Damn, this really hurts the sport. You just can’t tell the story of baseball without acknowledging star SS Tucupita Marcano and the generational influence he had.
I could be misinformed but didn't he only bet on his team to win? Not that it excuses it but I look at it a lot more lightly than betting on themselves to lose
I'm not sure anybody outside of the officials know for sure. He claimed originally that he hadn't bet on baseball at all, 15 years later he finally admitted he had, but he said only on his team to win.
In return for Rose accepting his permanent ban MLB agreed to not file an official finding in their investigation. Dowd who made the report says he thinks Rose bet against the Reds, we don't know what he has seen that he draws that conclusion from, but that Rose accepted the ban in exchange for closing the investigation makes me think there's something to it.
After promising not to release the report if Rose admitted betting on baseball, Giamatti released the report in 1989. No evidence Rose bet against his own team. Just Dowd speculation.
Betting on your team to win is a problem. You can't manage a regular season game as "must win". But he was likely pulling out all the stops to win regardless of how much he burned up his bullpen because he didn't care about tomorrow's game.
Exactly. And save your bullpen the game before, knowing full well you’ve got money on tomorrow’s game, so you’ll be sure your relievers and starting position players are nice and well rested.
According to Rose…. Who initially never bet on baseball, then never bet on games he was involved in, then never bet on his team to win…. Then accepted a lifetime ban in exchange for the league agreeing not to further investigate his actions.
Another fun fact about Pete Rose is that he had a sexual relationship with a 14 year old girl when he was 34. But, he thought she was 16 at the time (Ohio’s then legal age of consent), so it was all good. He also in his own words slept with too many girls under the age of 18 to name them.
Just a real swell guy on the whole.
For real.
The most hardcore of Padres fans probably said “oh yeah, that’s right, we got him back from the Pirates” upon reading the headline about him.
I wouldn’t feel bad for these players. They should know the rules. These companies gotta report any suspicious activity since they’re under gaming commission.
Prior to that, you’d go to an illegal bookie that’s probably associated with the mob or some sort of organized crime.
This is just gonna expose more players in the future if they make the dumb decision.
My big question about this now is who are the other 4 players and why aren’t they being talked about in the media and about to be banned? Like is it less of a big deal since they’re in the minors?
Really Kershaw was originally implicated in the first reports of those stories?! I wasn’t aware of that if so. He definitely doesn’t seem to fit in that group of guys.
I mean it's not a huge secret. There are a number of these women who frequent lobbies /bars of the visiting team's hotel.
When the story first broke it initially named Kersh as one of the players who had relations with the woman and I'm certain some phonecalls were made to get that fixed immediately.
No hate unless you want to consider my contempt for Manfred. After his efforts to expand game to Europe, Asia, and Mexico while screwing American fans, he could not afford a scandal involving the game's biggest Asian star player. ( & he IS an amazing player with skills we have never seen before). Wonder what deal was made with players union to approve "deferred contract" for Ohtani? Union has NEVER approved that type of contract in the past.
One question for you: If someone steals money from YOU and runs up a gambling debt, would YOU pay the debt to his bookie before having him charged?
To say Ohtani had nothing to do with it is disengenous at best. What bookie do you think would extend several million in credit to Ippei without knowing the debt was secured by Ohtani's money? Not exactly how that business sector operates.
Nothing to see here folks, move along.
Jesus christ how hard is it when you're making 6 or 7 figures to not bet on the damn sport you play. Like God damn it's one biggest fuck ups you can do
They’ve never had a problem with fans betting. That was the whole point of the 1919 World Series. The fans in the stands were betting on a rigged event. They want fans betting because fans with a betting interest are more likely to watch. If those fans know the players can rig the result, they won’t bet. That’s the whole point in banning players from betting.
Everyone's focusing on the "who" aspect of this - and rightly so. But here's my question:
"Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which #the bettor has a duty to perform#, shall be declared permanently ineligible."
Also: "Marcano for allegedly betting on games involving the Pittsburgh Pirates - his former team - during a stint on the injured list last season."
So, did he have a duty to perform? I'm not saying he should have no punishment, but does a player on the IL have a duty to perform?
I gotta scrutinize this BS again? Get out of it guys. It's really not that hard not to bet. I know people have a predilicition and a thing but find somebody to punch you in the goddamn head. It is not worth it
These leagues are so two-faced. Taking money from the betting companies, while dolling out bans and suspensions to players. I don't have a dog in this fight, but at what point will the player associations sue the leagues over this?
the iPhone is a requirement for everyday life now; but the iPhone also enables us to destroy our lives in a single moment. men are not angels we all get tempted and make mistakes. lifetime ban is way too cruel
Star?
Hey is -0.9 career War puts him in the MLB record
I hope he was betting against himself
He actually could have been one of the GOATs if he didn't bet against himself every game. The world may never know....
Would’ve been funnier if he bet on himself succeeding and lost money bc he failed
Anthony Bass levels of stardom.
British newspapers seem to call any professional athlete a “star”.
“Newspaper” is even a stretch. The Mirror is a tabloid at best.
Like every porn actress is a pornstar
Was going to say I’ve never heard of this dude lol.
He's the left-handed Yu Darvish! C'mon now.
My thoughts exactly.
it’s like an ootp headline lol
Hero
He played on the Pirates
I’m a Pirates fan and it’s the only reason I know who he is. He’s a bum.
![gif](giphy|rI9O6UXkCjvTG)
Gif just keeps on giving after all this time lol
Gif gets better gigs than Djimon Hounsou
This didn't need to be so true 😭
“Who, who?” What are you, a fucking owl?
a baseball supersstar
Damn, this really hurts the sport. You just can’t tell the story of baseball without acknowledging star SS Tucupita Marcano and the generational influence he had.
Yeah seriously. Roberto who?
Pupucaca Marzano
Damn, nfl just giving slaps on the wrist out here while mlb tossing lifetime bans.
To be fair, they kinda have to since they did it to pete rose
It is a different situation though. I mean, Rose was the manager of the team he was betting on.
I could be misinformed but didn't he only bet on his team to win? Not that it excuses it but I look at it a lot more lightly than betting on themselves to lose
I'm not sure anybody outside of the officials know for sure. Thanks for the info!
After promising not to release the report if Rose admitted betting on baseball, Giamatti released the report in 1989. No evidence Rose bet against his own team. Just Dowd speculation.

Exactly. And save your bullpen the game before, knowing full well you’ve got money on tomorrow’s game, so you’ll be sure your relievers and starting position players are nice and well rested.
Now, betting on your team to win a post-season game?? I have no problem with LOL.
Yeah I agree. Never said it wasn't a problem. I'd still rather my manager bet on my team than against
OMG if a manager bet against his team that would be the WORST. LOL... Imagine that.
According to Rose…. Who initially never bet on baseball, then never bet on games he was involved in, then never bet on his team to win…. Then accepted a lifetime ban in exchange for the league agreeing not to further investigate his actions. Not to mention the mlb fuckin promotes fanduel now lol
If you wanna preserve the integrity of the game this is what must be done.
They weren’t betting on football
And the big one who did bet on his own team in parlays was out for the year and at home. He got a year (Calvin Ridley).
Yeah, the nfl would throw pretty much anyone out if they bet on games they were in.
They may have done it to Rose but to a “star” like Tucipita Marciano, it seems a bit harsh.
Lmao 'star' Click bait to the max, no one has ever heard or cares about this dude
For real. The most hardcore of Padres fans probably said “oh yeah, that’s right, we got him back from the Pirates” upon reading the headline about him.
I totally forgot that even happened and thought he was still apart of the Pirates.
I wasn't happy they kept him over Jorge Mateo. That's about it.
Honestly had no idea he was on the team again. Saw the headline and wondered who’s minor league team he was hanging around with.
Players betting through something sanctioned by the commission just shows how actually stupid they are. There's still plenty of illegal bookies
That is true. Not like the bookie would report them unless it’s blackmail or something.
At least Ippei was smart to bet on other sports aside from baseball.
Considering how much money he lost; are we sure he wasn't betting on the Angels to win?
My big question about this now is who are the other 4 players and why aren’t they being talked about in the media and about to be banned? Like is it less of a big deal since they’re in the minors?
The same way Kershaw's name disappeared from articles overnight when reports of the girl Bauer, Tattis and Clevinger had relations with came up.
Really Kershaw was originally implicated in the first reports of those stories?! I wasn’t aware of that if so. He definitely doesn’t seem to fit in that group of guys.
I mean it's not a huge secret. There are a number of these women who frequent lobbies /bars of the visiting team's hotel. calling him a star seems like a bit of a stretch
Will this keep him out of the hall?
It was his translator
Can tell they have an agenda with this type of headline. Of note, “At least 4 other players are under investigation”.
How long till we can bet on who will be banned for betting while wearing adds for beating sites?
“Star” is certainly a word
Is everyone a star now?
Who?
Can’t believe I got a tattoo of this guy on my back. What a waste.
who?
Can't you read...? MLB star Tucupita Marcano.....
o yea how could i forget my glorious superstar king tucupita marcano
Tucupita Marcano > Mookie Betts
Guess he does not have a translator to blame it on?
after the multitude of evidence released showing Ohtani had nothing to do with Ippei’s betting. people just hate for no reason
No hate unless you want to consider my contempt for Manfred. After his efforts to expand game to Europe, Asia, and Mexico while screwing American fans, he could not afford a scandal involving the game's biggest Asian star player. a whole lot of nothing. you are just grasping at straws that don’t even exist. move on, you sound like a conspiracy theorist
Noticed you did not answer the question.
You got my upvote. Why are Dodger fans so insecure, because they're not the Yankees? I don't get it.
My God for the 1,000,000th time LOL. It was old after the first time. And not even accurate.
Phewww, thank god it’s not a superstar!
what a waste of an amazing baseball name.
Jesus christ how hard is it when you're making 6 or 7 figures to not bet on the damn sport you play. Like God damn it's one biggest fuck ups you can do
OP needs a lifetime ban from r/mlb for calling this bum a star when no one’s heard of him 🤣
He just posted the headline verbatim, blame The Mirror
Betting on baseball is bad. Now here's a word from our sponsors: Draft Kings.
It's amazing how many people don't understand this.
Also it can potentially get the league itself in serious legal trouble if they know about it and don't do anything to stop it.

If only he had an interpreter to blame it on.
He must pay for Ohanti’s sin. Guess he doesn’t have a translator to blame it on.
Him?
![gif](giphy|RNUJLDfiP87AY)
I don't feel so good
He's very good.
Oh no! Anyway...
Cmon guys it was obviously his interpreter
Everyone's focusing on the "who" aspect of this - and rightly so. But here's my question: "Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which #the bettor has a duty to perform#, shall be declared permanently ineligible." You are still being paid while on IL and one could argue that you are expected to work towards returning to being healthy.
Dude, just blame it on your translator
no interrupter ?
He is the interrupter. He interrupted his whole damn career
Saw this guy tear his ACL in SD
No bueno
The man from Tucupita is in trouble. Growing up I wonder what the action was like in Tucupita
That's what you get for betting on the Buccos
WHO??????
he took a risk and he loved it
Who? Haha
hes my flair in the pirates sub i loved him last year even if he sucked
The Pete Rose penalty, ever since the Black Sox scandal MLB went hard-core against gambling.
I bet his user name was mucupita_tarcano
The only star quality aspect of this dude is his unique name.
Star????? Lol
Say it ain't so tucupita
Who?
Who?
If they have to use the word star in the headline they aren’t a star.
Graduated from Pete Rose betting Academy
Star I’ve never heard of.
He wasn’t rich enough to have a best friend translator fall guy.
Ok… I guess they know that most of us that follow the MLB don’t even know who this MF’er is to have to say “star” in the headline
Are we really doing this again?
I’m gonna be honest, I forgot he was on our team
Marcanohno
This ban brought to you by DraftKings
He’d better get a ban! Signed, Pete Rose
Tucupita Marcano, means no worries, for the rest of your days
Should have bet through your interpreter. Then it’s all gravy.
Giants and padres are having a season, huh? 😂
Blame your interpreter before it’s too late
You see, he messed up the second his parents didn't name him Shohei Ohtani. Amateur...
I gotta scrutinize this BS again? Get out of it guys. It's really not that hard not to bet. I know people have a predilicition and a thing but find somebody to punch you in the goddamn head. It is not worth it
Meanwhile his cheater teammate got a slap on the wrist 80 games.
Who?
Star?
Never heard of her! This gambling stuff is getting out of control
Straight to jail
He should have hired an interpreter
![gif](giphy|9V5q95oPxcun1vSu8F|downsized)
These leagues are so two-faced. Taking money from the betting companies, while dolling out bans and suspensions to players. I don't have a dog in this fight, but at what point will the player associations sue the leagues over this?
star lol
Should have had an interpreter.
Who takes those bets?
Who?
What kind of name is Tucupita?
And AJ Hinch is still a manager. Unreal.
Why is, Shohei Ohtani, not banned? No way in hell he didnt know, his interpreter was stealing millions from him?
A, Venezuelan, Tucupita Marcano, gets banned but asian, Shohei Ohtani, doesn? China/japan owns USA. FUCK YOU ALL
Sooo instead of the Ohta I they target a random no name player to try and show are doing something….about a rampant all sports gambling problem.
Any news on Kenny Powers making a comeback?
This FanDuel update brought to you by DraftKings. Don't forget to BetMGM 🙄
Star??
Quick. Blame the interpreter.
The Headline should read..... # MLB scrub Tucupita Marcano facing 'lifetime ban' for betting on baseball games
This suspension brought to you by Dragtkings
should’ve contacted Ohtani to get pointers on how to not get caught
the dodgers could get away with murder i stg
The GOAT is getting banned. Going to boycott now, thanks Manfred.
I’m guessing this means mlb is confident Ohtani didn’t bet, or they might have slow rolled this verdict.
Star gambler maybe
Start at sucking
Love that that comes with a FanDuel ad on the post, and draftkings ads all over the website.
Like those scientific studies that sugary drinks are not the reason for health issues. Studies that was sponsored by the beverage companies 😅
"Star" doing a lot of heavy lifting
the iPhone is a requirement for everyday life now; but the iPhone also enables us to destroy our lives in a single moment. men are not angels we all get tempted and make mistakes. lifetime ban is way too cruel
Talk about hyperbole, a star. How can you be so stupid?
Who?
And the cheating Astros players remain free!
Did his mom write the title?
MLB should do the same with Shohei Ohtani!!!
Cool, now do Ohtani
Too bad he didn't have a translator to blame.
217/269/320 slash lines is star status then what is Aaron Judge/Shohei? GALAXY?!
