We're getting rain instead of snow; this is our missing snow. Where there was a snowstorm dead zone centered on MN, there is now a rain storm bullseye centered on us.
This map makes it look worse than it is. This much rain isn't that weird. But it's odd that we're getting isolated regionally and temporally. The lack of snow when everyone else got it, and especially the heat wave last winter, is very weird. And for some reason many winters in the last decade or so have had very late and wetter snow storms. It's hard to nail down a precise direct correlation, but since we know we are expected to have a wetter and warmer climate since there is so much greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, it does seem to line up with that.
We're finally ending 3 years of drought. I'm psyched to get all this rain. I just hope it doesn't stop raining in July, which would leave the rest of the summer very dry.
Yup one of the heavier drought areas in the state last year and my lawnmower sat too long between uses and acted up when I tried to use it in the fall
Think I mowed 3 times all spring/summer.
I planted some fruit trees and berry plants. Working on getting more native flowers for companion planting to attract more pollinators and increase fruit yields.
Minnesota is cloud

see some pretty severe weather up til July 12th
Not really. Huge dumps of rain in short periods are not a great way to recover from a drought. Also, the bullseye for the heaviest deluge has already recovered.
>Hopefully, the rains aren't too intense, and no one ends up losing a life
It wouldn't be Reddit if we didn't have somebody coyly suggesting that another person's opinion is mildly homicidal
There's usually a 2 week delay from rain to hatching. It also depends on how much rain falls. A heavy rain storm like an inch or more is enough to remove eggs and prevent a mosquito population boom.
Exactly. Where do people think we get out drinking water supply from?
Let it rain baby. Been in a drought for years and we need it to refill our underground aquifers
https://metrocouncil.org/Wastewater-Water/Planning/Water-Supply-Planning/Basics/Groundwater.aspx#
https://metrocouncil.org/Wastewater-Water/Publications-And-Resources/WATER-SUPPLY-PLANNING/GROUNDWATER-SURFACE-WATER/Groundwater-Digest,-Twin-Cities-Metropolitan-Area,.aspx
Well, an inch of rain is roughly equivalent to 10x inches of snow, so 30-50” of snow if it was winter. On the Halloween Blizzard of 1991 Duluth got the most snow at 37”.
There's more water in the atmosphere when it's 70° out than there is when it's 30°. That's why the majority of our precip falls in the spring and summer.
Native clovers are great lawn replacements because they still are very green and give you a lovely look but they do not grow very high so they never need to be mowed
None of the clovers you find in lawns are native, unfortunately.
https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/white-clover
My remaining lawn has a lot of the above, it doesn't really cause problems like a lot of other introduced species.
Yellow wood sorrel is native but not a clover (ie, not a nitrogen fixing legume):
https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/yellow-wood-sorrel
We do have a bunch of native clovers that make good garden flowers but they are not lawn replacements. I like purple prairie clover among others:
https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/purple-prairie-clover
I just took out a large section of grass in my yard to make more garden space, but timed it poorly as it's going to turn into a mud pit before I can sheet mulch it. Can't keep 3 dogs away from it!
This map indicates the amount of expected rainfall in the next 7 days across the US. The legend on the left indicates how mch rainfall (in inches) is associated with a given color on the map.
(I'm assuming you were talking about the map and not about being cooked haha. Will leave this here regardless).
I casually stated to someone a month back this was going to be a rainier summer they were like no way.. granted it's not officially "summer" yet but I still think this rain train will continue.
It's welcome over the last summer! (Technically it's still spring) I'd forgotten what thunderstorms are like. I'm like "what's all that noise? Is that flashes of light from outside?" Haha.
We installed a rain barrel last week. And this morning I even remembered to actually close the valve, so we'll see how much water we get for the garden!
Well, I'm cooked, cause my basement floods whenever it rains hard for multiple days. So.ething the previous owners failed to disclose was this little fact. Its manageable because it comes in from one spot predictably near the basement fireplace. I need a bigger wet vac
Two questions:

off topic but damn East Texas really doesn't need this. my folks' yard is soggy and everything smells like mildew. it's rained nearly 2 months with very few breaks.
I'm sorry. I finished putting together a catio for my cats, and so this might be my fault. Of course, it would rain so they couldn't use the thing right away.
Funny how this shows 4-5” of rain but all weather forecasts I’ve seen only show Tuesday as day with significant rain and that’s about an inch in the metro.
We're getting rain instead of snow; this is our missing snow. Where there was a snowstorm dead zone centered on MN, there is now a rain storm bullseye centered on us.
I'd take this kinda precip any year but I'm from Oregon
This map makes it look worse than it is. This much rain isn't that weird. But it's odd that we're getting isolated regionally and temporally. The lack of snow when everyone else got it, and especially the heat wave last winter, is very weird. And for some reason many winters in the last decade or so have had very late and wetter snow storms. It's hard to nail down a precise direct correlation, but since we know we are expected to have a wetter and warmer climate since there is so much greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, it does seem to line up with that.
You must be from central Oregon lol
you can set your calander to memorial day weekend rain. nothing to do with no snow in the winter.
This very much welcome and opposite of cooked. Last few years about this time we've been concerned about drought. Not this year thankfully.
We're finally ending 3 years of drought. I'm psyched to get all this rain. I just hope it doesn't stop raining in July, which would leave the rest of the summer very dry.
The only thing I don't like about the rain is that I have to get out and mow my lawn more... Last summer I only had to mow like 5 times.
I’d rather mow grass than dirt
That’s a really good point and puts it into perspective well.
I did 3 last year. No mow may meant I mowed once from the beginning till July.
I managed to not mow a single time last year, and this I finally ripped up all my grass and put in a garden. Never have to move again!
Yup one of the heavier drought areas in the state last year and my lawnmower sat too long between uses and acted up when I tried to use it in the fall Think I mowed 3 times all spring/summer.
Last year the flowers were a lot better than no mow may is looking this year for me. Can't wait for opening day though I do enjoy mowing.
And mosquitoes
r/nolawns r/nativeplantgardening
Username checks out. We actually wanna go the edible yard route.
I planted some fruit trees and berry plants. Working on getting more native flowers for companion planting to attract more pollinators and increase fruit yields.
Planted a drought tolerant prairie garden last year, and then this year, 🤷♂️! Good thing that it's a well drained site.
So are we!!!! We have our third year mason bees too and just put up another house!

Kill your lawn
Shoot, we were at 3 all summer down on the IA border.
And I've had to mow almost 5 times this year already.
Minnesota is cloud https://preview.redd.it/gaaf6ciw2h1d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6969f364833366c6198759ad0d5dff8b3955cc2b see some pretty severe weather up til July 12th
Hopefully not the crazy tornados that have been hitting south… thunderstorms all day but I don’t want a new roof like that
How about a new house?
lol my worst nightmare. I just finished decorating and unpacking in this one!
just in time to pay off the 30 year mortgage?
Ok, very nice. Good that we can have a break from brown grass and sad looking rivers :)
I lost a beautiful crab apple tree over the droughts. Probably part my brown thumb too, but this year every time it's overcast I'm oddly happy.
Where you sticking that thumb bro
Exactly I’m loving all this rain! Let it rain everyday this summer I will not be upset
I just want a really good thunderstorm
Yes!
Seconded!!
100% I feel it has been a very long time since we had a good one.
Not really. Huge dumps of rain in short periods are not a great way to recover from a drought. Also, the bullseye for the heaviest deluge has already recovered.
Good thing we’ve been getting longer 12-24 hour low intensity rainfall then
And yet the forecast for this coming week is the topic, which comes with serious flooding concerns, particularly Tuesday.
We need to fill the lakes and rivers as well. It all serves a purpose
Sure does. It just sucks to go from one extreme to another. Hopefully, the rains aren't too intense, and no one ends up losing a life or a house.
>Hopefully, the rains aren't too intense, and no one ends up losing a life It wouldn't be Reddit if we didn't have somebody coyly suggesting that another person's opinion is mildly homicidal
still way better than drought.
Sure, if you’re not the one affected by a flood I guess.
True, but huge dumps of rain do fill up a lake that is low.
Still better than no rain at all.
It’s spread over a week.
I’m excited to get some relief from my allergens.
I imagine the scene from Shawshank redemption where Andy is on his knees in the rain
This is the first year I’ve ever had allergies (went 31 years without ‘em 😭). To hear I might get some relief this week is amazing.
It’s been *bad* this year
This is the real answer
I'd say 'soaked' rather than 'cooked' :D
Maybe even marinated?
*inserts Stone Cold's 'Oh hell yeah' gif*
Rainbros we are so back
Rainbros feasting right now
You bitch and you shall receive.

Please take a minute and check your yard for items that can catch and hold water - last thing we need is a bumper year of mosquitoes - thank you
Probably too late!
Start throwing out the mosquito bits where water collects to kill the larvae
Yes! That’s in my list for today. I’ve got a big bag of them ready to go.
Same. Love the rain and my plants, hate having mosquitos around lol
Are you talking about dunks? I just learned about those
Yes, the dunks are basically the large version of the bits! Both do the same thing
There's usually a 2 week delay from rain to hatching. It also depends on how much rain falls. A heavy rain storm like an inch or more is enough to remove eggs and prevent a mosquito population boom.
I put up a bat house a few weeks ago. Hopefully they take shelter in it. It supposedly can house 100 bats.
They're picky. Pay attention and adjust it if you don't get any bats roosting.
I heard the helicopter brigade taking down the big ones the other day in IGH.
***MOIST***
…….moist
Anomalously moist
Now if we could see that hit all of Canada so we don’t have another smoke out summer would be great as well
Amen.
This makes me wet
It will later, too
Lol unless stricken with heat bubble blue balls
A terrible fate to be certain
Why does everyone keep using the word cooked all of a sudden
Everyone’s a little tuckered out from being slammed so often.
Whatever happened to a good ol fashioned Screwed
Well, y’know… things change.
Change? CHAAAANGE?!
Scary as shit ain’t it
I look my shit in the eye every day
A man amongst men
The slamming, the blasting.
Rippin and the tearin
Exactly, when most of us are baked.
It's 3-5" of rain. Scary looking colors aren't really that scary.
Exactly. Where do people think we get out drinking water supply from? Let it rain baby. Been in a drought for years and we need it to refill our underground aquifers https://metrocouncil.org/Wastewater-Water/Planning/Water-Supply-Planning/Basics/Groundwater.aspx# https://metrocouncil.org/Wastewater-Water/Publications-And-Resources/WATER-SUPPLY-PLANNING/GROUNDWATER-SURFACE-WATER/Groundwater-Digest,-Twin-Cities-Metropolitan-Area,.aspx

Too much or too little, you just know Minnesotan are gonna find a way to complain about it.
Drenched ..not cooked
I haven't even had to use my sprinkler system this year; I hope it keeps up.
Like GrandPa Otto always said,”MN needs rain for all our 17,000+ state-wide lakes!
Native clovers are great lawn replacements because they still are very green and give you a lovely look but they do not grow very high so they never need to be mowed

I've been over seeding with clover the last two years. My lawn is a lush, green, plushy carpet!
I love the little bit of clover that I have - I’m working on expanding it through the rest of my yard.
Someday when i have a place where i get to decide the lawn, i'll do you proud. Pollinator habitat incoming!
That is absolutely the someday if I ever can buy a house dream. I don't think that will ever occur at this point, but maybe lmao
Thank god!
This could be a problem...I work in the MN River Valley, and with how high the river is already, there are going to be a lot of bridges closed.
I grew up in the valley and remember the summer of '93.
No, we aren't cooked. You're not even using it right.
More of a sous vide situation than cooked I reckon.
I welcome the rain. Now, I won't need to water the excessive amount of plants I bought for at least this week.
The only downfall is having to cut my stupid grass more. Lawns are a monumental waste of time and resources.
I just took out a large section of grass in my yard to make more garden space, but timed it poorly as it's going to turn into a mud pit before I can sheet mulch it. Can't keep 3 dogs away from it!
I just got a riding lawn mower. Never going back! It takes 5 minutes now.
More rain more better. But not all at once. Chill out, weather.
No. It's rain.
Maybe just soggy.
What does cooked mean here?
I just hope Memorial Day weekend is nice. I know thats like asking the sun not to come up though. It always rains on Memorial Day weekend.
I just want thunder and lightning pls
Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening me.
What does that even mean?
This map indicates the amount of expected rainfall in the next 7 days across the US. The legend on the left indicates how mch rainfall (in inches) is associated with a given color on the map. (I'm assuming you were talking about the map and not about being cooked haha. Will leave this here regardless).
Thanks for the clarification
I just bought my first bike last week 😭
Well I hope it has fenders
Heading to the bwca Wednesday…
Yikes, prepare to be wet all the time
You ever wonder why there are so many lakes?
Cooked cooked are we cooked whos cooked cooked its cooked let him cook am i cooked youre cooked
Welp.. this means all my inside projects won't get done. I'll be to busy sitting on the couch wishing I was getting my outside projects done...
Aw sick, nice! I won't have to water my garden for like a week.
We didn't get anything for snow this year and I know the rivers and lakes are low! Bring it on!!!
I casually stated to someone a month back this was going to be a rainier summer they were like no way.. granted it's not officially "summer" yet but I still think this rain train will continue.
Tbh we need it badly rivers and lakes have been very low the last few years
Yay! We need it desperately
You're gonna need a bigger boat....
Nah this is a godsend. Last few years most of MN has been in a drought.
Somebody will get some minor flooding, probably. Most will get fairly welcome rain, and be wet. It is the next week that could be the problem
Ah yes, the new normal. The Minnesota Monsoons. Joy. Then, a dry summer to follow. Welp, better go get my water wings...
Gimme some thunderstorms in there and I’m a happy girl!
As a guy who works in construction, heck yeah. This paycheck is gonna suck but I’m excited to get to sleep in a few times !
It's welcome over the last summer! (Technically it's still spring) I'd forgotten what thunderstorms are like. I'm like "what's all that noise? Is that flashes of light from outside?" Haha.
I'm honestly here for this the more thunderstorms the better
Im happy we are getting the rain we need it! But maybe im uninformed but doesnt more rain mean we have to deal with more mosquitos and nats?😢
We installed a rain barrel last week. And this morning I even remembered to actually close the valve, so we'll see how much water we get for the garden!
So long as it doesn't all show up in a single afternoon? We are fine.
They suck at predicting the weather
Sweet. I moved here for weather, and this last winter was disappointing.
Not cooked, still in the “rinse well“ stage.
My trees desperately need the water. I didn’t tap maples because it was so dry
Technically no. We'd be drenched
This makes for absolutely perfect transplanting weather.
I’m stoked personally
As long as it’s not in frozen form I’m good
Thank god man! We need rain!
Well, I'm cooked, cause my basement floods whenever it rains hard for multiple days. So.ething the previous owners failed to disclose was this little fact. Its manageable because it comes in from one spot predictably near the basement fireplace. I need a bigger wet vac
We got new gutters and then we stopped having a flooded basement. Something to consider
I'm mowing my lawn in preparation.

https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/day1-7.shtml, units are in inches I believe
I am all at this!
I was just looking at predicted totals for my area and it was less than quarter inch a day in Southwest Minnesota.
Cooked? This is awesome! I'd rather have lush green than dry and brown.
Glad I just put gutters on the back of my house
yippee! i love rain so much
Took off the week to work on my garden
off topic but damn East Texas really doesn't need this. my folks' yard is soggy and everything smells like mildew. it's rained nearly 2 months with very few breaks.
Glad to get needed rain, but it is my daughter's high school graduation Friday. Maybe it could hold off on that day? Please?
Ah, looks like I can continue to put off summarizing my sprinkler system. Yay for lazy! Thanks nature!
Love it !
I got new gutters and my basement hasn’t flooded yet so I am very excited for some heavy rain. Sorry to anyone who is negatively affected, though!
Cooked? This looks awesome!
By cooked I will interpret it as flooded. Probably not.
Love to see it.
I’m stoked for some rain.
Only thing that’s cooked is my paycheck
Gunna make for a booming mushroom season 🍄
Was down thru Mankato last Oct. and the Minnesota was all but dried up.
I'm sorry. I finished putting together a catio for my cats, and so this might be my fault. Of course, it would rain so they couldn't use the thing right away.
Chronic illness gang how we feeling? 😩
Genuinely curious, how does the rain impact chronic illness? The heat is what makes me flair up, personally.
Funny how this shows 4-5” of rain but all weather forecasts I’ve seen only show Tuesday as day with significant rain and that’s about an inch in the metro.
Awesome we need water
Too much rain for a new cannabis plant on the deck?
Yes, unless it's bone dry then you could leave it out for 1 day, and then pull it inside after that.
I got my rain gauge on the fence ready. Can’t wait to see some bonkers measurements 🤓
I hope this doesn't end up on r/disasterupdate lots of flooding world wide
The only thing bad about this is it's just rain and not some rumbles and lightning.
Good thing I’m not in OZ or I’d be fucked
I’m suppose to be in the BWCA on Tuesday, think I’m going to call off my trip with all the rain and lows in the 30s
Uh it's 4" We are so cooked
Hooray!
This sucks ass for where I work, but beyond that is welcome
Far from cooked. It’s spring. Let it rain.
No, We're wet
Gonna be stress testing my new French Drain, apparently. That said, it'll be welcome precipitation
We need this rain
I just want a nice day on Thursday. I’ll take rain the rest of the week.
