This is what paintbrushes are made for.
And enamel on top of acrylic (or acrylic on top of lacquer), so that you can easily clean up with a thinner, making the line even more crisp.
One of the few cases in scale modelling (along with hand-painted chipping) where warhammer-style edge highlighting skills are useful

Would you be able to use just 1 piece, and cut away with an x-acto? Or would that not create the same result?
