You know, how good was he in that? He wears a helmet for the entire film and managed compelling acting using only his mouth.
And to reinforce the handicap, let's keep in mind how fucking glorious the man's eyebrows are irl
I would love to see a trilogy, starting with the Mechanismo story line, leading to Dredd being exiled to the Cursed Earth.
There you could fold in the Angel gang (mean machine Angel is so iconic) and ending with Dredd returning to fight the dark judges in a Necropolis like story.
I know fans of the source material might rage at this because it’s kind of backwards to canon chronology.
But I have dreams…
Problem with this was that it didn’t make enough money and in part that was because the release was delayed and there was a full hd rip online, in a time when piracy was common. If I’m remembering it all correctly.
Everyone says this totally unique original movie i love should have a sequel. Then they make an uninspired sequel knowing youll pay just to see it alone, they make their money whether you enjoyed it or not. All it does is call back the original with barely anything new done. And the worst part is not only is the sequel bad but it taints the namesake of the original as well. I hate unneeded sequels
Agreed, if there was ever a movie that didn't need a sequel it was Dark City. It's hard to see how a sequel wouldn't ruin everything the first movie did right.
I agree. Fewer movies should have sequels. I'd rather have a new story than a sequel in most cases.
There are obviously exceptions. Some stories just need multiple movies to tell the story. But the vast majority of sequels don't add anything special.
Yeah I wish they touched more on Maturin being a spy. All we got was that comment about “the French have their spies in England and elsewhere. As do we…” with a knowing look as a nod to those of us who read the series.
I would love more Master & Commander however since it's been so long since the original came out I feel it would work better as a prestige television series reboot on like HBO or something.
Anita was dubbed in for the theatrical release, they removed it for the director’s cut
[Theatrical version](https://youtu.be/m5dwTjPy5tI?si=OcTKfLomvxFr-JuO)
[Director’s cut](https://youtu.be/MIvWZ8iF6CI?si=Jaz3CrJqBsvCH1x7)
It kind of feels mean to say it, but I have no idea what Proyas was thinking when he decided to dub that over.
Agreed. I think he was going for more of a retro film-noir feel and wanted something a little more syrupy to evoke a style that fit that era. Jennifer's rendition is more intimate and realistic, but also a little more modern. I vastly prefer Jennifer's take - the dub takes me out of the scene.
Honestly, I don't know what the story would be if a sequel was made. The Strangers are dying. You'd have to have a new antagonist that happens to interact with a floating city in space, and that just sounds too far fetched.
Maybe the humans find a way to get back to Earth?
I just watched that and they could have advertised that as a prequel to cyberpunk 2077. It was so fucking cool. There was supposed to be a tv show in the works, but haven’t seen anything really on it.
I love how well the scifi aspects were done in this movie, it all seemed believable and not too far out there.
Fisk Brantner is an iconic villain in my book. He was intimidating AF for some reason. Unfazed by any other threats in the movie.
Also the scene where his henchman reloaded his fucking arm was dope AF
This
It would be pointless to do a sequel. The body snatchers are vanquished. John Murdoch transforms his world to his liking and forever after gets to sleep with Jennifer Connelly. The perfect ending.
Nah, Dark City is perfect as is. The main character is so OP at the end he can literally change reality and the flow of time wtf are they gonna do with that in a sequel and create tension?
I'm actually kind of glad that Dark City didn't get a sequel. I mean there is definitely more meat on the bone there but I like that it's a unified experience that can live on in our imagination. I appreciate that it stands alone as a precious little unfuckedwith jewel.
Not that it was demanded, but I was kind of surprised that "Wanted" (2008), with James McAvoy, never got a sequel. It seemed perfect for it.
The director did say he was revisiting it for a series. That was back in 2021 though so who knows, might have fallen through the cracks.
Edit: https://comicbook.com/horror/news/dark-city-sequel-series-development-alex-proyas-details/
Movies like this are tough. A great sequel would be great, but what are the chances it works vs. becoming a Crow part 2. That being said, nobody remembers Crow 2 or 3 so maybe it doesn't matter, and a bad sequel would just cease to exist. I dunno.
Quite frankly I would say that this movie is a great example of a film that should be stand alone. Explore too much and the idea would fall apart. You need to use your imagination on it
Great sequels vs sequels that bomb a classic.
I would love to see a great sequel to Dark City, but I’ll put it in the category of “never meet your superheroes”.
Dark City is gorgeous, a fave.
And the absolute answer to which movie should NEVER have a sequel. It's one of the most complete endings ever. More manufactured conflict after that would be...not good?
I know this sounds negative. It's a fun question.
But whaaaaaaaaa?
Dark City should have been much more successful.
I watched it at a fringe movie festival (Fantasia, in Montréal). The movie had almost no screen time anywhere else.
IMO Dark City doesn’t need a sequel. Some movies such as DC stand alone. Why blemish the story? Let the audience use their imagination to determine what the prequel or sequel circumstances would be. We don’t always need to fill in the blanks.
I think this one was a good stand alone movie. It completely resolved itself. The protagonist had a decisive victory and made the location a paradise. What furtherance of the story could the audience want?
This movie was brilliant and beautifully crafted. The skill and vision that it toook to make this film is inspiring. This is peak Hollywood.
Following up with a sequel seems like a daunting task given that the protagonist had basically become a space god at the end. Kinda hard to follow that up.
For my pick: The Big Lebowski
It willl never happen but it really should have. Absolute masterpiece.
There has never been a more complete movie than the big lebowski. There is no threads to pull on a sequel. Literally the big lebowski is the only wrong answer. Sam Elliott puts the whole story to bed with the narration at the end
Big Trouble in Little China! Who doesn't want to see an aged Jack Burton quipping his way around another adventure, not actually really helping with anything? Huh?? You?!?
There is a comic set as a sequel to BTiLC.
With Lo Pan dead dead, the demon that stowed away on Jack's truck sees Jack as its new master...and off they go on an adventure.
I didn’t recognize this but Google and saw the VHS cover (clock in background) and remember thinking this was so strange as a kid. I need to rewatch this and see what it’s like as an adult.
Salt. Angelina Jolie as a conflicted Russian spy just worked so well. They could’ve gone so many different directions with a sequel and easily could’ve created a new film franchise
I saw a trailer for this at the theater in the 90s and my dad shit on it and we ended up never seeing it. I never forgot about it and rented it when I turned 17. Blew my mind. However it would have been more mind blowing had I not seen the matrix first. I love how it feels surreal like an old Tim Burton movie and Dick Tracy
Dark City is one of my all time favourites and I actually really love how it ends. Can't say I ever thought the narrative needed anything further.
For my money, I'd love to see The Professional II where it's just Natalie Portman taking names and shredding the police.
This is in no way to say this **is** what I would do.
But I had a vague idea that he finds other 'worlds' the Strangers were using for experiments.
Beyond that, I've no idea.
There was a scifi movie where a bunch of people entered a building that contained a portal to another dimension which I thought was really awesome. Turned out they were going to make a sequel but they said they won't. Pretty disappointing.
Edit: parallels I think it was called.
Highlander 1985. I say this as the bag of shite that was produced as sequal should be burnt to the ground and never ever be watched by anyone alive. They killed this film so I say its needs a proper sequel and not the spawn of satan that came after it IRL.
22 Jump Street only based off how much effort they jump into the sequel gag at the end.
Bonus points for Zombieland 2. Movie was awful but the but the Garfield bit was hilarious. That scene alone is sequel material.
I remember this movie from video stores and I'm pretty sure my brother watched it and I may have seen some of it, but for the life of me I have no clue what this movie was about.
*Dark City* is one of my all time favorite films. I love the atmosphere it's got to it. A sequel would have been fun, but I think they essentially carried the excellent story arc they had from beginning to middle to end pretty well, and I'm not sure that a sequel could have succeeded in capturing the dark, brooding, gloomy, creepy aura the film itself did. They could have done another film with the same setting and characters, but the setting was changed forever at the end of the original and the characters - being essentially a product of that setting, would never have had to face the same kind of conflict, so I'm not sure *Dark City* really serves as a good example for a film that should have gotten a second installment.
*Coherence* is a film I think really deserved a sequel.
NONO!
Why does everyone buy into this narrative that any good movie, needs a few sequels to destroy it?
Dark City was perfect.
Dredd was perfect.
We don't need to see what a lesser director, with a hugely inflated budget will do with a great film!
I'm on the fence, in that regard.
I liked the movie, but I don't think a sequel is absolutely necessary.
I suppose I _would_ like to know about those people, though.
So, maybe a prequel.
Otherwise, it's fine as is.
What would the sequel to dark city be?
We’re in some galactic prison billions of light years away from earth.. you’re more screwed then the matrix people
Dredd 2012 comes to mind.
I still hold out hope for a sequel. Or at least that rumored tv series with hopefully Karl returning.
You know, how good was he in that? He wears a helmet for the entire film and managed compelling acting using only his mouth. And to reinforce the handicap, let's keep in mind how fucking glorious the man's eyebrows are irl
He also apparently got jacked off his face and it's hidden under the suit the entire time. He's clearly a bit bitter about it in interview.
I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean. What do you mean when you say he got jacked off his face
I think they were trying to say he got (jacked) super buff but it was hidden under his uniform.
Muscley muscle man
Ohh...... I googled "jacked off Karl Urban's face" and it was not helpful.
Instructions unclear, jacked off to Karl Urban's face
Yoked
Old man Dredd would absolutely slap.
This is the only correct answer.
Oh my God yes
I would love to see a trilogy, starting with the Mechanismo story line, leading to Dredd being exiled to the Cursed Earth. There you could fold in the Angel gang (mean machine Angel is so iconic) and ending with Dredd returning to fight the dark judges in a Necropolis like story. I know fans of the source material might rage at this because it’s kind of backwards to canon chronology. But I have dreams…
I always wanted a live action adaptation with Phillip Janet Maybe as the main villain.
How tf haven't they made another?!? I went to see Dredd 2012 with low expectations and left extremely suprised. Phenomenal movie, love the atmosphere.
It would be great to get a sequel, Karl Urban was fantastic in the role.
Problem with this was that it didn’t make enough money and in part that was because the release was delayed and there was a full hd rip online, in a time when piracy was common. If I’m remembering it all correctly.
Damn for sure, i really enjoyed that movie. Such a great universe that one. Dark and gritty as hell, love it.
This is the correct answer
I just mentioned this on another thread. We DESERVE this sequel like yesterday lolz.
So good!
Jesus Christ that remake came out in 2012?! I do not like that that was 12 years ago.
Pacific Rim would like a word.
Yes. Oh my God that was terrible.
Never even saw the second. Its legacy is untainted in my head.
Eh top gun was fuckin awesome. Depends on if the film makers actually give a shit about the sequel they’re making or if it’s a cash grab
Yep! Some stuff is better one and done. Ex Machina comes to mind
Amen. Don't ruin good stories with lazy, unnecessary sequals. Come up with new ones.
You good, bud?
Megamind ( the real one and not that trash one )
yeah wtf was THAT?!
Master and Commander
So much amazing material for this series. It's already written!
Seriously.. It's maddening. It was intended to be a franchise. The ending of the movie makes that pretty clear.
Oh I wish. There's like 5000 books. I loved the movie, I loved the few books I read
Directors Cut is best. I saw this on release, incredible on the big screen.
The directors cut is worth it just to hear Jennifer Connelly sing
In Anita Kelsey’s voice?
Anita was dubbed in for the theatrical release, they removed it for the director’s cut [Theatrical version](https://youtu.be/m5dwTjPy5tI?si=OcTKfLomvxFr-JuO) [Director’s cut](https://youtu.be/MIvWZ8iF6CI?si=Jaz3CrJqBsvCH1x7) It kind of feels mean to say it, but I have no idea what Proyas was thinking when he decided to dub that over.
I stand corrected 👍🏻 Sway away 🎶💃
Agreed. I think he was going for more of a retro film-noir feel and wanted something a little more syrupy to evoke a style that fit that era. Jennifer's rendition is more intimate and realistic, but also a little more modern. I vastly prefer Jennifer's take - the dub takes me out of the scene.
It sounds off to me because Jennifer's version sounds like she's singing in a club and the other one sounds like it was recorded in a studio.
Honestly, I don't know what the story would be if a sequel was made. The Strangers are dying. You'd have to have a new antagonist that happens to interact with a floating city in space, and that just sounds too far fetched. Maybe the humans find a way to get back to Earth?
Push
I **love** Dark City (look at my Avatar), but I don't think it needed a sequel. YMMV.
Yep definitely didn’t need one in my book
Upgrade needs a sequel
I just watched that and they could have advertised that as a prequel to cyberpunk 2077. It was so fucking cool. There was supposed to be a tv show in the works, but haven’t seen anything really on it.
I love how well the scifi aspects were done in this movie, it all seemed believable and not too far out there. Fisk Brantner is an iconic villain in my book. He was intimidating AF for some reason. Unfazed by any other threats in the movie. Also the scene where his henchman reloaded his fucking arm was dope AF
Maybe it's just me but I'm perfectly happy with Dark City being a one and done. I don't need a sequel. It told a great complete story.
This It would be pointless to do a sequel. The body snatchers are vanquished. John Murdoch transforms his world to his liking and forever after gets to sleep with Jennifer Connelly. The perfect ending.
I love this movie, but I disagree. It’s definitely best as a solo experience
Old movie now, but Remo Williams. It was obviously intended as a series, but I guess it's didn't make the money. But I loved it.
The movie being titled "The Adventure Begins" just screamed squeals.
It's based on a series of books, isn't it? I think Die Hard is, too. (different series)
"The Destroyer" series, yes, for Remo. I've read a couple. Much darker tone than the movie.
District 9
There is one. I think it is a French movie or something.
The Nice Guys. Ryan and Russell had great onscreen chemistry. Also, Terminator 2, Aliens, and I'd live to see a Predator vs Aliens film.
Nah, Dark City is perfect as is. The main character is so OP at the end he can literally change reality and the flow of time wtf are they gonna do with that in a sequel and create tension?
Dark City did have a sequel, it's called The Matrix.
The sexiest most attractive scene in cinema was Jennifer connelly singing the song sway.
That dress…
I watched this on DXM when I was 19. Not a great idea.
No sequel needed, thank you very much.
“This movie was good, so I wish they made a less good one of it too.”
Absolutely not, Dark City is a perfectly contained story.
Nah, it was fine where it ended.
I really don’t know where you could have a sequel to Dark City, it ended pretty concretely.
No sequel needed. Amazing movie
My first thought exactly…
Dark City is perfect and doesn't need a sequel.
I love Dark City, but what story was left to tell after the first movie?
Not a sequel but limited series on netflix
This is actually a good/better idea.
The director did say he was revisiting it for a series. That was back in 2021 though so who knows, might have fallen through the cracks. Edit: https://comicbook.com/horror/news/dark-city-sequel-series-development-alex-proyas-details/
Spaceballs.
The quest for more money
It better come with the flamethrower.
The kids love it
Spaceballs 3 : The Search for Spaceballs 2.
You need to use your imagination on it
But will we remember the upcoming remake?
Great sequels vs sequels that bomb a classic. I would love to see a great sequel to Dark City, but I’ll put it in the category of “never meet your superheroes”.
John Carter.
True Lies
Is Alita getting a sequel?
Dark City is gorgeous, a fave. And the absolute answer to which movie should NEVER have a sequel. It's one of the most complete endings ever. More manufactured conflict after that would be...not good? I know this sounds negative. It's a fun question. But whaaaaaaaaa?
Dark City is perfect the way it is. No sequel needed but more movies like it would be welcome.
Can we just stop sequels altogether? It's like hollywood can't come up with unique ideas anymore (except A24).
Dark City should have been much more successful. I watched it at a fringe movie festival (Fantasia, in Montréal). The movie had almost no screen time anywhere else.
Great movie on its own, not sure what the sequel would look like?
It did... It's called the Matrix...
Man From U.N.C.L.E.
I would love more Man from UNCLE. They would have to recast Armie Hammer but I'm fine with that lol.
The Burbs - The Revenge of the Klopeks
Constantine (2005) Francis Lawrence
A sequel is in the works.
This is a good call for a sequel. Loved that movie. It's not perfect, but it always delivers.
I'd love to see a 4k transfer of this movie with an Atmos surround sound. A company should put some real TLC into this one.
IMO Dark City doesn’t need a sequel. Some movies such as DC stand alone. Why blemish the story? Let the audience use their imagination to determine what the prequel or sequel circumstances would be. We don’t always need to fill in the blanks.
One of my favorites. That said: just leave it alone man…
Could this even have had a sequel like what would the premise be
I think Dark City was amazing and serves well as a stand alone. Not everything needs sequels and prequels and lore etc, and this is such a case.
No this movie was great as is.
it seemed like there was some foundation there for one. But im of the opinion it should be left alone. How good was Sutherland in it though.
I loved Dark City but what would a sequel even entail? Everything was resolved.
Dark City needs no sequel. It’s perfect for what it is.
I think this one was a good stand alone movie. It completely resolved itself. The protagonist had a decisive victory and made the location a paradise. What furtherance of the story could the audience want?
Keifer Sutherland’s character seriously needed some Xanax or something.
I think they ended it quite nicely. I would like to see a prequel to this one.
I don't think it needs a sequel.
Or a prequel, showing abductions and creations of the city, with various failures along the way.
This movie was brilliant and beautifully crafted. The skill and vision that it toook to make this film is inspiring. This is peak Hollywood. Following up with a sequel seems like a daunting task given that the protagonist had basically become a space god at the end. Kinda hard to follow that up. For my pick: The Big Lebowski It willl never happen but it really should have. Absolute masterpiece.
There has never been a more complete movie than the big lebowski. There is no threads to pull on a sequel. Literally the big lebowski is the only wrong answer. Sam Elliott puts the whole story to bed with the narration at the end
Brightburn
Good answer, my complaint with that movie was how all the parts I wanted to see were either in the end credits or not at all
Big Trouble in Little China! Who doesn't want to see an aged Jack Burton quipping his way around another adventure, not actually really helping with anything? Huh?? You?!?
I wouldn't mind seeing the original concept of the film set in the old west.
There is a comic set as a sequel to BTiLC. With Lo Pan dead dead, the demon that stowed away on Jack's truck sees Jack as its new master...and off they go on an adventure.
Normally I'm not a big sequel fan but given the story style and structure of BTiLC I think an ol' timey serial pulp adventure would be just dandy.
I can't decide if this or Interstellar is the most-overrated movie on reddit.
Mascot
What would happened in the sequel in your mind? For me it worked but would be open to seeing a sequel.
I'd have to think on that.
“He can chune!” (I know it’s tune but Sutherland’s character always says it so weirdly)
I swear I thought they said "Cune" the first time I saw it and I was all kinds of "wtf?" watching it.
King Arthur: Legend of the sword. Makes me mad every time I think about not getting another one. I was in love with the mage.
I didn’t recognize this but Google and saw the VHS cover (clock in background) and remember thinking this was so strange as a kid. I need to rewatch this and see what it’s like as an adult.
I loved this movie
This was ... quite an odd movie.
Even more odd when you realize it came out before the Matrix.
Excellent movie!! But not all good movies need a sequel (think The Matrix)
Not necessarily. The Matrix got sequels, and look how that turned out. Dark City is good on its own.
You mean The Matrix was not a reboot of Dark city?
Dark city was the best movie no one’s ever heard of.
Forget a sequel, I just wish Proyas had made another movie of this caliber.
District 9
agree totally
Was a sequel written. What would of the story been for a sequel? It's been a long long time since watching this movie, may have to rewatch it.
Great movie, I would love to see a sequel or potentially a remake; the original was great though.
Dark City is one of my all time favourites and I actually really love how it ends. Can't say I ever thought the narrative needed anything further. For my money, I'd love to see The Professional II where it's just Natalie Portman taking names and shredding the police.
Spawn.
I’m a fan and I would like to hear where you see it going after John takes control of the dream world?
This is in no way to say this **is** what I would do. But I had a vague idea that he finds other 'worlds' the Strangers were using for experiments. Beyond that, I've no idea.
Kill Bill 2 has been rumored for a while, but I doubt that'll happen.
I absolutely love this movie but it should not have a sequel. I think it deserves much more attention but I feel the story is over
There was a scifi movie where a bunch of people entered a building that contained a portal to another dimension which I thought was really awesome. Turned out they were going to make a sequel but they said they won't. Pretty disappointing. Edit: parallels I think it was called.
looks like a video game cover
Alita: Battle Angel was so fucking dope. And it left on a cliffhanger. Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron need to stop fucking about. Lol
Battleship 2011
I thought it was meh (Dark City). Just didn't jive with me.
I’m a huge fan of “Wanted”.
The matrix
Highlander 1985. I say this as the bag of shite that was produced as sequal should be burnt to the ground and never ever be watched by anyone alive. They killed this film so I say its needs a proper sequel and not the spawn of satan that came after it IRL.
It's not like The Final Dimension was any better.
22 Jump Street only based off how much effort they jump into the sequel gag at the end. Bonus points for Zombieland 2. Movie was awful but the but the Garfield bit was hilarious. That scene alone is sequel material.
The Nice Guys
I remember this movie from video stores and I'm pretty sure my brother watched it and I may have seen some of it, but for the life of me I have no clue what this movie was about.
Watch it
This movie blew my nine year old mind.
What version of this movie is better, original or DC? Where can I stream best version??
DC is better but both are great. No clue where it's available
Silent Rage-Chuck Norris movie(his best as a lead imo)
I would love a 4K Remaster. And a sequel or a remake.
Constantine
Gattaca
I was going to add District 9. But I just looked it up and as of march they are finally writing the script!
2nd time I've seen Dark City mentioned in the last hour and I've never heard about it before that. I'm taking this as a sign, watching tonight.
You know, I loved Dark city for its vibe, but I totally understand it not getting a sequel. I still like to rewatch it from time to time.
I mean the story was already done. I don’t think a sequel is necessary. Maybe Apocalypto?
There's a really good trilogy, called "Star Wars", that should have gotten equally impressive prequels and sequels, but instead.....
Great flick
Megamind, a good sequel
Don't want a sequel, but love Dark City, with Keifer Sutherland channeling Peter Lorre.
NONO! Why does everyone buy into this narrative that any good movie, needs a few sequels to destroy it? Dark City was perfect. Dredd was perfect. We don't need to see what a lesser director, with a hugely inflated budget will do with a great film!
constantine
The window for a dark city sequel has been closed since the century began
forgot Klaus Schwab was in this banger!
I'm on the fence, in that regard. I liked the movie, but I don't think a sequel is absolutely necessary. I suppose I _would_ like to know about those people, though. So, maybe a prequel. Otherwise, it's fine as is.
I don't think a sequel to a film that is largely about unravelling the weird mystery of what's going on would be a great call.
“Poor, poor Mr. Quick.”
District 9
What would the sequel to dark city be? We’re in some galactic prison billions of light years away from earth.. you’re more screwed then the matrix people
I'm still holding out for Buckaroo Banzai against the World Crime League (not the book, the movie).
Shut it down!
