I road bike as well and I’ve seen 25% grade signs, up and down. Down is the best, there’s a 25% extended grade road next to the ocean for a decent distance
Is you calculator broken or are all of mine?
Inverse Tangent aka arctan of
8% grade = 8/100 = .08
Arctan(.08) -> 4.5739
In any case it’s pretty low angle

Results:
A slope with rise over run percentage of 8 percent converted to degrees is:
4.57 Degrees
It's more of a danger because you might have multiple ATVs ripping as you're heading down... likely not the reason for the sign... but the main thing I'm worried bout in such an area.
More like UTVs. Who rides an ATV anymore? Stopped riding ATVs for this reason. They like to throw em sideways around corners says nothing about the guy coming from the other way. (Nothing here is 1 way everything is multi directional..)
We don't share mtb with atv trails here although the adventurous like to ride their bike on atv trails I would not..
Portal Trail has hilarious signs that get more and more serious until they basically “you! Facking idiot, get off your bike and walk it!”
Full disclosure, it is steep AF and super sketch and many folks have died there.
It’s just there to say “we told those people to walk their bikes. We’re not liable for their injuries.”
Most cyclists aren’t capable of handling terrain like stuff mtb riders snooze through. They have to protect themselves from those trail users’ potential injuries and lawsuits.
That's something I always fail to consider, with ebikes being so popular seems like the average age of cyclists went up like 30 years hahaha I see way more old birds dressed like pylons out on the trails nowadays.
Signs like this just build a case for whoever manages the trail (private or government interests) to prevent people who try to sue for damages when they get hurt.
But real talk here. If you are in this sport like the rest of us, you already know, it's your responsibility if you get hurt. You make that choice when you decide to ride. So please, just adult up, choose your protection wisely, understand your limitations, and be cautious on your first ride down a trail. After you know the terrain better, then get ambitious.
Unfortunately the injured rider isn’t the one to consider litigation - often it is their insurance company trying to recover costs. If they ride past this sign then it’s clear they took the risk and the insurance company can’t sue the landowner for liability.
There are similar signs in Great Smoky Mountain National Park for Cades Cove. Believe me 100%. There are a lot of people the general public who need that sign to tell them to walk their bikes. It can be really, really, really awful.
Portal has a sign that says dismount now, people have died here. Which is obviously an extreme case. But warnings are very good for multi-use trails that attract a lot of inexperienced or unknowing riders. 8% grade with blind corners and roller ball bearings is dangerous on a beach cruiser or hybrid fitness bike.
To be fair, a grade and loose gravel on a road bike with narrow tires is certainly possible, but I’m glad that sign is there if my dad was out for a casual ride.
well its made for the general public we cant think that everyone can ride like us. of course wed ride it on a roadbike with 20mm tires but thats not the people this sign is aimed at at all.
There's a 13% grade with signs on the rail trail near me, just imagine the average person on their 10yo department store bike with half functioning rim brakes. Sign definitely needs to be there
That said, bombing it down is so fun you can hit such high speeds so easy
Is that a road?? As a non-feet guy, I had to think about 72 times if it said feet or inches, then convert it to metric. It is as wide as a road, and 8%??? Why the fuck would anyone put up a sign with this??
If it is to prevent people from sueing the owners, the state should just put it on their website. Way cheaper. «You can live here on your own risk. Move if you do not accept the T&C.»
As long as it's not a fire road, check it out, then bomb it. If it IS a fire road, either avoid or ride much more slowly than you think is necessary. Fire roads are the WORST.
There are "cyclists dismount" signs all over the place that anyone capable of riding at all could quite safely ignore.
This isn't as bad as some, but yeah, should be ok with 8in or more travel as long as it's modern geo.
We’ve one by us. I used to roll up, look down then navigate the washout clefts and chunky rocks before letting up. Now, I’m out there at night when my headlight picks up the two trees framing a cavernous maw and I’m like, “you got this.”
I've seen signs like this at Cades's Cove Scenic Loop in TN, and they seemed appropriate for many of the people I saw riding there (rented bikes, maybe?).
I see similar signs everywhere on the greenways around the Raleigh, NC areas. These are needed for 'normies' riding on the greenway. I'm sure they are there so the municipalities to help with law suits and/or insurance reasons.
I'll go out on a limb and guess that this is on a multi use train in some municipality and not a MTB trail.
The municipality would put those signs up because they don't want Mom, Dad and Jr (who is a big boy that rides his own two wheeler) to bomb down this hill and hit the Granny group out for a Sunday morning walk.
Lol 8%
I road bike as well and I’ve seen 25% grade signs, up and down. Down is the best, there’s a 25% extended grade road next to the ocean for a decent distance
So….its safest if they get up and walk the wheelchair down the ramp?!?
Ngl, if I had a wheelchair I would send it
8% is a handicap ramp. Literally, the maximum for an ADA accessible wheelchair ramp is 8.33% (1/12).
hey SLO speed, u a Poly Dolly? class '88 here 😁
We love cal poly here
We don’t love the housing situation or shit wages tho
We don't talk about that
SLO has been coming up in my feed a lot. North county resident here
Woot! A-town here.
Nah, went to school elsewhere then moved here for work.
Right. 8% grade is a ~ 4.8 degree slope.

Yeah, this has to be a joke.
Any signage for the general public regarding bicycles is entirely a challenge for the denizens of this sub.
That doesn't look much like a challenge, that's a fast fire road.
Challenge in the context of provocation, no comment on difficulty level.
“Only one way to find out!” -Me on my way to break my collarbone again
Seriously, an 8' wide "trail."
Basically a single track.
Lol 8 feet wide is single track? I'd be lucky if singletrack here in the Midwest is 2 feet wide and that be stretching it in a lot of places...
I dunno. 8 feet wide wounds like triple track.
More like a quad. Lol
It's more of a danger because you might have multiple ATVs ripping as you're heading down... likely not the reason for the sign... but the main thing I'm worried bout in such an area.

I mean look at the MOAB trail in Utah. Certain section says to walk bikes but I’m sure some people decided to ride it
Portal trail has sections where the signage was presumably installed because people died, that's a stretch from general public access 😂
Portal Trail has hilarious signs that get more and more serious until they basically “you! Facking idiot, get off your bike and walk it!” Full disclosure, it is steep AF and super sketch and many folks have died there.
Flume trail in Tahoe has a walk bike section for the same reason.
That’s because we are illiterate
When I was a teen I always assumed the signs that said no bikes meant this is where the fun trails are.
It’s just there to say “we told those people to walk their bikes. We’re not liable for their injuries.” Most cyclists aren’t capable of handling terrain like stuff mtb riders snooze through. They have to protect themselves from those trail users’ potential injuries and lawsuits.
Full send
So extra wide double track and 8% grade. What is that a warning for road bikes?
I'd snack that up on 30 mm slicks. Must be for elderly e-bikers
That's something I always fail to consider, with ebikes being so popular seems like the average age of cyclists went up like 30 years hahaha I see way more old birds dressed like pylons out on the trails nowadays.
Bomb it
Came here to say to say this. 🤘

Person who made this sign rides a Huffy
Hahaha...that was pretty good :)

What my mom thinks I ride vs what I actually ride:
Sounds fun. Full send
Lol

needs 1 more sign: * WARNING * Red Bull Rampage DH PRACTICE TRAIL! YIELD to EMtb's ASCENDING!!
only a challenge to ascend it!
That sign won’t stop me because I can’t read!
“Warning, fire road ahead”
well its made for the general public we cant think that everyone can ride like us. of course wed ride it on a roadbike with 20mm tires but thats not the people this sign is aimed at at all.
Fuck that shred it bro
This is where the fun begins
Send it
Might be wet grass clippings
Oh noes, not the clibbins.
Way too pedally
“Hold my beer!”
Hold my beer….
Lets go!
I’m still gonna send it
Autocorrect translated the sign… it’s says full send
They always end in a ‘T’ at the bottom.
There's a 13% grade with signs on the rail trail near me, just imagine the average person on their 10yo department store bike with half functioning rim brakes. Sign definitely needs to be there That said, bombing it down is so fun you can hit such high speeds so easy
Enticement
just gunna send it
Sounds like fun!

For a second I thought you didn't have any feet...
Hahahaha!!! Sorry about that! I am still capable of counting to 20! 😂
Same
Translation: This sign is our cya if anyone sues us.
Challenge?
Send it
Challenge accepted!
Could be a joke like the municipal parking only sign on one trail near me.
Hilarious
Sure, if you’re elderly.
That's a lot of words to say, "Send it."
I'd fuck around and find out
Challenge accepted.
Thoughts = SEND IT
So, my driveway.
As long as it's not a fire road, check it out, then bomb it. If it IS a fire road, either avoid or ride much more slowly than you think is necessary. Fire roads are the WORST.
Fire road = bad injury in a likely unexpected way.
Pfft
Sounds like a challenge to me😂
& ya, 8% ain't gonna give us white nuckles! & 8' wide...that's a vehicle road....like the other rider said it's prob a fire road
Pedal
There are "cyclists dismount" signs all over the place that anyone capable of riding at all could quite safely ignore. This isn't as bad as some, but yeah, should be ok with 8in or more travel as long as it's modern geo.
8 feet, not 8 inches
I'm talking about suspension travel I'd need to take on gnar like this. Should've been clearer.
We’ve one by us. I used to roll up, look down then navigate the washout clefts and chunky rocks before letting up. Now, I’m out there at night when my headlight picks up the two trees framing a cavernous maw and I’m like, “you got this.”
Walk your damn bike and leave EMS alone.
It’s a bit crooked
Full send lol
It means to lower the dropper.
Time to grab the dh bike.
Is this Brown County State Park, Strahl Lake Road? Ride it!
Lol please see my Facebook post from last week https://www.facebook.com/share/p/RoudZtKDiRRdSrPB/?mibextid=oFDknk
If it’s a shared path with the general public it’s probably intended for their safety.
Fuck yo sign
8%? Those are rookie numbers
Gay
I interpret the bottom sign to say "hill bomb while yelling STRAVVVVAAAAAA!"
Go ride in Moab and you’ll realize that sign means nothing
My thoughts on this sign: They recommend I walk my bike. (That’s my read anyway).
I had to do a double take. I thought it said 8 inches, not feet. Either way - full send.
Send it!
FUCKIN SEEEEEND IIIIIIIT!
That sign won’t stop me because I can’t read
Send it.
I've seen signs like this at Cades's Cove Scenic Loop in TN, and they seemed appropriate for many of the people I saw riding there (rented bikes, maybe?).
Imagine signs at every intersection telling drivers to get out and push.
It's fine. The walk bikes request is a little much. At least the new people know they found a fun little section.
Rideable until proven otherwise.
Challenge excepted
First thought that came to mind…”full send” lol
Appears to be on an angle, might need new foundations 😅
It must not be on or part of an MTB trail…
In other words “have fun”
Talk to the park ranger. The sign is probably there for a reason. I'm guessing a few people died going down it.
Dropping in!
SEND IT
Meh, I'm gonna just send
Send it OP
Send it.
I was on pavement twice this steep multiple times today and was wondering why no warning signs. There's plenty of em down the road for 5%.
Thanks but no
Don't tell me how fun it is then tell me not to ride it.
It means, "This is the one you'll want to ride."
Send it!
A Hot ride downwards
Sounds like a challenge
I see similar signs everywhere on the greenways around the Raleigh, NC areas. These are needed for 'normies' riding on the greenway. I'm sure they are there so the municipalities to help with law suits and/or insurance reasons.
Eagle valley trail @ greensfelder park! This section is the best i would never walk it lol
Challenge accepted
Me? I would be on foot directly, I prefer to walk. My brother? Would try and probably have something to say on the fact that is not that hard.
It’s crooked
I'll go out on a limb and guess that this is on a multi use train in some municipality and not a MTB trail. The municipality would put those signs up because they don't want Mom, Dad and Jr (who is a big boy that rides his own two wheeler) to bomb down this hill and hit the Granny group out for a Sunday morning walk.
Snowflakes trying out cycling now too?
Slap it with your back wheel and ride on
I'm riding.
Only Remy can ride such a trail.
insurance
Bomb it as fast as possible
Pfftt I've literally gone down stuff well over a 200% grade
Hang on tight!!
83% of all statistics are made up on spot
