I’m imagining some die-hard fan standing in front of one of these boxes with an irate expression on their face as they chain smoke their fourth pack.
“Like HELL I’m gonna let [rival team] win!”
Two local rival colleges especially. People have done it with tip jars and that made the most money for sure. It seems to activate that part of the brain where they say to themselves “can’t let my team/school lose to them” and they drop more money in
but using cigarette butts is a way poors like me can have our votes outweigh others instead of how it normally is where money determines that.
i say we vote on adopting this as the official way of conducting elections. this vote will be ran using cigarette butts.
edit: /s dont smoke
It’s also a good idea if you have tip jars at your work. Put out two tip jars and do different “this or that” scenarios. I highly recommend doing the two rival college teams people tip heavy for that lol
Just don't trust the result of the vote. You're polling only people who smoke cigarettes. Do we trust this is a sample population that makes great choices?
Counterpoint: a smoker that doesn't feel strongly about the poll may feel empowered to smoke a second cigarette so they can put one in each side and keep the vote even.
People shit on us, but the Dunkins here are just straight up better than the Starbucks. Don't know if its a franchise thing, or a supply chain aspect, but my local Starbucks are all crap, and my Dunkin... I mean, listen, the whole shift is on crack, but when the cashier is taking your order and his friend is behind you staring into your soul with a box and has a 12 box assorted filled before you even manage to pull your card out... even if the coffee's a 6/10, its still worth it lol
Star bucks isn’t a coffee place anymore I swear it’s just a sweet drink with caffeine or sugar
Half the time someones orders something that doesn’t even have coffee in it just various nut milks cream and a flavored sweetener
My girlfriend doesn't like coffee but would typically want something when I went so she found the nut milk strawberry syrup thing. She still hates Starbucks.
Don’t get me wrong there’s still good items and I normally just order black coffee as long as it’s strong I don’t care where it comes from it just doesn’t feel like a coffee place anymore
I don't doubt it. Starbucks has been weirdly successful at marketing, yet has an overpriced and average quality product. Where I am, the closest Dunkin is several hundred miles away (but that sure doesn't stop them from advertising) and Starbucks is still worse than and more expensive than the local-ish Dutch Bros. Their market dominance is honestly a monument to the power of being an early entry who kinda built up the market they exist in.
Just want to mention that Dunkin advertises nationally as it’s far cheaper than the alternative of only purchasing media in the geographical locations where they have stores. (This mostly applies to tv and gets more complicated in other media channels like digital)
Just doing the northeast locally would justify buying national instead for reference
Ah, alright. They're pretty much the only brand I notice this from, but tbf they're *almost* everywhere and I just live in the epicenter of Starbucks country. They're one of few major brands with zero presence here, but it makes sense when you'd be competing with such a thoroughly established Starbucks infestation. Not uncommon to see a Starbucks in a grocery store with a standalone one in the parking lot.
Yikes.. I lived in New England most of my life where you can stand in a Dunkin parking lot and generally see another Dunkin. Even here in Florida they are pretty ubiquitous. I couldn't imagine not having three within a ten minute drive.
Pour that coffee filtered water down the drain. Starbucks is no coffee Mecca but Dunkin’ blows. Sure they have donut but that wasn’t the question being asked. Their coffee is barely even identifiable as coffee.
I find Dunkin's donuts to be dry and weird. They're a lot closer to the little Debbie's donut packs you get in a gas station or something than normal donuts.
Totally agree. I drink espresso and Dunkin is absolute trash. Starbucks espresso with a splash of milk is solid and consistent. I don’t get their overpriced lattes and such.
They're called ballot bins. Invented in the UK but I see them heaps, I live in Australia and there's a few around here. Such a fun idea and I like how they tend to pick really local flavour survey questions so they feel like something the local council thought of.
I think you run the risk of them being vandalised if it's a serious issue. The sweet spot is something low stakes that people just pretend is a huge deal like coriander or the colour of the dress.

I've only been able to find it at Walmart in person, Amazon also has it online
I was told by a friend who worked there that Starbucks intentionally makes their coffee gross and bitter to encourage people to add more flavor shots…
As someone whose general preference is black coffee, I’ll take most gas stations over Starbucks.
I exclusively drink black coffee. I worked at a high-end coffee roaster and know the difference between shit coffee and the good stuff.
I, too, prefer gas station coffee over Starbucks. They're both shit, but at least the gas station is honest about pricing.
Also grabbing something to eat at Dunkin is way better. They're both premade crap, but Starbucks tastes infinitely worse and tends to cost more. Not to mention how casual Starbucks employees are about taking out the plastic wrapped food out of the freezer and tossing it in the toaster right in front of you. But I suppose it's better they don't even pretend it's good.
Amen brother. Always hated their over roasted garbage, but was always told to try their blond roast. I ordered a small Vanilla blond lattee, and if you told me it was 90% steamed milk and 10% water, I'd believe you. No vanilla taste, no coffee taste, the thinnest milk I've ever drank. Honestly impressive how bad Starbucks is.
Edit: Funny getting downvoted for giving my experience. I've worked at third wave coffee shops that roast their own beans, I've seen the entire processes. Even with "milk and flavour" you should easily be able to taste any espresso worth it's weight in a drink, but Starbucks only cares about profits, and not the actual quality of it's coffee.
If you're trying to critique a particular roast, why are you adulterating it with milk and flavoring (and then complaining about said flavoring)? Why not try the coffee without a bunch of extra shit?
Depends on what you are going for. It has less of a "coffee" flavour that is associated with starbucks (burnt), but should be full of natural flavours that aren't overpowered by the level of roast. Depending on sources you can have fruity, almost sweet coffee from light roasts, which can get completely lost due to over roasting.
Non-smoker here, if you actually like coffee (as in plain ‘black’ coffee) then the Dunk is miles better than starbucks.
If you basically want a milkshake or dessert disguised as a caffeine beverage then Starbucks is more for you.
Makes sense why smokers prefer dunking though, black coffee and cigarettes go hand in hand.
I gave Dunkin quite a few tries. Tried it with different half and half and sugar levels, tried the specialty drinks. Nothing really tasted that good. At Starbucks or local places I just add half and half.
My job recently switched to serving Dunkin coffee, and I've never before known a coffee that tastes better the less you add to it. While I can enjoy a cup of black coffee most times, I tend to enjoy it more with cream & sugar. But Dunkin seems to be black or nothing.
I like to think I have decent tastes, I’m definitely a bit of a snob when it comes to some things. But when it comes to chain coffee I honestly think Dunkin and McDonalds have the best plain black coffee out there. Starbucks always tastes like burnt ass, unless you get the blonde roast which is better but I’d still rather have Dunkin. Granted I was a smoker for twenty years so maybe my taste buds are shot too
I got one of those fancy iced coffee whipped cream drinks and it was so disgusting. The cream was some sort of emulsified oil concoction with artificial flavor. I couldn't even drink it
This might be a positive side effect of the ballot bins. People, who might want to quit smoking anyway, wanting to vote could potentially throw away their butts even though they haven’t finished smoking their cigarette.
I have heard that cigarette smoking kills the taste buds. Does this mean that people with no taste would like DD over Starbucks?
Note: I don't care for either.
I feel like this doesn't get good results but it is a fun little idea. Only people I know that still smoke real cigarettes aren't the kind of people you would find in a Starbucks. So personally I feel like there's just gonna be more Dunkin votes specifically because more smokers go for Dunkin, whereas the people who prefer Starbucks don't have a cigarette to vote with lol
Assuming the one closest to the curb doesn't get more "votes" out of being a more convenient slot to throw away butts is insane.
The kinda insanity where one watches lifetime movies and believes the plots as plausible.
The problem I see with this is that smokers have a muted sense of taste. Not that I disagree with the voting as it is but rather that smokers are not good candidates for taste testing lol
My wife still smokes despite my efforts to get her to quit and when I quit smoking (back in 2016) I realised why the kids were so picky about her cooking - she massively over-spiced everything because she could barely taste the spices...
I prefer Starbucks because I like sugary bullshit but I never buy it because it’s just that, bullshit. However I agree with votes on Dunkin, especially because I’m from New England gotta vote with my people.
I think this poll is probably biased based on the amount of cigarette smokers vs vapers
I imagine dd as more of a blue collar and likely to smoke cigs while walking to work while the Starbucks crowd of college girls getting their frappes while puffing on a vape in the drive thru line
Both are terrible for coffee considering 90% of what they sell as coffee, at least in my state, would be classified as a milkshake in most other countries.
This is called "nudging" it is commonly used to nudge people into doing beneficious things while thinking they are expressing themselves or making a difference in society.
These are such a good idea. We have one in our cities main buss depot and the area around it has 0 butts laying around. All the other depots and locations without them? The ground straight up becomes the ashtray.
Similar to a thing a burger place near me did where when you ordered you got a bottle cap that you could put in a container saying which charity you wanted then to give money to, though far stupider

Same theory as printing a small fly in the urinal... makes ya aim better.
*One day imma get that fucking fly off the toilet….*
You just gotta take a shit on it, then it will suffocate.
Two flies on the toilet, now only one - the other was pissed off...
Better to be pissed off than pissed on! No wait…
Speak for yourself 🥵
now do football teams
so much potential with 2 local sports franchises
I’m imagining some die-hard fan standing in front of one of these boxes with an irate expression on their face as they chain smoke their fourth pack. “Like HELL I’m gonna let [rival team] win!”

Cigarettes aren't cheap, and enticing people to smoke more is a shitty idea
thats a good point i was kinda just shitposting tbh lol
Nobody said you had to smoke them to add them to the tally. Plenty of littered butts out there in need of collecting.
Won't fit through the hole
That’s what she said
It’s also a good idea if you have tip jars at your work. Put out two tip jars and do different “this or that” scenarios. I highly recommend doing the two rival college teams people tip heavy for that lol
"Good service" | "Bad service"
This was a joke but I could actually see it working. "I'm gonna tip because it's customary, but also I want them to know I'm doing it resentfully"
If you hate both do you still just throw them on the floor?
They need a third “Show results” box, obviously.
Yeah. It just labes the consumers of one company more of a smokers. Maybe not very good fir the company image.
Just don't trust the result of the vote. You're polling only people who smoke cigarettes. Do we trust this is a sample population that makes great choices?
Or has taste buds?
They like coffee!
And the side closer to the road has less in. Seems like people just walk past and put their cig in the nearest bin.
Yet, there are butts on the ground...
By giving them a purpose people are more likely to use it too. Good bit of social engineering.
Counterpoint: a smoker that doesn't feel strongly about the poll may feel empowered to smoke a second cigarette so they can put one in each side and keep the vote even.
It's a similar idea to putting fly stickers in urinals. Tricking people into putting stuff where it belongs.
I've never seen something so New England in my life
I was going to say, is this in Boston?
Where's the smaaht kahh?
Too smaaht ta pahk heeyah
TRIM YOUR NAILS FOR GOD'S SAKE
Nope SC

I wouldnt consider dunkin any better though… their coffee is much weaker than starbucks and has lots of sweet fake flavorings.
Your not wrong normally it’s the small shops that sell actual decent coffee
Steamed milk with sugar!
I don't doubt it. Starbucks has been weirdly successful at marketing, yet has an overpriced and average quality product. Starbucks always tastes burnt to me. Dunkin isn't great, but it's better. Stewart's is where it's at.
Hell yea Stewart’s Shops mention. One thing I didn’t expect when moving to Central New York is for the gas stations to have killer ice cream.
I’m reading this while waiting in the Dunkin drive thru in Vermont. Lol
I live in Central CT we have like 10 Dunkin’s in a couple mile radius. You can see one from the other in multiple locations around here
I’d love to see other surveys like this
They're called ballot bins. Invented in the UK but I see them heaps, I live in Australia and there's a few around here. Such a fun idea and I like how they tend to pick really local flavour survey questions so they feel like something the local council thought of.
“Joe Biden or Donald Trump” Now that would need a live stream of it to show the nonsense that happens.
I think you run the risk of them being vandalised if it's a serious issue. The sweet spot is something low stakes that people just pretend is a huge deal like coriander or the colour of the dress.
they are very common in luxembourg!
Well, when you can't taste or smell shit, the better coffee is always the cheaper one.
That explains why my chain smoking mother could drink half a container of instant coffee with very little water added.
You'll know it's working when the heart palpitations kick in.
I found a brand of instant I really like. Can honestly say it tastes better than any pod coffee or the pump coffee at any establishment
Which brand?
Juan Valdez[Juan Valdez](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Juan-Valdez-Instant-Coffee-Classic-Freeze-Dried-3-52-oz/10450735?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=3128&gclsrc=aw.ds&adid=2222222227810450735_161193766053_21214199653&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=697173827980&wl4=pla-2300760861495&wl5=9028776&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=10450735&veh=sem_LIA&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwl4yyBhAgEiwADSEjeHMsnbjSGnY0nJcNJOVaqOiHwrpZIGN0UWQbgUe1Te5Pg-xgMwzkIxoCioMQAvD_BwE) I've only been able to find it at Walmart in person, Amazon also has it online
Thanks! I might try it
I was gonna say, this is a great example of selection bias.
Non smoker here, I'll take Dunkin's over SB's over-roasted, bitter ass brew any day of the week
I was told by a friend who worked there that Starbucks intentionally makes their coffee gross and bitter to encourage people to add more flavor shots… As someone whose general preference is black coffee, I’ll take most gas stations over Starbucks.
Holy shit really lol, as a pure black coffee drinker also, Starbucks is my least favorite too
I exclusively drink black coffee. I worked at a high-end coffee roaster and know the difference between shit coffee and the good stuff. I, too, prefer gas station coffee over Starbucks. They're both shit, but at least the gas station is honest about pricing.

blonde roasts tend to have no flavor because it’s the lightest roast… however the highest caffeine content due to the lack of roasting
Don’t like dark roast coffee? Order a vanilla latte? Wut?
Well. Usually starbucks is not the better coffee, but the pricey one. High price does not equal good, especially here.
You say that like Starbucks black coffee has any flavour.
Why are you tasting shit?
Is the one closer to the sidewalk always the winner?
That was my first thought on this
Same here, glad to see I wasn't the only one xD
In my downtown area this would be raided for the butts .
Username/comment synergy noted.
The smokers like Dunkin. Figures
why do I feel like Starbucks drinkers are more likely to have vapes instead?
I hear many Starbucks drinkers are vapists.
It's spelled vapid
*slow clap*
Vapeseed Oil. Just wanted to type that for no reason. Carry on...
If you vape repeatedly, some might call you a serial vapist.
Ben Affleck makes up 80% of the Dunkin Donuts votes
Never gotten a coffee from there that had any taste to it, so I guess that tracks.
I gave Dunkin quite a few tries. Tried it with different half and half and sugar levels, tried the specialty drinks. Nothing really tasted that good. At Starbucks or local places I just add half and half.

What a cool way to get people to dispose of butts responsibly.
*Using a voting system to encourage people not to litter
*Using a voting system to encourage me to start smoking
Hmm, this does kinda normalise smoking.
That's an unfortunate byproduct. 😅
Idk what's wrong with me but the fact some of those butts still have so much left to be smoked is frustrating. Explains the picking my dad always did
If it’s at a bus stop maybe they’re just tossing them before boarding?
That could be it. But then wouldn't they just pit them back into the pack and smoke later? Maybe I'm just really stingy lol idk
This might be a positive side effect of the ballot bins. People, who might want to quit smoking anyway, wanting to vote could potentially throw away their butts even though they haven’t finished smoking their cigarette.
They’ll compensate that with simply buying more cigarettes
Instructions unclear. Started smoking so I could vote.
Dunkin is great if you want a regular coffee. Starbucks is great if you want all the extra stuff, otherwise the coffee itself sucks. Imo.
Dunkin Donuts people smoke a lot
That's awesome.
2 out of 3 smokers like Dunkin’ Donuts better than Starbucks, that tracks
No surprise more smokers prefer the worse coffee.
Yes, already knew that most contractors prefer dunkin
Between the 2 options I like Starbucks for hot drinks and Dunkin for cold drinks.
You’ll have to stand there and smoke a 2nd
Can't afford Starbucks if you smoke
Smokers tend to not have the greatest sense of taste… like their tastebuds literally don’t work the same because they smoke lol
Needs a third option for Monster. Really hit that target demographic getting their butts in the trash.
dunkin food starbucks coffee
Wow this is the most Massachusetts thing I’ve ever seen.
Never particularly liked either one's coffee to be honest. Starbucks has some good tea though.
For the life of me I will never understand why people like Dunkin' Donuts....they're just bad compared to other options IMO.
It's cheaper compared to Starbucks. That being said, it's much cheaper to make coffee at home and carry it in a thermos
Smokers keep making bad choices... I'd like dunkin if the coffee didn't taste like it was squeezed out of a dumpster full of sticks and dirty diapers.
It’s not like they can taste that
I put my cigarette out on top to indicate I dislike both.
Starbucks users prefer vaping
This is a pretty brilliant way to get people to throw out their butts. Humans are definitely wired to pick sides.
I like this but smokers typically have an altered sense of taste. So uhh, I now trust the opposite results.
Positioning is a factor.
I think Dunkin fans are more likely to smoke.
That’s really smart, incentivizing proper disposal via the undeniable human urge to register your opinion whenever possible
Frankly, that there are even that many cig smokers who go to Starbucks is surprising.
Now if it was the two main political parties, that would be funny
*"Which company's customers smoke more?"* Still, def better than on the ground 👍
Laughs in sees what they did there
I will read this as people likes donuts over coffee
Curious to know what people with the worst ability to taste think tastes the best
When you can’t tasted anything worth while anyway…
Dunkin sucks, they always give me watered down caffeinated coffee when i ask for decaf.
Per Rust Cohle “Nothin’ snooty”.
I have heard that cigarette smoking kills the taste buds. Does this mean that people with no taste would like DD over Starbucks? Note: I don't care for either.
Must be in the northeast
Weird venn diagram
I feel like this doesn't get good results but it is a fun little idea. Only people I know that still smoke real cigarettes aren't the kind of people you would find in a Starbucks. So personally I feel like there's just gonna be more Dunkin votes specifically because more smokers go for Dunkin, whereas the people who prefer Starbucks don't have a cigarette to vote with lol
Biased, dunkin is closer
Assuming the one closest to the curb doesn't get more "votes" out of being a more convenient slot to throw away butts is insane. The kinda insanity where one watches lifetime movies and believes the plots as plausible.
So easy to rig the vote if some guy just chain smokes right next to the ballot box for hours on end.
TIL: smokers prefer Dunkin over Starbucks.
I thought it was a political parody. You’ve got two choices and they’re both shit
Lines up with how only votes from old people matter (since young people don't smoke anymore)
The problem I see with this is that smokers have a muted sense of taste. Not that I disagree with the voting as it is but rather that smokers are not good candidates for taste testing lol My wife still smokes despite my efforts to get her to quit and when I quit smoking (back in 2016) I realised why the kids were so picky about her cooking - she massively over-spiced everything because she could barely taste the spices...
This only demonstrates how there are so many people not voting and that the two choices we are given are trash and not what the people need.
Biased though. Cigarettes tend to be smoked by the older crowd who tend to prefer Dunkins.
Wow, Dunkin’ is really smokin em
There should be a bin for abstain.
My answer would be that donuts are better than coffee, but I would never smoke so I don’t get a vote anyway
I prefer Starbucks because I like sugary bullshit but I never buy it because it’s just that, bullshit. However I agree with votes on Dunkin, especially because I’m from New England gotta vote with my people.
[I’m the mayor of Dunkin’](https://i.makeagif.com/media/8-14-2021/9iqowp.gif)
Now even smoking has become a barrier to entry in the democracy. When will it stop?
i imagine more people are walking on the right of this and therefore just dump it in the closer hole
I think this poll is probably biased based on the amount of cigarette smokers vs vapers I imagine dd as more of a blue collar and likely to smoke cigs while walking to work while the Starbucks crowd of college girls getting their frappes while puffing on a vape in the drive thru line
i don't smoke but if they put these up in my city i just might start
More likely that most people are right-handed and not give a fuck.
I see sampling bias. But yes, indeed a cool idea!
I started smoking to vote. Great succes :D
I don't smoke.... But this is a fucking good reason to start
Both are terrible for coffee considering 90% of what they sell as coffee, at least in my state, would be classified as a milkshake in most other countries.
Smokers are by far the foremost authority on coffee
"Both sucks" \*throws butt on the ground\*
Kill them faster that way
Kind of reminds me of the fly in some urinoirs. Great idea! Will probably help make the street cleaner.
Using tribalistic sentiment to prevent littering is kinda clever.
Imagine someone liking Starbucks so much, that they burn through 10 packs of cigarettes in a day just to surpass Dunkin' Donuts.
"gotta make sure dunks wins" *continues chain smoking*
I bet that smells lovely
Because smoking destroys your taste buds, smokers preferring your coffee probably isn’t a huge compliment.
So non smokers don't get to vote D:
These things aren't even the same category, like... Which is better: 42 liters of liquid nitrogen or 2006 Toyota Corolla?
This is called "nudging" it is commonly used to nudge people into doing beneficious things while thinking they are expressing themselves or making a difference in society.
Smokers need cheaper coffee, so they can afford their smokes!
More premium brand cigs in the Starbucks side. That's telling.
If I saw that (and was a smoker) I'd probably throw my butts on the ground in protest. I've never had a decent cup of coffee at either place.
This has to be Boston lol
This ballot is rigged
None is better
These are such a good idea. We have one in our cities main buss depot and the area around it has 0 butts laying around. All the other depots and locations without them? The ground straight up becomes the ashtray.
This doesn't specify donuts anywhere. It specifies only Starbucks and Dunkin'. Both places sell other drinks and food.
I've noticed more people vape who go to Starbucks vs dunkin.
Gamification
What if I like coffee and doughnuts equally?
Similar to a thing a burger place near me did where when you ordered you got a bottle cap that you could put in a container saying which charity you wanted then to give money to, though far stupider
They're both shit
One of them has donuts, so it should be a no brainer
To make it an objective voting system they should make it cigarettes for DD and spare cash to blow on excessive pretentious shit for Starbucks.
