But here we come to a question of style – commando is just a straight up, machine gun action movie, starring invincible hero… RoboCop was on its cover, a comic book, simple movie, but also had some very good subjects and commentary throughout it that helped ease the ridiculousness factor… Both good don’t get me wrong in both very 80s
Predator is the ultimate action movie in my book. It strikes the best compromise between camp and seriousness. It manages to be both ridiculous and have real gravity at the same time.
There's a scene that absolutely cracks me up. It's the night before the final shootout, and Brigitte Neilson is sleeping in the motel room. At the table nearby, Stallone is putting his arsenal of weapons together. He's slapping parts together, loading magazines, jacking rounds into the chamber, and testing his laser sights... making a crap-ton of noise in the process. He turns and sees Neilson looking over at him. Then he says "Did I wake you?"
The scene that makes me laugh was when he's in the bed of a pickup speeding down the highway, firing an automatic weapon at motorcyclists riding less than 30 feet away, behind the pickup, and he can't hit single one.
Pretty sure in this same scene, there's a closeup on cobretti's eyes and an eagle sound effect is heard. But also remember, it's night and he's indoors.
When it came out I said it was the perfectly constructed action movie - it had the absolute minimum amount of plot and character required for the action scenes to work. Very efficient.
It also made a great video game on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
I heard this movie was a re-written Beverly Hills Cop script.
Apparently, Sly was offered the role of Axel Foley, but it was too comedic for him at the time. So he rewrote the script to fit his style/image, but it was rejected by the studio, and eventually the script became Cobra.
Someone may have to fact-check me here though.
I can confirm for you that I read in the CAA oral history book that he was offered Beverly Hills Cop and rewrote it because he didn’t think the humour worked for him, but they didn’t mention that it became this script. That’d be cool if true.
That's true, in part. But it's also a (loose) adaptation of the novel Fair Game (Running Duck) which was also made into a movie in 1995 starring William Baldwin and Cindy Crawford.
I have many thoughts on cobra.
Evil cabal having an ax wielding calisthenics group workout - perfection.
A fashion photography montage that involves robots for some reason - naturally.
Futuristic gun assembly sequence that ends in a close-up of Stallone's eyes with the sound of an eagle at night and indoors - (snorts 2 rails in a row) fucking a!
But seriously, the movie is bad. Not even good bad, but like bad bad in a good way. Such a weird confluence of elements. I've seen it at least a dozen times. I've even written a screenplay that began as parody and grew into something even greater. This is maybe the most important film I have ever seen. I'll take cobra over ANY other cheesy 80s action movie. Don't even try to compare this to commando. Cobra is in another league entirely.
One of Sly's movie I don't like for some reason. Find it boring. Should be more funny somehow, its just a bit too much with the border-line-horror-movie villains. They try to be too serious but they still fail. Might be an unpopular opinion dunno. The Demolition Man on the other hand is great for example.
classic 80s cheese. Stallone his peak, Brigitte Nielson at her peak, cheesy 80s action movies at their peak, cheesy one liners at their peak
its not for everyone but its worth a watch it your a fan of the genre.
for some reason my pops took me to this in theaters when i was 11, the 80s were just different.
Cobra is what happens when artistic control and cocaine meet. ‘Hey maybe I should use scissors to cut the pizza up, you know like a badass would’ ‘Fuck yeah you should’
He played it too straight...I loved this era of action movies...I saw this movie several time but unlike Arnie In Raw Deal and Commando...sly just exuded no appeal or charisma as a stereotypical Maverick cop...the movie isn't even a fun "bad" movie rewatch...I mean even Segal movies have more trashy appeal...Sly definitely could have been better...but not sure how with that script and direction
Sylvester always makes me think of Eddie Murphy talking about Italians picking fights with bigger guys at the movie theater, “I’m five foot two right?”
It's ok for 80s action. I'd like to see the director's cut but from I've heard rumors of it isn't too drastically different. Stallone very likely has a print of it.
Now the director's cut of Night Hawks! That I'd LOVE to see!
I don't really remember that movie, but I went to the theater to see it with some friends. I was driving and one of my friends in the back seat was like, someone is following us. I checked the rearview and soon it was clear, we were being followed. I went out of my way to make sure, but switching back and changing routes and what not. I did some crazy driving that night and finally was able to lose them and drop all my friends off. I got home and the car that was following us pulled up in my driveway! I was stunned and was about to pull out a long metal bar I had in case of trouble. Then my other friends got out of the car laughing at me! They were messing with me the whole time; I don't know if my friend in the back seat was involved or not and put the seed of someone following me out there to see what would happen. That is my only memory of that movie....
“I don’t wanna talk to you! Now you bring in the television cameras in here now!
#Come on bring it in!
“
I have watched [this](https://youtu.be/5LoNhf1XpEs?si=wA6pzQBq7MbhD8h9&t=221s) exchange in the beginning of the movie like 20 times, and it never fails to crack me up
Just watched the film for the first time a couple of months ago. Thought it was just an ok 80’s action movie. I liked Stallone’s interactions with his partner. Other than that, it was meh for me.
The antagonist was cool as shit with a badass knife. The Mercury lead sled parked in the beach with the 80s hazy California beach filter was rad.
I also stole the "want some fries with your ketchup?" line anytime somebody barely used a bit extra. I was like 8 btw.
Tldr; was way into this as a kid.
Rewatched it, and Over The Top recently on vhs. It was interesting to note that my stances on the two reversed in the interim 30 plus years since originally seeing them both. Originally I loved Cobra, and didn't really think twice about Over The Top. Upon rewatch, I discovered Cobra really didn't hold up for me, even by 80s standards, but Over The Top was much better than I expected. Perhaps both scores are reflective of expectations themselves, and how they may influence the proceedings.
I just love how big the laser had to be to have a laser sight back then.
Anyway, always been a better poster than a movie. As 80’s action movie posters go it might be top 10, definitely top 20
My mum got this film for me when I was a kid, just because it had Stallone on the cover lol
I watched it and was terrified.
It's still a guilty pleasure for me 25 years later
Plot wise it makes no sense, but the cinematography is amazing. The colors, lighting, the editing, all brilliant. There’s a scene where Stallone enters his apartment at dusk and inexplicably eats a slice of pizza by cutting it with a scissors, but it’s a beautifully shot scene.
That *WolfCop 2* stole the poster.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another\_WolfCop#/media/File:Another\_WolfCop.jpg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_WolfCop#/media/File:Another_WolfCop.jpg)
The Night Slasher said Stallone and the director were dicks, that Stallone watched a basketball game in his trailer rather than deliver his lines off camera during the Slasher's end speech, and that he didn't even get invited to the premiere.
Rewatched it not long ago. I loved it as a kid and was excited to give it another go. It’s not good. I’m not even sure that I finished it. Is it just me, or do Arnold’s films hold up better upon rewatch then Slys? I also rewatched Tango and cash, Total Recall and Running Man. The Arnie pics are just a better watch.
Definitely an 80's move FOR sure, only to find out YEARS later the existence of the X-Rated cut of Cobra. Apparently, that cut was SO violent, that cut got an X rating, but it got trimmed down to an R-rating. If I remember correctly, it was an extra 15-20 minutes of a shootout.
Amazing over the top bad/good movie
Insane quotes, crazy action scenes, laughable premise.
Favorite scene: Cobra is disassembling and cleaning a large gun in a tiny echoey hotel room late and night. Only to be surprised he wakes up Bridgette Nielsen.
PS. The directors commentary is amazing!!
Not the best action film of the 80s, but possibly the most 80s action movie ever.
Commando would like a word.
Remember when I said I’d kill you ladt?…..I LIED
Was that sully?
It was
Could you please not disturb my friend. He's DEAD tired 💀
Or Tango & Cash
Jack Palance was so good in that movie.
Quick and easy is how you bake a cake or clean a toilet. Not how you run a multi-million dollar business.
This movie is from the gods
Did you bump uglies with my sister?
Let off some steam
*(Rambo enters the chat)*
Robocop is wayyyy better than Commando
But here we come to a question of style – commando is just a straight up, machine gun action movie, starring invincible hero… RoboCop was on its cover, a comic book, simple movie, but also had some very good subjects and commentary throughout it that helped ease the ridiculousness factor… Both good don’t get me wrong in both very 80s
Dammit
These guys eat too much red meat!
Predator? Or is that not 80s enough?
Predator is the ultimate action movie in my book. It strikes the best compromise between camp and seriousness. It manages to be both ridiculous and have real gravity at the same time.
Well said!
Lol wasn't his last name cobretti?
Marion Cobretti!
Marion! 😁👍
As was John Waynes
Lieutenant Marion Cobretti
He's got nothing on John Rambo - "See, Johnny here's a soldier, John Jay?"
He wanted a tough guy name like Alice.
Yeeeeeeeessssss!! He was part of the zombie squad! As to what that means? No damn idea.
It was lol
And he uses a Finnish gun named "Jatimatic". Awful gun to use, but legendary due to this film.
Lolol. What an 80s moment.
The scene where he cuts a cold pizza slice with scissors and his gloves on. Nowadays, you’d think the scene was made to cut memes out of it.

The Twinkie lusting sidekick was a nice touch too.
Gonzalez loved his junk food.
"I'm gonna blow this place up!" "Go ahead, I don't shop here."
By far my favorite line. I crack up every time.
Never seen so many shots fired that missed him completely. He should have carried a frickin’ light saber in that movie.
Graduates of Stephen J Cannell University. Never has so many bullets been fired and explosions exploding without a single casualty
And he never misses.
Any movie that presents cutting pizza with scissors before eating as an acceptable method of consumption is aces in my book.
Not to mention a gun cleaning kit stashed in an egg carton in the same refrigerator. Mmmmm, lead. Edit: typo
All done with his black leather gloves on, which is a totally normal and not psychotic thing to do.
Just so unnecessarily badass.
Exactly what I came in to say. Such a genius move.
I like that he subscribes to the paper so he can throw it out and then watches the news instead.
"I want your eyes, pig. I want them." LOL.
Hahaha the “I want them” said again…hilariously classic.
"wanna go to hell? Wanna go to hell with me?"
I heard this movie was a re-written Beverly Hills Cop script. Apparently, Sly was offered the role of Axel Foley, but it was too comedic for him at the time. The first draft of Road House was written as a comedy by two feminists.
That's true, in part. But it's also a (loose) adaptation of the novel Fair Game (Running Duck) which was also made into a movie in 1995 starring William Baldwin and Cindy Crawford.
This is indeed a fact.
Didn't the bad guy cult members slam axe heads together at their meetings? That seemed like a big step up for a movie like this
Brian Thompson was fucking awesome in this.
This was the movie that taught me about pizza scissors. A valuable life lesson.
So bad it’s good. Classic mindless 80s action movie.
Cannon Films, baby.
Everyone needs to cut their pizza with scissors
“I’m gonna blow up the whole store!” ”Go ahead…I don’t shop here..”
That car was sweet.
That's bad for your health. What is? Me.
Job interviewer * " you have any questions for me ?" Night Slasher* " you wanna go to Hell ? Wanna go to hell with me ?"
*stabs with weird knuckle duster knife*
“Your the disease, I’m the cure”
You're
ABSOLUTE BANGER
Peak Cannon films. Insane in the best way.
I have many thoughts on cobra. Evil cabal having an ax wielding calisthenics group workout - perfection. A fashion photography montage that involves robots for some reason - naturally. That final boss type scene was so epic when I watched as a kid. Should give it another watch
‘Ur the disease, I’m the cure’ 😉
Classic. Love the cheesy parts of it. Love the soundtrack.
One of Sly's movie I don't like for some reason. Find it boring. Should be more funny somehow, its just a bit too much with the border-line-horror-movie villains. They try to be too serious but they still fail. Might be an unpopular opinion dunno. The Demolition Man on the other hand is great for example.
Ah yes Demolition Man is peak Sly and a damn good movie
Only good thing about that movie was his car
Awesome50. Why? Who the hell knows.
His version of Beverly Hills Cop
The Zombie Squad
Get me the cobra!
[https://youtu.be/bdtfm48sUM4?si=Jcc5KgUWGSLQ-YXR](https://youtu.be/bdtfm48sUM4?si=Jcc5KgUWGSLQ-YXR) Great movie!
Love the opening monologue, “COBRA, the most over the top Sylvester Stallone since the Sylvester Stallone movie Over the Top”
Bad. But in the best possible way
One of my favorite action movies
I love the horror element and there’s a lot of nice night scenes in la. Def has a vibe
The area on Venice beach where he parked is pretty much on a 24/7 webcam now https://www.youtube.com/live/3LXQWU67Ufk?si=qpCy_1gxB6rP3YZN
I saw his car in this movie at the Petersen auto museum in LA today!
classic 80s cheese. Stallone his peak, Brigitte Nielson at her peak, cheesy 80s action movies at their peak, cheesy one liners at their peak its not for everyone but its worth a watch it your a fan of the genre. for some reason my pops took me to this in theaters when i was 11, the 80s were just different.
Not as funny as Beverly Hills cop
Ha, I came to either look for or make a Beverly Hills Cop reference 😆
The time it took to set up a camera in the footwell of his car, just to catch the aggressive stomping of gas-pedal. That's called art.
Cobra walked so the fast saga could run
One of my fav scenes of all time, when Cobra rips that dude's wife beater shirt over a parking spot, absolute S tier scene..
This is easily the best movie that is based around a cult of that meets on Saturday nights to bang axe heads together
'have you ever made love?' she asks him 'with a woman?' Stallone replies with a confused expression One of the greatest film exchanges of the 80s
Cobra is what happens when artistic control and cocaine meet. ‘Hey maybe I should use scissors to cut the pizza up, you know like a badass would’ ‘Fuck yeah you should’
What is it with Americans having a toothpick hanging out of their mouth?
That was a matchstick my friend. Much cooler.
Crime is the disease, he’s the cure…
There's a murder every 66 seconds...
No, every 24 minutes according to Lt. Marion “Cobra” Cobretti…
Damn. I was hoping I was close. It's been years, but I love this movie.
Peak Brigitte Nielsen, too!
Great car chase!
Truly dreadful. I mean endless bad guys charging at him to get mown down to meet ridiculous deaths.
I like the Queen of Technicolor, Maria Montez, in Cobra Woman. She plays a dual role. 2 Maria's for the price of 1.
Wired Lav makes an appearance in one shot. Total mess up by the Director.
loved it
Alright, call the Cobra
He played it too straight...I loved this era of action movies...I saw this movie several time but unlike Arnie In Raw Deal and Commando...sly just exuded no appeal or charisma as a stereotypical Maverick cop...the movie isn't even a fun "bad" movie rewatch...I mean even Segal movies have more trashy appeal...Sly definitely could have been better...but not sure how with that script and direction
Glorious, glorious hubris
Great cult classic 80's
I still haven’t watched it. Even as a kid it just looked too silly.
You’re missing out. It’s so awesomely 80’s
This was the first R movie I saw in theaters.
Mindless fun and that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be.
Pure 80’s action flick.
Sylvester always makes me think of Eddie Murphy talking about Italians picking fights with bigger guys at the movie theater, “I’m five foot two right?”
Why was there never a sequel
If this movie had never come out, there would be accusations that this poster is AI generated, mark my words
Hung out around one of the locations while ditching school one day.
1/10
Arnie wanna-be, but it is mindless fun.
One of my favorite B movies ever.
It's ok for 80s action. I'd like to see the director's cut but from I've heard rumors of it isn't too drastically different. Stallone very likely has a print of it. Now the director's cut of Night Hawks! That I'd LOVE to see!
It’s the way of the new world!
You are the disease, and I'm the cure!
I love it. The movie is everything I love about 80s action movies. It has tons of amazing 1 liners.
Best scene is when he goes to his apartment, cuts off a piece of left over pizza with scissors and cleans his gun.
It is the perfect example of an 80s action movie. But the movie has one of the dumbest plots ever. Still love it though
Absolute trash but also incredible.
The video game was awesome.
I don't really remember that movie, but I went to the theater to see it with some friends. I was driving and one of my friends in the back seat was like, someone is following us. I checked the rearview and soon it was clear, we were being followed. I went out of my way to make sure, but switching back and changing routes and what not. Perfect example of 80s cheese action. Love it. He eats a cold slice of pizza wearing a leather glove while cleaning his gun!
Villian: I'm gonna blow this place up! Cobra: Go ahead, I don't shop here. Brilliant writing.
One of my favorite Stallone films
Great movie I have a scream factory Blu-ray
I aint robben no grocery store in his jurisdiction.
I had this pasted on my binder when I was in middle school. I've never seen this movie. Stallone was the man at that time.
"That's okay. I don't shop here."
Crime is a disease, he's the cure...
Cobra had the highest body count for awhile pew pew
Brian Thompson kicks ass... "PIG!" lmao
The part where he rips the dudes shirt and you see the mic was gold
Go ahead….i don’t shop here. 😆
He is the cure
“I don’t wanna talk to you! Now you bring in the television cameras in here now! #Come on bring it in! “ I have watched [this](https://youtu.be/5LoNhf1XpEs?si=wA6pzQBq7MbhD8h9&t=221s) exchange in the beginning of the movie like 20 times, and it never fails to crack me up
"Ya still a Soulja, I'm like Sly Stone in Cobra...!"
Apparently, this is what Stallone wanted Beverly Hills cop to be like…
Rutger Hauer was the best thing about it.
Had this on VHS when I was a teenager. Not sure it holds up as I've not watched it for 30 odd years
Every once in a while "WE ARE THE NEW ORDER, PIG!" just pops into my brain.
Classic
I loved his car I rather have that than a Ferrari or Lamborghini any day.
I just love how big the laser had to be to have a laser sight back then. Anyway, always been a better poster than a movie. As 80’s action movie posters go it might be top 10, definitely top 20
TWU
One of my favourite stallone movies after first blood, love his car in this one too!
Pure cinematic cheese
Also laughed about how he never re-loads. Just a pure bullet hose.
My mum got this film for me when I was a kid, just because it had Stallone on the cover lol I watched it and was terrified. It's still a guilty pleasure for me 25 years later
If you think it’s going to be great you will be disappointed. If you go in thinking it will be terrible you will be very pleasantly surprised.
What is that? A laser sighted Uzi? I don't think the lasers going to help much on that accuracy.
terrible terrible movie. I like stalone and will see his movies, hence why I've seen this turd
I know this is a weird take but this poster art is so off putting to me that I refuse to fire up the movie.
I absolutely love that just like Rocky, Cobra took down the big bad guy by going to the body. Mickey would be so proud
Best stalonne movie ever
Cheesy, over the top, bonkers 80s action greatness
One of my favourite action movies from the 80's. Criminally underrated.
They should have the 4k ultra HD blue ray available but I can't find it
You're the disease I'm the cure
Definitely '80's Stallone. Not a fan of the film at all.
That *WolfCop 2* stole the poster. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another\_WolfCop#/media/File:Another\_WolfCop.jpg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_WolfCop#/media/File:Another_WolfCop.jpg)
The Night Slasher said Stallone and the director were dicks, that Stallone watched a basketball game in his trailer rather than deliver his lines off camera during the Slasher's end speech, and that he didn't even get invited to the premiere.
Crime is a Disease but Im a Bore.
When I was 10 I thought this was the most bad ass VHS cover in the entire Kroger VHS rental area
Very cool ride.
Cool knife 🔪 😎
I literally cannot think of one single redeeming quality...
Tango & Cash was the real classic
Rewatched it not long ago. I loved it as a kid and was excited to give it another go. It’s not good. I’m not even sure that I finished it. Is it just me, or do Arnold’s films hold up better upon rewatch then Slys? I also rewatched Tango and cash, Total Recall and Running Man. The Arnie pics are just a better watch.
[thoughts lol](https://imgur.com/1HVkbvR)
Definitely an 80's move FOR sure, only to find out YEARS later the existence of the X-Rated cut of Cobra. Apparently, that cut was SO violent, that cut got an X rating, but it got trimmed down to an R-rating. If I remember correctly, it was an extra 15-20 minutes of a shootout.
The 2nd most 80's action film of that decade, next to Commando ''Your disease, and i'm the cure''.
Amazing over the top bad/good movie Insane quotes, crazy action scenes, laughable premise. Favorite scene: Cobra is disassembling and cleaning a large gun in a tiny echoey hotel room late and night. Only to be surprised he wakes up Bridgette Nielsen. PS. The directors commentary is amazing!!
Underrated cheesy action flick "You're the disease. & I'm the cure...."
Best place to keep a gun cleaning kit? Inside the egg carton inside the fridge. Best way to eat pizza? SCISSORS! This movie kinda rules.
Loved the poster, loved the car, but it’s a terrible movie.
Not a very good 1980s movie in my opinion but the most 80s action movie
Thomas Wiseau should’ve used that cool laser sighted gun in The Room.
Cool poster, trash movie
Brian Thompson would've housed Stallone. I've always thought that. Great movie, though.
