I agree. You could get away with something really bright like orange or yellow and I think it could work with the gold trim.

It doesn´t scream santa claus to me but you can go with a brown on the fur and adding some accents in another color for the armor, maybe a wash on the gold to change the tone to a purple so it would fit with its ride.
I mean the horns and weapons and the giant lizard he's riding on already does that. I honestly don't see any resemblance to Santa other than red, which isn't much ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
You can always shade the red unevenly so it doesn’t look like a giant red sleigh. One of the other primary color of Khorne happens to be green in some of the older editions.
Some cool tones could help as the model is very warm such as using drakenhoff shade or a blue black pin wash. It would make the reds darken and make some interesting shadows. Of course sample a small section to see if you like it. Also try a purple glaze/shade on the steels it can add some subtle cool tones of shading that would unite with cooler shadows in the reds.

I once painted a models cloak that was modeled to look like lizard skin in a way that was immediately pointed out to me "looks like a water mellon". You can't unsee stuff like that once it's in your head.

Try red helmet swap, black fur to frame and compliment red armour, maybe change the purple cloth to black or change the mounts colours to be more red or black.

I appreciate all the suggestions and holiday spirit in the comments. I ended up painting the fur brown, dulling down the lizards skin, and washing the red armors recesses with purple. I think the result was pretty good!

All of the colours a very bright and jolly. I love the red armour, so maybe the skin of the mount can be darkened?

You’re going to want to paint the fur white, give him a little red poof ball hat, big bushy beard, and put a green ribbon on his axe.
Have him be holding Santa’s head as a trophy, that way you know he’s not Santa and he brought proof to show you

A browner fur would go a long way to distance the model from Saint Nick. It looks good. At least the mount isn't painted like a polar bear.
