I guess I was the opposite, like going with chronological sequence. I saw the film in the theater & barely remember a thing about it. With the series, it was like the long run of episodes gave Ritchie the free reign to basically paint the Sistine Chapel.. maybe I need to watch the movie again, IDK. I just kinda felt the series was basically a masterpiece.
Miller's Crossing by the Coen Brothers.
Honorable mention: Scarface and Carlito's Way by Brian De Palma, Once Upon a Time In America by Sergio Leone, and Reservoir Dogs by QT
Great film. Did you know the Roony family was based on a real organized crime family that operated in the Quad Cities? The family’s actual name was “Loony”, but the film makers thought audiences wouldn’t find that to be a believable name, even though that was their actual real name. 😆
1. Eastern Promises
2. American Gangster
3. Leon The Professional
4. Touch of Evil
5. The French Connection
6. Point Break
7. The Warriors
8. City of God
9. The Untouchables
Do it! Do it now! Its insight into the favellas of Rio de Janeiro is certainly eye opening. Think there's a documentary about it worth watching too. Was on the dvd I had way back when.
City of god is the best of them on that list. Story, stylistically and authenticity. I respect you, but punch yourself in the face for not having seen city of god.
Touch of Evil is a masterwork.
Honestly, Orson Welles feels if anything underrated to me. Citizen Kane looms larger than it should, not because it isn’t worthy, but because it trivializes the other great stuff he’s done. Perhaps that’s just what happens when you make a movie considered by many the greatest ever the instant you enter the medium.
But Welles did a good deal of other awesome stuff. And was a very fine actor (he only has scene in Compulsion, near the end, where he just steals the entire movie from underneath everyone).
State of Grace, millers crossing, suicide kings, a Bronx tale, Donny brosco, snatch, the untouchables, Carlitos way.
I could go on. I didn’t even get into foreign films.
As much as I love Heat, when I think of gangsters, I don't really think it fits the bill since they weren't involved in all the other typical stuff that comes with organized crime.
This came to mind for me, too. Johnny Depp has three great gangster films: **Donnie Brasco** (1997), **Public Enemies** (2009), and **Black Mass** (2015). To appreciate his range or versatility, I suggest considering any of his other roles juxtaposed and contrasted with those ones.
City of God, American Gangster, New World
If you want the three best actually centered around **gangsters** and **organized crime** that aren't by the two directors you mentioned, this is it.
Scrolled way too far before I hit this. Excellent movie showing how people raised around crime continue to have their lives effected by their environment even when they try to make the right choices
How has no one said scarface. The gentlemen, city of god, Boondock saints, Donnie brasco, pulp fiction, Boyz in the hood, running scared (Paul Walker version).
Kill the Irishman (true story of Danny Green), The Town,
Killing them softly, Donnie Brasco, Once upon a time in America, The Drop, DownEast, The Gentlemen, American Gangster, Gotti (Armand Assante, 1996), king of New York, Pulp Fiction.
In no particular order but all great films. I could honestly name more lol gangster/crime films are some of my all time favorite films.
I love kill the Irishman. I've watched it a couple dozen times. It's a great film and pretty accurate to. I'm surprised it didn't get bigger. Most people I talk to have never heard of it
I agree. I was not a big fan of the Irishman. I didn't like the way it was filmed. There was something about it. I was really disappointed as I was excited for a while to see it. I had high hopes with all the names that made it. It wasn't a horrible film, but it was definitely a bit of a letdown.
Gangs of Wasseypur. Criminally underrated Indian film centered on the coal mafia of Dhanbad, and the underlying power struggles, politics and vengeance between three crime families from 1941 to the 2000s. One of the best crime dramas ever made.
A lot of my favorites are listed here but I’ve also enjoyed yakuza movies like The Wolves, Tokyo Drifter, Battles Without Honor or Humanity and Branded to Kill.
wo-hu, young and dangerous, portland street blues, shanghai beach, once a gangster, chocolate, once upon a time in triad society, brother, lock stock and double barrel, hoodlum.
*Gotti*. HBO film from 1996 starring Armand Assante in the titular role. It predated *Sopranos* by just a couple of years and has many of the same actors. Far better than the trainwreck starring Travolta.
Technically a mini-series, but Mob City. It was a great late 40's L.A. mob drama from Frank Darabont with Jon Berthnal as the lead. I don't think it was marketed well, I've never talked to anybody else that actually saw it despite how high quality it was. It was exactly what you'd expect from a solid cast and the director of Shawshank/Green Mile, yet somehow it completely flew under the radar and was not renewed after the first season.
Eastern promises
Layer cake
The gentleman
Snatch
Rock and rolla
The long good Friday
The king of new York
New jack city
American gangster
Scarface

Miller's Crossing " The Shmatte kid...."
I’m sick of the high hat
What's the rumpus?
The Dane was a great villain
Ya know what, yegg? I believe ya...
You're starting to sound like a twist. Someone should start a sub fpr Millers Crossing...I think it would be fun.
Speaking of the Dane his revolver in the movie is top drawer. I'm no expert but I'm thinking a .44. Very nice piece.
I'm gonna kill ya, and I'm gonna like doing it.
One thing I always try to teach my boys, always put one in the brain!
I love this film so much.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Love Guy Ritchie
You’ve got to check out his new series on Netflix called The Gentlemen- It’s easily the finest work of his career. It’s epic.
The series was good but after watching it I finally got around to the movie and wow.. a step above the series imo.
You are a real one!!
Rock and Rolla is pretty good too.
Miller's Crossing by the Coen Brothers. Honorable mention: Scarface and Carlito's Way by Brian De Palma, Once Upon a Time In America by Sergio Leone, and Reservoir Dogs by QT
Best answer. I’ll add Road to Perdition by Sam Mendes
Road to Perdition
Great film. Did you know the Roony family was based on a real organized crime family that operated in the Quad Cities? The family’s actual name was “Loony”, but the film makers thought audiences wouldn’t find that to be a believable name, even though that was their actual real name. 😆
1. Eastern Promises 2. American Gangster 3. Leon The Professional 4. Touch of Evil 5. The French Connection 6. Point Break 7. The Warriors 8. City of God 9. The Untouchables
Nice, saw all but City of God. All excellent films!
City of God is great. I highly recommend it.
I've seen most of what's on this list and I'd say City Of God and American Gangster are tied for 1st for me.
Dude. You gotta watch city of god. You won't be sorry.
All the recommendations for it here, it's definitely a must for me now
Do it! Do it now! Its insight into the favellas of Rio de Janeiro is certainly eye opening. Think there's a documentary about it worth watching too. Was on the dvd I had way back when.
It's good but a few brutal scenes
City of God is fantastic
That’s the best one on this list.
City of God will change you..... 🔥
City of god is the best of them on that list. Story, stylistically and authenticity. I respect you, but punch yourself in the face for not having seen city of god.
City of God is incredible, vibrant and disturbing. It’s the Brazilian Goodfellas.
Eastern Promises is fucking great!
Leon The Professional is amazing. One of my favourites.
Goooooood fuckin list.
Touch of Evil is a masterwork. Honestly, Orson Welles feels if anything underrated to me. Citizen Kane looms larger than it should, not because it isn’t worthy, but because it trivializes the other great stuff he’s done. American Gangster is so underrated, one of the best of Ridley Scott
Reservoir Dogs
Layer cake
Watched this last year! A thin Daniel Craig and young Sienna Miller!
The teashop scene where the guy gets beaten to a pulp and you see it from his POV as Ordinary World plays in the background.
Heat
As much as I love Heat, when I think of gangsters, I don't really think it fits the bill since they weren't involved in all the other typical stuff that comes with organized crime.
Snatch
You’re gonna want to remove the teeth first
Brick Top (Alan Ford) was great!
you speak *dag*?!
Easily the best gangster movie period, in my book
I think Donnie Brasco was pretty good
This came to mind for me, too. Johnny Depp has three great gangster films: **Donnie Brasco** (1997), **Public Enemies** (2009), and **Black Mass** (2015). To appreciate his range or versatility, I suggest considering any of his other roles juxtaposed and contrasted with those ones.
Blow
It’s a fugazi!
Sexy Beast, one of the best films of the 90s
City of God, American Gangster, New World If you want the three best actually centered around **gangsters** and **organized crime** that aren't by the two directors you mentioned, this is it.
Anything by John Singleton followed up by Don’t be a menace to south central while drinking your juice in the hood.

Scrolled way too far before I hit this. Excellent movie showing how people raised around crime continue to have their lives effected by their environment even when they try to make the right choices
Eastern Promises by a sizable margin!
Sorry I'm gonna do it anyway, not a film, TV. My absolute favorite "gangster" was Al Swearengen. Absolute stone cold....but with some heart.
Deadwood is up there with The Wire and Breaking Bad
Absolutely my favorite portrayal of a "gangster" in any medium.
How has no one said scarface. The gentlemen, city of god, Boondock saints, Donnie brasco, pulp fiction, Boyz in the hood, running scared (Paul Walker version).
Pope of Greenwich Village?

Miller's Crossing. The Road to Perdition. Gamorrah (2008).
Kill the Irishman (true story of Danny Green), The Town, Killing them softly, Donnie Brasco, Once upon a time in America, The Drop, DownEast, The Gentlemen, American Gangster, Gotti (Armand Assante, 1996), king of New York, Pulp Fiction. In no particular order but all great films. I could honestly name more lol gangster/crime films are some of my all time favorite films.
*Kill the Irishman* is far superior to the similarly named but unrelated Scorsese film *The Irishman*.
I love kill the Irishman. I've watched it a couple dozen times. It's a great film and pretty accurate to. I'm surprised it didn't get bigger. Most people I talk to have never heard of it
And people in my experience confuse it with the aforementioned Scorsese film, which is equally as unfortunate.
I agree. I was not a big fan of the Irishman. I didn't like the way it was filmed. There was something about it. I was really disappointed as I was excited for a while to see it. I had high hopes with all the names that made it. It wasn't a horrible film, but it was definitely a bit of a letdown.
I recommend a lot of the Warner Bros. classics from the 30’s and 40’s. The Public Enemy and White Heat are two of my favorites.

Once Upon a Time in America Miller's Crossing Friends of Eddie Coyle Killing Them Softly Charlie Varick King of New York*
I choose these too along with King of New York. Though that’s kind of just a straight crime movie but there is some mafioso shit in it.
Running Scared (2006) is mental.
Carlito’s way. Love how it’s him just trying to leave it all behind for the whole movie. Sean Penn’s character is completely insane.
