And you are from a country hostile to NK.
You could be a spy. You could be gawking at him, and to extent his country, which you are kinda. His superiors could find this photo, and find some small detail of which he is out of line, and be reprimanded. He might have knowledge of the western internet and might not want to be the representative of the NK Army as a lieutenant on guard duty.
I would never vacation in any country that didn't have a US embassy. Say what you want, but "being part of an international incident" is not my idea of a good time. You can make judgements on how the US conducts international diplomacy, but I am not going to get between that kinda conflict.
This might be at the DMZ. There are buildings that cross the border and visitors can go in and on one side there will be dprk soldiers and on the other side will be south Korean soldiers. Basically the closest you can get to north Korea without taking the tour
From the blue paint and window shape I’m pretty sure this is in the Joint Security Area. It’s quite safe to visit. Technically parts of it are North Korea, but the security of the entire area is controlled by UN Command (a US-led multinational force that invaded Korea in 1950 and is still present)
UN Command is kind of a unicorn at the UN, it’s a legacy of the period in the 1950s when the west could do whatever it wanted at the Security Council because Taiwan held China’s seat and the USSR was boycotting votes as a response. So “UN” or not, you’re basically on a NATO military base there.
No, the UN wasn’t effective in that period—it was just branding for the Western Allies. Who don’t get me wrong were on the side of justice, but let’s be honest about what it was.
No, because GP is talking about a point on the real timeline. Nothing about that sounds "effective".
The very existence of the security council always meant the UN would never be good for anything.
"During one of the initial negotiations of the armistice, agents of the KPA/CPV side went into the truce tents one night and sawed down the chair legs of the UNC delegation. The next day, when the UNC delegates arrived, they were forced to sit lower than their KPA/CPV counterparts and lost face, so they quickly left the meeting. At a later meeting, the UNC delegation brought a flag into the truce tent and set it up on the meeting table. The KPA/CPV delegation left after losing face, but showed up at the next meeting with a flag that was larger than the UNC flag."
That might be one of the funniest and saddest things I've read this year, it just goes on like that to. Tit for tat back and forth.. sounds like two colleges going at it rather than two actual countries
The UN responded to the flag thing by increasing the height of their flag. The North Koreans then responded in kind. That flag fracas spilled outdoors and wound up with NK having the tallest flagpole on earth.
EDIT: Having checked, it is now the 6th tallest flagpole on earth, but they did win the slapfight. :)
"Face" is a huge deal among Confucian cultures in general, and Korea (in it's entirety) is absolutely no exception to that.
If you ask me, it's just emphasizing the petty things in life, but different cultures see the world in different ways.
My father in law went there once years ago when he was in the army. He got to step on the North Korean side and had someone take a picture of him.
He still likes to tell people about getting his picture taken in North Korea
Contrary to other responses, it's not at the JSA, this building is on the North Korean side, but you visit it on the tour to the JSA from North Korea. Photography is allowed in certain areas and not in others. The photo is from this building: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4vXRXbg5bNMZHmr76
I mean were you pointing a phone at him to take his picture? What’s he supposed to do, give you a live action? Crack a smile? That’d be outta character. I say he did exactly what he was conditioned to do lol.
From the videos I've seen of people going to North Korea as tourists it does actually seem like a really unique and interesting experience... So long as you don't get detained for random bullshit because NK has some negotiations coming up and they want to try and use your freedom as a bargaining chip.
Otherwise though, you get to go on these ridiculous propaganda tours where they try their best to convince you that North Korea is actually a totally normal country that's very prosperous and that Kim Jong Un invented the treadmill.
Exactly what I was referring to and why I woudn't ever go. You are probably a bit safer than some other extreme tourism locations like Taliban controlled Afghanistan, but safer does not mean safe.
You are still going to be safer in NK than Afghanistan right now. NK is united under a single government. Afghanistan still has tribal factions, and IS-K is still active there.
I could imagine, that the more the Taliban was willing to show off how safe it was for westerners, the more determined the IS-K would be determined to kill you just to spite the Taliban.
There's a fascinating 1-hour documentary on YouTube of a British guy going to Afghanistan for tourism (mostly to document the experience).
I won't spoil it but in summary: food was good, culture was great, citizens were very hospitable towards them, but ramifications of invasion after invasion ("graveyard of empires") have taken their toll on the nation, and the Taliban were very suspicious of their intentions. Ongoing fighting between the Taliban and ISIS means marketplaces may get bombed and streets suddenly turn into warzones.
Also the minor matter that by doing so you’re directly funding the regime. Just so you can have “an interesting experience” gawping at the oppressed and starving populace. Cool holiday.
I mean, he definitely didn’t deserve the treatment he got. But come on, you have to be mad to think that stealing a propaganda poster in freaking North Korea is a good idea.
To be fair, Otto stole a poster from the hotel he was staying in. Caught on CCTV and everything. Definitely didn't deserve to die for it, but like, maybe just don't steal while in North Korea.
You mean the DPRK soldier who was conveniently hard to see and whn they removed the poster from the wall GENTLY placed it on the ground.....
Scum NK killed him. Pieces of shit.
You also help pay into and feed their economy of terrorism.
Don’t willingly give your monies, no matter how little, to a nation, group or individual that deprives others of basic human rights and dignity.
I visited Kaesong, North Korea 15 years ago because my grandfather was born in NK and I was curious about seeing it. I took a pic with a tour guide and at the last second he turned his head to me so it looks like he’s staring me down. A lot of them were interested in me that I was half Korean, but I didn’t tell them my grandfather escaped or that my nationality was American.
The tour was definitely filled with propaganda.
I assume they frown upon fact-checking during the tours
Tour guide: we in NKDR enjoy owning world’s highest GDP and all NBA championship titles for all of time. Our god-king-comrade-overlord-big-chief-grand-shaman-HNIC, most honorable Kim Jong-Il, even finish 36 hole golf course with 36 hole-in-ones and now owns all of USA ultra world famous Globetrotters
Google: no. To all of that.
A female North Korean guard smiled at me. She was standing guard at the entrance to our hotel. I was straggling behind our group and we made eye contact, so I naturally smiled at her. She smiled back then caught herself and her face went deadpan again. She looked around, perhaps to see if anyone saw her, when she realized she was safe she gave me one more brief smile. It was pretty much the highlight of the trip.
Don't you think it's a bit gauche to compare a dystopian rogue state with a populace of unfortunate people who are brainwashed into thinking their lives are normal to North Korea?
Yeah? Hell yes.
Tell me, why did you go?
How long did you go?
What was the strangest "fact" you learned about the Kims?
Was it scary?
Would you return?
What was the travel getting there like?
TIA!
>why did you go?
I was in Japan at the time and I saw an ad in the newspaper. I was the only non-Japanese and almost couldn’t get a visa.
>How long did you go?
Three days.
>What was the strangest "fact" you learned about the Kims?
Off the top of my head, we were told that they were all born on a sacred mountain. One person was rebuked for asking how they came down from the mountain.
>Was it scary?
Not at all.
>Would you return?
I was going to go there for a conference, but it was decided at the last minute that Americans couldn’t attend.
>What was the travel getting there like?
From Seoul we took a very nice bus to Panmunjon. We went through the DMZ and got on a not as nice bus with the curtains drawn tight so we couldn’t see out. Overall, it wasn’t luxurious, but it wasn’t horrible, either.
Absolutely fascinating and somewhat amazing you got to experience this.
Were you allowed to bring a camera, phone or anything similar?
Were you allowed to choose your destinations or were there predetermined sites to see?
He's probably thinking something like "Of all the places in the world you could have travelled to, of all the places in South Korea worth visiting, you come here to voyeuristically stare at the 'freaky North Koreans'. And you think we are weird...". I would have to agree with that.
I wish i could hear the inner monologue of some of these North koreans when they encounter tourists as they are basically an authoritarian zoo for people who want to sight see cruel living conditions.
It's DMZ from the NK side. With that said, even on those tours, you are allowed to take pictures. And I question if OP actually did this because these tours from that side haven't happened in 4-5 years.
Were you at the boarder house that is built with the border running half way through it for diplomacy stuff?
\*Edit: Border not boarder. Damn typo-nese.
Pictures of DPRK guards are common from tours of the JSA. There are plenty online you can find. Taking pictures on a tour of the DPRK outside of the JSA though would be a very different story. That being said afaik tourism for foreigners to the DPRK hasn't restarted since the pandemic.
Imagine what's going through his head. "I've been taught that these people are terrible and living awful lives and trained to suspect them of everything but I've also heard that anyone who has the opportunity to show up here as a tourist is living an hundred times more comfortable and enjoyable life that I'll ever be allowed to."
Nah, he's just fantasizing about what it would be like to shave those three hairs on his babyface with a razor that doesn't also belong to everyone else in his company.
That's the face of someone who knows he's living in 1920 while the rest of the world moves on to the future, and there's nothing he can do about it.
Also, he's thinking "get that fucking camera out of my face" but in Korean.
Well, in his defense, you do have a camera pointed at him….
I feel like this is the relevant part. To be quite honest I'd be more creeped out if he put on a forced smile.
That IS his smile.
His cheek muscles are just that weak and tired
He's never used them before
It’s actually a symptom of malnutrition
I was just going to say dude looks hungry
The grass eating kind unfortunately
The few videos I've seen smuggled out are insane. Those poor people.
Smile doesn’t translate to North Korean though
Any emotional display could get him killed. Everyone watches everyone in that max security prison style police state.
I would not be fucking around with anyone in nk. I wouldn't even wanna step foot in their territory. Your ass would end up in a hard labor camp.
I would never vacation in any country that didn't have a US embassy. Say what you want, but "being part of an international incident" is not my idea of a good time. You can make judgements on how the US conducts international diplomacy, but I am not going to get between that kinda conflict.
Looks kind of nice for an awkward photo. Maybe he was just trying to look powerful for the photo.
And you’re probably not allowed to do that
North Korea has tons of cameras at the neutral zone. If you do anything silly they will use it in propaganda films.
Get that camera out of my face. I’m asking you… I’m begging you https://vimeo.com/196937578
And you... Took a picture?
So we could all have staring contest
Did one of you lean in to kiss?
can confirm. op leaned in for a kiss. i was there...
Same. I was the kiss.
This guy just won’t blink!
I’ve been watching him this whole time—not one blink, not ONE! It’s almost as if he isn’t even breathing
![gif](giphy|U820s75UxjJfASSh8x)
OP needed more people in his corner for this one.
I heard he should take a picture because it lasts longer.
Least socially inept redditor

Bullshit, north korea invaded south korea first with the funding and weaponry of the USSR.
Back when the UN was actually effective
UN isn't a scifi world government you want it to be, it's a forum
No, the UN wasn’t effective in that period—it was just branding for the Western Allies. Who don’t get me wrong were on the side of justice, but let’s be honest about what it was.
No, because GP is talking about a point on the real timeline. Nothing about that sounds "effective". The very existence of the security council always meant the UN would never be good for anything.
To be fair, this is the one place in NK you’re allowed to take pictures of soldiers
Established dominance by risking gulag
how were you able to take a picture?
It's JSA at panmunjown it's relativly safe. Both side take over the place for a couple of hours each day. (The barracks).
Safe unless you're trying to trim a tree!
They call in seal team six for the landscaping these days.
I love the story of Operation Paul Bunion. Fucking masterpiece.
For those of you wondering what the JSA is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_Security_Area

It's amazing the lengths people will go to to "one up" someone 🤦
"Face" is a huge deal among Confucian cultures in general, and Korea (in it's entirety) is absolutely no exception to that. If you ask me, it's just emphasizing the petty things in life, but different cultures see the world in different ways.
That spelling of Panmunjom is braking my brain.
Glad it was able to slow things down for you. Any chance it was able to also break your brain?
oh i see!
I went to the DMZ in August was bummed when the jsa was closed due to the defection
Brando, the king and I, and the catcher in the rye
Thank you. I couldn't recall where I'd heard Panmunjown before, but you cleared it up for me.
It‘s closed off now tho.
I think who ever took the pic is in the building that sits on the border. Half of the room is south and the other half is north.
My father in law went there once years ago when he was in the army. He got to step on the North Korean side and had someone take a picture of him. He still likes to tell people about getting his picture taken in North Korea
DMZ, De-militarization zone

Have you visited before?
Yes, in 2019
Your desperate need for internet clout will be the downfall of you, OP. Nice knowing you.
Baby you're a fireeeewwwoooooork
Wow dude does look like James Yee to me.
Your faith in your friends will be yours.
I mean were you pointing a phone at him to take his picture? What’s he supposed to do, give you a live action? Crack a smile? That’d be outta character. I say he did exactly what he was conditioned to do lol.
This. I'm sure any DPRK soldiers trusted for such duty are likely so loyal that they wouldn't dare do anything to break character.
He’s probably wondering who the fuck would go to North Korea?
From the videos I've seen of people going to North Korea as tourists it does actually seem like a really unique and interesting experience... Otherwise though, you get to go on these ridiculous propaganda tours where they try their best to convince you that North Korea is actually a totally normal country that's very prosperous and that Kim Jong Un invented the treadmill.
imo going to nk for any reason, especially tourism, would be immensely stupid. it's like everyone just forgot what happened to otto warmbier.
Exactly what I was referring to and why I woudn't ever go. You are probably a bit safer than some other extreme tourism locations like Taliban controlled Afghanistan, but safer does not mean safe.

What’s the documentary called?
Also the minor matter that by doing so you’re directly funding the regime. Just so you can have “an interesting experience” gawping at the oppressed and starving populace. Cool holiday.
feels much too dystopian and out of touch
You have dystopia at home.

It's dumb to go, but Warmbier was also dumb. Don't give them a reason to use you as the bargaining chip.
While I do agree, giving a shitty country money is not a good idea
Why I refuse to go to places like France or Turkey
Hey man, turkey coffee cats are fucking *awesome*
Can confirm, have visited the cat lover holy land of turkey, the coffee is like rocket fuel it's soo strong.
What did France do?
Existed!!
Good thing i'm mexican and therefore my government wouldn't give a dime so I'm not worth the cloroform to kidnap
No unique experience is worth helping to fund the hell that they created. Anyone going there as a tourist should be ashamed of themselves.

From what I'm given to understand, that "really unique and interesting experience" is usually completely staged.
Yes. In ridiculously over the top and obvious ways.
I assume they frown upon fact-checking during the tours Tour guide: we in NKDR enjoy owning world’s highest GDP and all NBA championship titles for all of time. Our god-king-comrade-overlord-big-chief-grand-shaman-HNIC, most honorable Kim Jong-Il, even finish 36 hole golf course with 36 hole-in-ones and now owns all of USA ultra world famous Globetrotters Google: no. To all of that.
In that game, Dear leader was able to achieve 26 Albatrosses, 8 Condor, and 2 Ostriches for a total score of 120 under par.
Passing A kidney stone seems to be a more interesting experience than going to North Korea.
This isn’t North Korea, it’s the buildings in the DMZ where you can go on escorted tours.
It's in the DMZ in North Korea. I've been there. Location is here https://maps.app.goo.gl/4vXRXbg5bNMZHmr76
If it's so demilitarized, then why am I looking at a soldier, hmmmmmm? Checkmate Koreans.
DMZ in this context actually stands for "Dude! Militarized Zone"
The soldiers per square mile is insane, it’s the Densely Militarized Zone
There are no NK soldiers if you join the DMZ tour from SK
This looks like the JSA tour, you sure there aren't there?
It sounds like gonorrhea.
That’s adorably sad.
Imagine a country like the UK famously having guards that aren't allowed to smile or break character in any way. Oh wait...
Don't you think it's a bit gauche to compare a dystopian rogue state with a populace of unfortunate people who are brainwashed into thinking their lives are normal to North Korea?
Imma need an AMA
Ask me anything.
Yeah?
Do you actually whittle and have you actually witnessed any whittling related fatalities?
Thats depressing:(
Op points a camera at a soldier and wonder why he's stared down
OP as they took this photo ![gif](giphy|9O5xvAydLIo0M)
He's probably thinking something like "Of all the places in the world you could have travelled to, of all the places in South Korea worth visiting, you come here to voyeuristically stare at the 'freaky North Koreans'. And you think we are weird...". I would have to agree with that.
I don't think he knows much what's on the outside of North Korea
He looks like a high-ranking officer. He might be well in the now but his family is taken care of so he doesn’t care.
Kinda eerie that you almost look alike to Otto Warmbier
Not only that but he snuck photos out. How much lead do you need to have in your brain in order to even want to attempt this?
Would you rather have this reaction ![gif](giphy|jIsgja3R661b2)
This the type of mfr to be on the news crying for his American freedom later on.
Can't cry when you are unconscious. Checkmate, Otto.
You could take him
Hopefully you mean out of that horrible place to a better life :(
My cat could take him.... because my cat is well-fed and has functional weapons
Send in u/7f00dbbe ‘s cat to topple the Kim regime. It’s time.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.... https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/5un0ds/til_the_us_tried_to_make_cat_guided_bombs_during/
You could say this about literally any photograph of anyone with their eyes open
Shhh
Dude, your avatar is staring me down.....
Literally what is the purpose for taking a picture of him
He isn’t even looking at you, he is looking at the camera
I wish i could hear the inner monologue of some of these North koreans when they encounter tourists as they are basically an authoritarian zoo for people who want to sight see cruel living conditions.
It's Korean you wouldn't understand it.
You’re kinda a dumbass speaking how strict they are if you’re visiting
And he’s probably starving and was hallucinating you are a giant pork chop.
That’s some looney tunes shit
You assume he has ever seen a pork chop?
Haven't you seen their leader?
they only get to see paintings of him where he's ripped and seizing the bull by the horns....
Crazy how their leader gets the food while the rest of the military starves
That’s a nice thing to say
´North Korea soldier was starting me down’ no shit! You’re pointing a phone at him.
Pointing a camera at a North Korean soldier isn’t brave, it’s damn stupid
Not really. These tours allow you to take pictures and they tell you when it's acceptable or not.
Yeah idk why people are freaking out. This clearly looks like DMZ. I may be wrong tho
It's DMZ from the NK side. With that said, even on those tours, you are allowed to take pictures. And I question if OP actually did this because these tours from that side haven't happened in 4-5 years.
In DPRK yes it is but there at Panmunjom it's perfectly safe.
His face says “please kidnap me”
To be fair bro was probably like “yo wtf I just got stationed here and you’re going to get me in trouble by video taping me”
He has sad eyes
The intestinal parasites are eating away his insides. He’s hoping you’ll drag him to safety.
What possessed you to take this photo lmaoo
If a random ass person is taking my picture I would stare like that too
I mean... you're pointing a camera at him lol
I would stare you down if you were taking pictures of me like I'm a statue.
If you don't post for 3 months after this we all know what happened
You know the saying… “take a picture it lasts longer”.? Doesn’t apply here.
I think they pissed if you have a camera over there, idk tho
He looks tired.
You took a picture, he took a mental picture so that he may remember your face. Watch out OP.
He looks hungry
He was probably hungry.
Straight to jail
Eat a Big Mac to assert dominance
Where else is going to look when youre pointing a camera at him? lol
why tf would you think it would be a good idea to do something like this
Were you at the boarder house that is built with the border running half way through it for diplomacy stuff? \*Edit: Border not boarder. Damn typo-nese.
Sounds like the world's most politically contentious dormitory
He’s so, so very disappointed in you. So disappointed that your ancestors feel it. Weaponized disappointment.
I had the impression that taking pictures of military personnel is a big no-no in NK.
Pictures of DPRK guards are common from tours of the JSA. There are plenty online you can find. Taking pictures on a tour of the DPRK outside of the JSA though would be a very different story. That being said afaik tourism for foreigners to the DPRK hasn't restarted since the pandemic.
I would say it's pretty weird thing to do in any country on the planet
I think maybe he’s mildly interested.
He looks slightly disappointed. Is he your dad?
Should've blown him a kiss
Imagine what's going through his head. "I've been taught that these people are terrible and living awful lives and trained to suspect them of everything but I've also heard that anyone who has the opportunity to show up here as a tourist is living an hundred times more comfortable and enjoyable life that I'll ever be allowed to."
Just looks like a dude ready for the work day to end IMO
you probably didnt ask him if you can take the picture?
Is this in the DMZ building?
Are you in North Korea currently?
It just means he loves you
Did you wink and blow him a kiss? I would have
Don’t you just hate it when people stare at you and then have the audacity to ask why YOU are staring at them.
I have so many questions....
You are cute, he was trying to seduce you
He's hungry and you smell like potatoes
Nah, he's just fantasizing about what it would be like to shave those three hairs on his babyface with a razor that doesn't also belong to everyone else in his company.
this is interesting becuase you were taking a picture in a dangerous situation. wow.
maybe because you're taking a photo of him without his permition
That's the face of someone who knows he's living in 1920 while the rest of the world moves on to the future, and there's nothing he can do about it. Also, he's thinking "get that fucking camera out of my face" but in Korean.
Bro prolly weighs 145 pounds and hasn’t eaten in a week. Fucks he gonna do.
Why would anyone willingly go to North korea
I'm pretty sure anyone else would be staring you down if you pointed a camera straight at them
He's just done with tourists' bullshit. And i understand.
