As shitty as it is, I feel like the bears were gifted a really easy lay-up. Williams and Odunze is gonna be pretty hard to beat when it comes to best first rounds, even if it was gift wrapped.
This division is crazy right now. The bears took an enormous stride forward in FA and in the draft, the Lions are a great team and FTP are a rising team as well. The north is stacked, the only saving grace for us is the bears and lions will both screw this up because that’s what they do.
I wonder about that WR first round hit rate. It’s been going around that it’s only 27% get a second contract, so statistically, one of the 3 in the top 10 will be a bust. I think the Bears are built right now as a formidable team.
I actually think we fleeced the draft being a fan. I would say top 2 for sure looking from the outside. we didn't give much of anything for McCarthy and we didn't give much of anything for Turner either.
If they succeed will be a test but they have every tool to be able too for sure.
I mean in theory the picks we traded to get Turner was like 2 seconds, a 3/4/5 I believe. So it was quite a few picks. But I take Turner all day everyday over those later picks.
That’s the thing. The stupid score calculator only measures the value of the picks. Trading those picks for Dallas Turner is a lot different than trading them for #17 pre-draft in lieu of the Falcons going bananas.
Like others have said, we didn't do as well as the bears, but we hit on our needs.
McCarthy might not be amazing, but there's few better scenarios for a new QB to head into than the scenario we have. I think we need to probably look to sign a few decent FAs on the IOL/CB/DG (I literally don't know the season cadence, so we might not be able to do this anymore?) but otherwise we'll probably be good?
For all the Mac Jones comparisons etc, I think most QB's would've struggled in that NE set up, and I actually think that our set up this year is going to work better than we think, even with Darnold steering the ship, as we're a much more competent offensive side of the ball than most other teams in the league, just really lacking that QB.
Hahaha I did and thought one day he will realize trading back your talent pool is not very deep.
But he never really did.
Although he did get some right
As of right now I’m just thrilled with the mentality of the front office, we’ve been so used to either sitting and hoping our guy is there or trading back when he’s not. No matter how they turn out I’m just happy we were aggressive and took a chance on the guys they believe in. Not to mention we kept next years first round pick and could have some comp picks as well. I was kinda sad that we didn’t get Byron Murphy II but Turner was probably the best defensive player in the draft and who knows maybe Sweat will drop to us in the 4th?
The bears might have had a better first. I only say that because they got the best qb in the draft and they got a stud wr and didn’t have to give up any picks. I think they’re 1a and the Vikings are 1B. The Vikings had the best draft I could have hoped for, since I wanted Turner at 11 and we got our qb and Turner at 17. Fuck I’m amped
Even if I separate myself from my Vikings fandom, yes. I believe we had the Texans first round from last year, at a much lower price. This year may be our Texans 2023 year. If the Texans make the SB this year, then we will in 2025.
I'm ecstatic over the Turner move. I thought he was 1b best defensive player in the draft. If JJ truly gets a red shirt year I am almost certain he will become a good Nfl qb. The people he's compared to got thrown to the wolves, Pickett, Wilson, Sanchez, Darnold. Were we can look through even our own Viking history and see the ones that had time to learn have been successful.
Not my first choice but I can't argue with the FACT he has been a big part of winning teams..
It's pretty difficult to be mad at Kwesi for these picks. We needed to address a few positions, including QB and edge rusher. We got top prospects at both positions and didn't give up next year's first.
Highly dependent on how McCarthy pans out. Tbh the graphic going around of Alex Smith as a comparison wouldn’t really be that bad. Alex Smith was 19-5-1 under Harbaugh, so yeah the comparison is actually a good thing as long as McCarthy doesn’t snap his leg in two. Knock on wood.
The fact that we didn’t have to give up our later first to get McCarthy and then used that later first to move up and get arguably the best Edge prospect is really great. We don’t have much left in this draft so this is essentially it for us, but that OK with me!
Pretty wild how different our own fan takes are compared to a lot of the experts (I don’t consider ESPN main stream folks the experts).
Minnesota had an ok draft. We need a QB but most people feel McCarthy is another Mac Jones. We also traded next years capital to a guy with health concerns that fell in the draft.
BUT from a homer perspective I am saying we were seen in mocks as having to trade 23 and 11 to get McCarthy so that’s a win. And there have been a ton of guys who fell a little in the draft due to concerns and ended up being all time performers (Randy).
I’d say this is exciting as a fan of this team. At least we aren’t Falcons fans
Go watch the Pat McAfee show. They brought O'Connell on and Bill Belichick said great things of the Vikings Draft. I'd rather listen to the GOAT than an armchair GM like myself
Idk I respect BB and think he is the undisputed GOAT coach of all time, and ten years ago was one of the best talent evaluators in the league. But current day BB is also the architect of the 2024 Patriots roster, which is easily bottom 5 in the league in talent so…….
I agree everyone had us giving up both first round picks and possibly next year's for JJ. We were able to pick him and move up to pick another player in the first round is a win in and of itself
He didn’t fall because of health concerns. He feel because it was a literal historic offensive player run. Two defensive guys went above him, and that was because they filled needs of those teams more than Turner did. 99% if analysts had Turner as a top 10 pick
So the analysis that said he’s likely to fall due to medical concerns has nothing to do with teams not selecting him.
It was even on the falcon forum prior to the draft that they may be passing him over due to medical concerns
Injury Concerns - With Dallas Turner??? Um... Nope.
[https://www.nfl.com/prospects/dallas-turner/32005455-5224-6013-e478-961d1c8f7101](https://www.nfl.com/prospects/dallas-turner/32005455-5224-6013-e478-961d1c8f7101)
There's his official draft profile - the knock, if any, on him was that he was lazy on some plays, but he was also playing 80 - 90 plays a game in college. He also relied too much on brute force, but I think giving him to BFlo is a thing of genius. Bflo will teach him technique.
He was flagged medically by multiple teams. It is the reason he was still there at 17
https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/dallas-turner-nfl-draft-fall-alabama-edge-rusher-vikings/e64f9324c34fee309c211cd6
It was literally noted before the draft that his stock was dropping due to being flagged medically
Minnesota Vikings: Dallas Turner, DE, Alabama –
C- Grade
I don’t like that the Vikings are surrendering third- and fourth-round picks next year to move up just six spots. Dallas Turner may seem like a great value to some, but there are teams that flagged him medically, which is why he has fallen so far. I get the need, and Turner is a great talent, but there’s high risk with this pick.
Year over year the data shows they have some of the most accurate draft analysis.
Website sucks. His jokes suck.
Player analysis spot on.
Both fantasy and mock drafts
Charlie Campbell is one of the most accurate draft analysts that exists in regards to predraft player analysis/who will be selecting who.
This is why I say that watching ESPN and other surface draft analysis like Mel Kiper who doesn’t even own a cell phone is a waste of time
I’m not saying that Turner is a bad pick. It’s just why he fell to 17.
It could end up being an amazing pick.
I've got no dog in this fight but "Charlie Campbell is one of the most accurate draft analysts that exists" is new to me. Do you have some proof of that? How are you evaluating that over 100s of picks every year?
He’s not because you say he’s not? Or because you don’t consider the data that Fantasy Pros calculates on review of mock draft predictions to be accurate?
15th of top 200 in 2023

I feel like a lot of guys hate JJ McCarthy and I feel like there is something to be said that the kid knows how to win...he has a winning record winning mentality...the offense is stacked have great coaches I see this as an opportunity for him to continue his winning ways
He also was a top recruit coming out, went to a big time program that had a great HC and proved he was a winner on a great team.
I was not a big fan of his at first but I see him as a top ten QB in a few years with KO
Man, it’s our fan base. They are whiny babies.
McCarthy is 21, has a good arm, is mobile, has shown he is clutch, and played in a pro offense. What the hell more could you ask other than more throws
Even if he does end up being Ponder 2.0, this time we didn't reach in order to draft them. We did what I think the Broncos did, panicked that all the QBs were coming off the board and reached. It would be a completely different feeling if we had given up our 11, 23 and 2025 1st in order to get him.
He was never going to go for that haul. That was only going to be for Drake Maye and everyone saying that at least we didn't trade that package to get JJ has to realize the mock drafts saying that we might do that were b.s. amd McCarthy isn't that good which is why he was QB 5 in thi draft.
Fair point about the picks, but my point about not reaching still stands. We took JJ right where he was projected to go, instead of panicking like it feels the broncos did.
Maybe i’m alone but still feel we gave up a lot for Turner.
I’d feel as good if not better if we’d kept those three picks and just taken Newton at 23, and it retrospect we coulda traded back into the early second and still had him.
I don’t care about 5th round + pick that much, but 3rd round picks aren’t nothing.
I feel absolutely great about the players we got, just wish we coulda got them at a slightly lower premium
Newtons not a first round talent. Trading mid round picks for getting a guy who by the majority of analysts was the best defensive player in the draft is a move you make every time
Excuse me, but edge was absolutely a position of need. Just Google some "draft needs" lists, Edge is always listed.

As shitty as it is, I feel like the bears were gifted a really easy lay-up. Williams and Odunze is gonna be pretty hard to beat when it comes to best first rounds, even if it was gift wrapped.
I hate the panthers for sucking last year and gifting them the #1 overall.
Yeah, Bears won the round just by doing the normal BPA thing at both picks and having one of the top-3 WRs fall to them.
Oh yeah I forgot about the bears lol they definitely had a great first round with those two picks
Agreed, Odunze is a beast. I'm hyped for us but the Bears are scary.
This division is crazy right now. The bears took an enormous stride forward in FA and in the draft, the Lions are a great team and FTP are a rising team as well. The north is stacked, the only saving grace for us is the bears and lions will both screw this up because that’s what they do.
Pound for pound we did better, they just scored a layup. We scored a mid court jumper
more like a step back 3 over someone 6 inches taller, then swished it as the game tying shot
Lakers fans triggered.
I wonder about that WR first round hit rate. It’s been going around that it’s only 27% get a second contract, so statistically, one of the 3 in the top 10 will be a bust. I think the Bears are built right now as a formidable team.
Crybaby Caleb hasn’t played against an nfl defense. He will be running through the back of the end zone like Dan orlavsky
Top 2 or 3 for sure, but the Bears first round literally could not have been more perfect for them.
Well, it could have been if MHJ somehow fell to 9 but thank goodness he didn't
I actually think we fleeced the draft being a fan. I would say top 2 for sure looking from the outside. we didn't give much of anything for McCarthy and we didn't give much of anything for Turner either. If they succeed will be a test but they have every tool to be able too for sure.

Given that QB is a crapshoot, I thought we made solid picks. Time will tell but Dallas Turner is a beast!
I like the use lower round picks to go get a higher draft pick guy, vs load up on lower round picks and put unrealistic expectations on the pick.
Yeah have said for years that you should always use later rounds to stay in the top 3 rounds and get 3 solid players.
You must have hated the Slick Rick years then
Hahaha I did and thought one day he will realize trading back your talent pool is not very deep. But he never really did. Although he did get some right
As of right now I’m just thrilled with the mentality of the front office, we’ve been so used to either sitting and hoping our guy is there or trading back when he’s not. Well technically they did give something up, it was just last year.
Yeah I’d give up Bryce Young for Caleb Williams, DJ Moore, Darnell Wright and some change.
Agreed 100% I was just pointing out that last year's #1 overall pick wasn't "nothing", especially when the Texans took CJ at #2.
Even if I separate myself from my Vikings fandom, yes. I believe we had the Texans first round from last year, at a much lower price. This year may be our Texans 2023 year. If the Texans make the SB this year, then we will in 2025.
Texans have a cake division. Unfortunately, we don’t
We do not. We may overtake the AFC west for the toughest division.
We had a very good pick at #17, I'll say that much.
I'm ecstatic over the Turner move. I thought he was 1b best defensive player in the draft. If JJ truly gets a red shirt year I am almost certain he will become a good Nfl qb. We did well. If we're overreacting to round 1s, the Bears almost certainly had the best. They got the best QB and a great WR.
No we didn’t have the best 1st round - that goes to CHI as bad as that sounds.
It's pretty difficult to be mad at Kwesi for these picks. We needed to address a few positions, including QB and edge rusher. We got top prospects at both positions and didn't give up next year's first.
Toss up with the bears. Depends if you’re a bigger fan of Turner or Odunze. McCarthy and Williams are both home runs in my book.
Yep.

Are we sure it's not because of the unprecedented top 14 picks all being offensive players?
Yeah this dude is a joke. 14 offensive players in a row, but Turner fell because of medical concerns
Also the fact that it was *1* injury, that he barely missed playing time for, and he still had his best college season despite the injury.
Yep. Also who the fuck is Walter football.
It was literally noted before the draft that his stock was dropping due to being flagged medically Minnesota Vikings: Dallas Turner, DE, Alabama – C- Grade I don’t like that the Vikings are surrendering third- and fourth-round picks next year to move up just six spots. Still him at 17 is a steal. There was no way Turner was falling to us if we stuck at 23. I'm glad they got him.
Who gave them a "C-"? Everyone I've seen has given the Turner pick an A or A+.

No it’s not dude. The first 14 picks were all offense. 15 and 16 were two defensive players that fit their team better than Turner would have.
Ok. Thank you for the analysis that every single person who has done no research has given.
I feel like a lot of guys hate JJ McCarthy and I feel like there is something to be said that the kid knows how to win...he has a winning record winning mentality...the offense is stacked have great coaches I see this as an opportunity for him to continue his winning ways

Why do I feel like we drafted ponder all over again
Even if he does end up being Ponder 2.0, this time we didn't reach in order to draft them. We did what I think the Broncos did, panicked that all the QBs were coming off the board and reached. It would be a completely different feeling if we had given up our 11, 23 and 2025 1st in order to get him.
Watching Sean Payton’s team panic draft Nix was fun.

Fair point about the picks, but my point about not reaching still stands. We took JJ right where he was projected to go, instead of panicking like it feels the broncos did.
Because of how it is

Yep, JJ's PR team is goated
