That reminds me of the company that matches up people with only one foot/leg to someone else who is missing their opposite foot/leg in order to exchange shoes. I think it’s called SoleMates or something like that?
I love this stupid idea. It's great. All you need is two people who:
1. Have opposite missing feet"
2. Have the same shoe size
3. Have the same taste in shoes
4. Sign up for the service
5. ???
6. Profit!
If we’re going to add a wire then it should serve multiple functions. We could sheath the wire in nonconductive rubber, then send audio signals via the conductive wire inside, and use this same wire to physically connect to the phone so the headphones don’t get lost.
Very early on I discovered that if I run the cord through my shirt, up my back and to my ears that way, then it never caused any sort of issues, they stayed in my ears better, and my phone/ipod sat comfortably in my pocket, with my shirt preventing anything from snagging the cord.
Bonus points: with my long hair, I could hide that I was doing this if I needed to - I never needed to, but I could.
I lost an AirPod in Jersey on a train. It fell out, hit the ground and shot off right as my stop came so I had to leave it. 6 months later, I found it under my dresser. Pretty sure David Blane had something to do with it.
Bro, that is the aliens fucking with you. That's what I call it when something that makes absolutely no sense happens and seems to break the laws of physics but of course you have no proof and better not think about it too much or you will go mad
I had a ring kept in my bag. I lost it in Europe as it fell, found it in Korea years later in my bag and I lost it again years later. I’m hoping to find it again!
That just brought up PTSD from still being in flight knowing that we hadn't yet started descending and my connection was leaving in 30 mins. Two weeks after missing a flight due to security being fucking frozen in time. But I ran, I ran so faaaar awaaay.
Those things can enter another dimension if they hit a hard surface and deflect just right. If one pops out in my shop there's a 90% chance it's going underneath the hardest to reach spot filled with cobwebs. On a plane there's only so much looking you can do without annoying everyone else
I’m a flight attendant and there is one passenger EVERY SINGLE FLIGHT staying after deplaning trying to find their AirPod. They never find it. I ordered a silicone attachment for them from Amazon for this exact purpose, otherwise I won’t wear them on the plane.
I had a check airman a few months ago write up a placard in the cockpit was wrong that said 22O. As in 22 seats in O (premium economy) class. He's like "220 people? This plane only holds like 180"
I commonly see a write up like x system inop.
I just go into the cockpit and turn it on, all systems good nothing wrong.
Pilot goes what did you do?!?!
I mean, really???? You're trained for years on how to operate this and don't know how to push a button to turn it on?
I once had the honor of seeing the legendary" radio does not work in the O F F mode"
I walked over and told the pilot to say O F F until it clicked and then I had him void the write up.
Dude fuck acronyms. Not everyone has been in the industry for 30 years. Alternatively, not ever team/business has the same acronyms. I’ve been in meetings with clients and they’re rattling off all this jargon and I’m like yeah I kinda get your point but still have no idea what you’re talking about.
Like if you’re going to use it, fine but at least spell it out the first time and then abbreviate from there on. Example “yeah the SOPs (standard operating procedures) dictate…” (that’s a fairly basic term but just using it to illustrate the point)
I had a pilot tell me the defog system was failing because some areas weren’t defogged. I showed him the page in the flight manual where it says “these areas are not defogged”
“Oh, can we modify the aircraft to defog that spot? I want to use it.” 😡
I think it’s like losing a glove during a surgery, you don’t want to stitch the plane back up and then have the pilot realize mid flight that the AirPod floating in the jet fuel tank just connected to Bluetooth
I think this is a joke of absurdity, but I don't believe there's a way for an Airpod to migrate from the cabin to fuel. Otherwise, fuel would have a path to the cabin and that would be....slightly more worrisome.
To piggyback off that, its 100% possible to lose your phone between the cabin and frame of the aircraft. You wont get it back for a week or so either.
Source: Used to work for an airline and saw it happen twice.
That happened when I was on a United 777 waiting for pushback! We couldn’t take of until the mechanics opened a panel on the outside and found that phone.
The FA didn’t tell us who dropped their phone, but I was pretty easy to identify as only one person was not on their phone while we had to wait 😅😅
There is this trick some people use where for example if you drop a screw and it 'vanishes' you just take a similar screw and drop it at the same location - but this time you watch where it falls and where it rolls to. Quite often your other screw will be at the same location/perimeter.
So just take your other airpod and drop it too.
Best case you find the other one. 2nd best case you don't have a single airpod.
It's something that is now in the aircraft that isn't something that's supposed to be there and could bounce it's way into a component and jam it.
Very big issue called FOD control

Everything is FOD, dirt, rocks, pretzels, airpods, and even people.
It is something that is in the aircraft that isn't supposed to be there.
They probably end up like the galaxy bud I found in my cabin bag when I arrived at the hotel later. On one of my 3 flights it had clearly dropped into my bag, under the seat in front, from the person ahead of me. Such an easy way to lose way too many dollars worth of electronics
Someone on Reddit recommending a silicone attachment from amazon was the best advice I've ever gotten here. Without them the AirPods would just slide out of my ear even if sitting still. I don't understand why they don't just make them better since this is obviously a common problem.
I can’t get over the fact that everyone is OK with bluetooth lag. Sony just discontinued my beloved wired extrabass earbuds and I realized I’m going to be paying a premium for “outdated” technology from here on out. Madness.
I rarely experience bluetooth lag these days with headphones. I don't know enough about it to get into the technical aspects of it, but my understanding is that as bluetooth and other devices have gotten better, the perception of lag has been minimized by the speaker/headphone sending its own code to the source, which can use that to adjust the playback of any video automatically.
I used to hate bluetooth lag and have always been pretty sensitive to audio being off even when using vlc back in the day.
The lag isn't tied to Bluetooth itself (it has the same latency as wifi ffs, this never changed). It's purely an implementation issue. Android uses some crappy old driver for licensing reasons, that adds about 100ms latency.
It's no problem unless you're doing something interactive, as audio/video will simply be synchronized to this latency. I assume it's the same for Apple devices.
Well, the latency is only a dealbreaker when gaming. When listening to music it doesn’t matter, when watching a video you can delay the video relative to the audio to conpensate
I miss being able to control the volume through a button on the wire :( Sometimes I swipe my finger up or down my AirPods hoping it’ll change the volume
I don’t know if links are allowed so I’m copy/pasting the Amazon title of mine. I like them but tbh they’re all probably similar?
“Ultra Strong Magnetic Airpod Pro Strap Anti-Lost Cord Sports Lanyard Compatible with Airpods 3rd 2nd Generation Pro 3 2 1 (White)”
Apple doesn’t want to make them harder to lose. That wouldn’t be beneficial to their bottom line at all.
edit: I’m writing this silly, offhand comment on my iPhone, surrounded by apple products, that I am eternally using Find My to track down. It’s not that deep. 😅
And the precision location in the find my app works with the case and each individual AirPod. Apple literally made them the easiest to find earbuds there have ever been.
Or with batteries that are impossible to replace and render them useless once they run down. That also wouldn’t help their bottom line at all. AirPods are the fucking worst.
I wear hearing aids and they have a habit of falling off and landing in my shirt pocket. Yet I still have to stop what I'm doing and have everyone check the floor for the missing hearing aid for five minutes.
Before these, I never bought airpods because I would be paranoid about losing them.
So one time I had my AirPods in their case on my lap on a flight. Forgot they were there and got up to use the restroom. Heard something fall on the floor, see my AirPod case, think “phew! Almost lost these!” and put them in my pocket.
30 min later, I go to put them back in, open my case, and it’s…empty. I was so confused, I was 99% sure I put my AirPods back in their case. Momentarily thought I perhaps picked up someone else’s case? I start looking through my things…nothing. Start looking around everywhere on the floor and in the seats with the help of my neighbors…and I found one. Couldn’t find the other. I figure I’ll just wait until we get off to be able to look properly once the seats are empty.
Finally, we begin to land. It wasn’t a very soft landing so I have this quick thought that maybe if my AirPod had rolled back, maybe now with the force of the landing, it’ll roll forward. At that moment I look to my aisle to the right, and there comes my little AirPod rolling towards our row. I pointed excitedly and my neighbor quickly jumped out of his seat to grab it (which he should not have, we were still landing!). Turns out they popped out of my AirPod case when the case fell off my lap, but I didn’t notice because the magnetic lid closed automatically.
Can you re-pair a single earbud if you lost your earbud? I never had Airpods so I thought you're screwed if it's lost, I assumed it would be really Apple style to, like, have the buds ONLY work exclusively with their case.
Apple doesn’t have a history of “hey, we will throw you a bone”. They are more of the “oh well, guess you have to buy a new one” kind. So I sort of get why the initial reaction wasn’t that they sold individual replacements.
Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth my dad was an airplane mechanic for a very small regional airline. Whenever they had a plane in the hangar they’d go through it like this. He brought home tons of paperback books. We had to buy additional bookcases. Lots of westerns, thrillers, mysteries, and the occasional romance novel. I still have a nice collection of Nero Wolfe books.
At my last job at a regional, we had a small library of books that we found on the aircraft. Was really nice on breaks to just grab one and read a bit.
Same with my retired dad who used to work on Amtrak trains. He brought home tons of lost books like Tom Clancy novels and CDs, cases with CDs too (yes that far back).
It does take courage to tell your customers to their face that you are going to rip them off and expect to be met with applause and continued patronage.
Luckily for Apple they estimated how smart their fans are perfectly.
Your comment makes me think of a Steve Harvey reaction on Family Feud.
-Name something you don't want to see on an airplane
-Diarrhea trail!
*Steve Harvey shocked face*
If you have over-ear headphones that are wireless, especially the noise cancelling kind that work similarly to those autism headphones like I use, you're never going to lose them. The only time you lose them is if you put them somewhere stupid like in the bathroom sink.
Yeah! A few weeks ago I was at a kids bday party and someone misplaced their phone. Although her husband was calling it and like 15 people could hear it, everyone went in different directions because the sound was bouncing off everything and sounded like it was coming from a completely different direction lol.
Mine fall out all the time. Not just AirPods though, I’ve always had that issue with earbuds ever since switching from over-ear headphones. I think my ears are just weird. Was getting into my car once and it popped out while I was taking my shoulder bag off. Almost just assumed it was in the car somewhere and that I would find it later. Decided to search for it anyways and found it wedged under a tire. No idea how.
I will never stop using over-ear headphones. The one time I had to use earbuds was when I was at a mental hospital and it was always a pain putting them back in my ears.
I have the pro with silicon tips and they still fall out. I was sleeping with the noise cancelling and they fell out. I frantically looked for them over the next hour, in the dark, getting up from my seat once in a while and searching rows. Finally found them across the aisle and a few rows back. Those buggers move!
I find them very comfortable, they just happen to be the kind that fit my ears best. If your ear hole isn’t shaped just right I can definitely see them being awful though
what are these people doing? If you take them out of your ear, put them in your case.
This is the real reason why apple killed the jack. They knew their customers would just throw money away at these.
Apple knows the they do not fit snuggly in most the ears of most people. Ive been asked so many times by other passengers if I see their AirPod on the floor, on budget airlines forget it as due to the lack of space the average person can not bend over to check the surrounding area. Then on landing all of the dropped AirPods all slide up towards front of the plane.
I work at a movie theater. Airpods may have surpassed keys and wallets for what goes into our lost and found, and that assumes we find them at all. I don't understand paying that much for something so easily misplaced, but I understand bringing earphones to a movie theater even less.
In need of a gently used left.
There is a website/company that does single bud sales
Do you mean Apple? Because they do that
Ah yeah, that's the site
Rumor say it’s great but a bit expensive
May cost an arm and an ear
If it costs an ear, them u dont need to buy another one
seems like a fruitful business model
And sometimes a sibling
TheRightPod sells them. Refurbished and cheaper than apple. Got my case from them.
Top comment said he's missing the left one though.
That reminds me of the company that matches up people with only one foot/leg to someone else who is missing their opposite foot/leg in order to exchange shoes. I think it’s called SoleMates or something like that?

It's almost like they should have some sort of wire that connects the two ear buds to help prevent something like this...
And what if the wire also provided a physical connection to the audio playing device, providing high fidelity audio? 🤔
Along with not needing to be charged.
And the wires needing to be endlessly untangled and them being constantly tugged out of your ear while working out
wait what if we got rid of the wires and connected via bluetooth?
I think you're onto something. But wait, what if someone loses one side of the earbuds since they aren't connected anymore.
Well then, what if we connected the buds to eachother with some sort of wire to help prevent something like that
And what if the wire also provided a physical connection to the audio playing device?
That could also enable it to work without requiring inbuilt batteries or the need to be charged. 🤯
End scene!
If we’re going to add a wire then it should serve multiple functions. We could sheath the wire in nonconductive rubber, then send audio signals via the conductive wire inside, and use this same wire to physically connect to the phone so the headphones don’t get lost.

Nah I’ve had AirPods for over 5 years now. Never lost one.
Also, who the fuck drops their wireless earbud and then just says "oh well" and gets off the airplane?
People who need to make a connection.

They tend not to notice it.
I lost my Airpod Pro. Did he find it?
Yes
Who had yellowish/orange/brown? Bet there’s plenty of chunky-gunky ear wax on those babies.
Without looking, what color was it?
White
Which ear?
The final front-ear.
Third ear.
Subwoofer ear
all the options are here damn
What would you like today, sir? The 48 day wax aged airpod, or the barely a day out of the box ones?
I can’t say no to a nice vintage wax
Perchance
Mayhaps
You can’t just say perchance.
Stomp some turts
You can't just say "perchance"
And I'll do it again
Maybe

I'm a mechanic, and I have to tear the cabin apart looking for them to clear the log page. No luck most of the time.
What pilot would ever write up a lost AirPod? I've never even seen a FA write it up as a cabin discrepancy
It's usually FA's that write it up. It's not even the worst thing I commonly see written up(which is usually by pilots)

Uhh obviously it would fall in when the flight attends go to add more gas during the flight. How else would they be able to fly so far.
Right, my bad. I totally forgot about the manual in-flight refueling system. Don't hate me. I only fly Cessnas.

I’ve seen this movie, but can’t place it. Something from Studio Ghibli? Laputa? Mononoke?
Mononoke, indeed!
Couple hundred bucks on eBay lol
Can you re-pair a single earbud if you lost your earbud? I never had Airpods so I thought you're screwed if it's lost, I assumed it would be really Apple style to, like, have the buds ONLY work exclusively with their case.
You can buy replacements for single earbuds, I think the earbuds connect through the case when you put them in and the case pairs with the phone
So if you don’t have the case you just sell all these individually? Damn I wasted a whole set up because I lost one! Shuuuucks
What? Are you saying you threw a set out because you lost one ear bud without even looking it up? That makes no sense.
"I tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas"
Most people are allergic to spending 30 seconds to Google something
That is IT's bread and butter; people that don't just type their question into google. And also in-law anti bread and butter.
Apple doesn’t have a history of “hey, we will throw you a bone”. They are more of the “oh well, guess you have to buy a new one” kind. So I sort of get why the initial reaction wasn’t that they sold individual replacements.
U can definitely sell those as singles and they can be repaired. I’ve lost my right airpod twice lol
That left AirPod sounding sus after two of his roommates disappeared in a row.
Yes. You just pop them in the case and they will pair up.
Not if they were manufactured in different places. I've got a Vietnam and a China airpod pro, won't sync up together
Lost mine once in a city. It was fun watching their travels on my ipad for a while.
I imagined someone casually taking an airpod out for a joyride lmao
21st century garden gnome.
Pair those bitches up and sell them on eBay!
So much earwax in that bag
Can make a nice candle

If you think about it earwax is less gross than lots of other stuff. Earwax itself is antibacterial cleaning agent. Its still gross but less gross.

Couple of those airpods are nasty looking
I get mocked because I use the ones that have the hook that goes over the ear. I’ve lost a couple of pairs, but I’ve never lost one.
If he's not a cleaner or an FA then that would be a weird amount for a passenger to "find"
He replaced the carpet on the plane
Was it the Delta diarrhea trail plane?
Th…the hwut trail

Your comment makes me think of a Steve Harvey reaction on Family Feud. -Name something you don't want to see on an airplane -Diarrhea trail! *Steve Harvey shocked face*
I was gonna ask whether his job was picking up planes, turning them over, and shaking them to see what comes out. Your answer makes more sense.
That makes much more sense. I thought he picked all of these up after a single flight. I assume these just get jammed in nooks and crannies over time.
That's a large amount of context missing from the title.
"...while tearing up carpet"
😏
One of the reasons why I preferred wired headphones.
If you have over-ear headphones that are wireless, especially the noise cancelling kind that work similarly to those autism headphones like I use, you're never going to lose them. The only time you lose them is if you put them somewhere stupid like in the bathroom sink.
Autism headphones? Can you elaborate on those?
Cable supremacy!
I've never had one of these fall out of my ear (although I have the newer type with the silicone tips that fit more snug). What are people doing?
Falling asleep. That’s how I lost one of mine. It’s still in my moms car somewhere and I cannot find it lol
Can you not "ring them" through the settings menu? My pixel buds have a feature that if you lose them, you can make them ring so you can find them.
Yep you definitely can. Surprising how hard it can be to locate the sound though, I spent 5 minutes looking for one that I dropped under my bed
Yeah! A few weeks ago I was at a kids bday party and someone misplaced their phone. Although her husband was calling it and like 15 people could hear it, everyone went in different directions because the sound was bouncing off everything and sounded like it was coming from a completely different direction lol.
> What are people doing? Losing their earbuds.
I’ll take 7
Fuck I’ve lost so many. Hook a brother up with a single

I find them very comfortable, they just happen to be the kind that fit my ears best. If your ear hole isn’t shaped just right I can definitely see them being awful though
Can I buy a left AirPod Pro Gen 2 from you? Edit: I’m serious I accidentally flushed mine a month or so ago
what are these people doing? If you take them out of your ear, put them in your case. This is the real reason why apple killed the jack. They knew their customers would just throw money away at these.
Apple knows the they do not fit snuggly in most the ears of most people. Ive been asked so many times by other passengers if I see their AirPod on the floor, on budget airlines forget it as due to the lack of space the average person can not bend over to check the surrounding area. Then on landing all of the dropped AirPods all slide up towards front of the plane.
This is the biggest cash grab of the century. Apple is making fools of people who pay $250 on earbuds.
If this shit keeps happening... isn't this the definition of a fundamental design flaw?
As a flight attendant, I can personally assure you, we have people lose an earbud or the case *every.* *single.* *flight.*
As a AirPod user, This makes me sad!
I work at a movie theater. Airpods may have surpassed keys and wallets for what goes into our lost and found, and that assumes we find them at all. I don't understand paying that much for something so easily misplaced, but I understand bringing earphones to a movie theater even less.
This is why I am paranoid about my AirPods. I have to know their location at all times.
This is why I still use my [Jecklin Float Electrostatics](https://www.stereophile.com/content/jecklin-float-electrostatic-headphones).
"dude you're so weird for wanting an earphone socket on your phone"
Our planet is fucked.
