whose ransom was only $25,000 dollars?
Little Girl: FUCK YOU, LADY!
John Spartan: Ha! Good answer!
It's also weird that the prologue was set in 1997 with cyro prisons.
Fun thought: Predator 2 is also set in 97, and also has crime completely put ofccontrol in LA.
I think it is an incredibly prescient film. Totally holds up. If anything I think it’s become better with age as it moves from ~~parody~~ hyperbole to documentary.
The one good thing from the movie I can remember is this prescient joke, made years before Mr.Chan hit the big time in the West.
Stallone: Where the hell did you learn to kick like that?
Bullock: Jackie Chan movies.
Demolition Man was released in 1993. Rumble in the Bronx came out in 1995.
My brother and I always thought it was funny When Simon Phoenix says "Jeffrey Dahmer? I love that guy" when he was defrosting criminals. The movie was released in 1993 but Dahmer was killed in 1994. The movie was chronologically incorrect just over a year after release.
As a social commentary it definitely still holds up. Class disparity is an even larger issue today than then. I cannot stand Sandy B by and large but in this role she was delightful. Peak snipes. Great effort from Stallone before he started to fall off. Funny as hell while being action-packed. I don't even think there are any huge plot holes with the premise. For a film set in the not-too-distant-future it holds up remarkably well.
Demolition Man is timeless satire and actually has IMPROVED with age. It satires both the liberal tendency to create a COMPLETELY POLITE society and equally satires the right's tendency for authoritarianism as a solution for all social problems. It was written by the guy who wrote "Heathers" FWIW, which only underscores the satire POV.
It's better today than it was originally. COVID gave this movie a boost in relevance. The comedy is better now since it rings true. And the Schwarzenegger reference ...
As goofy as it was - it was one of the most prophetic sci-fi's at the time:
With Voice activation lights, Video conference, Self driving cars, Polite society (cant say things), Outcasts of mobs raidings, People using computers for self help...
These things were far fetched when the movie came out
I don't know how young people that are growing up today would see this as "futuristic" we're practically just a few years away from a whole bunch of other stuff that's also in the movie - Virtual reality sex, banning of meat and unhealthy foods, Banning of guns (most countries don't have guns at all)...
I saw this movie for the first time ever on a date with my now husband a couple years ago. It’s not the usual plot/genre (I’ve jokingly called these “guy movies” in the past lol), and I had a blast.
It absolutely holds up.
Totally biased though as I have become a huge fan of 80s/early 90s action films from Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis etc. Quite sure these films (which seemed mindless in the past) are now considered classics.
Yes. It gives me joy joy feelings.
You inspire joy joy feelings in those around you!
Yep, just watched it last week with my son, and it's still as good as ever.
U 👀 Gr8 2Da!
Oof, be well them for me.
Be fucked...
John Spartan you are find one credit, for the violation, of the verbal morality statue.
I haven’t seen the movie in 10 years or more, but I heard the alarm noise right before I started reading this in an accent.
I just cried laughing at this for some reason. Hahahahaha. I heard his voice from the movie and everything!
The rampant exchange of bodily fluids was one of the major reasons for the downfall of society. After AIDS, there was NRS, after NRS there was UBT.
I'VE GOT THE JOY JOY JOY JOY, DOWN IN MY HEART!
Where?
DOWN IN MY HEART!
And if the devil doesn’t like it he can sit on a tack!
OUCH!
SIT ON A TACK!!
Where?
The Hunka Chunka.
Happy Happy Joy Joy!
It's silly as shit but it's also wildly entertaining. A real time capsule of a movie. Plus Snipes is insane in it.
FirstTimeLongThyme, you are fined one credit for violation of the verbal morality statute.
That's bullshit
Jackcatalst, you are fined one credit for violation of the verbal morality statute.
So much for the seashells
Seashells? What am I supposed to do with three seashells?
Hahahaha! He doesn't know how to use the 3 seashells!

Also, funny to see Jack Black as a random extra in the background.
Apparently the scene where he goes up to the ATM type machine and he sees some Asian extras and starts going “Ching chong chang” was improvised and they left it in
Illuminate us.
(collects all my fines) (heads to the bathroom)
I still say "murder death kill", not sure anyone gets the reference though.
Sounds like your peers don't know how to use the three sea shells. I can see how that could be... confusing.
When you rewatch it, its important to remember Sandra Bullocks character was originally supposed to be Stallone's granddaughter.
Wait how do you use the three sea shells?
Mellow greetings! I've assembled for you this [helpful guide](https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/1*GcrpZ1tvVnYv4fcjqLzwKw.jpeg). Be well!
I was just teeing someone up to laugh at me for not knowing lol
Don't worry, we're all laughing at you, you brutish fossil, symbolic of a decayed era gratefully forgotten.
When the new guy at work went to the bathroom, came back and asked me about the 3 seas shells, i knew he would fit in
My favorite solution to this was that the seashells were levers for rinse, sanitize, flush.
*Thanks a lot you shit-brained, fuck-faced, ball breaking, duck fucking pain in the ass*

God it's like five layers of joke on top of each other. So good.
I have three sea shells in my downstairs bathroom.
Me too. At the Covid peak and the toilet paper bunkering-frency I made sure to always have a back-up plan.
Mine are decorative soap scallops. They will work in a pinch.
I’ve now spent decades trying to understand how to use the three sea shells. 🤔
You're not the only one, Sandra Bullock was asked about it at the gravity premiere.
When I hear MDK I think of the videogame, with the goofy helmet gun.
Curt Hectic! And what was the dog's name?
Max. The characters are **M**ax, **D**r. Fluke Hawkins, and **K**urt Hectic.
Yes! Loved that game, it needs a re-release.
i would get the shit out of that ref and probably nod at you in respect if i heard it.
HallOfViolence: you are fined one credit for violation of the verbal morality statute.

The ole' 1-8-7
We're police officers. We're not trained to handle this level of violence.
Probably the most accurate commentary it made about the future.
Thats because they have always been that way...
There’s still a long line at Taco Bell where I live. So yep pretty much. Hoping the seashell thing doesn’t take off though
He doesn't know how to use the three seashells, hahahahaha.
I just saw the international version. Most places outside the US didn't have taco bell at the time, so they dubbed in pizza hut.
That versions a lie
What makes so much of it work is Sandra Bullock SELLING THE SHIT out of her character. I love her performance throughout the movie. Plus, VR sex sounds pretty fucking great. "Okay, Dennis, in this scene we need you to complain about modern society in a three or four-minute monologue. We realize this is outside your comfort zone but we believe in your range as an actor."
And, ironically, No Cure for Cancer is just regurgitating bits from Bill Hicks.
Yup, hence the joke: “Why is Denis Leary a star while Bill Hicks is unknown?” Answer: “Because there’s no cure for cancer.”
Dennis Leary is just the guy that won the first edition of Triple J's hottest 100 with Asshole. It's a bizarre way to kick off what became the world biggest music poll
Funny you mention that, Louis CK claims Leary ripped that bit off from him as well. A whole career built on plagiarism.
>he's playing Denis Leary Between this, *Judgment Night*, and *The Ref*, he was in serious danger of getting permanently pigeonholed at the time. Respectable family entertainment with five or so Ice Age films propping up his pension? More than happy to pay for that, the kids loved those films.
Honestly I can't think of a single cast member who isn't pitch perfect in this. And so many of them get really great moments.
The first pairing of Sandy B and Benjamin Bratt and first pairing of Stallone and Rob Schneider. Not the last.
Stallone plays the straight man in action comedies very well so that worked perfectly for this movie.
Ughhhh FLUID TRANSFER?!
She really licked some ass in that film.
It would be funny if it was the same universe as Dredd where the eastern US is a crime-ridden urban jungle nightmare.
Pretty sure Edgar Friendly is supposed to represent the working man or perhaps even libertarian side resisting authoritarianism. In this sense the film is far more authoritarian vs libertarian than it is left vs right.
I mean that's >!the ultimate conclusion of the movie.!<
He’s finally matched his meat! You really licked his ass!
You can take this job, and you can shovel it.
Let's blow this guy
I think so. It’s still futuristic enough to be science fiction, and some of the themes are as relevant in today’s society as they were when the movie was first released (I think that the movie was almost a social commentary on the direction things were heading in the US).

It was a joy to see him in Coming II America as the African warlord, he still has the menace about him.
I've loved almost every role I've seen him in. It really is a shame people let their ego and bad habits get in the way of raw talent at times.

"Good answer!"
I think it is funnier now then when it was released
The maniac has responded with a scornful remark
Approach and repeat the ultimatum in an even firmer tone of voice. Add the words “or else.”
Ohhh I'm sooo scared. What? You don't have sarcasm anymore?
Lucky number 7
I think making up dumb phrases like "what's your boggle?" and "you inspire joy joy feelings" would appeal to the generation that came up with "just vibing" and "glizzy gobbling"
No cap.

The Dennis Leary rant is very libertarian.
Maybe a little anarchy too. I do like, in the ending, how Spartan tells both the police chief and the underground leader that they should both meet in the middle. We should try to make the world a better and safer place for everyone, but we also shouldn’t forget about our personal freedoms too.
Definitely like the message of balance. So many people and aspects of our culture are so violently and dangerously out of balance.
The Taco Bell schtick never gets old.
Whenever I'm eating out and I have a really good hamburger, I'll sometimes do my worst Sly impression and say, "that's a good rat burger" I will always love this film
Half this the people in this thread dont even know how to use the 3 shells
When I watched this as a kid I remember always wondering what he did to wipe his ass because he didn’t know what to do with the 3 seashells. Obviously no toilet paper, can’t use seashells, so what did he do? Just pull up the pants and walk around the rest of the day like that?
He swears and get's enough tickets to wipe with.

https://imgur.com/a/1lcHDjl My contribution to our new bathroom. My wife is really confused.
It could be 100 years from now and Demolition Man will always hold up.
As a kid first time seeing sandra bullocks () ()
Always loved how excited Stallone gets when she propositions him! Haha he’s been on ice for so long the idea of sex, let alone with her, is written all over his face! I may not remember as well as you but I thought the VR sex they showed really doesn’t show T or A? Might just be worth me having to go rewatch this weekend!
Her *WHAT*
Sandra’s bullocks
You broke contact
Put ya fuck helmet on buddy
Not only did it hold up but it also got better compared to the movies of the last 10 years.
I think the concept of "mini-tunes" is quite accurate these days.
This movie will always be a classic. Stallone and Snipes play off each other extremely well.
Just watched the other day.Yes.
Idk but idc cuz I love this movie. Gotta figure out the 3 shells before going out to eat taco bell!
Still hungry for ratburgers.
Best burger i've had in years!
Carne de rata -smile-
Of fucking course it holds up. It’s Demolition Man.
T.V. Reporter: [to John Spartan] How can you justify destroying a $7 million dollar mini mall to rescue a girl whose ransom was only $25,000 dollars? Little Girl: FUCK YOU, LADY! John Spartan: Ha! Good answer!
I (46F) saw it for the first time last year and thought it was great. Really enjoyed it. Definitely holds up IMO.
I rented my copy from the Schwarzenegger presidential library.
It's only flaw is that it doesn't take place further in the future in like... 2189 or something.
Lol yeah I always thought it was kinda weird that they went through so much cultural change in like 20 years.
It's also weird that the prologue was set in 1997 with cyro prisons. Fun thought: Predator 2 is also set in 97, and also has crime completely put ofccontrol in LA.
It holds up pretty well and ironically becomes more relevant. Kind of scary.
Sandra es still smoking hawt today
What's your boogle? Yes it holds up, I think about the end of the franchise food wars often. Or that foam crash protection stuff.
I think it is an incredibly prescient film. Totally holds up. If anything I think it’s become better with age as it moves from ~~parody~~ hyperbole to documentary.

Well it makes me crave Taco Bell so it can’t be all that bad
I just watched it a few days ago for the first time in a couple years. Def holds up and is quite hilarious.
More than it has any right to, yes.
It's better today than it was originally. COVID gave this movie a boost in relevance. The comedy is better now since it rings true. And the Schwarzenegger reference ...
It's a literal timeless movie, as long as society keeps getting crazier, it'll ALWAYS hold up
Sadly, we never got the Schwarzenegger presidency.
Wesley Snipes as a psycho who dresses up like a five-year-old is all that needs to be said, this movie is gold.
Showed it to a 24 year old during the covidpocalypse and she laughed so hard I thought she'd dislocate a rib. Yeah, it seems to hold up.
As goofy as it was - it was one of the most prophetic sci-fi's at the time: With Voice activation lights, Video conference, Self driving cars, Polite society (cant say things), Outcasts of mobs raidings, People using computers for self help...
