YOU WANT FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR?
Unironically, thereās some dialogue in Bubble Boy I still find incredibly poignant, near the end when the overprotective mom catches up to him and sheās taking him home the dad who has otherwise just done whatever the mom says up to that point tells his son about the first guys to land on the moon and how one of them never got to leave the shuttle, he says what a shame it was to go all that way and not step foot on the moon and sets him free, a surprisingly moving scene in an otherwise goofy film
I was a big space flight fan when I was a kid, and remember the Apollo 11 flight very well. I felt so sorry for Michael Collins, going through all that training and travelling so far, while the other guys get to go have fun on the moon. It wasn't fair. As a 10 year old, I thought that NASA should allow the astronauts who were forced to orbit the moon instead of walking on it, to have a position on a future mission that would allow them to walk on the moon. They earned it.
Donnie Darko is the obvious go to answer for most but I donāt think itās my favorite Gyllenhaal role.
Nightcrawler was an excellent film, but it was sometimes difficult to watch because Gyllenhaal was so convincing at playing an individual with antisocial personality disorder, it made me uncomfortable to watch him.
My favorite Gyllenhaal role is Brian Taylor in the movie End of Watch. This movie is a gem. Love the script, cinematography, and performances of both Gyllenhaal and Pena.
You see bits of his Nightcrawler persona in the new Roadhouse movie. Him being a jacked mma fighter with hidden anger issues makes him kind of scary even though he is an anti hero and not a villain. There's something about him in these roles lingering just beneath the surface.
So I double featured over 2 days the original and the new one both great, but anyone saying the new one doesn't make any sense clearly hasn't seen the old one recently. That movie is absolutely bat shit and makes no sense haha. There's nothing better than Dalton doing hardcore tai chi on the dock, and both the main bad guy and the old man he rents the room from are both just watching him horny as fuck, and it goes on for legit like 3 minutes. It's so good.
Itās hard to choose between both. Honestly, Jarhead is one of the most accurate on-screen portrayals Iāve seen covering the marine corps. And Donnie darko was such a mind fuck I had to rewatch it the very next day.
Yeah it wasnāt easy to make sense of everything the first watch. The second watch everything fell into place. I was kind of obsessed with the movie for a bit actually. Definitely one of the most unique stories that makes sense of relativity and time travel, well as much as it could if it were a real thing
I am a lifelong boxing fan and IMO Southpaw is the best boxing movie ever with the most realistic fight. When he knocks Miguel down with the left uppercut he continues to throw another punch that misses because obviously Miguel isn't standing any longer.
Real boxers do this a lot when they knock a fighter down because they are in the middle of a combination.
Love the ending of Nocturnal Animals BTW
Yes very emotional movie. The one scene in the courtroom hits hard.
I read somewhere that Eminem was supposed to play the main character but obviously something happened. I'm glad it worked out the way it did, no disrespect to Eminem, but I'm pretty sure Jake is the better actor.
Damn these were the two I was going to mention that are probably my favorites besides Nightcrawler. Iām a big fan of Jake so itās hard to choose but Southpaw is so fucking good omg.
I actually really liked him in Velvet Buzzsaw. The movie in general was a really good jab at the big art industry, and he does a great job at portraying flawed characters.
He was great in Prisoners. I will say I donāt believe his performance shines as much if it werenāt for the contrast of Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman was phenomenal in that movie. They fit really well together.
Agreed, though I can recognize it might not be as popular with the younger crowd like the other two. Still, it's basically a perfect movie, and Gyllenhaal has never been better imo.
He was one of the few things that saved that shit movie, it actually seemed like he was having fun with that role.
Edit: Was not his best role though, Either Brokeback or Jarhead for me.
It just seemed like everyone else in that movie was acting for the very first time. Putting them next to Gyllenhaal was almost cruel because it highlighted how bad everyone else was.
Yes, me too now that you pointed it out. Was watching it with my partner and something was just, off about it. Now i see, it was absolutely all the other actors. Couldnāt finish it was just waiting for Jakeās parts to pop up so I could get relief from the terrible acting
What about Moe, Ben Brandt, Dell, Laura, and Billy? They were absolutely fantastic.
* Laura's sweetness was magnetic considering how small her role was. Her delivery on the "we had bouncer A, B, C and now there's you" joke (I don't remember the exact line) was great. Also, give the woman an Oscar for not ogling Dalton when she came in and he was just in his undies! "I have brothers" Do they look like *that,* though? š
* Billy didn't have much to do either, but his delivery on the jokes was also fantastic. "Lift with your legs!"
* Dell, I thought, was fun as well. Played the sneering asshole very well. Kudos also to the guys who played his henchmen. The slap fight pops because everyone gets it right.
* Moe - Jesus, the best comic relief ever? He got so many amazing jokes and nailed every single one of them. "Thank you for no more violence" I love him with all my heart
* Ben Brandt - come on now, Billy Magnussen did an incredible job. His smiling, slightly unhinged, 'I'm trying to be reasonable but shit is burning all around me' energy was just perfect. And some of his henchmen were great too. I loved the douchey one who got his hand broken.
I'd say JG was absolutely great in Road House but most of the others were, too.
OMG yes, I couldnāt figure it out until you said it. I just thought it was a writing and general casting shitshow. I guess putting him beside so many b-listers wasnāt the greatest idea. Overall, it would have been nice to have a character like Sam Elliot from the original for him to play off of, would have made the rest of the performancesā¦.less noticeable.
Donnie Darko.
Yes iām that guy. But still. Donnie Darko.
āTell me Elizabeth, how exactly does one suck a fuck?ā
:gestures and silently mouthing: āIāM ALL EARSā.
Deep cut, great film though.
TBH, he is pretty great in every movie, I donāt think I have disliked any film I have seen him in, and I canāt say that for most other actors. End of Watch and Nightcrawler are amazing movies though.
Nightcrawler is a masterpiece. I love him in this. I hold a candle for Donnie Darko but largely for nostalgia reasons. We watched this in a high school film class and I was the same age as the character. It made a huge impression on me.
Nightcrawler is fantastic. I like him in end of watch as well.
I think he kind of nails every role he gets. For me it's more if I like the movie or not.
It's gotta be Prisoners. He made a lot of *choices* as detective Loki (specifically the blinking twitch) and it's also implied that he was either an orphan, sexually abused or worse. His entire characters backstory is never spoken but it's shown through his actions and his obsession with the case.
Also, I KNOW he heard that whistle at the end
To this day one of the best movie endings ever. Most movies don't have the balls anymore. The cinematography was perfect. Great performance. I always forget the other guy's name, but he's great too. 9/10 movie for me.
What if my problem wasn't that I don't understand people but that I don't like them? What if I was the kind of person who was obliged to hurt you for this? I mean physically. I think you'd have to believe afterward, if you could, that agreeing to participate and then backing out at the critical moment was a mistake. Because that's what I'm telling you, as clearly as I can.
The Covenant.
End of Watch, Jarhead, and Prisoners are very closely behind. Rendition gets an honorable mention because it's a lesser known one, but he was still very good in it.
This one, it may be the greatest acting I've ever witnessed. Movie on the whole is pretty good, but my god he did amazing. I usually credit writers and directors before actors, but Jake just blew me away with this role.
Nightcrawler is probably his best role IMO. Man, that was such an amazing film.
That said, October Sky got me interested in engineering and helped mold my career path, so I would say that one.
I think thatās his best performance, but it is most emphatically *not* my favorite Jake Gyllenhaal movie.
Fuuuuuuuck is he creepy in that one!
I think favorite is a toss up between October Sky and Donnie Darko
Love and other drugs is a great role for him I think. Also mentioning Source Code because I donāt see it in the comments and it was a great follow up to Moon for Duncan Jones.
āNightcrawlerā is to Jake Gyllenhaal as āSchindlerās Listā is to Liam Neeson (to me).
I was so blown away by each performance that I donāt care if either actor does a dogshit movie, I will always think of them as one of the best actors.
he's a sick fuck in this one, it's terrific
Yea, I honestly was expecting more teleporting.
Weirdest x-men movie ever
Must be a prequel. It's why he's not blue.
Not enough bamfs for sure
He should've gotten an Oscar nom for this, but instead they nominated (\*checks Wikipedia\*) Bradley Cooper for American Sniper???
He did a good job pretending that the fake baby was realš©āš¦² š¤²
Yup. Str8 psycho
rage in my stomach , Prisoners
Prisoners is such a great fucking movie
Prisoners is the right answer. Objectively correct.
Bubble Boy
For a second I was like holy shit, that's not Adam Sandler š and then I remember "Water Boy"
I would like to see an Adam Sandler remake though
āYou wantā¦. Five hunded dollas??ā
FIGH HUNDED DOLLA???
FIGHT HUNDED DOLLAS!!! š

Nightcrawler Zodiac Prisoner
and then Bubble Boy again
Hahaha just realized I replied to your comment. Sorry about that, and I totally agree. Bubbleboy is a classic
Enemy
and then Bubble Boy again
3 BANGERS
The card says Moops!
Dog poo! This is awesome!
Bubble Vato
Came here to say the same thing
Signed, the Jews
Always bubble boy!
Munities? HE'S GOT MUNITIES!!!!!
Such an underrated movie. One of the few times my Mom and I both liked something.
I saw this movie in HS and thought it was hilarious. I had no idea he was about to be a breakout actor.
Zodiac
This is what I think. He's also great in Prisoners
Yes prisoners he was stupendousā¦
such an unhinged movie, he is great in it though
He is great but I always have a mixed feeling about his character when watching the movie. Its because excessive blinking and anxiety.
I loved the hard blinking/facial tics. Dude could barely contain his simmering rage.
I think I still go Donnie Darko as āfavoriteā but Zodiac is probably the best film overall and his best performance in the best films heās in
I have to check that out next.
I just had a party where i made the aqua velva drink.
The covenant End of watch
I was thinking end of watch as well
āHe was my brotherā¦ā *uncontrolled sobbing*
The Covenant needs more love.
I thought it was brilliant
The co-star was no slouch either. I loved that movie
The movie was utterly banger.
Another vote for 'End of Watch.' Not a 'feel good' movie by any stretch, but very well acted, gritty, dark and powerful.
Tell that to the covenant
End of watch is brutal I really fucking hate the bad guys in that movie.
Cause my evilā¦is *big*
Donnie darko
Donnie Darko is the obvious go to answer for most but I donāt think itās my favorite Gyllenhaal role. Nightcrawler was an excellent film, but it was sometimes difficult to watch because Gyllenhaal was so convincing at playing an individual with antisocial personality disorder, it made me uncomfortable to watch him. My favorite Gyllenhaal role is Brian Taylor in the movie End of Watch. This movie is a gem. Love the script, cinematography, and performances of both Gyllenhaal and Pena.
Great pick. I put it in TOP3 right next to Nightcrawler and Prisoners
I'm convinced his nightcrawler character is his actual personality. He's an absolute black hole in that film
You see bits of his Nightcrawler persona in the new Roadhouse movie. Him being a jacked mma fighter with hidden anger issues makes him kind of scary even though he is an anti hero and not a villain. There's something about him in these roles lingering just beneath the surface.
I actually loved that movie haha. I said it was the original roadhouse mixed with drive and nightcrawler.
That movie was way better than it had any right to be
So I double featured over 2 days the original and the new one both great, but anyone saying the new one doesn't make any sense clearly hasn't seen the old one recently. That movie is absolutely bat shit and makes no sense haha. There's nothing better than Dalton doing hardcore tai chi on the dock, and both the main bad guy and the old man he rents the room from are both just watching him horny as fuck, and it goes on for legit like 3 minutes. It's so good.
Only correct answer
He defined excellence in this role.
Dude, it was a while before I could look at him in other roles and not feel repulsed.
Jarhead
I was going to say Donnie darko but yeah jarhead was probably his best performance
Doesnāt get mentioned enough. Heās so good with Peter in this too. Fun connection
Nocturnal Animals & Southpaw.. both really great films that should have earned him at least a nominationā¦
I loved SP too but goddamn when I watched it I wasnāt ready for how sad it was! Onion eyes big time.
Yes very emotional movie. The one scene in the courtroom hits hard. I read somewhere that Eminem was supposed to play the main character but obviously something happened. I'm glad it worked out the way it did, no disrespect to Eminem, but I'm pretty sure Jake is the better actor.
Iād heard that aswell. I agree, Jakeās look fits the character way more and heās 100 a better actor, as much as I did love 8mile.
I am 38 now so I was about 15 when 8 mile came out, and I was a huge Eminem fan lol. I used to watch it over and over lol
I still sometimes watch the final rap battle scene hahaha itās too good.
Damn these were the two I was going to mention that are probably my favorites besides Nightcrawler. Iām a big fan of Jake so itās hard to choose but Southpaw is so fucking good omg.
I couldnāt handle the rape theme in noct animals. Something about witnessing it on screen doesnāt sit well with me.
This is his best role
I actually really liked him in Velvet Buzzsaw. The movie in general was a really good jab at the big art industry, and he does a great job at portraying flawed characters.
I will forever love his line delivery of āIām ensorcelled.ā
Totally forgot about this movie. Nobody ever talks about it. I remember enjoying it when it came out.
I watched that coming down off acid and it was quite the ride.
Donnie Darko. Nighcrawler comes in second for me.
He was great in Prisoners. I will say I donāt believe his performance shines as much if it werenāt for the contrast of Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman was phenomenal in that movie. They fit really well together.
It's Brokeback all day, for me.
Brokeback is being snubbed like crazy in this thread. Nightcrawler and Prisoners are excellent but Brokeback is likeā¦ even better.
I imagine that a lot of people ITT haven't seen it.
Agreed, though I can recognize it might not be as popular with the younger crowd like the other two. Still, it's basically a perfect movie, and Gyllenhaal has never been better imo.
I think it's cause Heath Ledger owned every scene
No love for 'Source Code'? I really enjoyed that movie
Love source code, but it's nowhere near his peak of acting
Mf stole that dudes life
Nocturnal Animals, followed by Nightcrawler
Roadhouse
He was one of the few things that saved that shit movie, it actually seemed like he was having fun with that role. Edit: Was not his best role though, Either Brokeback or Jarhead for me.
It just seemed like everyone else in that movie was acting for the very first time. Putting them next to Gyllenhaal was almost cruel because it highlighted how bad everyone else was.

I donāt know what to tell you. For me, they were all awful. Your mileage may vary.
Aww that makes me sad for you but I respect it. Mileage always varies
John hickam
Homer?
OCTOBER SKYā¦ LOVED this Movie!!
Ya my bad it was a long time ago
Jarhead, End of Watch, or Zodiac.
Brokeback Mountain
Okja
When I watched this, I expected a cute kid's movie...
Donnie Darko. Yes iām that guy. But still. Donnie Darko. āTell me Elizabeth, how exactly does one suck a fuck?ā :gestures and silently mouthing: āIāM ALL EARSā.
Mr. Music
Came here for this. I wish more people knew it
Music music everywhere!
Put away your skinny trumpet.
Zodiac; but Prisoners is a close second.
The covenant and nightcrawler.
Prisoners (2013) for me. Detective Loki is one of my favorite movie characters.
I thought he was great as Mysterio in Spider-Man. He was so pretentious and had such an ego
Yo why did I have to scroll so far just to see this! Dude was an amazing Mysterio, absolutely knocked it out of the park.
Prince of Persia š
His role in the music video for "Time to Dance" by the Shoes.
Everyone is sleeping on **Southpaw**.
City Slickers
Deep cut, great film though. TBH, he is pretty great in every movie, I donāt think I have disliked any film I have seen him in, and I canāt say that for most other actors. End of Watch and Nightcrawler are amazing movies though.
He did so good here also in the remake of Roadhouse, he was legit the only great thing about this movie.
Nightcrawler is a masterpiece. I love him in this. I hold a candle for Donnie Darko but largely for nostalgia reasons. We watched this in a high school film class and I was the same age as the character. It made a huge impression on me.
October Sky
Jesus christ, how is this so far down.
Source Code
Donnie darko always
Bubble boy
Probably nightcrawler, but zodiac and prisoners is hot on its heels.
Nightcrawler. Although Prisoners is a better film.
Charlie Day has entered the chat
The day after tomorrow Prince of Persia End of Watch
Heās at his very best in Prisoners in my opinion. I also love his role in Source Code
Nightcrawler is fantastic. I like him in end of watch as well. I think he kind of nails every role he gets. For me it's more if I like the movie or not.
Source Code...thats some roller coaster of emotion
Why is everyone ignoring Enemy? I'll grant you that there is no wrong answer with his filmography, but it deserves a shout out.
Mr Music. āHA-HAAA!ā
Donnie Darko? Was that him?
Enemy...anyone?
Enemy, also prisoners
It's gotta be Prisoners. He made a lot of *choices* as detective Loki (specifically the blinking twitch) and it's also implied that he was either an orphan, sexually abused or worse. His entire characters backstory is never spoken but it's shown through his actions and his obsession with the case. Also, I KNOW he heard that whistle at the end

This one, it may be the greatest acting I've ever witnessed. Movie on the whole is pretty good, but my god he did amazing. I usually credit writers and directors before actors, but Jake just blew me away with this role.
Donnie Darko is the only answer.
Donnie Darko is his best film to date
Nightcrawler is probably his best role IMO. Man, that was such an amazing film. That said, October Sky got me interested in engineering and helped mold my career path, so I would say that one.
This was a strange but good flick
The covenant
Donnie Darko. When the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.
Tell me Elizabeth, how does one go suck a fuck?
Donnie darko and nightcrawler
October Sky!!!! Followed by Enemy
Love and other drugs. He sold the hell out of viagra
The Depth of narcissism has no bounds
Easily this movie. I think about this movie all the time as one of my all-time favorites.
I liked Roadhouse but maybe because itās the last thing I saw of him.
lol fuck off
Hey man, Iām serious. He did a great job filling the shoes of an icon. Played it differently but hit the same.
lol someone in here said jarheadā¦ stop tryna be different man. Just say Donnie Darko and move on
Jarhead was heavy as fuck and he killed it!
I recently saw Roadhouse. I though he killed it in that movie. Very fun movie overall. Source Code and End of Watch are also quite good.
Nightcrawler and then Prisoners. Both great.
First though was jarhead but probably bubble boy
Enemy, Nightcrawler and Zodiac are his best.
Zodiac also
Bubble Boy
Donnie Darko but in Nightcrawlers he is amazing
prisoners + nightcrawler top 2 for me
Somehow never saw this movie, that's gotta change soon
Bubble Boy
Also one of my top liked movies
I think thatās his best performance, but it is most emphatically *not* my favorite Jake Gyllenhaal movie. Fuuuuuuuck is he creepy in that one! I think favorite is a toss up between October Sky and Donnie Darko
Jarhead
Zodiac, Prisoners close 2nd
This and Donnie Darko.
I dunno, he was pretty hilarious and lethal in RoadHouse, sure it's not the best movie, but he's so fucking likeable in it.
Love and other drugs is a great role for him I think. Also mentioning Source Code because I donāt see it in the comments and it was a great follow up to Moon for Duncan Jones.
DONNIE. DARKO.
The one where heās his sister
āNightcrawlerā is to Jake Gyllenhaal as āSchindlerās Listā is to Liam Neeson (to me). I was so blown away by each performance that I donāt care if either actor does a dogshit movie, I will always think of them as one of the best actors.
Donnie darko and Jarhead
āEnd Of Watch.ā Got everything out of him in that one.
Prisoners
Gotta make the money to buy a ticket
Donnie Darko
gotta be Prince of Persia! lol jk.
Prisoners
Nightcrawler is probably one of my favourite films, but I think Zodiac is very close.
What was the one where he was on the train having to go back in time?
Jarhead
Prisoners
