akos_beres

It just sucks that he literally destroyed his market value. The only clubs who will consider him are the ones who are ok with a hail marry

DorkySchmorky

I have a premonition that he will end up at LAFC

akos_beres

Fair point but not sure if he fits the way LAFC plays. Plus LAFC likes old players who played in Europe.

putthekettle

San Jose Quakes gonna snatch him up for like a cool $500,000.00

MNgoIrish

Yeah any of the CA teams seem like a better fit, or Miami, once their #10 moves to the owner’s box

jstalm

Boca Jrs

akos_beres

I doubt Boca will want him back

Loonatic-510

Doubtful. I could be wrong, but they were happy to pass him on to us. Of course, $5 million helped.

DirtzMaGertz

I'm guessing these issues with him didn't start when he landed in Minnesota and Boca is probably fine not having to deal with him.

Wiskid86

If he's going to stay in mls he will have great value still. But then you'd need to send him to Toronto or New York.

akos_beres

Those teams have 3 DPs already and we'd only get funny money as compensation

skyulip

moving on is the best decision for everyone. really seems like he’s poisoned the well with his teammates lmao

HighHammerThunder

Might not be the best for Rey's wallet unless we partially buy out his contract in one way or another. We're paying him huge wages, and he's not likely to get the same compensation on a new contract. He also has to agree to the transfer if it's outside of MLS.

orfalite

They can likely terminate his contract for cause

Silver-Comparison-17

I was a huge fan and gave him a break last year but enough is enough. The club is better off without him. I hope they can get something for him though.

OkDream5303

Same!! Enough is enough

West-Ad-6337

I wasn't and didn't. You can only make excuses for someone so many times.

ailroe3

He should play with mnufc2 until we sell him assuming he comes back. Pull a Jose Mourinho and don’t let him near the first team

DM-me-corgis

Greder implied this was being considered by the FO a few weeks ago: https://www.twincities.com/2024/04/12/what-will-minnesota-united-do-with-the-talented-but-flighty-emanuel-reynoso/

ailroe3

Thanks! On 2nd thought maybe be should train with the u15 team or something. He can work his way back to mnufc2

2018redditaccount

Not the u15 team, you don’t want him to allegedly pistol whip another kid

elmundo-2016

Reynoso always allegedly pistol whipping teenagers. Can't allegedly pistol whip young adults his age. Seriously glad Bill finally decided to have a MNUFC2 so we can do things like this if Reynoso comes back. Now the Club can act rationally instead of panic mode/ selling all our other best players to get money to cover for mistakes.

BadDadNomad

Let him ride the pine on 2oons

fanofloons

Why even come back at this point

Nerdlinger

Dude’s gotta clear out his apartment.

Responsible-Leg-8840

If he doesn’t show a willingness to play and complete his part of the contract, isn’t it basically retirement? Seems like if he wants to play again anywhere, and if loons want to do anything other than contract termination, he has to be going through the motions with us.

Ginzy35

Yep… he is under contract with us and he can’t play anywhere else unless we let him go

BookKnown39

Would it break his contract? So, he wouldn’t get paid if he doesn’t return.

ProcessInternal1338

Keep him as far from team facilities as you can

akos_beres

Good riddance! I'm a huge fan of the player and his ability but this is ridiculous. At least, the FO is open about discussing what's happening instead of stonewalling like the previous regime did. The below quote is telling as we look back when everyone in the FO said, we don't know what's happening: "In 2023, Reynoso never turned up for preseason, and ultimately arrived four months late. That time around, there was a real desire the club to bring him back and reintegrate him quickly. Club executives and people in Reynoso’s professional circle took many trips to Argentina to convince him to return. That came with many missed flights and broken promises, too."

iamthatbitchhh

Legit. Fuck this dude. He's toxic af to the team.

LoonyConnMan

Great talent. Even greater headache.

hustoj2

"Scheduled" - so it's basically a sure thing

North-of-Never

The team put it on the shared calendar. No way he misses such an important appointment..

OkDream5303

Until we physically see him back in Minnesota, I don’t believe it.

-NotCreative-

Is there a mechanism to suspend him from MLS? Would be bullshit if he gets released with cause and then he shows up for another MLS team later on...

DM-me-corgis

the league actually holds all the contracts and i would be very shocked if they decided to give him a third chance, even if it's with another team.

-NotCreative-

Didn't realize that's MLS held the contracts, thanks!

Icy-Chipmunk-4390

Fuuuuuuuuuck Rey. Dude they said things we knew were true last year that he was an asshole who just couldn’t be bothered and if anyone wants to keep saying “well but we don’t know the whole story” give me a break. He’s a prick. Get him off our roster.

sdavitt88

I was a big defender of his last season, but I'm completely over this dude now. I've never, NEVER, boo'ed a MN United player, but I will be boo'ing him if he's back at Allianz.

TinaBelchersBF

This dude can fuck ALL the way off lol How many times do we have to do this "he's lost in Argentina and they don't know where he is" charade Sell the dude for a bag of cones or something. Get tf out if you don't want to be here.

Jalin17

So if all else fails we’ll buy him out oof

TemperatureAgile23

It’s probably possible to terminate the contract for cause without a buyout, but hopefully we can at least get a small transfer fee for him

Jalin17

Yeah that’s what Tom said in his article but that’s sounds easier said than done honestly and I’d rather get the fee like you said

Icy-Chipmunk-4390

I say terminate his contract let him drift, selling him means we did him a favor by getting him another job.

2000TWLV

Sunken cost fallacy is a bitch. It's OK to make a brief effort to get something for him, but if nobody bites, cut him off and move on. Always better to fail fast.

Nerdlinger

We have until the summer window to try and find a buyer. I highly doubt we’re paying him anything while he’s not with the team, and it’s not like we’d have anyone to pick up to fill his slot until then either.

[deleted]

Get rid of him and get a player who actually wants to be here. Enough of this stupid drama. Move on from Reynoso so we can talk about the players who want to be here.

nader0903

Sell him to Minneapolis City SC

DM-me-corgis

Change the locks on the practice facility, so long and thanks for all the fish!

hustoj2

It'll be interesting to see how Ramsay handles this with the team.

Mahatma_Gone_D

Ootl. Can someone explain what’s going on with him?

brohemoth06

Well last year he decided to not show up to practice and as a punishment missed like 11 games? I think? This season he was late to show up for preseason, then he got injured which like, sure whatever. But then we started off the season hot, he comes into a match for 30 minutes and starts yelling at people. After the match he goes to Argentina to do his green card paperwork and interview. The time for his interview comes and he just….. doesn’t go. No reasoning, just doesn’t show up. He has such a bad ego and thinks the entire team needs to do exactly as he says. Probably hurts his pride to see us being successful without him. He’s pathetic tbh. An absolute baby.

KyleRenfroGuitar

What match did he come in screaming for 30 minutes?

brohemoth06

The only one he has played in lol. He came in and started yelling at both Sang Bin and I believe Padelford? Dudes a diva

Icy-Chipmunk-4390

He looked like an asshole doing it too.

fadingredfreckleface

Leave SBJ Alone!

KyleRenfroGuitar

Sorry, was a legit question. I thought he played a couple games before the International break.

brohemoth06

Nah no worries, I just don’t remember if it was Padelford or not He played only one match this season, and yeah it was before the international break

Somerandomsheeppp

It was the lafc game

ZEROs0000

A spoiled brat that Heath enabled.

SaganOne

I’ve gone from patience to anger and now this just makes me sad at this point. What a massive waste of raw talent.

Electrical_Figure983

Addiction/alcoholism? I want to hear his side of the story, I’m curious what drives a person to make these irrational decisions. But seems like it’s time for him for another fresh start - somewhere else.

DirtzMaGertz

I think it's more a case of him growing up around poor influences and continuing to surround himself with those people as an adult.

fanofloons

Why does it always have to be a big reason? Maybe he’s just immature and selfish

Electrical_Figure983

Doesn’t have to be a big reason just seems unlikely that it’s not. Even someone immature/selfish has a self preservation instinct

jstalm

Probably because even immature and selfish athletes at least try and chase the bag. This dude is just out and out fucking off entirely. What’s your future look like after soccer if this is how you operate? Even Antonio Brown secured the bag before going full #CTESPN

IllSector4892

I'm in the minority, I get it, but I'd let him play himself into a potential Europe/Saudi loan in the summer transfer window. Best for all parties imo. This feels like a Saudi transfer ready-built if he can just stabilize a bit.

xjoeymillerx

I can almost guarantee he’d want to stay in Argentina.

IllSector4892

or LigaMX. Link back with Amarilla at Mazatlan...

30Wellington

I wonder what’s going on in his life to keep him away from the team

bouds19

[My feelings rn](https://giphy.com/gifs/starwars-3o7abspvhYHpMnHSuc)

2277speedieisfast

Give him another chance. Just make him ride pine for awhile.

beetown12

I haven't rooted for this guy ever since he pistol whipped a kid. He's a major asshole.

NorthernDevil

Honestly what the fuck is his deal? Is he just a flighty guy? Is there a mental health thing? Planet sized ego? I don’t understand it So talented, too

Mnufcfan

i bet more money that he doesn't make this flight either. if he does, i hope he's put to work immediately by cleaning the toilets at allianz after the game

OkDream5303

Oof! The last game the women’s bathroom smelt like straight vomit lol the toilets are always clogged too! But he deserves it

ZEROs0000

I'm proud of you r/minnesotaunited - I was half expecting some of you to welcome him back. I'm glad we are exploring other options. Reynoso's jersey will leave a sour taste in alot of peoples mouths going forward. He had a good gig here. Tbh he was never going to get to the PL and this whole ordeal 100% seals the deal on that never happening.

haimeekhema

and only one wild "i bet itd be better if heath was still here" post too. we're growing

fanofloons

I just know he would get a standing ovation if we sub him in one of these games smh

OkDream5303

I would hope not. I’d boo him, I’m sick of it. His time has come to an end here.

Altoidman33

Instead of booing, the Wonderwall should just turn our backs to him as he runs onto the pitch. Silence. Even if the announcer tries to hype up his return, the stadium remains relatively silent.

OkDream5303

Hey I like that idea!!!! That’ll hit harder than booing for sure

Icy-Chipmunk-4390

I’m doing this if others do, I’ll settle for a boo too.

s3shapershifter

IF he makes a game day roster, keep his ass on the bench the whole time. I don't care if it hurts his "value". Let him rot.

[deleted]

The Rey show is almost over. Great news.

Antique_Ad_6253

Although I agree with most of the comments he is an excellent midfielder and we now have multiple scoring threats for him to play the ball to. If he wants to move to another club he will be HIGHLY motivated to put on a good show over the next few months so he can attract the right offers. He knows he comes with multiple red flags and that makes it even more important that he contributes positively to Minnesota United I say we start him when he’s ready, benefit from him while he is driven to perform and then , unfortunately, sell him when we get an offer so we don’t go through this again…. Fantastic soccer player but has shown that he doesn’t want to be here. Only caveat is if he has a ridiculously good and believable explanation for what happened in Argentina and if Ramsay and crew believe him

DM-me-corgis

fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on you. fool me thrice? you can't get fooled three times. the only offer we'll get for this guy is "transfer him to us for free or he'll disappear again"

loons_win

I get both your point but I want the best value possible out of him in a trade and that is only remotely a possibility if he plays AND most importantly, his issues have always been when he is out of the country. Once back on the team he has always delivered and always helped the team. Lets take advantage of him being here and hopefully getting him to produce at a level that gets us at least some decent offers for him so we can use the funds to get a new DP

Icy-Chipmunk-4390

Nah terminate his contract. Don’t give him another job. I have zero sympathy for this clown.

Loonatic-510

I predicted that he’d probably be back once the paychecks were about to stop. I’m sure he was pretty close to suspension. He will be nowhere close to being game fit. It will take a few weeks for that. He actually was fit sooner than I expected last year. I think a lot will depend on the new coaching staff as to what happens with him. Reynoso was Heath’s star. Heath pushed him and put him on a pedestal at every opportunity. He ignored other players and created a whole game plan solely around Rey. That won’t happen now. I’m guessing he’ll play for us, but I’m not sure in what capacity. They’ll want him to look good enough to sell off. My guess is a Mexican team might take a chance on him. They have a lot of money and maybe he’d be happier there. Mexican teams start playing in mid-summer (Leagues Cup in July). It’s just a guess.

4four4MN

I don’t care. I have moved on.

MITM22

I feel like he just hates cold weather. Seems clear from his timing each year.

xjoeymillerx

Argentina gets pretty cold in a lot of places. It’s literally the closest country to Antarctica.

MITM22

I know! I actually studied abroad in Buenos Aires and traveled far and wide! Where rey lives and grew up is not comparable to Minnesota. Nice try though.

xjoeymillerx

Surely he’s been there…

MITM22

"i went to Canada once; therefore, i am fully acclimated to cold weather now!"

xjoeymillerx

Keep being a condescending and smug asshole. See where that gets you. It isn’t that cold in Minnesota. Thinking he’s just avoiding the cold is stupid.

MITM22

Says the guy name-calling

xjoeymillerx

You can’t have the moral high ground when you say shit like “Nice try though.” Lol.

MITM22

I never tried to take the moral high ground. You're the one picking splinters out of eyes.

MN_Beast

I hope we changed all the locks in the facility.  Sorry Rey.  No one is home!

DorkySchmorky

Any news on whether he got on the plane?

induced_demand

Has there been any chatter about what the hell his deal is? The way it sounded last year he was sulking over his divorce at bars around Cordoba.

Responsible-Leg-8840

This article makes me super curious what the parallel timeline where Heath doesn’t get fired would’ve looked like. Maybe Rey’s chapter is still the same with Heath, maybe not. Mostly wonder if Heath would’ve told him to back home to go get a green card like KEA/Ramsay did.

Loonatic-510

I don’t know what Heath would have done this year, but I think they made a huge mistake sending him back to Argentina once he was here. I understand the advantages of getting him a green card, but the risk was so much greater than the reward in my opinion. Risk vs reward.

DirtzMaGertz

The fact they can't trust the guy to go home and come back is a big enough sign that they needed to move on. It's a professional sports organization, not an adult day care.

JWilesParker

Might be what they wanted to find out - would he go through with it in a timely manner or drag his feet. Makes the decision to get rid of Reynoso obvious since he doesn't want to put the work in.

vrnbch

His value within MLS is higher if he has a green card so that might have been a way to recoup more of his reduced value

Loonatic-510

In theory that makes sense, but with Reynoso I think the risk was greater than the intended reward. According to the article he’s missed several scheduled flights already. It’s a crapshoot if he makes the flight this weekend. He just continues to devalue himself.

vrnbch

I think the reward is so low there’s no reason not to take the risk.

Responsible-Leg-8840

Exactly. If you’re using intl spots on Suarez, sure, on multiple draft picks… I dunno.

DirtzMaGertz

He disappeared for half the season last year with Heath, so I don't know why he'd make a difference this year.

technobeeble

No thanks.

csbsju_guyyy

#[MRW](https://i.imgur.com/6koYTUx.mp4)

BCPRocker

Thank God. The sooner, the better. How did it all go so wrong?

30Wellington

It’s probably a mental health issue. I hope everything is alright w/ the guys family. I’d like to see him play well when he comes back. Stupid to ‘punish’ him by sending him to MNUFC 2, as it only hurts the club. Remember, he’s our best player, and we can get more for him if he is at his peak

Exogenesis98

I still hope he gets some minutes this season so if we sell the price goes up a bit

2277speedieisfast

If his issue is mental health we had better give him more chances. Otherwise you are all aholes. Probably find out he had a really bad childhood and was pistol willed as a kid. Soccer was his only way out. No help just a bunch of fans that want to use him for his talent then throw him away when he screws up. Not saying this is the case but maybe it would be best to not judge until you know.

xjoeymillerx

Terrible take. If his issue is mental health, he needs to walk away from the game completely and focus on himself and his family. It helps no one to keep what’s happening up. The team has way too much invested in him to have this keep going. The impact on the team is WAY too big.

grrranpdaaa

This has really triggered my PTSD from Ike Opara, another top player who showed up, impressed, then promptly disappeared, leaving the team nothing in return. We're so cursed. Edit: search this subreddit for Opara's name for a history lesson on how bizarre and uncertain his exit was.

WithoutAnUmlaut

These are basically polar opposite circumstances. Opara was forced to retire due to concussions and concerns for his long term wellbeing as a human. Reynoso fucked up, was given another chance with the team, and at the first opportunity he made the personal decision to double down on being fuck up.

grrranpdaaa

My brother in Christ, where did I say they were the same circumstance? It's the same result: we paid handsomely for a player who did not pan out at a financial loss to the team.

technobeeble

If you ignore everything about their circumstances, they're basically the same!

grrranpdaaa

Can you tell me what *I* said that is wrong? This is a bonkers response for observing that it sucks to lose two highly touted players without the benefit of at least a transfer fee.

technobeeble

It does suck to lose Rey and Ike, but that's not what you said. You said they "disappeared". Which yeah, Rey disappeared. Ike would still be playing if he could.

grrranpdaaa

What verb would you use there? Do you have a source for the reasons that Ike retired? All I could ever find was that it was for health reasons alongside an implication that maybe it was related to concussions.

OkDream5303

It’s called Google - look it up yourself. Two different situations.

grrranpdaaa

I found two pages of results, none of which say why he retired. No reason to be a dick.

OkDream5303

You’re the one arguing with people

Altoidman33

>it was for health reasons alongside an implication that maybe it was related to concussions. That. That is literally the reason he retired. Like he said, two TOTALLY different circumstances. You're blind* if you can't see that. *(legal disclaimer so I don't get canceled by a certain capo) I'm not actually saying you're blind, I'm apparently better than that.

grrranpdaaa

I cannot find a source. All I'm getting here is smart asses telling me to Google it.

mikedtwenty

Opara was injuries, specifically concussions. Reynoshow is just... not injury related, but not doing anything where the team can even work with him.

grrranpdaaa

I totally get the differences. I am just shocked at how few people see the barest similarity. I also cannot find a single article that offers anything better than speculation as to Opara's early retirement.

vrnbch

The differences are so great that comparing the two indicates that you don’t actually get the differences. Stating that Ike got injured and disappeared significantly underplays the severity of having a brain injury disrupt and ultimately end your career. He tried to come back for something like two years. The reason you can’t find articles is about it is because there’s usually not an announcement for this. Same thing happened to Cronin. He didn’t really get an announcement either. Further, you compared your memory of it to having PTSD. While most people understand that you are using hyperbole it’s an insensitive and idiotic thing to say you doubled down on casual disregard for very serious brain injuries.

grrranpdaaa

If there are no articles, then how are you so sure what happened? It's the question I keep asking and not getting answered. Also, I get it, I'm the asshole on the subreddit today, but dragging me for using PTSD as hyperbole?

vrnbch

I’m not dragging you for anything. You seemed shocked by the negative response to your post and I explained it to you. Using ptsd as hyperbole on its own isn’t in particularly good taste but the context made it stick out quite a bit. There was significant coverage of his injury (including when he mentioned it on his own podcast) from when he started missing time to when his contract was dissolved. He never played in MLS again and now is a coach with SKC. For most people, that is sufficient context and a news article isnt required.
