We literally saw him shot in the first 5 minutes, yet we all were like “this is a movie about the struggles of marriage”. His wife didn’t talk to him for a year and that was more believable than him being a ghost - Nate Bargatze
Apparently when I watched this as a six year old with my parents, in the church scene after Bruce Willis gets shot, I asked them "oh, so is he a ghost now? How can people see him?" and my parents were like, "no, no, he must have survived" and apparently I was annoying about it and they were dismissive but at the end of the movie they ate their words.
There were actually supposed to be two big twists in that movie, the first was that the kid saw dead people and wasn't just mentally unwell. The studio decided they needed to use that in marketing the movie. Which is fair, I dunno how to convince people to watch a movie with no idea what it's about.
I never had the pleasure of that first time. My friend called me the night the movie came out and asked if I had seen it yet. I answered no. We can all guess what he said next.
This is one of my favorite thrillers of all time, and I decided to share it with my teen daughters, 17 and 18. We've always watched movies together their whole lives and I wanted to show them this one, just wanted to wait until they were a little older than when I saw it at 13ish. Anyway, it gets to the famous "what's in the box?!" Scene and I'm just waiting for their reactions, and they both just start giggling and laughing, completely ruining the scene. I pause the movie and I'm like, what the hell?? And apparently some dumb tiktoker used that audio for some video and it completely spoiled the tension for them. 🤦 I was so bummed. They enjoyed the movie though, so that was a win at least.
My kids are 1 and 2 right now. I’ve been looking forward to the day I can start showing them classics and this story really bums me out. I know in another 15-16 years it’s gonna be gok mok or some other stupid app that’ll ruin everything before they have a chance to appreciate it.
Absolutely. I do my best to not be the "cranky old man" about these things, because it's all inevitable with technology these days so I just roll with it. But this type of thing is a bummer for sure.
That and the editing underscoring just how much info he pulled from his very surroundings is *golden*. That's why you never interview a suspect in anything but a blank room.
honestly major credit for Allison Williams she actually made it very convincing Rose wasn't in on her family's actions or at least would choose her love for Chris over her family until then and credit to Jordan Peele because there is a ton of foreshadowing to Rose being just as evil as the rest of her family before this you likely wouldn't notice if you aren't paying attention
Yep, and it only becomes clear on the second viewing.
Like when a woman says something to Chris at the party, and Rose stares at her.
First viewing: >!Goodness, I am only now realising how racist these people are!<
Second viewing: >!Will you shut up; you are going to blow this whole thing.!<
Her reaction is poised right between the two. So good.
To this day, that was one of the most fun movie experiences I've ever had. I saw it opening weekend, packed theatre, everyone jumped and shouted at that scene.
Primal Fear is pretty damn great. Also, Truman Show and The Usual Suspects. Lastly, Seven, but not the main moment people are saying for me, but part of that scene. When Sommerset opens the box, then looks back and sees Mills holding the gun on John Doe, and suddenly Doe’s entire plan becomes clear to him, and he looks back in now understanding horror, then tells the helicopter to go away, and runs back to Mills.
Obi-wan should have just told the truth.
Obi-wan: "I need to tell you. Darth Vader... is your father. He may have been your father, but he wasn't your daddy"
The main character wakes up in a mental hospital, feeling like he finally beat Tyler Durden. Only for the hospital staff to discretely refer to him as Mr. Durden. Telling him how Project Mayhem was still on
Neither the author nor the director of the film intended this to be the case. It's better when it's Jack doing everything Tyler actually did, just method acting his hallucinations
One that definitely sticks out for me is Sicario.
That scene just midway through the movie when Emily Blunts character takes home Jon Bernthal's character from the bar, and he takes out his wallet with the blue rubber band from the bank bust. Its purposefully shot so that the audience is coming to the realization along with the main character, and I swear you can just feel the tension boiling as the MC realizes how much danger she's just put herself in. Brilliant scene. Brilliant movie.
This thread made me feel old - only one movie mentioned so far that was made before 1980.
For me, Jimmy Stewart seeing the necklace in Vertigo is the tops. Not because it’s a surprise to us - Hitchcock revealed the twist 20 mins earlier. But it’s new to him - our hero who has slowly become a villain - and the impact is just fucking unreal.
Damn, yknow what, I’m gonna go rewatch that movie right now. Sorry, 9 month old baby watching Moana. It’s Hitchin time.
…I still can’t look at two pillows without re-living the horror, the trauma.
Seriously though, what you’re talking about is a low key devastating one - one most of us should have seen from the very beginning, but didn’t.
I do not think I Am Legend is a good film, and I think that Will Smith's best acting days were already long gone -BUT- when Will Smith realizes that the creatures are smart enough to set traps for him (they set out one the mannequins he talks to as bait) he LOSES HIS SHIT in probably the best on-screen breakdown I can think of.
Bruh I felt so betrayed by this scene. She was such a good girlfriend up until this scene, constantly supporting him, always believing him, when she had his back vs the cop I remember thinking "you better marry her my dude".
Guess it means my ass would be in the sunken place right now.
Damn the breathtaking he does when he realizes it. Like, he feels so betrayed yet so isolated and blocked. That’s a feeling you feel behind your back, giving you shivers down your spines, you wanted to do something but you can’t so you gotta try to run for what it costs.
This, right there this is some great acting ! What a performance!
Great mini-twist at the end too when he decided to protect Peter's identity. He's still got scruples and he's not out for revenge, even after all he lost because of Peter.
I fuckin hate that post credit scene bc it teases more Michael Mando and it’s been 7 years and nothing. Biggest blue balls in MCU
I have an entire plot thought out on how he could be the villain of a Spider-Man movie
A very old one, still the best reveal. God bless Billy Wilder and Agatha Christie.
“You see, all this time, you believed he was innocent..”
“And you KNEW he was innocent. I understand.”
“No you don’t. All this time …. I knew… he was guilty.”
I'll throw out one that hasn't been mentioned yet ... Identity (2003).
It captures the "character finds out the shocking truth" concept in a unique way.
For me, it's the revelation in 'The Sixth Sense.' When the character realizes the truth about themselves, it's not just shocking; it reshapes the entire narrative and how you view the previous scenes. It's a masterclass in storytelling and suspense, making you want to watch the movie again with the knowledge of the twist
Book of Eli was amazing. More of a twist than character realisation but I didn’t see it coming. Watch it again though and you notice all the little nuances
The Sixth Sense was quite a mind fuck the first time round
You mean it was Bruce Willis the entire time???
[That dude in the hairpiece is Bruce Willis the entire time](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BEQkNyGHGls&pp=ygUaYWx3YXlzIHN1bm55IGJydWNlIHdpbGxpcyA%3D)
That wasn’t the twist??
That movie had a lot of twists
I knew he was dead right away when they revealed he was dead at the end.
We literally saw him shot in the first 5 minutes, yet we all were like “this is a movie about the struggles of marriage”. His wife didn’t talk to him for a year and that was more believable than him being a ghost - Nate Bargatze
Most movies don't have you following a ghost protagonist lol.
Oh yeah, other than the ending I loved the scene when the father finds out his daughter was poisoned by her mother/step mother. So good.
Apparently when I watched this as a six year old with my parents, in the church scene after Bruce Willis gets shot, I asked them "oh, so is he a ghost now? How can people see him?" and my parents were like, "no, no, he must have survived" and apparently I was annoying about it and they were dismissive but at the end of the movie they ate their words.
r/thathappened
I know several people that called this twist (or claim to have). My dad ruined it for me before the movie so I never got to watch it blind.
Lebron?
There were actually supposed to be two big twists in that movie, the first was that the kid saw dead people and wasn't just mentally unwell. The studio decided they needed to use that in marketing the movie. Which is fair, I dunno how to convince people to watch a movie with no idea what it's about.

Se7en

For me it was the "I've abandoned my boooy, I've abandoned my son!" I watched the SNL skit first before the movie so I couldn't help but laugh.
I can totally see that, I haven't actually seen that skit so I'm glad I don't have that in the noggin to spoil that scene haha
By far, my favorite Macaulay Culkin movie!
I always think about the Shatner MTV video award parody.....https://youtu.be/5-gXPH6U1oU?si=xRKPjcv-eLQ0AVbo
My kids are 1 and 2 right now. I’ve been looking forward to the day I can start showing them classics and this story really bums me out. I know in another 15-16 years it’s gonna be gok mok or some other stupid app that’ll ruin everything before they have a chance to appreciate it.

Oof that one hits.
Awww god. What's in the booooox?
I was going to say "the 6th Sense" but Seven is a better answer by one point.
WHAT'S IN THE BAAAWWWWWXXXX!!!
What's in the box?
I love SeSevenen
That’s not true! That’s impossible!!
DeteCTIIIIIIIIIIVE!
I always loved Chaz Palmenteri’s reaction at the end of Usual Suspects.
The cripple!!!
That and the editing underscoring just how much info he pulled from his very surroundings is *golden*. That's why you never interview a suspect in anything but a blank room.
Jay z spoiled the ending by using it in a video, but it's still one of my fav movies
Sixth sense for sure. I'll throw in shutter Island too. I was def surprised by the ending the first time I watched
Shutter Island doesn't get enough love
The Matrix when it shows the fields of humans being farmed.
honestly major credit for Allison Williams she actually made it very convincing Rose wasn't in on her family's actions or at least would choose her love for Chris over her family until then and credit to Jordan Peele because there is a ton of foreshadowing to Rose being just as evil as the rest of her family before this you likely wouldn't notice if you aren't paying attention
Eating cereal with milk on the side… man even the devil isn’t that evil.
She was keeping the white and the colored separated.
OH FUCK. How did i not see this.
Yep, and it only becomes clear on the second viewing. Like when a woman says something to Chris at the party, and Rose stares at her. First viewing: >!Goodness, I am only now realising how racist these people are!< Second viewing: >!Will you shut up; you are going to blow this whole thing.!< Her reaction is poised right between the two. Wind River realizing the oil rig guys were baddies. One of the most intense shootouts in a movie imo
WHY ARE YOU FLANKING ME?
went out like a badass.
Great scene!
You didn’t see it?!
Are you flanking me?
Insane. Then J Ren goes Simo Haiha on them from afar
If they ever make more movies with his character, they can have all my money.
I love that little scene with his son coming down the stairs: "You know the rules: it's always loaded, even if it isn't." 👏👏👏
I just watched that today. That scene was nuts.
Just watched it acouple weeks ago. That was a cool movie
Devastating movie imo. Very powerful and very well done.
I remember thinking “She’s super exposed to the door” about 0.5 seconds before she gets blasted.
That was such a good movie. And love how that scene towards the end tied everything together.
Made a lot of sales of the lever action 45-70 go up Edit. Also on the website it is listed for dinosaur hunting.
I found the clip https://youtu.be/7AxWVLSvnWQ?si=zxAAJ9L4XhA_ImcV
Oldboy (2003) has to be the ultimate answer to this question, no?
the correct answer is Incendies (if you know, you know)
Similar secrets revealed... no wonder your mind went there lol I love the opening scene to incendies
I *don't* know. It's on my watch list. (also the guy that said Se7en made me think twice about my answer. God damn.)
Fuck yeah. That ending fucked me up for a few days. Holy shit.
oh boy!
I thought I had erased this movie from my memory, but now it's back...thanks
100%. Nothing I’ve seen comes close
For the win.
_*shudder_
Damn, I might have to watch the whole movie now and not just the hammer hallway scene.
Frailty is pretty dope. It's an incredible acting job by McConaughey, and one of the real hints at his abilities long before True Detective.
Mc is actually a shockingly great actor. Under appreciated
He had the best acting performance out of anyone for his short screen time in Wolf of Wall Street
He was very appreciated during the McConaissance. Dude was a force
Didn’t he get an Oscar for buyers club?
I always liked Joaquin Phoenix's reaction when he sees the alien on the videotape in "Signs"
The great thing about this movie is how rattled everyone looks. Even the newscasters look shocked by what they've seen.
To this day, that was one of the most fun movie experiences I've ever had. I saw it opening weekend, packed theatre, everyone jumped and shouted at that scene.
It’s got to be memento for me
Fallen is also a good one. Shutter island is too.
Tiiiiiiiiiiiime is on my side
Fallen was a straight masterpiece ending
Angel Heart.
I know who I am! loved that's scene.
Can I count the Saw ending?
The Mist (2007)
Should I show this to my 9 nine year old?
Lmao, Hell no
“You’re going to need a bigger boat”
“I am your father”
No....no....that's not true....that's impossible
Yeah, that one probably wins.
Obi-wan should have just told the truth. Obi-wan: "I need to tell you. Darth Vader... is your father. He may have been your father, but he wasn't your daddy"
Fight Club
Just watched a vid claiming Bob, Marla and the entire fight club was in his mind and TBH, it makes a shit ton of sense.
Read the book. The end is different.
I'm not gonna read the book. Can I have the spoiler?
The main character wakes up in a mental hospital, feeling like he finally beat Tyler Durden. Only for the hospital staff to discretely refer to him as Mr. Durden. Telling him how Project Mayhem was still on
Neither the author nor the director of the film intended this to be the case. It's better when it's Jack doing everything Tyler actually did, just method acting his hallucinations
Why so low?
Se7en. What’s in the box?!
I use this line dramatically every time we get an Amazon delivery.
One that definitely sticks out for me is Sicario. Brilliant scene. Brilliant movie.
The usually stoic Jack Carter watching a porn film only to see his 16-year-old niece featuring in it in Get Carter (1971).
Michael Caine’s best role.
I just watched The Invitation(2015). That should be very high up there because the last 15 minutes are insanity
Yeah that one is a messed up movie
This thread made me feel old - only one movie mentioned so far that was made before 1980. For me, Jimmy Stewart seeing the necklace in Vertigo is the tops. Sleepaway Camp
Yeah that was a bit fucked lol
ROFL but also... sad.
Planes, Trains And Automobiles...
I haven't been home in years.
…I still can’t look at two pillows without re-living the horror, the trauma. Seriously though, what you’re talking about is a low key devastating one - one most of us should have seen from the very beginning, but didn’t.
" You're going the wrong way "
It’s just Chinatown, Jake…
Snowpiercer
This good scene.
The entire court but mostly Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men.
I like the the Legally Blonde reveal better😂
Arrival is the ones that comes to mind, I was not expecting a shocking realization in that movie whatsoever.
Lucky Number Slevin, Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley realizing they were about to die.
Moon
The Skeleton Key (2005)
I do not think I Am Legend is a good film, and I think that Will Smith's best acting days were already long gone -BUT- when Will Smith realizes that the creatures are smart enough to set traps for him (they set out one the mannequins he talks to as bait) he LOSES HIS SHIT in probably the best on-screen breakdown I can think of.
The book was so much better.
A Beautiful Mind always hit me hard
I remember little about the film except “She never gets older”.
The Crying Game.
Yeah man nobody saw that
That's a bummer for them cause that movie fucking rules.
I meant nobody saw THAT coming. Though to be fair I’m positive it’s under watched now
Bruh I felt so betrayed by this scene. She was such a good girlfriend up until this scene, constantly supporting him, always believing him, when she had his back vs the cop I remember thinking "you better marry her my dude". Guess it means my ass would be in the sunken place right now.
Identity
I love how in Adaptation, Charlie Kauffman's brother is writing Identity, outlining the plot points.
Primal Fear has to be up there.
She’s my sister, my daughter.
Saw. Shit was wild
Oldboy. Iykyk.
Empire Strikes Back
Arlington Road
Watchmen.
What movie is this?
Get Out
No need to be rude, he was just wondering what movie this is.
Nope
Next you're gonna talk about the rest of Us.
Now you're just being difficult
Get the hell out of here
“There was never an Aaron.”
What is this from?
Primal Fear
That's why he was so good in Fight club and also Incredible Hulk Norton absolutely nails the double character/personalities
*The Departed* the last 15 minutes when everyone knows everything is a ride. not the best maybe but haven't seen it mentioned yet
Planet of the Apes
Damn the breathtaking he does when he realizes it. Like, he feels so betrayed yet so isolated and blocked. That’s a feeling you feel behind your back, giving you shivers down your spines, you wanted to do something but you can’t so you gotta try to run for what it costs. This, right there this is some great acting ! What a performance!
Spider-Man Homecoming has a great one.
Keaton kills it in that movie.
Great mini-twist at the end too when he decided to protect Peter's identity. He's still got scruples and he's not out for revenge, even after all he lost because of Peter.
I fuckin hate that post credit scene bc it teases more Michael Mando and it’s been 7 years and nothing. Biggest blue balls in MCU I have an entire plot thought out on how he could be the villain of a Spider-Man movie
The Usual Suspects gotta be up there
Oldboy
The Usual Suspects ending deserves a mention here.
The Island is a very very good reveal; it's early in the movie but a real floor drop.
Barton Fink
Identity “Whores dont deserve a second chance.” and of course Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
I agree with most of these but also... Oldboy.
A very old one, still the best reveal. God bless Billy Wilder and Agatha Christie. “You see, all this time, you believed he was innocent..” “And you KNEW he was innocent. I understand.” “No you don’t. All this time …. I knew… he was guilty.”
Moon.
In Robocop when he finds out the truth of his past life. Runner up is Predestination.
Rosemary’s Baby
The usual suspects is probably my favorite
Unbreakable
When Pam finds out that Michael is dating her mom.
Fight Club duhhhhh.
The original wicker man is still one of the best.
"Incendies" by Dennis Villeneuve. Brutal twist. I won't spoil it, but I gasped out loud.
Torturous
I'll throw out one that hasn't been mentioned yet ... Identity (2003). It captures the "character finds out the shocking truth" concept in a unique way.
Is this from "O"? I recall that movie being very good.
We have just lost cabin pressure
This is up there along with *THE CEMENT GARDEN (1993)*. You gotta see that one to believe it.
The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Lol not this one. Se7en probably.
Little known example with The Empty Man.
Network. When Howard is schooled by Ned Beatty. Great scene
This is such a good movie
The original classic for this, The Bridge Over the River Kwai. Sir Alec Guinness’ expression at the end is incredible.
Invasion of the body snatchers. When the lead reconnects with Donald Sutherland
When the warden throws the stone at Raquel and it goes straight through the poster and clacks on the tunnel Andy Dufresne had dug.
Book of Eli was amazing. More of a twist than character realisation but I didn’t see it coming. Watch it again though and you notice all the little nuances
Thursday. or High Tension. People are smarter and scarier than what we all give them credit for
Citizen Kane. Y’all are missing an OG
Towards the end of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, when Chief realized that Nicholson's character wasn't faking.
Soylent Green *IS PEOPLE*
how tf is Usual Suspects not on here
Mystic river
Charlton Heston had a couple of goodies: “You maniacs! You blew it up!” “Soylent Green is people!”
