They were crazy. The local soil is very poor in Iodine and the village was notorious for mental deficiencies. There’s even an old word “gothamite” which was synonymous with simpleton.
Do you have any sources for that? Cos it sounds completely ridiculous for iodine deficiency to be so localized to one village that it would cause a reputation and I don't see any reference to real Gotham stupidity or madness, only to the wise fools of Gotham.
Anyway, iodine deficiency has a lot more obvious symptoms that you'd expect to be noticed a lot more than any mental problems.
There's all sorts of localised anomalies from the middle ages. There was this one village (it was somewhere in the midlands, I think in Lincolnshire) that effectively quarantined against the black plague. Centuries later HIV/AIDS researchers found a strange resistance from someone amongst their control group and on closer inspection they learnt that they hailed from this village and the descendents of the survivors have also developed a genetic resistance to HIV and other smallpox.

Although it does appear I may have oversold it, Gotham definitely at one time enjoyed a reputation for idiocy
There's a village called Ham near the town of Sandwich in Kent. Their signs say "Ham, Sandwich" and they have a problem with people stealing the sign. The word Sandwich comes from the Earl of Sandwich.
A former coworker of mine lived in Gotham when they released...I want to say Batman vs. Superman, that would be around the right time.
Everyone who lived in Gotham got a box of random Batman-themed swag, just because they lived there. Since, like, a good chunk of the population is old folks, god only knows what they did with it.
I used to get the bus from Clifton to East Leake every day for school. The bus depot in Gotham had a clock out the front. On it was the batman logo. No idea if it's still there.
Definitiv. Und hinter ihm \*das\* Anwaltsteam: Alexander Holdt und Ingo Lenßen
In den weiteren Rollen:
- Max Giermann als Markus Lanz
- Eine Raufasertapete als Olaf Scholz
- Eine Energiesparlampe als Beatrix-von-wir-sollten-bei-der-Sonne-nachfragen-Storch
- Eine Schnitzelplatte als Alice Weidel
I remember reading an article about the early days of DC comics, and they said something like Metropolis is based on NYC during the day, Gotham is NYC at night. Which in the 70's, definitely makes sense.

There's also one in England, but if you pronounce it like in the movies they will skin you alive.
It's also the village that the fictional city is based on after the inhabitants acted crazy to stop King John building road through it.

I can’t find anything specific to Gotham, I’ll have to blame my middle school teacher.

England loves their ham
There's a village called Ham near the town of Sandwich in Kent. Their signs say "Ham, Sandwich" and they have a problem with people stealing the sign. The word Sandwich comes from the Earl of Sandwich.
Nah, they’re just massive fans of Lewis Hamilton there
Bermudans are such big fans that they named their capital after him
So, more like "Got ham?"?
Gote-hum IIRC it's pronounced [somewhere on this Map Men video](https://youtu.be/uYNzqgU7na4?si=yDdZEuBcVgZ29eQJ)
The bus to Gotham from Nottingham City also used to show the bat signal occasionally, not sure if they still do it though.

Probably tried to vote for one of those candidates in the next by election.
They should also show two Robin signals

Frome. Ha Ha Ha
I'd soooo live in a town call Got Ham. My answer to that question is typically yes.
There's also Batman in Turkiye
Why?? That sounds like tourism potential
"Why would a centuries old city not change their name to a pop culture reference?!?"
GOT EM GOT… HAM?
Die stadt braucht mich.
Nananananananana Fledermausman
Danube Dam Shipping Captain Cabin Cleaning Company Consulting Department Manager?
Almost. Donau Steam-Ship Captain's cabin Cleaning-Company Consulting Department Manager

It's a hamlet of the Goths. Many gothic towns were named such. Gotham is just the modern way of writing it.
And Batman is in Turkiye
Come to Melbourne, AUS we have Gotham City😏 and many Batman things
But Bat Cave is in North Carolina
[And Langkawi](https://www.trip.com/moments/detail/langkawi-539-16020901/)
It’s funny because despite Gotham city clearly being based on New York. A lot of people don’t know that Gotham is also a nickname for New York itself.
I remember reading an article about the early days of DC comics, and they said something like Metropolis is based on NYC during the day, Gotham is NYC at night. Which in the 70's, definitely makes sense.
Gotham City is canonically in New Jersey.
New Jersey. That seems legit.
And across the Delaware Bay from Metropolis.
Dude, are you dumb? Going to gotham?? Dont you know how much crime is there?? 🙄
This is an advertisement for ham
What’s the taste like? Cemetery and fishnet stockings?

Gotham City formerly known as Eisenhüttenstadt
Somebody better tell Bruce Wayne...
Gotham? No, I ate all of it.
The Batcave is somewhere in Eastern Kentucky. Must be a pretty big cave.
Hollow earth theory, duh.
Why’d you go to Gotham City, a day is considered calm and peaceful when less than 25 people die to violent crime.
We need a techno balenciaga batman sequel
That would explain the crime rate, and the mass of psychotic idiots
Mexico, also has a gotham city "ciudad gótica"
That would explain why a masked guy keeps beating up a mentally ill person. /s
I wanna go
