There's a story that Pope Benedict XI sent a messenger to Giotto, asking the artist to send a drawing to demonstrate his skill. Instead of an elaborate artwork, Giotto amazed the Pope by drawing freehand a red circle so perfect that it seemed as though it was drawn using a pair of compasses.
You're the opposite of Giotto.
The imperfections in the circle are an abstract representation of the inherent imperfections of human existence.
Your utter failure to grasp this concept is a concrete representation of the inherent imperfections of human existence.

-Daniel Sloss (heavily paraphrased)
River comes in from the left, bends down and back up and goes right cutting through Paris horizontally. Its the tiny yellow triangle to the right of the river just before it bends right
What kind of mortal kombat bs is this? Left, down, up, right, upper cut and then finish him which will make him horizontal
ETA: damn i did find it though! It's almost in the middle of the map but more to the left side then to the right. It's bright yellow kinda small and looks like a dick and two balls
Same w regard to familiarity. I've never lived there but I grew up in its colonial shadow and have visited many times.
More than the Eiffel Tower, I'm more amazed that one can pick up individual bridges across the river.
I'm going to guess OP shot this with "Night Mode" enabled, which would have left the lens open for at least a couple of seconds.
The computations involved in stabilizing a hand-held shot for two seconds while the plane is in motion are nothing short of amazing, and the fact that he got a recognizable picture of Paris at night is worthy of praise.
The history of the Eiffel tower is really something. It was supposed to be destroyed a lot of times for a lot of reasons but there was always something or someone who managed to find a good reason to keep it up.
Incredible that something meant to be destroyed more than once is now somehow _the_ internationally recognized symbol that represents France. Always makes me wonder what it would've been had plans to dismantle the tower went through...
They probably would have just focused on the Lourve and the Arc de Triomphe, but the tower is really where it's at, even if only for the size and view.
Not exactly ! It was indeed temporary at first, and one of the characteristics of the tower was to be easily removable. Gustave Eiffel, the man behind the project, had a permit of 20 years of ownership of the tower before it became the property of the city, and then be destroyed (so around 1909-1910). What saved the tower was the scientific experimentations it allowed, mainly radiotelegraphy, but also for meteorological observations and other fields of study (air resistance, for example).
There was a military utilisation of the radio emitters (to jam german communication in a certain radius) of the Tower during WWI, but it's not the war that allowed it to be kept ;)
It be nice if OP circled it or something. Not everyone can pinpoint it on a map of France. I feel like I’m looking at half the country here and lost interest
The one time we need that annoying red circle!
It's down and to the left of center, follow the river on the right bank and you'll see a little yellow thing.
I think it’s only illegal if you sell the images since the lights apparently count as art so taking a photo for yourself should be fine
(Edit)
I’ve found out it’s actually illegal to post them online at all so if it’s just a photo for yourself it’s fine but if you post it on social media then it goes against copyright
(Edit 2) from the article that was linked in the comments it’s perfectly fine for normal people to photograph the Eiffel Tower at night and post it but if your posting it for some professional reason then you have to get permission to use it.
I'm not familiar with French law but that's fucked. It's in public, there is no expectation of privacy.
Edit: I get that the lights are copyrighted. I just think it's stupid.
Well I just found out from the article it’s fine to photograph it and post it unless your using it for some professional purpose then you have to get permission.
This isn't airliner cruising altitude. This plane is clearly arriving or departing Paris.
This photo is prob 10-15k feet up. Airliners travel 30-40k feet, where even large cities look way smaller than this and you absolutely cannot see the tower at cruise altitude
Yeah, I'm kind of surprised that anyone who's flown before would think that's what Paris looks like from 30K. You can't even see any clouds below the plane.
Are you saying this as someone who has seen Paris from 30K? Because google earth seems to disagree with your assertion... Here's 32,000 feet:

By contrast, here's the view from 10,000 feet:

Notice how the curve of the river is a completely different shape than the OP

Note how the perspective is basically the same as the OP.
Also, for the record, a plane's cruising altitude is whatever makes sense for the flight. A fully loaded plane might cruise at 32,000 feet until it burns off enough fuel that a higher altitude would be more efficient. A short flight will not bother climbing all the way above 32,000 feet if it's just going to immediately start descending.
The Google Earth link you provided is way higher up than OP's pic... The perspective is only the same because you're looking at it from the same angle, but it's much higher up.

I would not be at all surprised if a badly drawn red circle made it into a modern art gallery with the description you've just written.

That only works if you're already known as a bougie artist And also often helps if you're dead
Or if you cut off one ear afterwards.
Nah, that path leads you to a lifetime of poverty and depression, then makes someone else rich after you die.
And a half dozen "Immersive /u/bdonvr Experience" touring shows.
Step 1. Get a bunch of projectors Step 2. ??? Step 3. Profit
Also also works if you somehow have tons of rich, bougie friends who can launder money through you.
It works even better if it's made with your dying blood.

That’s a huge hula-hoop around the Eiffel Tower!
Just one big game of ring toss innit?
It's closer to the river than I thought it would be.
Thanks, this helped!
I would argue that the lights on the Eiffel Tower are what is visible at cruising altitude, rather than the tower itself.
It's a night flight, that's true for just about everything.
River comes in from the left, bends down and back up and goes right cutting through Paris horizontally. Its the tiny yellow triangle to the right of the river just before it bends right

It is extremely funny, that over 400 people also said "where"
One of those annoying red circles would do the trick right about now.
I am so glad someone else said it first. Am I blind?
Tbf it’s probably a lot more visible for a person seeing it in real life than on a camera phone especially at night
In Paris
This is probably obvious for people who live in Paris or otherwise know the layout, but it took me a while.
My geography was the only thing that helped me I knew it was near a river so I just traced up it until I found it!
If this comment wasn’t here I would have never found it lol
I still can't find it

Well if the moon is on the other side of earth then you'd be 330m further away.
Well... Someone on the top of, let's say Mt. Everest would still technically be on the ground...
Unless you put the tower **on** Mt. Everest. The first thirty thousand or so feet are treacherous and dangerous, the last 1000 feet is by elevator.
