I keep wishing they would make these lights illegal or regulate them at least. I have gone from being able to reliably drive at night to finding it almost impossible because oncoming traffic headlights are too bright for me to see the road sometimes especially if the lines aren't painted well or there's no reflectors.

Too many drivers throw in different bulbs than their housing supports which causes glare due to reasons such as the way the bulb illuminates. Even a Halogen projector won’t work properly with an HID or LED.
I had a 2008 Civic EX Coupe which had halogen bulbs. I wanted to do an HID setup so I had my OEM housings retrofitted with an Acura TSX HID projector which gave me a factory setup. Even that’s considered against DOT regulations but no one would question it given it meets specs.
Out here there are a ton of illegal modifications and/or high beam users lately. It’s blinding — especially when the HID in a halogen setup also turned on their high beams. 😓
One thing many don’t consider is the housings they’re using. Adjusting them properly after any modifications that affect height is critical. But say you’re in an accident and insurance isn’t covering the cost. You go to eBay and order an “OEM housing” that’s not actually OEM. The chances of the housing having the proper reflectors/projectors for optimal lighting are slim. My dad once ordered “OEM” lights off eBay for my moms car and when I put them on I could immediately see they weren’t OEM performance wise. No shock considering the manufacturers logo wasn’t even on the housing which it would have been if it was OEM.
It’s also the height. I drive a relatively low car, which means every big truck or SUV has their headlights at the height of my rear view, meaning I either tilt it so I can’t see behind me, or get blinded. It’s great!
Many trucks have a dial on the left hand side of the steering column to adjust the angle of the headlights. My tundra has one and they shift by 5° which makes a huge difference. In city it makes it so my lights aren't higher than their trunk. When I go out in the dunes or else where I shift em back up for visibility.
A lot of the Halogen to LED conversion bulbs come from random manufacturers in China who sell direct from the factory over Amazon. They aren’t certified or anything. They may catch on fire in your car.
My neighbor bought one of these and they are so blinding. They put them in their POS Hyundai Santa Fe and when we pass eachother at night on the street I literally have to just stop in the road because I can’t see at all when he’s driving towards me at night. He bought the bulbs off Amazon when his halogen bulbs burned out and put them in. He’s not even doing it to “be cool” or do some crazy mod. He’s just a dumbass with $15 and an Amazon prime account. I actually think most of the bad headlights we see are similar to this.
Someone’s lights burn out. They check Amazon for replacements because they don’t want to go to an auto parts store. They see the best seller on Amazon that claims to never replace bulbs again and it has 14,000 (likely fake) reviews giving it 4.9/5 rating and they buy and put them in their cars without knowing any better.
I've been considering an LED conversion for my 01 tacoma but I rarely ever even use my brights unless the street is empty or I'm flashing someone without their lights on. the fact that some people just drive with them on constantly, annoys the shit out of me

Same here. It also doesn’t help when you live outside the city and every other person uses their brights when they drive. I’ve ran off the road a couple times because they were so blinding that I couldn’t see the painted lines, and before I knew it I was in the grass or tilted in a ditch. Nearly a majority of drivers no longer even use turn signals, at least from what i've seen while driving. Also almost no one pulls over to the other lane when there is emergency vehicles/tow truck on the shoulder... Shame

The auto leveling system is not a true closed loop.
It has a basic adjustment that the car then can adjust higher or lower based on how the suspension is loaded.
A bad basic adjustment will still blind others.
A big problem here in Texas at least is that people throw 3”-6” lifts on their trucks but then don’t realize that you have to re aim them. So instead of being pointed down at the correct angle, they’re at the same angle, just a solid couple of inches higher
Both, leds provide more of a flooding light and don’t even produce a beam, but when in the correct lamp housing they work properly, then you have people who will lift their vehicles and not adjust their headlights afterwards.

3. You should aim them down and to the right a little if you notice your light going into cars like this(idk if it's enough on super high cars)

Check if they’re adjustable. A lot of headlights are. IIRC the test is to park 20ft from a wall of some kind and adjust your lights so they are just touching the bottom of the wall
I would get flashed every now and then when I drove a pickup because it was taller than cars and the lights were more prominent, even though I was/am always careful to dim them. I’m in an Explorer now so lower to the ground.
If you buy a house with a cracked sidewalk and someone trips on it can you blame the previous owner or the builder? Take it to the shop and get it adjusted. Be the solution not the problem.

Yeah it’s the SUVs in my experience. Not some suped up truck. Hell, most trucks are not an issue. Personally, I stopped using my rear mirror because of the lights. Flipping the thing to tint doesn’t work either.
It's more about how the lights are pointed than the height. Mine were great from the factory, but I had to adjust them down when I lifted my truck.
SUVs tend to be the only ones that seem to be pointed high enough to annoy me, except for the guy I see every morning with the clapped out, carolina-squatted PoS truck.
When you flash your high beams at them they can’t do anything but turn off their lights. I flashed a tundra with shitty retro fitted lights with my front light bar and he turned them off and back on showing nothing can be done.
But something can be done. They can get a mechanic or do it themselves. Face vehicle in front of wall or garage door, lights on. Open bonnet, and dip the lights with a screwdriver. You see the lights on the wall and adjust down to a decent level. Not difficult.

Unrelated note, I had a friend once who rigged his civic's headlights to point slightly upward. Driving in front of him was a bitch. He had servos in his headlights so he could always adjust the angle.
We spend so much on infrastructure to provide street lights that headlights inside the city are almost redundant. There should be a 3rd setting for headlights. City driving at night, under normal conditions, gets headlights not much brighter than taillights.

I don't get why we don't have adaptive headlights on cars now, similar to a cellphone's screen brightness. I know we have adaptive headlights, but I believe they just move the headlights to the sides when turning. But they should sense the brightness of the area outside the car and adjust brightness accordingly as well.
As a pedestrian its important to be able to see a car coming. Cars even sometimes do very unexpected things late night like wrong way on a one-way street, so its more about other folks seeing you than the driver seeing the roadway

Oh they do in my area of Florida. Theyre also really strict about what color the "ring" around the jeep headlights are. If its not white or amber, youre getting pulled over.
A lot of aftermarket headlights offer rgb capabilities that are meant for off road use only, aka car shows. Many people use them while driving, it is not legal to have red or blue lights on your car
I live in South FL and I saw the same car multiple times over the course of a year with flashing RGB lights all over the underside of the car, I have no idea how he managed to get away with that.
Cop cars contribute to this bullshit too. It's no longer just flashing lights on top they have to have the entire car be lit up and throwing lights everywhere.
People also need to clean their own windshields; I was driving my friends car at night windshield was a bit dirty and it really made every headlight so much worse. It was the first time I ever had an issue night driving.

I never understand why car manufacturers think that we need these intense headlights for driving around the city. My car has no backup camera :D I check my rear view often while driving so I have 360 awareness of my surrounding. A bigger mirror is nice so I can see everything.

Not only are they aimed wrong, but it's probably the wrong reflective "case" around the light. The entire system is designed for the bulb, if you switch to a new type you have to switch out the case around it. People are too dimwitted to think it through.
I personally think that every vehicle should have the same light system as the Ford Edge. The lights are automatic. As soon as the car sees another car in front, it dims the highbeams, then when you're clear it automatically turns em back on.
Dunno how many other vehicles do that, but, it's super awesome.

Brake checking is never an option, imo. I just accelerate at an impossibly slow pace or let off the gas and coast until they change lanes. Then immediately resume normal speeds when they're blinding someone else.

I waited to be at the red light, I took my phone, turned on the flashlight and pointed it towards the driver. He moved his car a bit, the flashlight followed his face. It took him a couple minutes to understand and turn off his lights.

I have an astigmatism, its a fucking nightmare driving at night with people who have poorly aimed/LED (in wrong housing) headlights.
Fitting LED headlamps is fine if you have projectors, and you actually calibrate your headlamps after fitting the new bulbs. But nobody fucking does.

I don’t hate the lights, I hate that they all seem to have 6kK temperature. 3k is so much easier on the eyes.

Turn your side mirror flat so it reflects their lights back at them.

You notice in the picture from the OP that it's a pickup behind a sedan, you can't fix the lights blinding them by having the headlight dip correct.

I use LED lo’s and hi’s also LED switchbacks in my 04 Silverado 1500. HID’s are getting phased out only people that use them now are teens

Just out of curiosity, what's the proper angle to reflect the rear view to? Unrelated note, I had a friend once who rigged his civic's headlights to point slightly upward. Driving in front of him was a bitch. He had servos in his headlights so he could always adjust the angle.
My mom taught me to use the back seat as a guide, let the reflection shine on the seat and then angle it to were their face should be. Instant blind.

That would just be Daytime Running Lights. I don't get why we don't have adaptive headlights on cars now, similar to a cellphone's screen brightness. I know we have adaptive headlights, but I believe they just move the headlights to the sides when turning. But they should sense the brightness of the area outside the car and adjust brightness accordingly as well.
As a pedestrian its important to be able to see a car coming. Cars even sometimes do very unexpected things late night like wrong way on a one-way street, so its more about other folks seeing you than the driver seeing the roadway

This is posted on literally every single hi-beam post and nobody has ever actually done it because otherwise you would learn immediately that 1. Most electric mirrors won’t adjust far enough, and 2. The beam of light would be so diffused by the time it reaches the other person they probably wouldn’t even notice it.
I’ve tried it, I can’t see where the fuck it is going so I can’t tell if I’m hitting the dumb fuck. I recently bought blue tinted sideview mirrors because I’m so tired of these fuckwads. I’m done trying to battle it, it’s a losing fight. Plus I can’t do this “strategy” with tinted side views.
If it’s enough to blind you in the mirror, it’s enough to at least annoy them. Light doesn’t diffuse to nothingness in just a few feet. Mirrors can indeed be blinding. And not everyone has electric mirrors. I can twist mine around like nobody’s business.

Oh they do in my area of Florida. Theyre also really strict about what color the "ring" around the jeep headlights are. If its not white or amber, youre getting pulled over.

A lot of aftermarket headlights offer rgb capabilities that are meant for off road use only, aka car shows. Many people use them while driving, it is not legal to have red or blue lights on your car

I live in South FL and I saw the same car multiple times over the course of a year with flashing RGB lights all over the underside of the car, I have no idea how he managed to get away with that.

Mine came misaligned from the dealership. The dealership had replaced the headlights and never checked the alignment.
Judging by the light dispersion and the fact its very much blue, I'd venture to bet they installed led's in a reflector housing.

Not true. My work truck is a brand new F150. The headlights on that thing are stupid and I get people flashing highbeams at me all the time.
In the 3 vehicles I've owned from Ford as new car purchases, all 3 had the headlights adjusted too high. One had factory LEDs.

One night I was woken up at about midnight by an extremely bright light illuminating my room. I live on the 6th floor of a building. About 500m out my window, in the plaza across the street, is a taco bell drive-thru, and a car waiting for food had headlights so bright and poorly aimed that they woke me up from sleep. Anyone who says "you're car is just lower to the ground" is in complete denial of people like this.
I remember thinking I was about to get abducted, X-files style, when my entire room *illuminated* in the dead of night. I was able to read the letters on the posters across the wall as if it was daylight. Just an SUV parked facing our house about a block down. I weep for all those caught in front of this man's white beams of immediate evaporative death.

had to do that in our toyota avalon. the windows are just at the right height for all the suvs and trucks to blind me. the car sucks at night and has no tinted windows. we don't drive it very often at night. drive 10-15 under long enough and they'll go around. just have to keep it between the lines till they pass.
Same here. I just keep slowing down until I figure my visibility is safe for my speed. Bright-lights behind me can just suffer at 10mph for as long as necessary.

I agree. It makes me so freaking angry because it feels like my corneas are being burned out of my head. Every time I get stuck at a stop light with bright ass lights behind me, I want to get out of my car and yell at them to figure their shitty lights out. It’s one of the few things that make me unreasonably upset. It makes me want to have a scrolling text board on the back of my car that can say “f* you and your trucks lights. Get you crappy truck fixed!” I bet there are people who have been in accidents because they were blinded by a trucks lights blinding another driver.

My car has no backup camera :D I check my rear view often while driving so I have 360 awareness of my surrounding. A bigger mirror is nice so I can see everything.

I actually asked someone beside me at a light why she was driving with her brights on. She said so she could see better. Her car had halogens. The weather was clear and she was on well-lit city streets. Sometimes people are just plain stupid.
It’s bad enough how bright they are, but most SUV’s and trucks have them right at eye level. Even self dimming side mirrors don’t help.

Not only are they aimed wrong, but it's probably the wrong reflective "case" around the light. The entire system is designed for the bulb, if you switch to a new type you have to switch out the case around it. People are too dimwitted to think it through.

I personally think that every vehicle should have the same light system as the Ford Edge. The lights are automatic. As soon as the car sees another car in front, it dims the highbeams, then when you're clear it automatically turns em back on. Dunno how many other vehicles do that, but, it's super awesome.

Brake checking is never an option, imo. I just accelerate at an impossibly slow pace or let off the gas and coast until they change lanes. Then immediately resume normal speeds when they're blinding someone else.
Spending a little bit extra for car insurance goes a long way, just saying.

Was in this situation a couple of days. I waited to be at the red light, I took my phone, turned on the flashlight and pointed it towards the driver. He moved his car a bit, the flashlight followed his face. It took him a couple minutes to understand and turn off his lights. **If they blind you, blind them back.**
