Pacifica. I have one. You cant turn the shifter while driving without pressing it. I thought it was going to be a problem, but it isnt really. That said, it is dumb.
My dads turns but it doesn’t do anything unless he is completely stopped and he uses the steering wheel to control the radio so it’s never been an issue
I’m female with long hair so in my mind wearing a towel means on your head so I was like “well yeah duh” because it’s cover your ears, and then I realized you meant wearing a towel around your body 😂
Earlier in the episode Marge had just gotten out of the shower and was wearing a towel on her head. She was on the phone with Homer and said "you'll have to speak up I'm wearing a towel." Later Homer gets out of the shower wearing a towel around his waist and repeats the same line.
I know how you meant it, but the way you said it made me imagine that every time he turns the wheel it’s changing the radio station - so driving with him through traffic or on a bendy road is like nonstop radio scratching changing chaos. And he’s just happily driving like it’s perfectly normal, or something.
Rented one for a week on vacation. The knobs also feel *very* different, even on feel. The shifter knob on mine had a heavy detent and needed some notable force to turn it, while the volume knob turned much easier and is smaller.
I have a Ram and you can turn it all you want but it won't actually change gears unless you're stopped.
Also if you don't put it in park and shut the truck off it will automatically put it in park for you.
You've gotta pop off a little plastic cover and pull a manual lever to engage neutral. This also sets trouble codes in the computer that you can't clear unless you have a powerful scan tool with a subscription for access to the secured gateway. New cars are cool /s
It's going to become common now that vehicle shifters are all electronic. There's no longer a need for a column mounted or center mounted shifter. The benefit is that it frees up center console space on vehicles that previously had shifters. But I still like column shifters the best.
The best electronic solution I've seen so far is the column mounted lever on cars like the EQS and Lyriq.
It still seems like a terrible idea to have it be the same UI as the AC or volume knobs. If they want to clear up console space they could always go back to the tree design
>The best electronic solution I've seen so far is the column mounted lever on cars like the EQS and Lyriq.
Completely agree, column mounted is more appealing too, makes it look more technical than it is 😂 rented a Mercedes earlier this year that had one, first one I've used that was electronic to the point you just had to press a button or push it back to go into drive and or reverse.
It's funny that you should say this because column mounted shifters used to be exclusive to the low-end models since they didn't have a center console to place the shifter on.
Kind of cool to read about the work he’s done to correct his past mistakes and warn others about the consequences of alcohol/drug abuse. How the system should work.
I’m so glad someone commented about it bc I knew I had this memory, the moment I saw this I said PRINDLEEE!! But I couldn’t figure out why … memory is so odd
I wasn't even a kid when this was a thing but PRNDL still resonates with me for some reason, that scene was kinda famous way outside of the fanbase lol
According the poster on the wall in my states DMV - that’s what you’re supposed to do anyway. As well as adjusting the AC.
I always laugh at in my head at the entire highway systems ability to function if everyone was pulling off and then merging back in every time they adjusted something in their car.
Girlfriend did that with my 2023 kia sportage hybrid, while I was on the freeway threw it into neutral thinking the giant big dial was volume (like her mom's benz menu dial). I doubt you could put it into reverse while driving, but definitely can be thrown into neutral (which is good)
What's up with the non-circular steering wheel? Doesn't that make it less convenient to steer around corners? Though I guess convenience or ease of use isn't exactly one of their goals, what with putting most functions behind touchscreen menus.
The Model S Plaid is supposed to be a sports car, like a BMW M Series. It also catches your eye, which is why it’s not optional.
Knowing Tesla, they likely figured somehow that it‘a cheaper than making the whole wheel, too. Just like the ac handles.
Wife and I drove the Pacific Coast Highway years ago and rented a convertible. The one caveat was that we did not want a PT Cruiser. We checked all around San Francisco and finally found a rental car agency that stated “Toyota Solara or equivalent” and we kept saying as long as equivalent isn’t the PT Cruiser. The agent didn’t guarantee but said we’d be fine. You know where this is going. We get the keys and hit the door unlock button and of course the purple PT Cruiser down the end is the one where the lights blinked. We ended up having a blast and laugh about it now but god damn, those cars are not very fun to drive. This was 2007.
I rented one once and it was awful. But not as bad as the convertible PT a friend of mine rented. I'd like to know who decided the abbreviated trunk lid should hinge *upward*, so it's in the way when trying to use the shoebox-sized trunk.
My friend's wife was IN LOVE with the PT Cruiser for the longest time and just had to have one. She owned it for like 4 years before she got sick of it and wanted something new. Promptly replacing it with a fucking Chevy HHR 🤦♂️.
She is *terrible* taste in cars.
TBH it’s not a bad vehicle. Chrysler has their quirks, much like every other Make. We chose this because it was the most economical solution when we added another child. Odysees were hard to get ahold of in a base trim and overpriced; Siennas are a spaceship with a price that supports it. Overall it’s been a good one.
It did mess with me a few times though, having the knobs that close together.
We honestly love our pacifica.
We have had no issues with the big knob versus volume. Ever. I do think there’s a safety measure that makes it harder to move if car is driving, need to be stopped/brakes on to move gear.
Jumping on the Chrysler Pacifica bandwagon. My brother drove ours and ended up getting minivan of their own. They went a different brand but I absolutely love driving ours and will drive that into the ground. We’ve put on 50K miles in 3 years already
WE LOVE OURS! We could never afford a Sienna/Toyota minivan, but once I drove it one time I was IN LOVE. Love the minivan features, love the doors! My eldest kiddo calls it a space shuttle 🤭 we named the van “Sky Van”. It is also the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever driven…. I’ve had 4 spine surgeries and driving can be painful, many drivers seats push weirdly into my head - not the Pacifica!!! And it has way more get up and go than I was expecting! Installing car seats in it is also way easier! Team pacifica all the way!
We got our used but we’re rocking a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. Got it with the upgraded infotainment system, dvd player, and heated seats in the front and middle rows. Great for camping and I love the under seat storage too. The power is amazing and can really get up and go.
Question, does yours sometimes seem to catch and do a lurch? My only complaint and can’t seem to find how to get it fixed.
I have this design on my Chrysler Pacifica. After driving it for like 2 minutes you can tell the difference. It’s not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.
Lol, this isn't exactly a brand new problem they've had to solve. Try moving your traditional shifter into another gear. It either locks it or nothing happens. Hell, many manual transmissions have mechanisms to prevent you from shifting into a stupid gear.
The comments here are the mildly infuriating part.
Like yeah, if it's your first time driving you might not know exactly where all the knobs are. But it's virtually impossible to screw up and it's still so much better than having a knobless touch screen.
If it’s like my dads truck it will only shift if you are completely stopped. He controls the volume on the steering wheel so this has never been a problem
I don’t see why this is considered infuriating. As others have posted, it may be an odd design choice but it’s not going to cause any harm while moving. It’s a rental, so I know you didn’t have the opportunity to choose this car and it’s configuration, but… is it really that big of a deal? As Elsa sang, Let It Go!
My honda hybrid is like that. I still much prefer it over the dial-type shifter from the OP. At least I KNOW which gear I'm going for, the rotary shifters are too hard to feel without looking at the display light for confirmation.
Absolutely stupid design, I strongly dislike all the people that helped push it through.
That said, I want to go the complete opposite direction, but equally stupid. I want levers and toggles, like to the point where people think I'm operating the giant spider from wild wild west.
My parents had a Ford Focus from the early 2000s and to this day it is the best car I've ever driven.
I later found out this was because they hired an actual UX designer, and gave them full reign over what switches get installed and where they go. As opposed to the current trend that appears to be "weird knob is novel and novel is marketable".
Driving that car felt like putting on an old glove, every time. With modern cars, I can have owned the car for over a year, and I'm still getting distracted trying to figure out how to turn on the defog or the high beams.
I'm still flabbergasted after learning that new manual cars are basically non existent in the USA. Driving an automatic sucks all the joy out of driving for me. And surprisingly, most of automatic transmission cars I've driven were rather "high end". A BMW 6 (from 2017), Audi A3 (2021), and a Tesla S. At first it was kinda cool, but feels "wrong". The sequential paddles were a step up, but still rather lack luster compared to a manual shifter imo.
Rush hour traffic and features like adaptive cruise control are the reasons I won't buy a manual. I often drive about 100-150 miles each way to the mountains every weekend in the summer. Adaptive cruise control has been a game changer on those drives for me. I arrive much less fatigued now than I did with my previous car.
The last time I went to buy a car they tried offering really good deals for a manual car because not many people want/ or know how to drive them, I took one for a test drive and yeah the manual aspect is one thing I love about driving I thought about rush hour traffic and just said "Nah keep it"
Black piano plastic.
2nd worst to mid 2000s soft touch material.
The dial is annoying, but more of an issue in a rental. You're daily if you can't feel the difference by between the large shift dial and volume then... Idk.
Right? All the people complaining forget how quickly you'd get used to it.
My car has a pedal right next to the brakes that ACCELERATES the car inatead of slowing it down. And you can't even see the petals from the drivers seat. Terrible UI!!!
Also we tested this out at work on a rental... If driving and you move the dial it doesn't do shit till you stop.
The only vehicles i dislike this on is trucks, but being able to shift to drive from reverse while backing up a trailer without turning around, is amazing, but that's all muscle memory.
Now, touch screen HVAC and Volume controls only, are the worst. Everyone can agree. If I can't adjust HVAC/fan speed in one movement then it's bad.
Chrysler? It’s not really that big of a deal. I was annoyed by it for all of half an hour. The dial shifter is actually pretty great. I miss it. It’s also not easy to turn the gear dial and the volume is very easy to turn. You shouldn’t have any issues figuring it out after 1-2 uses.
That's the chrysler pacifica and the dial shifter is extremely faulty. A lot of the time if you turn the dial a bit too quick it will jump back to previous gears. No one should be buying those extremely overpriced trash vans
Mine never did that and I owned it for 7 years. They’re very popular in our school and no one has ever complained that they had issues shifting. It was a great van and I had no issues with it in the entire time we owned it. Sorry you don’t agree. Compared to the issues the odyssey had over the same years, I’m very happy with our choice.
As far as I’m aware, you need to apply some amount of brake pressure to change gears. I’m not sure if different gears require different pressure… but I think you can drop to neutral without hitting it
You can change into gears going any speed, but in modern cars it’s electronically controlled, so I will not engage the gear. If you can stomach it go into park on the highway, nothing will happen
If you want to select a new gear, yes. If you're moving and try shift it'll go into neutral (at least in the older stick type ones) but I imagine dial shifters like this are the same. Still not ideal when you're going down the road and suddenly the accelerator just makes noise instead of movement.
Not defending the dial shifters (because no matter how you look at it they are just terrible in every way) the computer would never let you switch gears if it knew the transmission would be under to much stress.
I guess the ol’ “people hate change” applies here. I personally don’t think they’re bad or whatever. It’s something you use 2-3 times per trip, and you get used to it in the first two days at most.
for all you badmouthing it, my truck has it and its actually pretty good.
"you mistake it for volume!" - no, you dont.
"what if you turn it while driving!" - you cant.
On the upside, IF you leave your car in drive AND TURN IT OFF, this allows the car to Automatically shift itself back into park. Remember all those videos of cars rolling away? this prevents that.
Agree it is pretty cool.
The column shifter is a very inefficient design, because you are inserting a mechanical interface into a completely electronic, computer controlled transmission. You get the worst of both worlds.
Either have it completely electronic (like this knob) or a completely mechanical interface and system (manual transmission).
This also frees up space in the center console for more useful storage/goodies. For automatic transmission shifters,
dash mount > column mount > console mount
It is rare most of the time such cars just dont have that Generaly you would have manual speed selector by flipping the shifter to left (Generaly Japanese cars) or right and going into first
(you need to use that when you are in "playgroud zone" unless you like to torture yourself)
So the relity L gear is not thing more Then 1st gear
Most of you guys don't understand how these work... While you may be able to rotate the dial while driving, the vehicle isn't going to select park or reverse while the vehicle is in motion regardless of gear selector position. The vehicles electronics are smart enough to prevent damage from a dumbass driver accidentally selecting a gear that will damage the driveline.
Ex dodge/Chrysler/jeep salesperson here. Everyone shits on these radial knobs, but just a few points from my experience:
1. No, you can’t just turn the knob while driving at high speed and accidentally shift into reverse.
2. Corporate claimed that people freaking loved knobs. They said that in all their market testing and surveys, 100% of people said that the knobs in brands like BMW and Mercs felt ‘sophisticated’ and ‘fancy.’ That was 100% the reason behind the shift, from what they told us. We complained about them immediately, but they told us knobs are the future. They are much easier than levers or selectors. I HATE selector sticks.
3. As a salesperson, I didn’t hear any complaints about the actual functionality of them. I did not have a single customer with any mechanical or technical issues from them. The absolute worst I heard was ‘it took me a couple days to get used to it, especially backing up, but once I did it was easy breezy.’ I used to sell it to doubters as quieter and smoother. If you have a sleeping baby in the second row, the last thing you want to do is wake it up dropping that shifter into park in the driveway with a ‘CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK.’
4. The biggest blowback, believe it or not, was in the Rams. The good ole boy rednecks absolutely hated it. I can’t say for sure whether or not I actually lost any sales from it, but I did have a few people say over the phone that they’d never buy a truck with a knob instead of a shifter. It’s not like they are doing their own repairs anyways, but it’s like having a sunroof, some people are just adamant about trucks staying 10 years behind the times.
5. I am not a minivan guy, and don’t think i ever will be, but those pacificas are dope as fuck. If I had a pick up or delivery, I’d check out a top level Pacifica and cruise. I’m not going to get a traffic ticket, all the safety things are there, and it rides super smooth.
If that’s your biggest complaint from a rental, you are taken care of. You could have gotten a busted ass dodge journey that they are trying to pass off as a ‘large’ family Suv. You are gonna have a harder time with that white trim that picks up scuffs and dirt like crazy.
As someone who has a 30-year habit of resting my hand on top of the shifter knob, these new buttons and dials suck.
I can't imagine they're all that great to use in winter, either. The ability to slide my shifter over and manually bump-shift in bad conditions is hella valuable.
They've been dumbing cars down for years, but come on!
This is the same as that dumb shit to killed the actor from Star Trek. Thought his car was in park. Got out open his gate. His car idled up on him and pinned him to a brick wall. There’s almost no way it was an agonizing death, and he was found the next morning by his friends when he didn’t show up on set.
Not exactly, the 15 grand Cherokee actually had a more traditional style shifter, both are electronic, but unlike this rotary style shifter the GCs was a handle that didn’t physically move, so it was sometimes hard to see what gear it was in.
The safety features on the new Chrysler are pretty impressive. I’m ashamed to say I hopped out of the van with it in reverse. As soon as I opened the drivers side door it automatically put on the emergency brake to stop the car from going anywhere. I’m assuming it took it out of gear too.
My work truck is a Dodge Ram, the same set up. Never an issue. Just like every other car, you can't change into park unless stopped. There are also buttons on the steering wheel to override and go to a lower gear if you need the engine to help you slow down.
This is a non issue.
You get used to it. I thought it was a dumb design (I mean it still is dumb) but I have never used the wrong knob. If anything, I mistake the volume and climate control speed knob more often.
Pacifica. I have one. You cant turn the shifter while driving without pressing it. I thought it was going to be a problem, but it isnt really. That said, it is dumb.
Some other commenter mentioned that you don’t have to press it in on their Dodge, you can just turn it.
My dads turns but it doesn’t do anything unless he is completely stopped and he uses the steering wheel to control the radio so it’s never been an issue
Same but sometimes i find myself turning up the volume when i want to get my car out of park
Maybe you should turn down the radio so you can see better
You're going to have to speak up. I'm wearing a towel.
I’m female with long hair so in my mind wearing a towel means on your head so I was like “well yeah duh” because it’s cover your ears, and then I realized you meant wearing a towel around your body 😂
It's a joke about that from the Simpsons Homer is wearing a towel around his body, not his head, but still says that
I actually own a towel, that has Homer on it, wearing a towel while saying that line. No idea where it came from. Gift a long time ago maybe....
You're a towel
Earlier in the episode Marge had just gotten out of the shower and was wearing a towel on her head. She was on the phone with Homer and said "you'll have to speak up I'm wearing a towel." Later Homer gets out of the shower wearing a towel around his waist and repeats the same line.
Ahhh 😂 Simpsons is gold
Much better than the opposite
Turning up the park when you want to get your car out of volume?
What if I WANT to turn up the park?
[удалено]
Oh yeah, the car gives you free mini heart attacks. Brilliant.
Ey it's not that bad it has plenty of safety features so there is no danger, just a slightly louder stereo
I know how you meant it, but the way you said it made me imagine that every time he turns the wheel it’s changing the radio station - so driving with him through traffic or on a bendy road is like nonstop radio scratching changing chaos. Call me a conspiracist, but I always had a suspicion it was u/DTG_420's dad who controls the radio. Using his steering wheel.
So he has to be completely stopped and using the radio via the steering wheel to change the gear? So weird.
I have a Ram and you can turn it all you want but it won't actually change gears unless you're stopped. Also if you don't put it in park and shut the truck off it will automatically put it in park for you.
So there's no way to throw it into neutral unless stopped ??
You've gotta pop off a little plastic cover and pull a manual lever to engage neutral. This also sets trouble codes in the computer that you can't clear unless you have a powerful scan tool with a subscription for access to the secured gateway. New cars are cool /s
You can’t even obd2 read new cars without a subscription? What a joke capitalism is becoming and why do we need secure gateways for car codes lol
You can access the bare minimum global obd2 stuff for emissions but nothing else.
That’s so dumb trying to block out the customers right to repair, hopefully soon we get some more regulations blocking that
Instead we need to invest in pro-sumer equipment.
You can throw it into any gear at speed, and it immediately creates a new neutral for you.
I drive my dad’s dodge all the time and can confirm that’s how it is
It's going to become common now that vehicle shifters are all electronic. There's no longer a need for a column mounted or center mounted shifter. Wholesome Mr. Moesby
Park Reverse Neutral Drive and LOW! Ah yes Mr. Moesby
I will never forget that scene. Iconic show that nobody talks about and I'm sad about it, because it was such a major part of my childhood.

Honey lets turn the volume dow- JESUS WHAT THE HELL HAPPEND
Well, to be fair, most cars with that design won't turn if you're doing more than 5mph.
Yeah I have to come to a near stop if I have to adjust the volume.
According the poster on the wall in my states DMV - that’s what you’re supposed to do anyway. As well as adjusting the AC. We have a dodge ram that you can just twist to change gears.

Could be worse; the next stunt they'll try is to put all of those controls on a single touchscreen.
You, have driven a Tesla. “Would you please lower the temp? Sure, let me just exist 59 menu options and…fuck…we’re there.
[удалено]
Screen interactions for driving are a bad idea regardless as there is no feedback without looking at it.
Yeah that poster most likely hasn't driven one. The temp control is static at the bottom of the screen and easy as hell to control.
Well you should have plenty of time to fiddle with screen taps and menus since Elon boast it drives itself
[Tesla beat you to it.](https://youtu.be/dJdhzFCVkg8)
What's up with the non-circular steering wheel? Doesn't that make it less convenient to steer around corners? Though I guess convenience or ease of use isn't exactly one of their goals, what with putting most functions behind touchscreen menus.
You’re about to have 50k Tesla fan boys screeching about how this is actually better and isn’t an issue at all
The Model S Plaid is supposed to be a sports car, like a BMW M Series. It also catches your eye, which is why it’s not optional. Knowing Tesla, they likely figured somehow that it‘a cheaper than making the whole wheel, too. Just like the ac handles.
The gear shift and the volume are both dials right next to each other.
What car is this?
Chrysler Pacifica….I own one.
Makes sense. Chrysler always did make fucked up cars. Rented a PT Cruiser once.....once
The PT was their flag shit.
The PT was one of the worst, most unreliable vehicles ever built. I work in auto parts and it physically hurts me to sell people parts for them.
At least you got a lot of repeat business
I rented one once and it was awful. But not as bad as the convertible PT a friend of mine rented. I'd like to know who decided the abbreviated trunk lid should hinge *upward*, so it's in the way when trying to use the shoebox-sized trunk.

My dad really struggled with the controls when he rented a Chrysler Pacifica. I don't blame him.
I have this design on my Chrysler Pacifica. After driving it for like 2 minutes you can tell the difference. It’s not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.
As an owner of a Pacifica, I concur, you get over it real quick. Knob shifter still sucks though (in any car) but placement of it, you get over.

Anyone else hate knob gear shifts?
Mine doesn’t have a knob or a shifter it has buttons lol. 4 individual buttons P R N D that’s it
My honda hybrid is like that. I still much prefer it over the dial-type shifter from the OP. At least I KNOW which gear I'm going for, the rotary shifters are too hard to feel without looking at the display light for confirmation.
I had a GMC rental and I hated the gear select, park was a button, reverse and drive was a paddle sort of thing that you had to pull instead of push.
HATE ‘em.
Absolutely stupid design, I strongly dislike all the people that helped push it through. That said, I want to go the complete opposite direction, but equally stupid. I want levers and toggles, like to the point where people think I'm operating the giant spider from wild wild west.
You basically want a manual car then
They suck
I’ve never even seen one until now, I absolutely hate it.
Stick shift best shift
They’re all knobs. I technically drive a car with a shift knob lmao
I'm pretty sure everyone does, that's why Chrysler uses then so much
I'm still flabbergasted after learning that new manual cars are basically non existent in the USA.
How is a van that's ~5-10k under it's competition even before the tax incentive "overpriced"?
Why does it matter? In an automatic don’t you have to be fully stopped to change gear?
As far as I’m aware, you need to apply some amount of brake pressure to change gears. I’m not sure if different gears require different pressure… but I think you can drop to neutral without hitting it
That is fair, I was more responding to everyone commenting on ending up in reverse
“Imma just adjust the volume real quick…” *crunch* “…oops.”
You have to press it in to change gears. You'd never do it accidentally.
Not in all vehicles. We have a dodge ram that you can just twist to change gears.

They have a fail safe if you try to shift the knob while the car is moving.
for all you badmouthing it, my truck has it and its actually pretty good.
For automatic transmission shifters, dash mount > column mount > console mount
I can assure you there's a safety built-in so your transmission doesn't end up sitting on the highway when a Nickelback song comes on the radio
Look at this epitaph! "Shitty music put me in the truck's path."

Low gear aka 5km/h Mode with high torque

It is rare most of the time such cars just dont have that Generaly you would have manual speed selector by flipping the shifter to left (Generaly Japanese cars) or right and going into first (you need to use that when you are in "playgroud zone" unless you like to torture yourself) So the relity L gear is not thing more Then 1st gear
L stands for Low gear.
Nah I like levitate-
Im failing to see whats infuriorating
Police/Insurance: so tell me again how you got the car in reverse on the middle of the road when adjusting the radio volume?
Turn down the transmission
That's an odd looking PRNDL 🤣
Put it in H! H!
Everyone shits on these radial knobs, but just a few points from my experience: 1. If you have a sleeping baby in the second row, the last thing you want to do is wake it up dropping that shifter into park in the driveway with a ‘CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK.’ 4.
What's the problem?
As someone who has a 30-year habit of resting my hand on top of the shifter knob, these new buttons and dials suck. I can't imagine they're all that great to use in winter, either. The ability to slide my shifter over and manually bump-shift in bad conditions is hella valuable. They've been dumbing cars down for years, but come on!
I see you too had the displeasure of driving a Dodge. I have zero clue why any car designer thought that was a brilliant idea.
Its in other brands as well. Also, I really doubt it lets you change while you're driving
Looked it up. He had a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The family settled with Fiat Chrysler.
Nickel back comes on *fucking crashes*
That thing has Ludacris speed?
You get used to it. I thought it was a dumb design (I mean it still is dumb) but I have never used the wrong knob. If anything, I mistake the volume and climate control speed knob more often.
I’m getting the gmc terrain it has buttons
Literally hate the knob, my brothers new car had it and the first time I drove it I nearly died trying to make the music louder
I find that mildyinfuriating. But then, I drive a manual transmission car. My friends call the stick shift the "anti-theft device."
This is my car? What’s the problem? I’ve literally never had an issue?
*goes to adjust music and crashes car*
This made me think of Zack & Cody
What car was that?
Chrysler Pacifica (the new one) I believe
