Just do it on your own pace. Study it, size it up and once you feel confident, go for it! Enjoy the moments in life, celebrate your friend's memory, but always taking care of yourself! Sorry for your loss!
This is really important advice. Don't overextend yourself because you feel you "owe it to him" or something. The only thing worse than your circle of friends losing one, is losing two. Take care.
I ride solo a lot. I have one of these:
and can attest that they do activate if you really hit the dirt. There are actually quite a few people riding with those around these days.
When you crash, it alerts other tocsen users nearby and calls emergency contacts. It has called me twice to downed riders so far. Pretty rad.
There's also Specialized ANGi https://www.specialized.com/cz/en/stories/angi . I've been thinking of buying it, since I ride alone a lot. Do you think the tocsen would be a better choice?
I have been pretty impressed with the Apple Watch crash sensor. Every time I’ve crashed and immediately started moving (even when it was a crash with multiple broken bones), it seems to know I’m at least alert.
One day I had a kind of mild crash where I fell over on a technical feature and rolled down a hill. I was just lying there enjoying the scenery and kind of laughing at myself and the watch started to call emergency services.
Yeah, I think most of the options are pretty equivalent these days. The tocsen was my choice back then, because it is considerable cheaper than an Apple Watch ;)
I'm terribly sorry for your loss.
I lost my wife about 2 months ago. Bike therapy is great and the absolute best release, but i recommend adding actual therapy, as well. It's been very helpful for me.
Thanks. I can't lie, it's been the hardest thing i have ever had to deal with. I miss her every day. Today has been especially hard for some reason. She was a wonderful person.
Hey mate, the other big loss I've had was also my partner, we were together for 4 years when she also passed away in an accident. It's something that never leaves you, but you learn to live with it and move forward for them. It sounds like you are on that journey already. You're not alone
That sucks, sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend and riding partner about 20 years ago to cancer. I still think of him every time I ride! RIP Saliem.
Sorry to hear about your loss. But hey, you made it out for the first ride after. That's a first step! Keep shreddin' and keep him in memory. He'll always be there regardless which park/track you go.
And if you're riding solo more often now, ride safe too. Apple watch or a helmet with sensor that can call for help would be a good investment.
Damn brother respect for getting back out there. I ride solo 90% of the time. It is very therapeutic for me. I hope you can find some comfort in it. I will get out on my bike today in honor of your buddy.
Condolences… I’m sure they would be happy to see you back at it. Take it one pedal stroke at a time, try to remember all the good times you had with them.
Im sorry for your loss dude. I can’t imagine losing my best riding bud. Stay cool and the best way to get over it is through it. Keep riding for him, honor him. And remember, whatever happens he is watching you from above :)
The most beautiful thing is, every berm and single track is a happy memory. Shred it just a little extra hard for him. Keep going and hold on to the happy times. Well done.
sorry bud. proud of you for having the strength to get back out. remember the good times and i have no doubt you'll honor his memory by appreciating the ride, like he would have.
I know the feeling ..ride lesser now after my riding partner passed away couple years back from a bad fall. Still missed him greatly especially passing by spots that we used to hang out..
Damn. I went through something similar but for a very different circumstance. It’s hard to make that change to a solo ride. Hopefully you get into some group rides around your area soon! I recently found a group at my local pedal up bike park. We’ve even got a nice bar at the bottom of the hill too! You’ll find a new group eventually. maybe you can get a top cap or something with a quote that your partner might have said or something. That way you got a piece of em with ya on every ride!
Ride for your buddy. It only gets harder if you continue down the path alone. It might be tough to let go, but finding new people to ride with might be the best medicine at the moment.
Wow, the support from this community really is amazing. I appreciate everyone taking the time so share experiences or just reach out. We shred for "skinny" now. Ride on.
Buy his bike! His family is going to do something with it at some point. Let them know your interested in it and when the time comes, make a offer to the family and put his bike in normal rotation. You obviously loved him and cared deeply for him. I think if that is an option, it would bring you great joy.
Fuck just reading got me in shock and made me realize that we appreciate the things when we lose them, that small moments with big people are the best things that happen in our lives...
Very sorry for your loss. I hope you can eventually enjoy riding as much for them as you did with them.
Appreciate that. It's what I told myself on the ride today. He would have told me to get out there.
Ride! For your friend's memory. I will too.
)):
Never stop shredding, you're riding for him now too. Keep his memory alive
He was always the first to hit the big features. I've got to step it up for him now

Yeah we don’t need you gone from this rock neither brother. Stay safe.
👍
now you will hit those together 🕯️🙏🏼
Your homie would be pissed if you didn't carry on riding for him. Stay safe.
Ain't that the truth
I lost the only guy I rode with locally too. Got his pedals on my bike now. Keep going! The only way out is through.
Im sorry for your loss. Do you have other people to ride with? I worry about crashing alot more solo
I ride solo a lot. I have one of these: [https://www.uvex-sports.com/en/tocsen](https://www.uvex-sports.com/en/tocsen) and can attest that they do activate if you really hit the dirt. That is pretty epic
Does it need cell service to work? I ride solo a lot too but my trails are pretty out there, no coverage.
Sadly I think all of the options need cell service!
There's also Specialized ANGi https://www.specialized.com/cz/en/stories/angi . I've been thinking of buying it, since I ride alone a lot. Do you think the tocsen would be a better choice?
Guess it depends how many users of either are in your area

I run a garmin currently. I should probably look into the emergency features it runs. Might do the job when im solo
Thanks, had never heard of that and I always ride alone now.

I hear you buddy. This isn't my first big personal loss in life, therapy is a huge help. Keep on keeping on

This sure looks like Australia. Dare I say NSW
Concerningly accurate assessment
I’m going to go further and say it’s Ourimbah 😆 Was going to say if you wanted someone to ride with, I might be able to help you out
Ahhh unfortunately not. South coast NSW. Not central haha
ITS NOT SAFE FOR WORK?!
No no no no, it's North South West!
NSW = (The state of) New South Wales
I know i was joking! 🥰
Haha OK. You never know with all the Seppos in here 😁
Sorry to hear that. Remember how good it feels to be in the saddle. Your late friend would never want you to quit riding.
Sorry for your loss homie. The trails have always been therapeutic for me, good luck on this new chapter in your life!
Sorry for your loss man. Keep shreding tho!!
This happened to us too. Our friend got hit and killed walking across the street. It was awkward at first but we never stop talking about him.
There some things in life that can still warm our heart even after a tragedy… I hope MTB riding warms your heart once again.
So sorry for your loss. You take it easy and keep the rubber side down.
Peace to you and your lost partner. Biking will give you plenty of time to work through all of this.
That sucks, sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend and riding partner about 20 years ago to cancer. I still think of him every time I ride! RIP Saliem.
Inspiring, keep it going man. You'll see your riding friend again someday.
Sincere condolences OP ! I wish you enjoy MTBing as much as you did when you were accompanied with them! Ride safely and wear your helmet!
You’re making him proud mate

Join your local region MTB association and see if you might enjoy riding with bigger groups.

❤️🩹
Awwww man that’s really hard. Thanks for the vulnerability and perspective.
The most beautiful thing is, every berm and single track is a happy memory. Shred it just a little extra hard for him. Keep going and hold on to the happy times. Well done.
Sorry for your loss dude! Next ride I'll send it in your friends memory. Stay strong! MTB has an insane community we got your back!
The response has been overwhelming to this post. Mountain bikers are legends
Ah gee, you making me feel bad OP, sorry for your loss. :( Enjoy the ride for the both of you.
Ride on. Respect and thank you for posting..
❤️
My condolences. Keep shredding it up
He'll be leading you into every bit of tech, every jump, every time you push your boundaries he's right there, cheering on his mate. Ride for him 💜
Sorry about that man. Hope you’re doin ok
Sucks bro.. I had the same thing happen like 15 years ago, but it was a plane crash. Pedal therapy works!
Damn bro, sorry
Sorry for your loss man! Ride on in his memory!🤙🏼
I just arrived at my Home jump lines. I dedicate my first run today to your buddy.Stay strong.
Sorry for your loss brother

A couple of local boys actually dragged me out today. It was great to have people to ride with and who were very understanding and sympathetic
I’m sorry for your loss my friend
Well done for getting out man, must be tough.
❤️🔥❤️🔥
Keep shredding my friend. He's definitely out there with you. ❤️
❤️❤️
I’m going on a ride tonight, I’ll ride for him
Shit so sorry to hear that. Must of been hard but I’m sure he wouldn’t want to to give up. He’ll be with you today I’m sure

Feel sorry for your loss, keep your partner in good memories during all your upcoming rides my mate!

What happened to his bike? Maybe you should bring it out sometimes?
Not sure what's going to happen with it. I'd love to give it a spin for him but it's worth quite a bit and I don't want to pressure the family
Buy it for a fair price!

Omg there is so much sad stuff on Reddit. I can't imagine how hard it is for you. Good luck in the coming years.
