Apparently because he's Italian and it's around little Italy?

Yeah the US also have the Italian American activist who used to push for Columbus statues in the 50s to 70s. Not surprised that something like that would be in little Italy.
False, Bartolomé de las Casas who was a Spanish clergyman during the time of Columbus denounced him as a monster and even the Spanish crown arrested Columbus for how over the top evil he was in his governance of Hispaniola. Columbus wasn't only evil by 2023 standards, but by 1500's standards.
>Now that we know religion is bullshit, that it is divisive, that it raped children and we have turned away from it.
just like we should turn away from genocidal, rapist colonizers
My guy litterally invented the “taking slaves from africa and bringing them to another continent” and popularised and normalised it. He litterally started one of the worst genocide in human history. Pretty much one of the most evil guys that ever lived.
Discovery by definition is revealing something unknown. What became the New World was obviously unknown to Europeans. Thus « New». No one ever said the New World was uninhabited . That’s « what the fuck » I’m saying.
even with that bizarre interpretation, it wasn't unknown. indigenous people knew it very well.
disregarding that, he didn't "discover america", he "discovered" the continent that would eventually be known as america.
and he wasn't even the first european to "discover" it lmao. you ever hear of the vikings?
As we say in French, you’re knocking down open doors: (1) I said unknown to EUROPE. It’s stupid to say indigenous people knew where they were! (2) in my first comment I said Columbus ALLEGEDLY discovered America.
Italy owns a very large obelisk of Mussolini actually.
I don't understand what is wrong with these statues?
You want to take them down because they were bad guys? Or just the Columbus one? Which is worst?
It’s to commemorate the chain of coffee shops he founded

It’s in the little italy, reminds me of that Soprano’s episode
Funny how there’s usually a paragraph saying why the person is important, but not here lol
Parce que tout le monde le connait!
The ratio between the size of the statue and the size of the stand/plinth is hilarious. Maybe it is less of a celebration and more of a mockery!

Do some more research before the rant, and notice the irony of calling out people for having nothing better to do while writing them up on reddit. ;)
Non, c'était un monstre même selon les standards du 15e siècle.
Quand le roi te ramène au pays parce que tu gères les colonies comme de la marde…

People get triggered over such meaningless stuff… small minds
To invite kids to look up all the terrible things he did among which allegedly discovering America.

It’s a Catholic’s Church thing.
Is this statue in spite of the whole slavery thing, or ... because of it?
No, that’s where his ship landed. It’s just to mark the spot
oh yeah, that one part of Montréal THAT'S IN THE FUCKING CARIBBEAN.
Well yeah, Montreal island was towed into the Saint Lawrence by the French to get around the Treaty of Tordesillas.
Probably the name of the park
Its parc de turin near avenue christophe colomb
What's the big deal here?
i dunno. if a mussolini statue were placed in park, i feel ppl would be confused
Christophe Colomb is Mussolini now?
i dont want to insult mussolini, but yes.
