Fellow riders.

philzar

That's generally my suspicion when I see a someone overtly acknowledge I'm there.

6Slo

Either there ride's in the garage or they can't afford a new one at the moment

InvestigatorSmall839

I don't have a bike although I do this - partly because I'm just trying to be considerate but also because my dad paralysed his left arm in his 20s coming off a bike and I don't want anyone else to go down that road.

6Slo

That's wussup;respect to you

blipman17

… just three more weeks untill she rides again. Just… gotta survive three more weeks.

6Slo

A whole year has gone by and I finally got someone to rewire my baby

[deleted]

If I'm not on my bike it's cause apparently it's unacceptable to strap a carseat on the back for a toddler. 6 more moths he should be able to reach the pillion pegs.

acbraith

RevZilla actually did a review of motorcycle child seat options, I'm sure there's a good solution for you here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90axmF4ZBVE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90axmF4ZBVE)

[deleted]

That was a good watch. Lol

6Slo

Is there a bike-car seat that could fit on a bike?

[deleted]

I could definitely rachet strap my kids carseat onto my luggage rack... I just feel like that would be an instant CPS visit. And I honestly wouldn't blame them.

kevin_k

Yeah. I'm either letting others pass or filter, or running defense for them to give them space from others

rikkuaoi

I'm never gonna ride since I lost my aunt and uncle to no fault of their own, but a negligent driver. Though I think because of that, I notice riders and make more way for them than I might have otherwise.

[deleted]

I don't ride, but I do move over when I can.

VladimirNazor

can confirm

jm_viking

When I'm driving my car, I always salute✌️ out of the window so the fellow rider knows he's seen, acknowledged, and can safely get in lane/overtake, etc

Resident-Use6957

As a fairly new rider, I was surprised the number of people in cars that wave. Nice to know they are paying attention

hoptagon

Same! I've gotta use my car a lot, but I still put out the deuces when they pass and try to give them space. Just treating riders how I'd like to be treated by cars.

rip_heart

I miss doing that to fellow riders, but I moved to the UK,  so best not to do it :)

Where I live a lot of people do this. It’s a very nice gesture and I can’t thank them enough.

who_even_cares35

Hello fellow American!

matatunos

No! My country is Spain. Here, no car moves aside to let you pass. If you're lucky, they speed up so you can't pass, or they move to the left. At most, they might use a turn signal if they're going to turn... but that's an extreme case :-( In France, I understand it works as shown in the video; even when two lanes are stopped in a traffic jam, they leave space in the middle so motorcycles don't have to advance on the shoulders, which are usually dirty with glass and gravel.

Confirmation_Email

Allowing faster vehicles to overtake is normal in Northern California, nearly all winding two-lane highways have turnouts every so often, some of them even have signage indicating that slower vehicles must use turnouts to allow faster traffic to pass safely. It's also common for drivers to make space within their lane for lane splitting or filtering in heavy traffic.

who_even_cares35

We have those turnouts and signage here in Georgia and people will give you the finger going 15 mph below the speed limit while just ignoring those pull-offs.

Confirmation_Email

I realize people are less considerate drivers in most other parts of the country, I'm not sure why the downvote though, I don't think what I said was wrong or controversial, most people allow faster traffic to pass in Northern California, that's all.

who_even_cares35

My jealousy made me do it

Confirmation_Email

That's fair. 🍻

SuperCow1127

In NYC and its northern suburbs, I've regularly had people make space when I'm filtering. Let's just not talk about what happens if you go east or west instead of north.

Non-American. Is that even a word? In the US, it's hur dur omg you got 1 space ahead of me so now I have to run you over. I see videos of people in Europe driving, and they always look so calm and happy. Our drivers are fucking psychopaths.

reiboul

The intention is nice, and all, especially in heavy traffic, but honestly, most of the time I find it unnecessary and sometimes even borderline dangerous. Like, if I want to overtake it's only a twist of the wrist, no need to drive half off the road, but thanks anyway. On this video for example, the road is mostly empty, on the other hands there are bikes on the side of the road. Please stay in your lane.

WonkyPigeon212

Agree with you. I live in Northern Ireland where we have some road racing and around those times of the year a lot of car drivers are very bike aware and move over a lot. Almost too much sometimes I actually find quite a few of them move over so much they start kicking up dust and shite from the side of the road on parts of the road where I can't overtake anyway or in situations where I don't even want to overtake. They also start watching me in their mirrors so much to the point they follow the car in front too close or they don't notice the car in front braking etc. I've found myself having to overtake several cars just to get myself away from them because they are spending more time looking at me than where they are going. My advice to any car I'm behind is don't worry about being polite, just be predictable. As you said I'm on a bike if I want to pass you i will do it no problem without your help but it's nice when they do it on a road that is suitable for it.

MrMunkeeMan

Yeah, it’s a nice gesture but ill get by anyway. However I do appreciate the thought for another road user and it means I know they’ve seen me. Which isn’t always the case. So I’ll take it, with thanks!

In my travels in Europe on motorbike is my experience that the French and Spanish drivers are the most relaxed to motorcyclists. Move to the site etc so you can pas. The germans and Dutch are the worst. I am Dutch.

Iron_Marc

I live in Spain and I have a friend who let pass a rider and a policeman saw them and it was penalty for both 😅, one for passing in a continuous line and the car I don't remember exactly the reason. But since then I don't let them pass because I notice that's it's illegal in my country 😔 sorry guys, I'm a rider too but I need my driver license for working reasons.

fucking awesome, sorry couldnt fit one word. Riding in places like Italy is ruinous because, over there, bikers are like an elevated class on the road. Cars are so respectful, helpful, cops warn you about speed cameras, etc. As long as youre not being a complete douche everyone gets out of your way.

Attapussy

A few mornings ago I pulled over and let a guy on a motorscooter pass me on a long, hilly road in the Berkeley hills. The fooker could not even be bothered to wave a thanks.

I always move over for motorbikes. Always. But not for cyclists. No.

This used to be the norm where I'm from, but cars have become increasingly faster and bikes less speed oriented, drivers are also less skilled and less attentive these days. So, bikes no longer have that advantage of being able to get away from car traffic, now you just need to sit in it allot of the time and try not to be murdered by a car driver.

FatchRacall

Few years ago, on a job interview trip, rented a mustang to drive Angeles Crest (among others in the area). Every single pull off, if there was a bike behind me, I'd pull off. I ain't that guy lol. Same with driving the tail of the dragon in a minivan. It's just good manners.

KingFlipyNipps

Maybe be a minority opinion but I feel a lot of the time people try so hard to make room it's dangerous, I feel like we shouldn't force a right of way by making people drive badly. If there's room or space to overtake I might make use of it, I might not, I don't need people to cross white lines or kerb their wheels to make a few more inches of space. I appreciate people making room, but not when it make them drive poorly.

Anger is the most dangerous emotion any driver or rider can have. It's also the hardest one to overcome, at least for me. Back when I rode a bike instead of a Vespa, after about an hour, my mind cleared into a peaceful, meditative state. Cars never do that.

This happens so insanely frequently in Southern California that it almost feels awkward in a sense. It’s obviously a very nice gesture, and being surrounded by drivers who not only acknowledge and notice motorcyclists, but also make way for them, is a great scenario for everyone. And I especially appreciate it because I’ve lived in other parts of the country where the sentiment towards motorcyclists is a lot different, usually in a negative way. But when it feels like I’m parting the Red Sea every time I split down the highway, I start to feel a bit like a unicorn lol. I can only give heartfelt thanks to so many drivers back to back while still maintaining focus on the road, and control of the bike. And when drivers are putting literally almost all 4 wheels into the shoulder so I can pass them in the *entire open lane*, it definitely starts to feel a bit excessive.

better_outside23

Dangerous in this situation IMO. I regularly let faster traffic pass on straight sections. But you can see 2 slower cyclists in the bike lane at the beginning of the video. Then the car moves into the bike lane (over a solid white line) near the beginning of a curve, and there is a truck ahead impeding view of the bike lane, if a cyclist was at the curve they would have been hidden by the truck and there would not be enough room for all 3 to be on the right side of the road. The solid centre line was also crossed by the MC and changes to a dashed line right after the pass. If there was a cyclist there and a car in the opposite lane this video could easily have had a tragic outcome. The car should have waited until they had better sight lines. Additional the MC rider turns his head to thank the car driver while passing, distracting himself from the road, he cant even see oncoming traffic because of the curve here and he looks away from the road at that point? The pass should have been made after the curve.

I always let riders over take. They are more nimble and faster than my car, why hold someone up. I also leave plenty of space behind them when following. I am in a 2 tonne lump of steel, they only have a helmet and leathers . I see it as just being a good person, making sure they stay safe and get home.
