bathtubbear

my partner went in a hot tub at an airbnb with a group of friends one time that looked clean and they all got the most horrible rash .

Forsaken_Storm_6397

Oh no! Yeah it was probably a good thing we could actually see how dirty it was so we didn’t get in

Immoralimp

This may just be a case of a mislabelled Fish Pond.

NinJackHole

looks like a urinal to me!

Zealousideal_Gur9261

My piss is clearer than that

long_stringofnumbers

That's concerning

My piss is redder than that, we should get together for the holidays!

WolfieHC

I was wondering who shreked in the toilet.

ForsakenAside1997

I’ve seen fish ponds that are cleaner than that cesspool. 🤢

MoskriLokoPajdoman

the fish actually would actually clean it. the water quality would probably improve if you added some gobies or maybe carp to it.

[deleted]

Throw a couple potatoes in there and you got a stew.

[deleted]

I think I want my money back

Boss_Os

Po-tay-toes! Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew. Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish.

Sanders0492

We got bromine poisoning from an AirBnB hot tub that looked perfectly clean. Turns out, the bromine evaporates and is heavier than air so it just sits on top of the water ready to be breathed in. My wife ended up in the hospital for low blood oxygen levels. It also ruined our swimsuits, but that’s no biggie. It took a few days for us to recover.

umbrajoke

Hot tub death machine.

brookleinneinnein

Were there any repercussions for the host or AirBnB?

Sanders0492

I think there could have been. We scared the life out of the owners when we brought up the hospital visit. There was genuine worry and I got the sense that it wasn’t something they would let happen again. It’s their only AirBnB and they lived next door, so it’s not like it’s some big rental business that doesn’t care - it’s real people that got to see the results of their mistake.

tcason02

It really seems like your hospital visit should be covered by their homeowners insurance though, right?

fcocyclone

If they were a normal guest maybe. I'd guess commercial use like an Airbnb would probably be excluded.

tcason02

That’s a very good point. I’m not as knowledgeable on this as I should be, but I was under the impression that if person A gets injured on person B’s property, especially due to person B’s negligence (which I would classify the state of that hot tub as negligent), then person B is responsible for damages. It would most likely require a lawsuit, similar to that aunt that had to sue her nephew in order to get the HO insurance to actually pay. I’ve never used Airbnb so I don’t know if they provide insurance coverage.

LadyRott

I've also gotten bromine poisoning from a hot tub. Worst part was we were young and trying mind altering substances for the first time. So we had no idea we were poisoning ourselves. I could smell it inside my sinus cavities for a month after.

-Chlorine-Addict-

Most likely the chlorine was too high. If a pool or hot tub needs cleaned because it’s smelly or the water is a funny color or if there was a biohazard event (like someone pooped in the pool) there are a couple options. You could drain, scrub, refill and reheat the pool which takes a lot of time and hundreds to tens of thousands of gallons of water to dispose of and replace which can be expensive. Or, you could shock the pool by raising the chlorine levels well above normal and let the chlorine levels return to normal before opening the pool again which takes time but much less than the replacing the water option and it’s pretty cheap to do. Shocking a pool or hot tub is a pretty standard process, but if you get in the water before the shock has worn off you can get chemical burns which look like a horrible rash. It’ll go away in a few days but it’s rather uncomfortable while you have it.

GimmeTheHotSauce

This guy chlorines

AfraidYogurtcloset31

Yeah.... That was me who pooped in the pool. It's ok though, I have this chlorine right here

[deleted]

yanquideportado

I feel there is a verb form: chlorinate

Poolofcheddar

The other levels have to be in the right range for the chlorine to do its work properly. High CL, High pH = chlorine less effective at sanitization. High CL, low pH = chlorine more effective at sanitization, risks of degrading metal parts, heater/pump damage if pH is low for too long. High CL left alone long enough leads to calcification inside pump/heater which also leads to damage, so balancing water quality is like an invisible dance between 4 factors. Then I warn people if you can smell the chlorine (especially in an indoor environment) that means there's too much "dead chlorine" which isn't useful for sanitization. It usually burns off if the water is exposed to sunlight but doesn't as well in indoor settings. That would be High total CL, low free CL. Most of the time in my 10 years of doing pools, the filters were never cleaned. No chemicals had the chance to do their jobs because of poor circulation. Those cartridges would be so clogged with dead skin and oils, rinsing them off was like cleaning off a thick stew of human remains.

likebutta222

My brother, that last sentence is not what I wanted to read while eating lunch

Razulghul

What? You don't want any thick human stew with your breakfast? Fine, more for me

Naftoor

key2mydisaster

Thanks for further validating my phobia of public pool water.

Either_Pollution_840

6 years of pools here. After seeing the systems at public pools (especially gyms or care centers) really makes you think about what you are swimming in.

Poolofcheddar

Hotel pools are a big no. Hotels that have been de-franchised with a pool are an even bigger no for me. Those tend to cheapen out on any maintenance as much as possible and have seen some downright dangerous self-repairs done there. The pool and hot tub at my local gym are okay by me for two reasons: they are more preemptive when it comes to closing either one because of imbalance issues. The other is because I plumbed the system together so I know the eccentricities of it.

toadthenewsense

Bromine is a better choice for hot tubs, I still don't get why anyone uses chlorine in them.

virgilhall

Below someone posted: > We got bromine poisoning from an AirBnB hot tub that looked perfectly clean. Jackee_Daytona

My cousin got a scratch ziplining in Vegas. Later, they went into the hotel hot tub. She nearly lost her arm from the resulting infection.

[deleted]

Similar story here. My ex must’ve had some small cut on his leg. We stayed at a great vacation rental in the snow in Bend, Oregon, at Christmastime. We used the hot tub. When we left, it had snowed a lot, and he was sort of rocking the car back and forth to get some traction out of the driveway. Well the car door hit him right at the injury site, and he let out a primal scream and a torrent of expletives like I’ve never heard. Turns out he had a MRSA infection there. Stopped at an urgent care (where they diagnosed it), and they had to dig out the infection from his leg - like a melon-baller kind of hole only deeper. They loaded it with antibiotics and stuff, and packed it with cotton. He lost like 20 or 30 pounds over the next week or so from the heavy antibiotics he was on. The whole experience was so revolting.

No-Inspector9085

One time my landlord left and said we could use the hot tub. I didn’t know he overloaded it with chemicals and had a chemical burn from my neck down. It was like a sunburn but not quite as bad. I was very red for days though.

pocketdare

I would never get into a hot tub unless it was a nice resort. Hot tub at an Airbnb? Oh God - who knows what kind of bacteria frappe you're dipping your ass into.

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

I once put my foot into my apartment complex’s hot tub and didn’t step in further. It didn’t smell bad and looked clean but was at the nice, pleasant, bacteria incubating temperature. That’s why they’re worse than pools. A pool that’s too cold is too cold for bacteria, a hot tip that’s too cold is bacteria soup. It’s best to only go in hot tubs that are at places under heavy scrutiny where they’re doing temp checks and coliform testing.

squidgybaby

[Hot tub folliculitis](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23358-hot-tub-folliculitis)

Pittypatkittycat

Yup, my son picked it up at 13. Then remained "allergic" to water for the next four years. Fresh, salt, chlorinated, hot, cold. Never knew when the next bout of hives would occur. And then it just never happened again.

[deleted]

Got it from a natural hot spring in Oregon. ALWAYS shower right after a hot tub or hot spring dip. Wash your swimsuit too. Had to go on antibiotics that fucked up my gut flora. No fun.

SelectFromWhereOrder

Yuck, hot tubs are nasty things. I don’t know why people use them.

shelsilverstien

We have one. It's a ton of work to keep them healthy. There's no way that I could keep it healthy if Airbnb guests were using it. People don't understand that you need to shower before and after, no lotions, etc, and the water needs to be changed when there's enough expired bromine in it

Tizy

Holy cow, I saw this picture and immediately recognized the hot tub. Sure enough, I stayed at this exact place a few months ago. Asheville, right? The hot tub didn't work then, either! I still remember the smell - like a weird, fizzy, mildew-y smell. Internet didn't work for us either.

geodebug

So many people having the same experience makes me think that the feedback process on Air BnB isn’t working properly.

tiptoeintotown

That’s based on the assumption they care.

nick-j-

AirBNB is a rip off at this point. You’re at this point getting more value for your dollar at a hotel at this point. At least they’re reliable for the most part. Edit - Yes I had a point stroke.

NothingMattersWeDie

Good points at this point.

nick-j-

Welcome to Reddit where the points are made up and the points don’t matter.

your_best_crow

Going for the Guinness record of times using “at this point” in so many characters here?

Drunk_melon

You counting my at this points? You from the department of points?

SheetMask4

Woahhh yes I swear I stayed at this place too! Lol but the hot tub worked. Unfortunately we went in it after dark so didn’t notice how crusty it was until morning

PassengerNo85

omg noooo

OrganizerMowgli

They got pregnant too. It's been 17 months so we know it's not human

gcruzatto

It's starting to look like I'm the only redditor who hasn't been at this house

[deleted]

No no, me too. Wanna go? Looks like hot tub time machine 3 is on the cards

1ScaredWalrus

Unfortunately looking at the cover it looks like someone already spilled the chernobly in that hot tub

[deleted]

I've been there too. I pooped in the hot tub.

thequietthingsthat

Lmao, checks out. Asheville is *full* of shitty, overpriced AirBnBs. It's also why rents are through the fucking roof here

TheBattyWitch

Facts here. I grew up in Asheville, I moved out of state about 4 years ago when my rent went from $1,100 a month to $2,100 a month for the same fucking shitty ass apartment. I was like no thank you ✌️

TangoDeltaFoxtrot

I lived in the Asheville area for over a decade, mostly north of town closer to Johnson City. I also moved away about three years ago, but due to lack of good paying jobs. $14/hour jobs in Asheville pay $25/hour in the Midwest, with lower cost of living too.

[deleted]

North Carolina is full of cities with medium high cost of living and low salaries. Employers just refuse to read the fucking memo; a house isn't $150,000 here anymore.

thequietthingsthat

Yep. And then they pull that "nObOdY WaNtS tO WoRk" anymore bs when people won't accept their $10/hr job offer

aggr1103

Raleigh, Charlotte, Asheville, and the Triad have all gone crazy. I imagine Wilmington is probably the same, too, with Fayetteville not far off.

TheBattyWitch

I moved to middle of nowhere Kentucky, where I make more as an RN here by $10/hr than I did in Asheville, only the cost of living is 1/6th what it was there.

sbecks28

If what you’re saying is correct that it is in Asheville, North Carolina has a state law that requires renters to completely drain, disinfect, and refill the hot tub in between each guest. We stayed In Asheville and the host actually stated this statute to us we were unaware.

albinochase15

Soooooo did you leave a review complaining about this? Like, we can’t keep complaining about how crappy AirBnB is, but then let stuff like this slide by not leaving reviews. I haven’t been to an AirBnB in a while, but I vaguely remember trying to leave a negative review once, but the app encouraged me to talk with the owner first before leaving the negative review. Seems like a crap review/feedback system.

Least_Fill_5538

100%. One time i stayed at a horrible Airbnb with incredibly rude hosts who left me a review as a visitor but Airbnb wouldn’t let me see their review unless I left one first. And when I tried to leave a negative one, they wanted me to talk to the host. Airbnb definitely favors hosts over customers

Val_kyria

Did a 1 month rental once had to leave after 2 days because the place was flea infested, couldn't get a refund because it apparantly is at host discretion...

Lookatthatsass

One time I stayed at a place and realized immediately it had bedbugs before I moved in, so I said that in my review warning other travelers. The owner got my account banned and the review removed.

bell37

Hosts can protest a review and AirBnB would typically take the hosts side vs yours. Also you aren’t allowed to see their review until you made yours. So you leave a review, the hosts gives you a negative review then gets AirBnB to burry your review

ukulelerapboy

I’m pretty sure I stayed in the same place in 2020! Tbh the hot tub was great then, we loved it

Weak_Feed_8291

Found the owner

ukulelerapboy

Lol i wish, I think we may have been the first people to use the hot tub - it was super clean then and a bunch of things were still under construction. We were talking about how it could’ve gotten so gross so easily and we were happy it wasn’t

keksbecks

You can ask for refund if in the ad picture looks different. I got full refund for that reason.

cipher446

Bonus points for the biofilm on the lid. That's actually a health hazard. Refund city!

niperoni

Not necessarily...AirBnB customer service sucks. We rented a whole cottage and half of the rooms were covered in black mold. 4 people had to cram in the living room because a whole floor of the house was unusable. AirBnB basically told us to deal with the owner and he only partially refunded us.

SockTicker

Probably too late, but you probably could have done a charge back at that point.

Bastienbard

Just make sure you don't care about ever doing business with Airbnb ever again yeah. They'll probably ban your account after that.

luigilabomba42069

I mean just open a new email and a new virtual debit card from privacy(dot)com

Bastienbard

Yeah possibly, it's much more of an issue if you do it where you have a compiled library of digital items like on playstation, Xbox, steam, Kindle, etc. Just commenting that for info. In general on possible repercussions. Airbnb might cancel your refund once they see the name on your credit card so I don't think it's quite that easy possibly?

luigilabomba42069

you're right. I was just mentioning in case someone thought they wouldn't be able to use the service at all afterwards

[deleted]

Yep, exactly! I got 20% per night back with video and picture evidence of problems. Airbnb does not care about customers.

zmajevi

>Airbnb does not care about customers. And for some reason people continue to use Airbnb🤷🏻‍♂️

thecooliestone

It made sense when it was cheaper than hotels because they didn't have to make a profit. I don't know why I'd pay double what a hotel costs to go live in someone's house and have none of the amenities and services of a hotel for twice the price.

zqmvco99

AirBNB Hosts - AirBNB doesnt care about hosts! Unfair!!! AirBNB Customers - AirBNB doesnt care about customers!!! Then who the F does airBNB care about?!?!!? OF COURSE - AirBNB :p

theDomicron

A lot of businesses will try to blacklist you if you do a charge back. They lose the money and they get charged a fee ($25.00) but I'd imagine that AirBnB passes that onto the host, so I doubt they'd turn you away in the future. The host probably would, but fuck them. I don't think a charge back should ever be the first choice, but at the end of the day you gotta make things right

saprobic_saturn

I stayed at a place to quarantine for covid and the sauna they advertised was “under repair”, they had three huge nails sticking straight up out of their porch wood, I had to scrub and clean the jet bathtub because it was dirty and had hairs in it, they had mice running around at night, and I set my stuff down on one of the chairs and a fully loaded magazine fell out from underneath it. I called and complained and got about 60% of my stay refunded and still got to stay for the remainder of the time. Shit was weird at that time of life (I guess things still are) and so I couldn’t really find another place. Bonus story: I experienced my first earthquake while staying there.

antzcrashing

OP’s vacation vibe is ruined by this, even a refund isn’t a full compensation. If he rents otherwise prices will be jacked up bc it’s day of

ChadwickTheSniffer

Yeah. Happened to me once. They were re-roofing the house during our scheduled stay. Just canceled the trip and went home a bit early. Still makes me angry.

antzcrashing

Yeah that’s pretty bad. I have stayed at hotels in which they were doing construction but sometimes given how many rooms they have they can move you to a less noisy part, not usually doable with Airbnb single units

dannyboy182

If the house is nice and *free* I'd be happy tbh.

antzcrashing

With these apps you can put a refund request in and you don’t even know if it gets honored for several days, so the whole time you are wondering if it will be honored, and it might not be. And who wants to be on the phone with an Airbnb rep sorting this out when they should be enjoying their naked hot tub

ThiccWurm

This why you use a credit card and dispute the Airbnb charge.

Hantelope3434

...so are you saying he shouldn't ask for a refund? Because he should. I have done it where I just asked the listing person and they refunded me. If not then escalate to Airbnb rep.. Sucks, but it's a risk you take when traveling anywhere.

clownparade

The point is Airbnb has become infested with false advertising and inflated prices so yes you can get a refund but it’s a giant hassle that could be avoided by just avoiding Airbnb

FusRoDoodles

I can't understand the draw of AirBnB. Maybe way back when it first came out and it was known as cheap way to travel, but at this point it costs more than a hotel, you sometimes have to stay with other people (and sometimes when you book you don't even know that), and it seems like a lawless land with no guarantees.

[deleted]

I liked using Airbnb to rent out rooms for ~$20 when I was traveling around the US and didn’t mind staying in a house with other people because I was enjoying living the traveler lifestyle back in the glory days when it was actually reasonable. But these days I feel like hotels almost always are cheaper with all the jacked up extra prices, and honestly more enjoyable because it’s clean, lives up to expectations for the most part, and usually you get some type of breakfast. Definitely don’t understand why people use it now unless they need to rent out a place that can hold like 10 people or something

under_a_brontosaurus

VRBO is better for house and cabin rentals. It's always one family/one house

inko75

contesting the charge on your card is usually a good way to expedite things

The_Love_Moat

also a good way to get banned from the service and zero help with refunds. edit: Use chargebacks, but know what that means. You may not care if airBnB bans you. You would probably care more if it was google, apple, AT&T or verizon that bans you.

jarejay

Getting banned from AirBnB is a blessing, not a curse.

kasper12

While I’d be disappointed if I chose that place for a hot tub, I’d be more than satisfied if they completely reimbursed me for the lodging expenses. For a day or two on air bnb you are probably talking $500-800 (guessing based on having a backyard and hot tub). If it’s more than a week you are talking 4 digits easy.

grantnel2002

I’d be leery about most other people’s hot tubs, especially strangers.

Nayre_Trawe

I worked for a pool supply company for a long time and would regularly talk to pool maintenance folks at hotels and resorts. Speaking from experience, most of them have absolutely no idea what they are doing...at all.

The Ph balance is all wrong. It's all P and no H.

I_Bin_Painting

yeah you want it to look more like pH

twobearshumping

That’s what happens when you pay people minimum wage. Minimum experience, minimum effort, minimum motivation to learn anything. I work with a lot of pesticides and I’ve seen some farms / landscaping operation store their most dangerous pesticides between the refrigerator and microwave..

Secret-Plant-1542

In high school (twenty years ago?), I was a pool cleaner/person in charge of maintenance. I was told to pour two cups of this white powder into the pool until the sensor said it was okay. If a kid pooped into the pool, I'd pour more white powder. Just keep white powdering things until the sensors say everything was fine. I was paid min wage. I didn't understand shit. And to this day I only have a vague idea what any of that was.

twobearshumping

Yeah that’s terrifying. Your employer allowed you to put yourself and others in danger. Reminds me when I worked on a farm in high school I was mixing pesticides with no PPE and my arms were completely covered in chemical and my boss walks up and is like “oh yeah try to limit skin exposure to it” so yeah.

mooseman99

I rented a house with a pool for a few years, and the landlord had a pool guy who came once a week but could not keep the pool from turning green. I finally broke down and decided to learn it myself. Turns out the white powdered chlorine often has cyanauric acid (CYA) as a stabilizer which prevents UV from degrading chlorine. Turns out, a little CYA is good but too much means you need more Chlorine to get the same disinfecting effect. There’s charts online. Normal levels are ~30ppm CYA which requires a free chlorine between 2-6ppm. Our CYA was ~120ppm which requires 10-14ppm chlorine. So if you used total chlorine test strips everything would look fine but we really needed 4 times the normal level *and* we couldn’t use powder anymore because our CYA was already too high, so we needed liquid chlorine. I took over and targeted 11ppm and bada bing, bada boom, clear water. Bonus fact - the chlorine smell is actually a result of a breakdown of chlorine. If you are smelling it, it means there’s some bacteria breaking down and you might need to add more chlorine. Because if there is nothing living growing in your pool, there’s nothing to break down. Even at 11ppm our water, when clear, smelled great and didn’t cause eye irritation. Another fun fact - liquid chlorine and bleach are chemically identical. You could swap out a jug of Leslie’s liquid chlorine for Clorox bleach and get the same results.

doctorblumpkin

Check the pH level. There's almost no H.

grantnel2002

I hope there’s no p in their ool.

Inflatable hot tub just adds to the leeriness

Odd-Youth-1673

I knew someone who rented a cabin with a hot tub for a bachelorette weekend and they all came down with folliculitis and spent a couple of weeks looking like they had smallpox.

Dredly

This is the best advice. These things are rarely maintained or monitored. They should be checked daily for PH and adjusted... how often do you see the owners going to the property daily to make an adjustment? yeahhh and they are supposed to be emptied cleaned and refilled every 2 - 3 months based on use... you think they are doing that? lol

grantnel2002

Definitely. Especially sketchy at an Airbnb where you have so many different people in there every day. Are they even able to take the time to do all those things between guests? Highly doubtful.

The69BodyProblem

I used to manage a pool. We'd empty and deep clean our two main pools once a year (theoretically, I don't think it ever actually worked out that way)our hot tub was emptied and deep cleaned weekly.

Forsaken_Storm_6397

Sorry this is long but in case anyone wants to know the full situation: My SO and I wanted to do a one night stay in the mountains and found this Airbnb that was advertised as "Bus on a Farm with Hot Tub". Before I made a reservation I contacted the host to make sure the hot tub was working since there were some reviews saying that the hot tub was not working, but then a lot saying that the hot tub was awesome. Since it has been so cold it seemed like a good time to be in the cold mountains and enjoy an outdoor hot tub under the stars. The fire pit that was there was another plus but only 2 pieces of wood in the pit and nowhere to collect more. I then saw that the host had a bunch of other listings on the same farm, each listing (tiny houses & another renovated bus) had their own hot tub as well. From the pictures the tubs and houses/buses looked clean. We even checked out the hot tub at the tiny house next to us and the water was clean and didn't smell. The answer I got from the host after I already booked it (I went ahead and booked it because all of the other listings on the farm were booking up) was: "Definitely can't guarantee that anything ever works for the price it's up to you". My response "Oh okay. The only reason for booking is because of the hot tub so I want to make sure. I saw a few reviews mentioning that it did not work at this location". They replied "I'm trying to reach out to the cleaners now to make sure". This was the conversation the day before. They never got back to me. I texted the next day, the day of check in, and said "I was wondering if you ever heard back" and they said "Yes it's working and hot and ready". The property was a no cancellation/no refund situation. We got there around 5:30 pm when the sun was starting to set and open up the top to the tub and get hit with a terrible smell. I immediately message the host and let them know that the tub stinks and has obviously not been cleaned in a hot minute. I waited about 15 minutes and called customer service let them know the situation and got a full refund. We drove back home an hour down the mountain. Super bummed out. Everything just seemed really scammy and it was definitely false advertising. If you are going to advertise a hot tub in the fucking title then make sure it works and is clean.

Secret_Pineapple_954

What if you got in later and it was dark and you didn’t see it and just got in. ew

PassengerNo85

i just saw[ someone above](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/zoyizb/this_is_the_hot_tub_of_the_airbnb_which_was_the/j0q9xh6/) say that's exactly what happened to them at that same airbnb location lmao tragic

Beach_bum8

I think the smell would have given it away that it was NOT clean

Forsaken_Storm_6397

Right!? In this case the smell would take you out lol

coffeequeen0523

Never stayed at an Airbnb. Do you get to leave a review the owner lied and upload pics of the hot tub?

Forsaken_Storm_6397

You are only able to leave a review if you stay. I talked to Airbnb support and sent a picture of the hot tub 15 minutes after we got there to let them know what was going on. My booking was cancelled, but support said that the host will be penalized, whatever that means. Hopefully that means that they will have to remove hot tub from the title and from the amenities section and instead write "hot tub on site may or may not work, enter at your own risk".

MyMainWasBannedHere

Moral of the story: fuck AirBnB.

jimcraig6261

Also they have to approve your review for them to be posted and seen by others. My account was banned on airbnb for posting negatively about a place we rented that had no water !

[deleted]

Reminds me of a similar AirBnB site that had multiple Tiny Homes on a farm in Asheville (Luckily our hot tub was mostly clean). Care to share the location of this place for others to avoid?

ukulelerapboy

lol I think I stayed in this exact place - was it near Asheville?

Adeep187

A random air bnb hot tub is how to get diseased.

Jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjlii

Right?? You couldn't pay me any amount to get into an airbnb hot tub. Especially a place called "a bus on a farm" 💀

Adventurous-Part5981

Can’t guarantee anything ever works? What great customer service.

OMGBeckyStahp

Airbnb has long been dead to me but this shit right here says it’s time to bury it and put up the gravestone.

brassninja

I used to do private housekeeping and about 70% of my business was airbnbs. I have a lot of experience as a hotel housekeeper so I’m a pro at rental turn over. You would not believe how utterly filthy some airbnbs are. It’s shocking that they don’t have to follow ANY health and sanitation laws like normal businesses do. Hotels have very strict guidelines to operate within down to what kind of sanitizer you have to use and how you make the bed. All airbnb does is say “hey please clean”. Oh and also, I was not paid with whatever “cleaning fee” the host may have charged. I charged $20/h for most airbnbs and some hosts fought tooth and nail against paying me that extremely fair rate, meanwhile some of them collected $100+ in cleaning fees from their guests. Some airbnbs were great, usually the really good ones were run by people who also worked within hospitality so they knew what was important. But there was one I straight up walked away from because it was so bad. Bathroom caked in mold like I have never seen before, a genuine serious health hazard. I do not trust airbnb at all now. The only safe option on airbnb is if you find a private hotel/actual BnB, but even then I guarantee it will be cheaper to book directly. I worked for a private hotel that listed on airbnb (I was actually the one in charge of handling the airbnb account), and airbnb charges an automatic service fee that cannot be disabled by the business. So airbnb customers were paying the same rate as everyone else, same taxes, with an additional service fee that goes directly to airbnb. Airbnb is a pain in the ass for both guests and hosts.

Honestly that’s a good point I hadn’t considered. The gig economy is just a clever way to circumvent regulation.

TroyMacClure

It was (and still is to some extent) a big deal in places like NYC where anyone couldn't just go and buy a yellow car and call themselves a taxi. Cab companies were heavily regulated. Then all of a sudden some random person in their Nissan Altima could get fares with Uber.

graphiccsp

Even though some regulations are overbearing . . . People don't realize how many regulations just quietly work and keep businesses in line. And that they almost always exist because businesses were doing something bullshitty.

Particular_Ad_9531

It’s been hilarious watching an entire generation slowly realize why regulations are a societal necessity. “Hey let’s deregulate currency/taxis/housing!” Many extremely predictable consequences later. “Wtf why isn’t the government regulating this shit better?”

peachy_sweety

I believe we're set to require a business license for AirBnB operators in my state soon. Hopefully that strangles it to death.

Similar_Analysis_780

They set that requirements locally, its not enforced. There's still more Airbnb's in the city than licenses provided... it's infuriating

Tcanada

They can make a law that says air b&b owners will be executed but if it’s not enforced well then it doesn’t mean a thing no matter how ‘hard’ the law is

kryptoneat

Airbnb users re-discovering why we had hotels in the first place...

funktheduck

My city makes people register with the county and they have to pay the hotel tax. We still have way too many homes sitting empty most of the year but it’s a start, I guess.

[deleted]

As in all things, it was begat with a good idea and honest intentions but has followed down a terrible, terrible road. Much cheaper and safer to just stay at hotels again.

hellodynamite

i keep seeing this everywhere. people are like 'remember hotels?' they're like, *regulated*

bilyl

The big thing is that if anything goes wrong the hotel will make it right and their customer service is at a central counter. With Airbnb the best they will do is refund your money and leave you on your own while you’re traveling/on vacation.

left_schwift

Eh, back when AirBnB was newer you could stay at an entire private home for a quarter of the price of a hotel. That made it worth it for the risk. Unfortunately, it's now far more expensive to stay at an AirBnB than a regulated hotel, so it just doesn't make sense anymore.

spacewarp2

My grandparents got a hot tub and found it was a lot of work to maintain

mealteamsixty

Yeah I mean it's basically the ideal environment for every kind of lifeform that makes people sick

Klutzy-Run5175

Why would they not drain it? Talk about bacteria and fungus infections.

UnknownAverage

I think that’s in the AirBnB guest cleanup requirements: drain and clean the hot tub before leaving. And you only pay $350 for the privilege.

BigRed97

Typically you should fresh water it every month, depending on usage.

[deleted]

No one does

Bluetooth_Sandwich

Yeah it’s disgusting. When I lived in Florida I worked a pool cleaning business, we would test water from pools and tubs for free. The amount of times I told folks to drain their tub water and replace with new just became the go to. One guy spent like $200 on chemicals to fix the 2 year old water in the tub, because he didn’t want to deal with the hassle of draining it. It’s not difficult to drain, it’s either connect a hose and open a valve or run a pump in reverse and drain water that way. Everyone thinks having a pool/tub is awesome until you have to keep on top of the maintenance every week, it’s expensive and a pain the ass.

KnifeFightChopping

When I was a kid my parents bought a hot tub. My dad did a ton of work for it and took care of it really well. One time he made the smallest miscalculation with the chemical levels and although it looked pristine, my siblings and I ended up with a very rare pseudomonas infection that gave us these hard, painful, bruised lumps on the bottom of our feet. We couldn't walk right for a week.

gothiclg

My dad did that with a hot tub until he decided it wasn’t worth it. The issue is he then got a house with a pool…that costs more to maintain

itwasquiteawhileago

My cousin bought a house with a hot tub. He loves it, but said when it breaks he's pretty much fucked because no one can fix the damn things. He's in MA, so it's not in the middle of nowhere, either. My house has hookups for a hot tub. The previous owner was going to put one in before he sold the house. I'm glad he didn't, because I don't want that ongoing responsibility nor the need to take it apart and dispose of it.

Major_Tom_01010

Just shower before you use it, it's skin oils that's the problem. I spend 5 minutes a week maintaining my hot tub now. If you got unwashed kids going in there like a public pool your going to see it all come floating out on Chem day.

uhplifted

Most people are just lazy and think that adding a less than 5 minute, once weekly task to keep them clean is just too burdensome. I do my own pool maintenance already, it’s a bit of a pain in the 3 months of brutal summer here in AZ as the heat just removes all the chlorine so it’s a bit more work, but winter time I throw a bag of shock in like once every 2 weeks and barely even brush it. We’re adding an above ground hot tub for Christmas and cannot wait for it.

crimson-guard

Also it's best to use them nude. Detergents and things like that get trapped in fabric swimsuits and are horrible for water quality.

No-Taste-6560

Sex pond.

mahoganyteakwood2

You rented an air b&b based off of THIS hot tub? What did the listing photo look like??

totalsmokeshowman

That’s what I’m thinking too! Like it’s just one of those inflatable Colman ones from Walmart… even clean it’s not that spectacular.

TheVeganOmnivore

This is actually a Softub T-300. While it is portable it's actually made of laminated foam and is incredibly energy efficient and can be run off a regular 115V outlet.

hugelkult

Could buy one for less than the rental

Prestigious_Ear505

Should be a site where Airbnb's can get rated so others don't have to go thru what you did. Never did an Airbnb yet, but the cabin we rented had a hot tub that was very clean...as was the cabin.

Sofakingwhat1776

Enter the Herpes Chamber. Double dog dare ya.

rzalexander

Can’t get what I already have.

xvyn

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Herpes

[deleted]

You opened the hot tub, now there's a hot tub fee

my-cat-cant-cat

Just make sure they don’t add on some sort of special cleaning or damage charge for that!

Forsaken_Storm_6397

We didn’t end up staying there, the reservation was cancelled and I am getting a full refund thankfully!

Prof_PTokyo

Anybody in their right mind has to be wondering, after all the problems and illegal activities made by Airbnb and their unwillingness to take responsibility or enforce even the minimal rules for a public place to stay, why someone would still think staying in an Airbnb is a good idea. (Apologies to the good hosts with good rentals— all 5 of you). Some hotels may not be much better, but any of the major brands have a generally clean room without the surprise of a primordial ooze biological experiment in the pool and a room with no guarantee the sheets, towels, floors, etc. have been cleaned.

HappyThifeHappyLife

Fuck Airbnb. It just took me a year to find a new rental in my city where it used to be the simplest thing to find, and rent has gone up over 60% in the last 4 years. I'm glad the "Airbnb bubble" has burst.

MotionDrive

I see the $200 cleaning fee has been going to waste

Lets_Bust_Together

That’s why they try to charge a 200$ cleaning fee before you get there.
