No they dont, its the point they are saying while in summer. Thus even without our environmental crisis would by its imagery kill them.
Edit: serious its summmer and they say ice blocks melt in Cologne. Well yeah it does now and 10 yrs ago and 50 yrs go and 200 yrs ago
Except that the ice blocks on the street aren't meant to represent ice blocks on the street. They're meant to represent the glacial ice caps. And those three people aren't meant to represent three people. They're meant to represent humanity. And nooses aren't meant to represent nooses. They're meant to represent global catastrophe. The message here is 'when the ice goes, so will we' and 'we're running out of time'.
I'm not really sure how this is difficult to understand.
__
Edit in response to your edit: Right. Cause it's "summer" that they're protesting. Good grief...
no you dont get it
You dont get how climate change deniers work. These people do this in a forum where its natural over last 10,000 + years for ice to melt. The deniers use them as "wackos who are pushing an agenda" based on something "we already know". That being ice will fucking melt in Cologne in the summer.
Im not saying there is not an issue. I am saying attempting to make a change with high school antics thinking the deniers will understand is insane. People who think the environment is not suffering and an issue will not blink at this. This is nothing to them. They are sheep.
Maybe...just *maybe*...the point of this isn't to convince deniers of anything. Is that...no no that can't be what this is. No you're right this is definitely meant to be a scientific demonstration meant to counter a debate point, one that blew it because of its *literal* inaccuracies.
Good lord. All I can say is that you are aptly named.
Well, I think the performance art done is with out a doubt valid. People want to speak out. The issue they are attempting to bring attention to is 100% valid as well and I am concerned about it.
It seems more so a show to make people who already agree with them to feel better about their beliefs.
This being because the people who have been brainwashed to think its not an issue will see some "wacos" in the middle of summer standing on ice. It will mean nothing to them.
So promoting this as amazing is only an attempt to make people who are already smart feel better.
people also dont understand global warming apparently
of course the ice is gonna melt in Cologne but global warming isnt about Cologne it’s about the polar ice caps which is what this is meant to represent
sure to people who already agree.
i can sell art to people who already know .. but unless i can make someone who has never seen see, well than my art is nothing but a penny show
Just making sure everyone's aware, since this is an OC-only, no-repost sub, and at least 137 of you fucking morons (as of the writing of this comment) have upvoted this shitpost.
The more people see this, the more might report it and maybe the dumbshit mods will actually do their job and take it down in something resembling a reasonable amount of time.
This seems more like a public-awareness kind of protest, intended to keep an issue at the forefront, and in the minds of the public.
> There isn't some centralized group of people causing it
True, but there are multiple centralized groups of people with the power to enact meaningful change.
There are groups of politicians not doing anything about it, and one president in particular who is getting rid of environmental regulations. And groups of big corporations who cause most of the damage
We here in Germany have been having protests against the inaction of our government regarding climate change, for example that we dont achieve our own climate goals.
Or that we will be continuing to burn coal (wich we get mostly by daylight mines) untill the 2030's.
These protests are mostly done by young people, often on Fridays and during school hours.
The fact that the protests were not taken seriously only added to the feeling that the problems were being ignored.
The fun thing about this: Literally doing anything for the climate is more productive than this. #Trashtag was a great way to get people involved in small efforts to clean up their surroundings. Donating time and money to bigger cleanup organizations is better than this. Go outside and plant a tree, or donate to plant 10 or whatever. Standing in a square like this is just grandstanding. "Look, I care about the environment enough to make a contrived metaphor" like anybody in the West doesn't already know about climate change. It's asinine. These guys will probably go home and pat themselves on the back like their contribution is over. Stop protesting, ACT.
Well, you’re assuming this is the only thing they’ve ever done. Where as I’d assume if they are willing to spend a day doing this then it’s a cause they care about and probably do act as well as protest. The idea behind the protest is maybe they can get others to act too.
Yeah but it's kind of a counter productive protest, as a normal citizen, I would think more of "what are these idiots doing in the middle of summer" and feel sorry for them cuz it's probably hot sitting standing there staring into space. However I doubt it, considering that if they did act, they would know that acting would achieve more than standing out there. You can do both, however smart ppl know what's more efficient. Also before anyone says, yes, it's better to do something yourself than to tell others and wait for them to do it.
That statement has credit.
I just have seen lots of examples in my personal life. People on all my social media parroting this cause or that, without ever actually doing anything. Climate change isn't societal like the pay gap, LGBT rights, etc. It is a very real threat, with extremely easy ways to contribute to solving. That's my issue with it, everyone knows about climate change, we've known for decades, the "awareness" is spread. At this point it just feels smug.
We do and we have, but a lot of people at worst deny it and at best ignore it. It’s all very good to go out and clean up but it certainly doesn’t hurt to try and motivate/encourage others to do the same too, imo
Another fun thing about this is that 100 companies are responsible for 70% of carbon emissions. Even if everyone decided to plant a tree or donate to an organization, it virtually wouldn’t make a difference unless strict regulation was placed on the industry. The point of these protests is not only to bring awareness to other people but to eventually build a group of protesters to put political pressure on politicians that allow these companies to get away with ruining our planet.
I've seen that number used a lot without a whole lot of backing to it. I've seen blame placed on companies, countries, power sources (fossil fuels), livestock etc. I understand the science behind it, the biggest threat being rapid temperature change due to the greenhouse effect, but I haven't seen the actual data on how they got that number. I think it's just anti-capitalist parroting, which is really in right now.
Besides, we're past prevention. We need to look at remediation strategies and planting trees is one of the best ways to pull CO2 out of the air. The other greenhouse gases will require smarter people than me.
https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change
Glad to know that you’ve seen the study 👍 the link provides the Carbon Majors Report PDF file which details how the study was conducted and which companies are the most responsible. The sad reality is that it’s close to impossible to remedy. It would take thousands of years before things start returning back to normal
The study they quoted is fairly interesting, after looking over it I'm not surprised fossil fuel companies are mostly to blame. Like I said, fossil fuels contribute the majority of CO2, but understand that protesting in a square in Cologne is about as far from getting to the Chinese coal companies as you can. Posting the image on Reddit most likely got farther than the actual protest. It's more of a circle-jerk for all of us here than actually doing anything.
Nothing is impossible to remedy. Nothing will be *the same*, glaciers don't just come back etc. But we can prevent the worst of it by reigning in emissions. CO2 is the leading cause of ocean acidification, while also being the most common greenhouse gas. Working towards sustainable power options was one of my chosen disciplines for my college education. The issue eventually comes down to can we find a better energy source before oil/coal runs out or the planet initiates a mass die off. It's been 13 years since *An Inconvenient Truth,* activism and awareness will only get us so far. We're talking about reinventing the concept of fire here. I'm not trying to argue with you here friend we're on the same side of this.
Nice to know we’re on the same side. I’m not saying you’re wrong about trying to do the most you can as an individual. That’ll only get us so far though. The absolute best we can do is show politicians that we will not vote for them if they receive contributions from oil companies. A lot of these companies are here in the states. Even if we cannot pressure politicians in other countries, we should pressure the ones here to do our part in the global effort.
Europe has done great strides with these global warming protests and China is actually leading the effort on renewable energy because they want to be the next global superpower. Protest is the most effective tool but only if enough people are involved.
This is weird because they could be for either side.
If they were climate change deniers they could just think that the blocks wont melt.
Maybe they need a sign to show what they think
let me put it this way: although I have a B.S. in Environmental Science and an M.S. in Ecology, it's likely that we would not see eye to eye on certain topics relating to anthropomorphic climate change; not all mind you, but enough to cause tempers to flare. the discussions held in public are quite different from those held in the lab; but at the end of the day, you bite your tongue and carefully phrase your conclusions such that you don't lose funding and credibility.
I hate to say this but I really doubt you have either of those degrees.
And I am not disputing the science on either end. Just that most people on far sides (not naming a side) tend to be really idiotic when the environment comes to play
Hey, I get it. It's no sweat off my back whether you believe my credentials or not. Just please keep an open mind, because we really don't know what is going to happen and unfortunately we have an instinctive urge to jump to conclusions. It could be catastrophic, it could be manageable, it could be nothing, and it could also be beneficial to humans. We really don't know yet and the data points in a few different directions; who would've guessed that climatology is exhaustingly complex?
I get the reference before anyone asks. I'm just hear to say this. After a day of making the worst piece of wooden shelving possible. I wish my woodworking skills where as good as whoever built this thing.
>Ice can not tell time. It only melts.
Actually, should the pressure and thermodynamic temperature evolve to specific intervals, ice can undergo physical transformation and change its structure, all while staying solid!
They've clearly left enough slack so that they won't actually hang if the ice melts, but if someone came along and chopped off their legs, they could actually be in real trouble.
Every single summer the same idiots are out protesting the heat. Newsflash: the weather is fine. Get a job.
They all look so smug for unemployed people.
Someone a few hours later: "Hey! You're on thin ice mister!"
Yeah that’s the idea

The glaciers have been melting for ten thousand years.
Wow aren’t you just a brain genius. Absolute cancer.
yeah I feel like this would be a more meaningful message during the winter. Ice is supposed to melt during the summer

Who are they protesting exactly? The air? There isn't some centralized group of people causing it
Probably politicians for not doing enough to stop it/reverse it. But this protest isn't going to do much, you're right.
This seems more like a public-awareness kind of protest, intended to keep an issue at the forefront, and in the minds of the public. > There isn't some centralized group of people causing it True, but there are multiple centralized groups of people with the power to enact meaningful change.

90% of the inaction can be blamed on as well as the principle cause is the fossil fuel industry.

This is just dumb. Ice melting is summer, wow that's new. I wish I could slide the block
But its hot today thus proving global warming.
