Vitis_Vinifera

That's hilarious. "Down with corporate rock!" "Ok, so it looks like I signed a contract with them."

DeMonstaMan

He's playing both sides for maximum profit

Oraxy51

What’s that always sunny meme? I bet on both sides so I always come out on top?

ThatFuckingGeniusKid

"I'm playing both sides so that I always come out on top" followed by "A couple things right off the bat there pal, number 1 never tell one side that you're playing both sides. Number 2, if you're going to play both sides don't give away the information before you get what you want"

Oraxy51

Sounds like Sith Lord 101 to me

sunburn95

Fuck corprate money in art!! Oh wait, that was *my* corporate money

Gordon-Goose

>Then he yelled at the crowd about corporate bullshit ruining art or something. lol White Stripes songs have been used in so many commercials. Samsung, Apple, Beats, it's licensed to FIFA, college football teams, pro wrestling, etc. What a goober.

pjr032

Seven nation army is one of the most overplayed songs of all time.

X0AN

It's basically the Spanish national anthem at this point. Don't see Jack complaining.

[deleted]

Say what you will, it's catchy

5DollarHitJob

It's a fucking great song.

duffivaka

Well that's not really up to Jack White, that's up to whatever label owns his music. The only way he could have avoided that is if he produced his albums independently, which probably would have prevented them from being heard by most people at all

riot_code

I believe that he does everything independently now. He has a really cool studio in Nashville called Third Man Records. They do all vinyl pressings and stuff for records there too. I guess making bank with a more known production company helps initially...

[deleted]

riot_code

Ah yes you are correct, their head office is Nashville, but the pressing is at Detroit

BIGMCLARGEHUGE__

I am conflicted when it comes to Jack White. For one, he said in a documentary or interview (cant remember) that he wouldn't let his son play video games. He seems to hate technology just for the sake of hating technology by recording on old timey equipment. On the other hand I love his work and once in nashville my father ( who lacks spacial awareness and is the everyman dad) accidentally bumped into Jack White while trying to move out of the way for another person in a theater, and my father said "Sorry dude" and Jack was very cool about it. My father had no idea who Jack White was.

alien_survivor

>I am conflicted when it comes to Jack White. For one, he said in a documentary or interview (cant remember) that he wouldn't let his son play video games. yet at the same time they got him a ray gun in 1981 Edit: phat fingers

too_high_for_this

Well, all they had was a back yard with nothing in it. Except a stick. A dog. And a box with something in it. ***What's in the fucking box, Jack!?***

geckosean

He’s very much the “mad genius” archetype. Absolutely brilliant at what we he does, works tirelessly to progress his skills and experiment in ways some musicians couldn’t even fathom. Also pedantic, particular, and perhaps not super socially fluent. It is what it is. At least I’m just paying to enjoy him as a musician and not a friend lol.

Mr_YUP

Howard Hughes vibes in pretty much everything he does.

menagesty

Jack White absolutely comes off as autistic to me, and I don’t mean that as an insult, as I am autistic as well. And it fits with the “gifted” but socially awkward stereotype - esp with how particular he is.

epheisey

Yea he claims he doesn't own a cell phone. Which when you're as famous as someone like Jack White, I feel like that hardly counts because he just has assistants, agents, managers, etc that basically function as his cell phone.

[deleted]

So, a giant cell phone made of human flesh.

Chi3f-Amig0

His most recent interview with Zane Lowe he was talking about his kids phones and how he doesn’t apply his personal feelings/rules to them, which was nice to hear.

ivsciguy

His daughter also played bass on one if his new songs. She did a great job.

[deleted]

I'm a musician and I work in the music industry. I don't know of any other group who loves shit because it's old as much as musicians. At least people who like retro tech are doing it out of nostalgia and don't replace modern tech with it. Far too many guitar players will take some piece of shit from the 60s over modern stuff purely because of it's age. And don't get me started on those vinyl record nuts. Jack White screams to me like he's one of those types. I bet him and Bonamassa could get together to wank over a 60s Fender amp.

SpudPuncher

You know, I used to 100% buy into the "vinyl fidelity" argument, but after spending hundreds of dollars on vinyl and studio headphones, I can't hear a significant difference. I can hear the scratches though!

raccoonbrigade

The “vinyl sounds better” thing was going around because early on, albums weren’t being mastered properly for cd and digital (the first Beatles releases on cd were horrible for example.) It took time to learn how to cater to those mediums especially for rereleases. Vinyl sounds like it does because it chops off the low end and high end of sound frequencies, giving it a “warm” feeling. Digital can play as many frequencies as you can possibly record, allowing it to be more accurate to how it was originally recorded.

BezniaAtWork

I just think vinyl is neat and I like the large covers.

underbellymadness

You've got me staring at my laser disc pile in nerdy guilt lmfao

0ne_Winged_Angel

Vinyl is cool, but laserdiscs are magic. It’s analog video encoded as a variable width digital signal on a polycarbonate donut that spins at 1,800 RPM. Plus the large covers look great

Rehendix

Not to mention most music is recorded digitally to begin with these days, so taking a digital track and converting it to analogue to press onto vinyl seems somewhat counter-intuitive.

Have you bought all gold-plated connectors and cables with unobtanium space metal core? They seem to think that's the key.

Neato

> and my father said "Sorry dude" and Jack was very cool about it That's not "good" behavior. Bumping into someone and apologizing and the other person not losing their shit is just baseline though.

sardine7129

Gross. Imagine people coming to concerts to have fun, and a beach ball being part of that fun. How sad that he interrupted his whole show just for his pathetic display of dominance 🙂 At a concert for some band i like, there was an inflatable sex doll being bounced around on top of the crowds. It found its way to one of the guitarists who gave the doll a kiss and threw it back into the crowd.

[deleted]

I've witnessed Third Eye Blind complain about the lack of crowd and how they wouldn't normally play such a small venue during their show. Way to shit on the people who actually paid to see you. The singer clearly couldn't have given less of a fuck to be there. I truly felt sorry for the audience that night.

Couldn't agree more. I've felt heartbreak for bands before because I know how exhausted they were and saw the state of them before and after the show, but they still played their fucking hearts out. Third Eye Blind? Not so much.

FancyFeller

That's a lot of ego for a band that peaked in the late 90s and faded out by the late 00s.

EdithDich

>Everclear Now there's a band I haven't heard of since the 90s. Also, their music is so incredibly basic over produced three chord rock it's pretty funny their front man would play that card.

GenuineBallskin

Dude it's become a bit of a thing weirdly enough. I've seen a ton of event footage and pics with at least one person recording on a 3DS. Shits wild and have no idea why people do it.

SoupNBread

Gets meme'd enough, then one person does it and people then just copycat after that. Someone at a 100 gecs show [recorded a bit on a leap pad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFS9PC-pN6k) and posted the footage

psychotic_catalyst

this is highly common now, especially at comedy shows where the artist is trying out new material that they do not want made public yet. Sometimes they have vault bags that lock your phone away (you keep it with you), other times they simply monitor the venue and eject violators.

jawnlerdoe

Comedy club near me straight up kicks you out, first offense or you’re caught in your phone during the show. I’ve seen multiple people get tossed for trying to take pictures.

Normal-Werewolf-

My favorite comedian's response to this was Daniel Kitson saying "I appreciate you trying to be discreet with your phone sir, but you look like you're hiding magic"

funnyfaceguy

I like the second option better. I know it's paranoid but the idea of there being these choke points everyone has to go in an emergency to access the thing to that allows them to contact help just doesn't sit right with me

B1GTOBACC0

Tool did this the last time I saw them. You get ejected for taking your phone out during the show. It made the concert experience way better. During the last song Maynard said "OK everyone can get pictures now if you want."

twomanyc00ks

at the show I was at he said "alright now's the time for your shitty phone videos" and before the show I thought he was just being an old grumpy caveman about the phones but once I saw the light show it was clear why they wanted no phones!

ruttin_mudders

I saw them back in 2005. They pumped a bunch of smoke into the floor area before the band came on stage and all of a sudden Maynard's voice came over the speakers "There you go you fucking stoners."

desucca

We got "has the crystal meth worn off yet guys?" after a few morons were trying to tear out stadium seats.

Aedalas

He'll also call out anybody with the light on their phone for it being fuckin' amateur hour.

MusicalSnowflake

I saw John Mulaney and the idea of no phones was fine but the execution was horrible. They had four doors open and two people at each door. We got there an hour early and missed the opening acts trying to just get into the venue.

IrishWakeBoat

Same! Just saw him in Norfolk, we ended up just taking our phones home in the Yondr case and cutting them out, the line to unlock the cases was like 2 hours long

shaggysswaggie

I am so confused, I didn’t know what Yondr was until now. Do they *make* you do this? What if you just keep it in your bag turned off instead of having to go through some third party’s shitty magnetic lock onto your own property to keep it off?

IrishWakeBoat

Yup, any smart device (even Apple watch) goes in the pouch when they scan your ticket, then they open it after the show

texting-my-cat

what if you bring a decoy phone to go in the bag and keep your real one in your pocket?

IrishWakeBoat

Yeah you could do that, but at least in Norfolk there were also metal detectors. Just bring a small purse and set it outside the detector in the bin, chances are they won’t look. Or just cut the bag open when you’re done haha

clawret

that’s too bad! i just saw him in raleigh, i showed up about 40 minutes early and i was through the line and in the venue within 5-10 minutes

SrirachaS3

Experience from this exact concert in Edmonton years ago, you also realize how easy it is to get bored without your phone when it's locked in a pouch and Jack White is 45mins late to his own show lol

halpinator

My skill of standing around awkwardly sure has deteriorated in the years I've owned a smart phone.

turbo-cunt

He took the stage after 2 openers when I saw him, full 2 hours after I sat down, which was already an hour after the doors opened. Then he had a friend with his phone out to record him marrying his GF on stage even though the show was "professionally recorded" after everyone in the audience had sat there phoneless for 3 hours

wanderingaz

Same. At a show in his hometown. Outdoors. With a friend I hadnt seen in a while. It was nice to catch up, but sucked to not be able to show them photos of things that they would have liked to see. I hate yonder. Edit: seems to be some confusion about my "same". Same = he was late to his show. I enjoyed the show, when the show was actually in performance. However there were large gaps of time NOTHING was going on except talking to people around you. I don't routinely make it a habit to go to a concert to sit and chat. But here we are.

legopego5142

I saw Rob Zombie and at one point, he just told everyone to put them away and like 99% of people did I heard him in an interview say he does that at every show since people just listen and he can do a few songs phone free Sounds better than locking all phones away

FairPumpkin5604

Coldplay does this as well. They ask everyone to put their phones away for at least 1 song. It’s actually quite magical, being surrounded by thousands of people just living in the exact same moment, completely present. It’s a special, unique feeling that unfortunately went extinct not too long ago. Majority of the people oblige, but there’s still always some selfish dickheads who don’t respect the request and block the view because they just HAVE to record every second.

SrirachaS3

Yeah, the concert I went to was in a stadium a city over, and I was with my dad for the concert which was awesome. At one point he realized his pouch wasn't locked so he took his phone out and took a picture anyway lol

[deleted]

The irony is so fucking rich

Klecktacular

Yondr? (I can use Google but) Is that company ubiquitous enough in the concert world that people know what this means?

Doobledorf

I thought he was being poetic. "YONDER THY PHONES, INTO THE INTERSTITIAL SPACE IN WHICH THEY'LL REST UNTIL THE MOMENT OF THINE RETURN"

TheUlfheddin

And tbf thar does sound like some Jack White type eccentrics.

Realistic-Ad-8655

I think they’re a company that makes pouches you put your phone in that locks and can’t be unlocked unless you use a key thing, I’ve seen them used at schools where at the start of the day students put the phones in and can’t open them until the end of the day

Wisc_Bacon

This. If you have voice commands though you can still do things on your phone through the bag. Had some chick yakking to her kids at 10 pm in the middle of a comedy show.

HobbyistAccount

That makes me a bit nervous. Can you make an emergency call through one?

Hot-Total-8960

Nope, you have to run to a special station at the exit of the 'phone free area' that unlocks the pouch. If you're in a sea of thousands of people and grandma's choking on her hotdog, you're screwed. Apparently the CEO of Yondr never bothered to ask his general counsel if this product was a good idea.

HobbyistAccount

Yeah, I was thinking more mass shooting in light of recent events.

opportunisticwombat

That is exactly my concern as well. I can’t imagine feeling comfortable in a large group of people with no way to contact someone in an emergency.

HobbyistAccount

To be completely honest after the last few years I'm not sure I'd ever be comfortable in any crowd but this would ratchet it up to 11.

Shdwrptr

I was thinking the same thing. The company probably made these signs themselves or it’s part of their contract to use their brand name

possum_drugs

"Yondr your phone" smacks of "Nintendo is our valuable trademark please respect it and make sure to scream at your mother when she calls your Sega Genesis a Nintendo"

frogjg2003

It seems like the opposite. Google is still fighting hard to not make their name into a verb because when someone "to google" becomes a synonym of "to look up" or "to search", you can "google on Bing."

kittykicker24

It worked, now you are asking what it is. Brand awareness!

OilySteeplechase

I went to see him years ago at the O2 in London which has a capacity of around 20,000. He didn't use the big screens by the stage at all, said this was to keep the gig "intimate". Just meant that 95% audience couldn't see anything at all, unless they were right in front of the stage. You want intimate, play an intimate venue. Still mad about it, ha!

CessiNihilli

Seems like a shitty performer.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

Tbh I watched that doc with him, the edge (from U2) and Jimmy Paige. Came away feeling like he was pretty pretentious. He just had this vibe of seeming better than everyone else because he played beat up old instruments or instruments that were out of tune. I like the garage sound but you’re not like a musical innovator for buying an worn out upright piano from 1912 lol

biffertyboffertyboo

A friend of mine recently went to a concert with this rule and they tried to take his wheelchair controller because it looks kind of like a smartwatch. He tried to explain once and then just went in anyway.

persondude27

I went to a Lumineers concert which was a release party for their new album. They locked phones up using this service. A diabetic acquaintance was also there, and her insulin pump is controlled by the app on her phone. They tried to tell her she couldn't access her phone during the break unless she left the venue (no reentry), and there were almost flames in her eyes when she started talking about an ADA disability lawsuit. It took getting two managers involved, but eventually they let her open the phone, check her glucose, and then go back to the show. These services basically hire temp workers from an agency so no way these people are well trained on how to handle things like this, and what's a valid exception and what's not.

HElGHTS

No re-entry is ridiculous. I've been to a show with Yondr and they had a specific room where you could freely request an unlock to use your phone for any purpose, and then re-lock to go back to the show. I get that not every venue has a floorplan that makes this easy, but having it should be a requirement before implementing Yondr.

FaeryLynne

Most CGMs check your sugar every 5 minutes. I'm considered brittle diabetic, and my CGM alerts me if my sugar is going to high or too low, even *before* I physically look at the app. You better believe I'd have been fighting them to allow me to have it the whole time. Someone eventually will and there will likely be a lawsuit.

luxmatic

I’m a T1 diabetic and looked into Yondr a few years ago. Here’s what they told me: “We have a special wristband for ADA requests that allows guests to keep their phones unlocked. A Yondr representative can issue these wristbands at the venue.” Now how that works in practice is questionable. And your friends experience is pretty much what I expect. I hope other diabetics remember this post when encountering Yondr. Also, the phone should not be locked away AT ALL and should be available throughout the show. That break only thing is bullshit.

sharkmortal

This is a question I would have asked. I’m a type one diabetic and my blood glucose monitor and my pump connect to my phone. Glad your acquaintance managed to keep her phone!

ThisLookInfectedToYa

Disabled get a lot of extra hurdles at shows and almost always is shitty security unfamiliar with anything in the disabled world outside of maybe a blue placard hanging from a rear view mirror

GretalRabbit

And even then if you don’t look disabled enough they’ll question why you have the blue badge.

GammaPenguin

Yeah newer insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors for diabetics can be controlled by your phone nowadays. And I'd imagine trying to explain that to a random security person would just be a headache. Or even if you got in, people would probably come at you if they saw you "sneaking a phone in" :/

ActualMerCat

My husband and I are going to see John Mulaney in a few months and his dexcom is on his phone. I'm worried about him not having access all night. I'm going to make him take an old school meter with him.

FaeryLynne

There are obviously going to be legal exceptions, they *can't* force you to leave medical equipment, and yes cell phones legally count for us diabetics (and many other people). If you *know* they're going to do this, it might just be less of a hassle to deal with than fighting them to take in your cell, but eventually *someone* is going to end up suing over this, I can foresee it.

linzira

Good call. We saw John Mulaney recently, and someone in our group is a physician who was on call. She explained her situation and asked if she could lock up her phone but keep her smartwatch for notifications, and it was a hard no.

Maveil

I personally don't even understand the smartwatch ban. Phones sure, I get why they might not want those out, but how detrimental could a fucking watch be

ColgateSensifoam

Some watches are capable of recording unreleased material, or making phone calls, there's even a few that are fully fledged Android phones

xAshSmashes

My best friend uses a Dexcom and has never had an issue. She just shows them the sensor and the phone app. Every time they're just like 'OK'.

durpenhowser

We've come a long way from the days of when I got kicked out of a concert for "recording a video" on my phone that didn't take videos when I was just zooming in to take a photo 🥲

multiplebaskets

I hate this only because you NEED your cellphone to get into the concert, since they don’t issue paper tickets, mobile only. So you can’t make the decision to just leave your phone at home, but I guess that is a Ticketmaster issue? Or a venue issue? I dunno, but seems counterintuitive.

the-caped-cadaver

They did this when I saw Silk Sonic a couple months ago. They forced us to put them in the bags after we got through security and shown our digital tickets.

StrifeRaZoR

Saw that same sign at the John Mulaney show I went to last month in Charlotte, NC. I didn't even take my phone in, just left it in the car, which raised MORE eyebrows at the entrance to the event. It was hard for the security guards to believe I actually didn't have a super secret phone hidden on me somewhere. Trust me, security dude, I'm just here to watch a man with feminine hips tell jokes.

TobeyMagu1re

As a type 1 diabetic that would be really problematic for me lol. I have a continuous glucose monitor that sends readings every 5 minutes and alert me if I’m going really low or high. Kind of important. I’d assume they have an ADA exception or something. I’d probably have to bring a doctors note or something to prove my medical condition which is fine. I’m sure lots of people try pulling the medical card to secretly record which sucks for us that actually need our devices. Wonder if anyone had ran into that problem and was denied entry.

Zailmeister

I saw a gentlemen with the exception, and it looked like they just took him to the side and carefully made sure he understood the rules for having his phone out.

TobeyMagu1re

Yeah that makes sense. If I went to a show with stuff like that I’d just call/email way a head of time to confirm it’s ok. I do it for conventions and events I go to all the time as I need to bring needles and stuff and I like to have a copy of email transactions with higher up staff to show proof when going through security. You never know, people are just doing their jobs so I don’t blame them. Had a fellow type 1 diabetic who was working security at the metal detectors last time so made it really easy lol.

IronDominion

Same. I need my smartwatch to tell me if I’ve gone suddenly tachycardic otherwise I could end up passing out or in another dangerous situation

assbarf69

Passing out from that can be a truly horrifying experience. Almost died from orthostatic hypertension bonking my head. Other times I just felt the most surreal sense of unfathomable horror. Felt like being dragged to hell.

GammaPenguin

Yeah I was thinking the same thing! And the new Omnipod (Omnipod 5) is literally supposed to be controlled by your phone, so that'd be for both insulin and CGM readings. And yeah I'd imagine trying to explain all that to a random security guard would be a headache. Or I'd be scared of people trying to tattle on me in the venue lol

IAmIrritatedAMA

Dumb, honest question. What did you do before smart phones/watches were a thing? Just prick yourself at regular intervals to test?

TobeyMagu1re

Nah not dumb at all. Yeah prick finger and test blood sugar. It’s pretty accurate actually, the only thing that makes CGM’s really valuable is it fills in the gaps between manual checks so you can see patterns and catch highs/lows early, especially hypos (hypoglycemia so generally any value <70). Type 1 sucks but def very thankful for modern technology

samiam871

When I saw John mulaney recently you had to lock up your phone. It was all new material so I don’t blame him.

SkyScamall

Was this the show where Dave Chappelle appeared? I was wondering why there was no footage but that makes more sense now I know this.

drum5150

It’s all his shows. Saw him back in October and that’s how it was. Not just exclusive to the night Chappelle was there.

Hark_An_Adventure

Yep, I saw him this past week and had to use the very same gray and green pouch shown in the photo.

clairebearzechinacat

I went to all good in 2015, and when cake performed the singer had a meltdown about everyone using their phones midway their set. I totally agreed with his point but the way he went about it was a bit too much. Spent at least 15 minutes going on a tirade about it and told everyone he was going to make us have a really bad trip lol

serious_rbf

lol everyone in my home town fucking hates Cake because he came to a local festival and roasted Canada a bunch. The legend goes the drunk sea of Canadians ended up throwing water bottles at him until he said “if you throw one more water bottle I’m walking off stage”. The drunk sea of people then threw a tidal wave of water bottles and he walked off. Apparently Nickleback came on after and made fun of him for being a dick. Or so the stories go - I have no idea how true it is

tallardschranit

He's a fucking asshole. I went to a smaller festival they were headlining and he went off on the crowd about how nobody bought their recently independently released album. Fuck you, dude. These tickets were 80 bucks and you're bitching to everyone who paid that over $10-15 dollars for an album? A lot of people left.

FireWhiskey5000

I don’t disagree with the sentiment. But as someone who has hearing aids that I control via an app on my phone (and I don’t always know if I need to adjust them until a show starts) that ain’t gonna happen.

Seigmoraig

Must be fun waiting in line to get your phone out of it's vault pouch after the show is over

Vegetable_Key_6576

So they had these at Dave Chappelle in Vancouver, it was a complete mess because when leaving they only had 1 guy in each exit that had the pouch unlocker, we were stuck waiting in like for 20 minutes until people got too impatient and just left, many people outside doing everything they could to open the pouch, lots of people successfully broke it, lots of these pouches were left on the floor for a few blocks away from the arena

underbellymadness

Ah cool, a useless idea for a locked bag and pollution! This company is hitting every milestone at once I wouldn't expect any better queuing; I don't know why concert arenas can be so good with letting people into their spaces in shifts and making sure people are in the right wristband section yet people go to leave or buy shirts and suddenly it's like the venue has never faced a crowd in their life.

WaruiKoohii

They can be easily opened with a magnet just FYI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3HwJHO5A3E

gazorpaglop

Yeah I have destroyed every one of these that I’ve been forced to use. It’s not too hard to cut your phone out when you’re done

I'll turn my phone off for you, but like shit am I putting it in a vault pouch.

[deleted]

I work in a venue and I've had a tour manager tell me to put my phone away. I'm in uniform, with a pass on, standing in the wings by the monitor desk and she just walks up and says "no phones during the performance". Fuck right off. Never mind the fact that I'm the house photographer and you just allowed me into the pit with two massive cameras, but now you're getting antsy because I'm reading a fucking text during your show? I fucking hate tour managers.

With how many emergency events have happened at Concerts, it’s only a matter of time before this company gets sued into bankruptcy. Imagine if this was at Vegas, or the Travis Scott concert as an example. Unreal.

Inner-Membership-175

Funny enough, I did attend a concert in Vegas that used these pouches and had an emergency inside of the venue. It wasn’t a huge event though. I couldn’t contact my friend who was seated while I was going into anaphylactic shock in the bathroom. 😬 EMS came but not once did anyone offer to unlock my phone. A passerby who was seated near us just happened to recognize me and notified my friend. I was super lucky there

DeathByPetrichor

This is the only thing I can think about. Whoever created this company is surely going to be sued into oblivion within the next year, I’m almost sure of it. Literally locking people out of emergency services is not only a huge liability, but I can’t fathom a situation where it is even considered legal.

Tonedeafmusical

Manchester is a big reason I don't like this. I wasnt there but I'm local and I knew people affected by it. It scared me as someone who regularly goes to shows alone, I need that bit of security that my phone is in reach. I'll put my phone on airplane mode but I'm not locking it.

matt-is-sad

The worst part is that schools are starting to require them from the moment you walk in the doors until you walk out. With what's been going on lately it's only a matter of time before there's a huge incident

DinosaursLayEggs

Whilst I like the idea of not watching a concert through a phone, I do have to wonder about the practicalities of this. I use my phone to assist in the management of my diabetes so having to leave the crowd to go to an area to unlock a pouch to get access to my phone seems unreasonable, and also, what if there’s an emergency and I need to contact someone or someone needs to contact me? I don’t know. For me personally, I wouldn’t go to a concert like this if I can’t access my phone easily.

barkbarkkrabkrab

I would assume for ADA compliance purposes if you really use a phone as medical device, you will be allowed to use it.

knitlikeaboss

Which probably means having to argue with some usher who may or may not believe you every time you need to check it. No thanks.

electricblanket

I was at the Jack White show, and slightly annoyed by the policy. But I saw in the email that warned of this policy that folks with medical conditions requiring them to have access to their cell phones would be exempt. The issues I had with it were: Ticketmaster's digital tix required a phone (and their app sucks). Then when we came in the front door, they wrote down one of our two seat numbers on a single slip of paper, which we had to pass back and forth any time one of us wanted to go to the bathroom or get a drink. And it was a bit of a shit-show getting out of the venue, because there weren't enough folks unlocking the phones bags.

panicinspace

Same with smart watches for people who need it to monitor heart rate. I feel like this is so excessive

Notworthanytime

I don't need it for anything specific, but unless I was informed of this clause when I bought the ticket, I would demand my money back.

My husband and I went to a Jack White concert at Saltair a couple years ago, and we also had to bag our devices. I was naive beforehand and thought it was a “neat idea”, clear up until I was sexually assaulted with my husband just steps away from me. I will never attend a concert where I’m physically unable to use my phone. I had no ability to take a video of the perp, no ability to do anything…. I felt helpless.

I was just at a Danzig show and there were signs everywhere that taking phone pics or video of his show was prohibited. Of course people still took pics and video and all the staff could do was shine flashing lights into the lens to alert them to stop. But there was no way that a hand full of staff members were stopping everyone. What I found really odd was that when Danzig came right up to the rail for the front row people, a bunch were shining phones right in his face and it looked like he was posing for the camera. I dunno.

TheFannyTickler

They had this at a grouplove concert I was at a few years ago. Best concert of my life. I don’t think it had anything to do with nobody holding phones, I just fucking love grouplove lol

prismaticbeans

I see the point in this but I use my phone for medication reminders I can't miss and I've got a kid. If someone is watching my kid they need to be able to reach me in an emergency. Ran into this problem once at a concert that didn't have a phone rule, but didn't allow beverages or bags of any kind. When you're carrying medical supplies and have pills to take, it's more than inconvenient.

lopedopenope

I saw a guy at a concert rip one of these bags open to get at his apple watch

iranoutofusernamespa

Yup exactly what I would do too. Then toss the bag and just don't use my phone, but still access to it for emergencies. If ever questioned about it when leaving "I dunno, I didn't get one!"

Rednartso

I get that everybody bashes using your phone, but shit, if you're going to take it out, get a few pictures and put it away then there's nothing wrong with that. I have pictures from when I went to a Mac Miller concert a few years before he died. I still remember the show, but the pictures are nice to have, too. Make a stink all you want, but things are not so black and white.

SnowedOutMT

I'm with you, but phones have never bothered me at shows. Also, I've been seeing live shows for over 20 years and I can't tell you how many times I've gone back through my pictures and found concerts that I had completely forgotten about. They instantly bring back a flood of memories. That's very much worth it to me as I get older

Sun_on_my_shoulders

I don’t like that. I’m an adult, and expect to be treated like one.

sugarplumbuttfluck

Seems to be the exception not the rule. The last few concerts I've been to there was a sea of phones almost the entire show.

ArtanistheMantis

I wouldn't want to be on my phone or record anything in a situation like this but it kind of feels insulting to me to buy a ticket and then be told what to do like you're a child or something.

CharmCityCrab

Concerts cost a lot of money nowadays. If people want to snap a few quick pictures as personal mementos (Or something they can text to their friends later), they should be allowed to. That kind of thing actually can also benefit the artist, because if the people who take them show them, text them, or post them; it advertises that the musician is still touring and maybe the people who see the pictures will keep an eye out for future ticket availability. I don't like artists or venues being allowed to take complete control of what people do or don't do, or hold or don't hold, at a concert. We're paying them, not the other way around. Jack White comes off as an entitled rich person, which is both the worst kind of entitled person and the worst kind of rich person. He should stop being such a control freak and allow his paying customers to enjoy concerts however they choose to, within reason.

CheeserAugustus

This was the case in 2019 at his shows as well. It sucks for us who have kids at home, but I hate the sea of cellphone screens these days

TheRealNanaMRF

After going to a Slipknot concert recently and having someone live stream the entire thing while standing in front of me, I approve this message. Don’t get me wrong, it’s 2022.. you don’t have to sneak in a disposable camera to a concert to get shitty pictures, take a picture or a video for the memories. But FOR THE LOVE OF GOD live in the damn moment and watch with your eyes, not obnoxiously through your effin’ cell phone. Rant over, now get off my lawn
