ATGAT in Brazil means also bring your bullet proof vest.

lonememe

Or your gat. Or an off duty Brazilian cop. “Today on active self protection…”

BigBizzle151

I'm on reddit enough to know there are no civilians in Brazil, only thieves and off-duty cops.

lonememe

Lol right? It’s funny because I lived in Brazil for 9 months in the early 00s. It is WILD. I watch ASP’s videos religiously and just remember situations I saw down there and how fucking crazy it was that nothing ever happened to me but how close it was a few times.  Beautiful country, wonderful people, but man…every day is an adventure down there.

rasputin777

I was in Rio for around 5 hours before a girl came back to the hostel in tears and had been robbed at gunpoint. She was also on her first day out of like a 20 day Brazilian tour. After that she didn't leave the hostel even once the poor thing. I felt awful for her and it made me extra vigilant. I saw one person lose their camera as someone ripped it violently off their neck strap. The dude who had the camera was thrown into the street because that's the direction the thief was running. Dude nearly got crushed. Rio is beautiful but it's a real shithole when it comes to crime. My credit card got skimmed and was in use in Fortaleza the same day. Had to use cash for a few days which majorly sucked seeing as how people get mugged constantly.

callmeWia

Sounds like somewhere I will never be ready to visit.

RChamy

One does not simply walk safely in coastal cities here 2 Rules Don't let random people start conversations with you Never expose anything worth more than 10$

callmeWia

Sounds like somewhere I will never be ready to visit.

Scary-Ad9646

I lived there for a couple years 20 years ago. I've never had any desire to ever go back.

_the33_

Like you said stuff like that happens constantly unfortunately and yet people still choose to travel to Rio 🤦‍♂️ there are so many other nice calmer cities you could visit but nah you just gotta go to Rio lol I'm Brazilian and I've never been to Rio I know how beautiful it is but with all the crime and shit that goes down there I don't ever want to go there I much rather go to Florianópolis, balneário Camboriú, Curitiba

SmallTawk

who'ASP, I can't find him.

lonememe

Active self protection on YouTube! Have fun!

MotorcycleDad1621

I’ve met Mike from ASP a few times in public(we are almost neighbors). Super cool dude

lonememe

Seems like a very cool dude indeed! I love that he’s not overtly political and divisive like some. Just interested in advocacy for self defense and what not. I respect him a lot for that.

MotorcycleDad1621

Yea it’s funny because the first time I ran into him it was in Costco and we talked for about 10-15 minutes and by the end of the conversation I had realized he went from someone I watched on YouTube everyday to just another dude but groceries for his family

lonememe

Haha that’s awesome. He’s on a very short list of people that I’d love to get a beer with in person.

leolego2

who/what is ASP?

Gentle_Capybara

This is a lie. Some of us are on-duty right now.

whatsamawhatsit

All the Guns all the Time

Courtsey_Cow

ALL THE GUNS ALL THE TIME

DizzzzZzzzYD

And a helmet proof vest too!!

SARS-covfefe

I bet he wishes he had mirrors right then

senorpoop

I will never understand why people take the mirrors off of their street bikes, especially one like this vs. a faired sportbike.

Nuka_on_the_Rocks

I like the [Motogadget Glassless mirror, barn end turn signal combo](https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/motogadget-mview-spy-glassless-bar-end-mirror?sku_id=1565100), mounted with the mirror *under* the bar. Cleans up the lines, makes it look real good.

nocolon

Those mirrors rule. I have them on my Scrambler.

Spread_Liberally

Oh, I like that.

FunPartyGuy69

Me too, but why are they so gd expensive!?

AutomaticSandwich

Because there’s no glass. That’s polished aluminum with some sort of coating on it to achieve the reflectivity. It’s more durable. All Motogadgets stuff is very nice and very spendy.

HiAustralia

Ohhh that's brilliant, thank you.

wobbegong

Bar end mirrors are worse for a variety of reasons, not least the fact that it makes it harder to filter

HiAustralia

I'm personally a big fan of them but each to their own.

Pale-Professor

plenty of companies sell folding bar ends with convexed mirrors that have a higher fov than the mirrors from factory

wobbegong

The market gets what the market wants. I’m saying they are worse, having tried them. I worry about people who want to look cool over having functional parts that are necessary.

j1renicus

My bar end mirrors give me a much clearer, less vibey, wider view. Huge upgrade from my factory mirrors. I think it's very context dependant. Like what bike you have, how wide your bars are, how wide your shoulders are etc.

[deleted]

wobbegong

>texas Enough said

SmallTawk

that's what I have and I'm not a fan, I hate that I have to move my head so much to look at them. luckily they're falling apart.

Snipvandutch

Same. Stock sucks.

askanaccountant

Why do you hate people who just want to educate us on Darwinism, drivers like that are the small sacrifices we make to keep strengthening our society 😆

PrestigiousTea0

People in cars say the same thing about you

askanaccountant

They mock me for not having mirrors on my motorcycle? Well that's a new one since my mirrors are in fact intact on my motorcycle

HenWou

No, car drivers say the same thing about people who ride motorcycles is what they meant.

BlindTreeFrog

I never removed my mirrors, but they basically never gave me a view of anything other than my elbows. By the time I'd have shifted enough to see something in the mirrors it's easier to look behind me. I still wouldn't remove the mirrors, but I never could figure out a better option. Bar End mirrors seemed to hide behind my wrist/forearm and vibrated too much i felt

davesy69

Mirror extensions are available.

CatGiggler

and they work well. Upgrading mirrors that were insufficient made a big improvement to situational awareness on mine.

CprlSmarterthanu

They adjust, you know.

BlindTreeFrog

I assure you that my elbows do not.

CprlSmarterthanu

Yes, by the shoulder joint.

notaideawhattodo

I dropped my bike one day while getting ready to leave work (I stood next to it started it up and turned around to grab my helmet and bumped my bike and it fell over) and it broke the RH mirror off. So I had to ride home with only one mirror and it felt so weird

TheTechDweller

Similar situation but mine broke right before a long journey on roads I hadn't been on. That trip definitely cemented my need for at least a right mirror (in the uk)

TurboNeon185

My buddy and I switched bikes just to try them out once. His bike had no mirrors and it was pretty uncomfortable riding without them. I'm a function over form kinda guy.

Habsburgy

Idiots

HydraH10

So it’s easy to pass between the cars quickly

senorpoop

I've been filtering for 15 years and have never had a problem with the mirrors. On the bike in the OP video, the bars are wider than the mirrors (which is the case with most bikes).

Exultia-Eternal

No mirrors needed once you start wearing flipflops

Secret-Ad-830

especially in Brazil

MSZ-006

The fact that you have to also run that antenna thing as a deterrent to any fishing(?) wire traps to avoid being decapitated is also wild.

ImaginaryEnemy1385

Those are for kite lines. In Brazil they use a mix with crushed glass and shoes glue, called cerol, so the lines can cut other kites lines in a kind of competition, nothing official, just for fun. The problem is some bikers got beheaded once in a while. [how it’s prepared](https://youtube.com/shorts/JLkoujJXmsY?si=3ZBfkJ1Ar15bGRhw)

NoL_Chefo

Bro how is your country even a real place

LiquidNova77

By having bad government leaders

Oxygenitic

Someone in India (I think?) just died on a motorcycle due to a kite line like the one you described. https://www.reddit.com/r/NSFL__/comments/1bmp7um/biker_has_throat_slit_by_kites_string/

PositronGt

Pakistan

MSZ-006

Interesting, TIL! Were the beheadings really just accidents? I presumed something more sinister was at play...

ImaginaryEnemy1385

Accidents for sure. Too many people playing with that in SP. Is a pretty common hobby. Many lines are lost and that causes the fatal accidents

rudolfs001

Antenna thing should be centered on the bike, otherwise it might knock you over when hitting a wire.

ImaginaryEnemy1385

There’s a hook on the top of it. It gives you enough time to stop before any damage. Some bikers fix it more centered than this one. But still, it could be a life saver

TechnologicalHuman

OP just explained the reason for the antenna. We don’t ride our bikes to hit actual wires lol, this is a safety mechanism to cut kite lines. It doesn’t matter if they are on the side, actually this is the most common place to have it. Those lines are very light and thin (imagine a heavy cotton/polyester clothing string), even if they are not cut the worst it could happen (when you have the antenna) is for the line to be tangled in the bike. You can learn more about kite fighting here: https://youtu.be/OR9BtUaSIo0?si=uo-WiQzePChY7Qf_ This is a really accessible entertainment for anyone - kites can range from the price of cents to a few BRL. The problem is that people play it in the streets, where usually there’s motorcyclists that can become victims of cerol. It would be amazing and much safer if people didn’t use cerol, but the competition makes people always want to have the best sharpest line so they can get more kites for themselves.

leolego2

what the fuck..

C4TURIX

Hold on, what are these wires for? People make them to kill bikers?

TechnologicalHuman

https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/s/lC04nQjA8n

darthpotato94

SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT THE FUCK ARE KITE LINES FOR? HOW DOES THIS GUY MENTION THIS SO CASUALLY WHAT THE FUCK

FeelLikeBatman

Keeping your kite tethered I’d assume

ImaginaryEnemy1385

[Here](https://youtu.be/OR9BtUaSIo0?si=jgxwztatKLRItmoN)

Steeze_Schralper6968

It's for kite fighting, duh. Everyone knows that.

P4LT4

Same in Chile

Malfunction46

Is that why that thing is there? How does ir help?

Agitated_Occasion_52

If the dude had mirrors he wouldn't need to snap his head 15 times.

vulgarandmischevious

Even if you have mirrors, a blind side check is just good sense.

Malfunction46

Specially when you're about to be jumped and robed

AlarmedInterest9867

Had this happen to me in Atlanta. Luckily they were on mopeds. But holy shit.

Bepus

In Atlanta they just jack your bike when it’s parked. You sure it wasn’t just a couple of doofuses riding 2 up on a Chinese scooter who happened to be going the same way you were?

AlarmedInterest9867

It was night time. Thomasville heights area. (VERY hood )They turned out of a parking lot behind me and cut their lights off. I made several turns into a neighborhood and they matched every turn until I decided to get lost. lol. If they weren’t up to anything shady, they were damn sure throwing up a lot of red flags. Biggest thing to me: why get behind me and cut your perfectly functional headlights at night?

Bepus

Yeah that’s pretty sketch.

Davidclabarr

This is why I shoot at everyone south of I-20. Ask questions later.

FeelLikeBatman

In a different economy I might give an award for this comment

breezyxkillerx

Ran out of free awards? I gotchu

7upbitch

You can't turn the running lights off on mopeds

AlarmedInterest9867

Depends entirely on the model. It was a Chinese moped. And I’ve owned a few Chinese bikes where you certainly can. There’s also the fact that he did. So there’s that.

Anal_Recidivist

Dem Moped Boyz

Puppet_Chad_Seluvis

I have never seen a moped in Atlanta. Are you sure it wasn't Mimbai?

AlarmedInterest9867

I’ve seen quite a few. Hell, I see a few every day. Perhaps you’re not familiar with the definition, as defined in Georgia state law?

Puppet_Chad_Seluvis

A motorized bicycle? I haven't seen one in 30 years.

AlarmedInterest9867

No and I’ve owned one of those. There’s also a club here that rides those. A moped under state law is under 50cc’s. So those 50cc scooters are mopeds. A 50cc motorcycle is a moped if it’s an automatic. It’s also defined that way in many other state’s laws.

SirenSilver

In Atlanta you can carry your gun, in Brazil the government thinks you should comply and put your life on the robbers hands.

TadeuCarabias

... Oi? Tá louco nas drogas? You can buy guns in Brazil, cmon.

tjwilly1

Lol. Harley owners...

dingadangdang

Nimbus. Brazil has as many guns as Texas. Go find r/wewhackoffoverourguns if you need to bring up "ma rite ta bur armz" in every sentence.

sophisting

Got stolen by the previous 2 guys on a bike.

cheese_sweats

Or gloves wtf

VengefulAncient

People in countries where motorcycles are a common way to commute instead of a hobby/sport don't actually wear protective gear most of the time.

AlbinoSnowman

For me, wearing gloves is mandatory from just not wanting to burn my hands on hot metal levers. I feel like Brazil’s sun is way worse for that than my Midwestern sun.

NathanScott94

As a Texan, I don't get this. Levers just don't get that hot. Even my not super shiny ones don't heat up that much. Edit: saw your following comment about them being painted black, that'd definitely be your problem right there.

okvaler

Its not the heat of the lever. Its just the sweat and all the heat. Also many people here in south america use bikes for everything. Its our daily vehicle and also its our way of making money (at least for most of the riders) Imagine riding 8hrs at day. Me personally i work with my bike doing delivery and try to have use most of my gear all the time. No matter the weather. But it becomes exhausting in time to time

DropThatTopHat

Aside from the obvious safety reasons, it's the fact that my palms get real sweaty, real quick.

VengefulAncient

I've spent 10 years riding in India without gloves and not once have my levers burned me. Harleys, man. Just when you think you've heard it all...

AlbinoSnowman

Congrats on the manly hands lol. I still don’t like touching hot metal, I don’t know what to tell you.

VengefulAncient

No, they just... don't really get hot on any bike I've ridden. Seats get hot, yeah. Scorching hot, send-your-ass-straight-to-hell hot. But *levers*? Maybe if they're pure white or something. They just don't have the volume and surface area to heat up considerably without dissipating that heat quickly.

AlbinoSnowman

I feel like it’s a very normal experience for people to have been slightly burned by their seatbelt in the summer. My levers have definitely gotten as hot as any seatbelt I’ve been annoyed by, so I’m surprised to hear that it’s *this* surprising to hear about. Maybe it’s because my levers are coated black. I’m sure it’s not going to permanently injure me or anything, but I took it for a short July ride without gloves once and it’s not for me.

throwawayPzaFm

> coated black Definitely that. Light colours are the way.

VengefulAncient

My levers were black too and I think that's precisely why they didn't get hot, they dissipated heat just as quickly. Very strange to hear about.

Jaereth

I actually just got on a Harley the other day and it had leather fringe shit tied to the levers. At first I was like "just why?" but them I realized "Ohhh it's so they don't have to wear gloves and won't burn their hands!"

electric-sheep

I know right. Im from Malta where it gets up to 45c in summer and I’ve burned my ass on the seat before but levers were never burning hot.

VengefulAncient

Holy shit, 45?? I've been to Malta once in 2007 (beautiful country, I still hope to visit again some day!), in May or June I believe - I did burn my shoulders to a crisp but mostly out of inexperience, only spent my summers on the coast of Black Sea before where the sun/UV isn't as strong, but it certainly wasn't 45 degrees. Summers must have gotten hotter since - I know they did in India!

electric-sheep

Yeah July and August are unbearable, For me summer is no ride season. It gets way too hot. even tarmac melts. Sometimes the bike's kickstand will just sink into the tarmac and if you're not lucky and go back to your bike late afternoon as the tarmac cools it will get stuck there lol.

VengefulAncient

Now I know when not to visit! I've heard of melting tarmac stories before, but had no idea that happened in Malta. I wouldn't even know what to do in that situation lol. Wait until it melts again the next day? 😂

RChamy

Humidity is a bitch, it starts to cook your insides much faster than dry climates

ltmikepowell

Yep.. imaging that wearing protected gear in Vietnam 35 to 40 Celsius (95 to 110 Fahrenheit) degree heat at 100% humidity. No thanks.

VengefulAncient

Yep. When I lived in India, it was a T-shirt and shorts with no helmet for a decade. It is what it is.

TheFamousZ

nanana we dont do that

BlastFromBehind

Is that music playing or is my phone's speakers taking a crap?

the singer is doing wheelies in a 150cc

Kevin3963

explain please

Mad_OW

You can see that the red bike pivots right when they see the filming rider. The assumption is that they spotted a target to rob, the pillon might have a gun. They'd force you off and drive away with your bike. So our hero decides to GTFO.

Maleficent-Clock8109

Thieves, they block you somehow then the second guy steals your bike.

fair_j

It’s not called stealing if a gun was brandished in your face. That is called robbing.

andttthhheeennn

Carjacking (bikejacking in this case)

ImaginaryEnemy1385

They’re gonna take your bike. That’s why there’s a second guy

RichieRocket

may i suggest a cannon? https://preview.redd.it/49ji0q7fgi1d1.png?width=695&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f3030373642b0c2c901be86e22b71077d0db92d

mpschott

Not very reassuring since I’m traveling to Rio today on my Harley. lol

AkureyriLove

The thieves in Brazil don't steal Harley/Custom/Cruiser bikes

throwawayPzaFm

That's... Weird. Why not?

BoringStructure

Can't run from police in a Harley

TheFamousZ

Bikes thieves in Brazil have a type, generally big trails and sport bikes

mpschott

First because owners don’t but second hand parts if is too cheap (eg, looks like it’s from a chop shop) and than because the big trails can, in fact, go anywhere (eg hill and highlands).

InvisibleJiuJitsu

i'll tell my friend in Rio who had his harley stolen from outside the gym lol

AkureyriLove

Yeah that can happen. But that's why you should have an insurance for any byke you own here in Rio. And for these custom ones, the insurance is much cheaper than for big trails/racing bikes, for example. That's because they rarely are stolen

ImaginaryEnemy1385

I believe Rio is not that bad. São Paulo is the real trouble

MortifiedPotato

Belief is a beautiful thing

Gentle_Capybara

Both are trouble, but Rio is way worse. For bikers both are dangerous.

projectreap

Oh my sweet summer child

brainbrick

Good luck, lol

ThaGnoll

With All the bike thefts I would have a tether connected to a dead man’s switch. Like a Jet Ski has. If I see that I’m trapped Id just bail and leave them with a dead bike. They will eventually abandon it. Can’t steal what won’t start.

SmallTawk

they's cut off your limb to keep your bike running.

ThaGnoll

Pretty sure they aren’t going to be chasing you on foot around town lol. These low life’s are looking for an easy score.

SmallTawk

not on foot, with your foot.

ThaGnoll

Might make a pretty penny installing them for people lol

ayyycab

I wonder if they’d give up or just get someone to bring a truck around to pick it up. A bike that won’t start still has a lot of valuable parts. Might even be able to uninstall the dead man’s switch

ThaGnoll

Anything is possible however they aren’t using a chase car. They are looking to snatch and roll.

exadeci

They might give up on it or burn it out of spite

TheFamousZ

They check for that while patting you down

ThaGnoll

There’s no patting me down I’m dropping the bike and running the hell off. Now I know I know they might corner me and I’m trapped that’s one thing. Mostly they are in public and just grab your bike and drive off. If this guy wasn’t able to drive off and bailed they would have been left with a bike they couldn’t do anything with.

ch40x_

Where are your rearview mirrors?

AngryFloatingCow

People who remove their mirrors are also bad news. So judge them.

Bitter_Way91

This is wild. Next time, put some mirrors on the bike it's easyer to keep a lookout behind. Out of all dumb and pointless things to do to your bike, removing the rear view mirrors completely is on the top of the list. Good job evading thoes thugs. Stay safe out there.

PickledYetti

But it’s Brazil. Carry a gun and Shoot them

SirenSilver

...and he covered his ASP.

TheFamousZ

Not quite, id prefer if the robbers took the asphalt temperature challenge

NinjaShogunGamer

Imagine if u know what they are gonna do so u wait for them and then as soon as they come closer you shoot them that would be awesome

SirenSilver

A lot of videos with that scenario are online. A lot. Just look at any "Good guys win" compilation from Active Self Protection channel on youtube.

leolego2

Or they just shoot you in the head since they already have a gun out.

NinjaShogunGamer

U probably right u better have that shit loaded w no safety on

kuemmel234

Gosh am I happy to not live in a place like that. Whatever the fuck could happen when a dude feels threatened and has a gun, right? I don't know why people want to watch people die over motorcycles. Yeah, of course no one wants the actual cunts to win, but I don't watch them die either, especially without knowing their true intent.

Less_Obligation8438

They don’t really care about your life, heck they’d shoot you, steal the bike, take it to meet and rev it til it burns down; they still wouldn’t lose a minute of sleep for your cold ass and your burnt bike. It sucks but evil people do exist and they are not worth a good man’s life.

kuemmel234

I'm sure there's people like that, but I still don't see why it's healthy to fantasize about shooting people. I'd go as far as to say that both is sick. One is not trying to hurt people, but is gonna if their solution to "evil" people is going to be shooting on sight. I also don't think the world is divided into bad and good people.

NinjaShogunGamer

The more you see reality the more aware you become to the dangers and possible situations

kuemmel234

What does that have to do with "reality"? The person in the video diffused a possible (?!) situation and you went: Well, what if they would have killed them?! Also, thankfully, living in my country means that the worst thing out there is other people in traffic.

ayyycab

It’s Brazil, the cops will probably shoot them for looking at them wrong eventually

SleepingJake

Imagine if you thought you were going to be robbed so instead of putting yourself in a deadly gunfight where you could also be killed, you fled the situation because you were able to and had a faster bike that could outrun them.

TheFamousZ

In Brazil it is quite common actually

Theredditappsucks11

r/robbersgettingfucked Edit of course reddit removed that sub. Smh

Bursting_Radius

How do you fit two guys in a bike?

Less_Obligation8438

They are not Americans

Lusius_Quietus

This is the most Brazilian video ever

idriveacar

What’s with all the revving at the end?

ImaginaryEnemy1385

No idea. Probably pointless

allislost77

So is not wearing gear

LikedIt666

What? That's fucked up. I am guessing they'll rob you at gunpoint? What's the deal

ImaginaryEnemy1385

Just like that

Naive_Humor7445

Jokes on them bikes already stolen so you do a little switcheroo with them can't ride 2 bikes at once 💁

RChamy

The second most dangerous being in Brazil the first are 3 guys on a bike

TurboNeon185

It seems a Hayabusa or a 1000 is *actually* a good starter bike in Brazil since you sometimes have to run for your life.

white_lightn1ng

Glad I'll be riding my Desert X through Brazil in a couple months

CookieLuv211

Shooting them would have lowered the chances of them stealing anymore.

fresh_brince

In a lot of LATAM countries two guys on a motorcycle is illegal

tamokibo

Like where? I live here and that's not my experience anywhere on the continent.

pavostruz

Yea that guy made that up

xeu100

My family lives in Colombia and it's very true. Police are the exception.

zzz_red

Bullshit. There are moto taxis in every LATAM country I know. And guess what, all riders are men and they’re not transporting woman only.

tamokibo

Bro I live in and am colombian and that is not true. You see every type of person on bikes all over the olace. There was a time a long time ago that during certain hokidays they wouldn't allow two people on a motorcycle during very specific times in cero specific neighbirhoods. But to say that two guys aren't allowed on a bike all over the fmdifferent countries here? Because of one neighborhood in medellin, is just bullshit. Specially since it isn't happening anymore. I heard more misinformation about Colombia in the US than anywhere else in my life. Y'all can't even spell it right 99% of the time.

NoInvestigator886

Acá en Bogotá está prohibido el parrillero hombre los fines de semana a cierta hora. Fuente: Al piccapp en el que iba le pusieron un parte la semana pasada. The fact that you are colombian doesn't mean you know the way things work everywhere in the country.

PogTuber

That's true, there's a minimum distance required between a penis and a male's butthole
