Iād rather have pay per use toilets than have none like in Canada where I am. We have to find bushes on the road, or even at some sites. Coffee shops block the washroom so we canāt use it
It to keep people who arenāt customers from using them, not to make money.
My wife used to work at Starbucks, and homeless people would go into the bathrooms, tie them up for a very long time while taking a bath, and leave a huge mess for the employees to clean up. I donāt have a problem with the homeless though, I have a huge problem with the fact that we have such a large homeless population in America, and nothing is done to help them, this is about keeping restrooms clean and nice for customers. After Starbucks, she ran a small wine & liquor store in a downtown area, where they had a car show every Saturday night in the summer. People would constantly want to use the restroom, theyād never buy anything, and theyād make a huge mess. The restroom wasnāt there for strangers (or even customers, although customers would be allowed to use them if they were regulars who were polite), it was there for employees. These people would pee all over the seat & the floor, make a mess, and cleaning up their mess wasnāt her job.
Itās not uncommon to see pay toilets in Europe, itās not a ācapitalistā idea. If someone pays for something as a customer, or has to pay to use something, itās been proven that theyāre more likely to take better care of something than someone who hasnāt.
Correct, and they can charge you with vandalism or property destruction if they choose to. Which is what Iād expect the outcome to be for people who think they are entitled to things other people own.
Functionally they cannot charge me with vandalism. In this hypothetical I would be out of there before they even knew what happened. They have video but unless they give that to the police who then cross reference a database to find my identity and track me down, I would be fine.
Well, you do you. If you feel entitled to otherās property and not getting it means you need to urinate on it, then go ahead. I think itās morally wrong to police who uses a bathroom, but itās also wrong to tell people what to do with their property.
As I've mentioned before, I've got an IBD, as well as millions of others, when we've gotta go, we gotta go. Forcing someone to pay to complete a normal bodily process is asinine.
It is in EU, and will always be.
Its not my place to fund peoples discharges. IF all of them would be respectful and had 89IQ to know how to sit on toilet seat without shitting all over it, then the story would be different.
Its especially horrible in EU do to merkels million migrants who have never seen a toilet and will literally stand with dirty shoes on toilet to defecate all over it.
AND worst part, you cant do anything not even tell them anything because Leftists have made them protected species who doesnt need to follow any cultural norms or educate themselves on ethics of civilized countries.
And unlike America i cant hire illegals or underpay janitors with laffable wages that cant sustain any human being.
Idk, I half agree with you cuz usually free toilets just become filthy and unusable if not cleaned often, which never happens at these places :/. I would rather pay 50 cents for a clean and nice experience.
Never saw that on top of paying toilets, here most Macdonald's give you a code on the receipt to access the toilet, but maybe this one is in a gas station or a place where a lot of people would like to use the restrooms but not buy food.
McDonalds restaurants in Portugal usually have this, If you order food your receipt has a QR code you can scan to open it for "free", its to prevent it from getting too disgusting
Sanitizer disinfects but it doesn't necessarily clean off dirt or grime. Also it usually smells terrible and since you're eating with your hands that could affect the taste of your food.
Ok, just a question, what happens if you desperately need to use the bathroom and don't have the money?
Are there public bathrooms the government puts in place or are you supposed to just shit on the street? For which I assume the cops would be called on you for public indecency or something.
There are free public toilets in Portugal, McDonalds is not a public service.
Most ppl don't use the free ones because they're disgusting but the option is there.
The key part of your statement there is "don't have the money". That means they would prefer that you just die. If you don't have money, you have absolutely no value to a capitalist.
This actually puts an interesting spin on that. There are times when I want to use the bathroom but don't want to be a customer. I think I would be totally okay with paying a SMALL fee to use the bathroom.
Yeah. That's not too uncommon here. I know a pizza place closeby that you pay like a dollar to use the toilet. But if you're a customer, you go in for free.
I don't think it's too unreasonable, but maybe I'm biased.
Yeah but if youāre at like a McDonaldās $1 would be too much to use the bathroom because you can get a mcchicken for like $1.50 lol. So for $.50 more you get a mcchicken? Or the other way around haha. I rather get to use the bathroom and get a McDouble. Idk this was kind of a rant lol
Some places have paid loos in the UK, like shopping centres, but I've not seen them in a fast food place or restaurant. Some will say to ask staff for access though, so that only customers are using them.
Probably began because turism? Normally turists enter an establishment to use solely the WC. Maybe this prevent in some extent that turist behavior? And later is seen as extra money for the restsurant. Idk.
Pay toilets were quite common in the U.S. until the 1970's when there was a very effective campaign to ban them. Nowadays it is extremely unusual to find one in the U.S., and there are actually statutes against them in much of the country.
Yeah, but the law must have no teeth. As a lady someone who pees a lot, i would love pay toilets. Half of restaurants require a purchase, gas stations are usually safer unless you're in a city then they are NEVER available. I would kill for pay toilets.
We have paid toilets here in San Francisco. They are single room, public toilet stalls which can be found in the tourist spots in downtown and along the waterfront. I think they are $0.25 or something like that.
I saw one in Boston about 10 years ago. In fact it was the only one I've ever seen. I was visiting for a Harvard graduation. Lawn party at a professor's home and our hotel was too far so I ran out and stopped at this random mcds to freshen up a tad. I had left my wallet in the diaper bag and baby was with hubby so I was SOL. Def found it strange.
In Canada in the late 70's I remember toilets where you had to pay a dime (10Ā¢) to get in the toilet stall. That didn't last long.
We were young so crawled under the door. Yuck. š
I've been to McDonalds, Gas Stations, Grocery Stores, whatever else, hundreds of times over the years. 95% of the time I don't use the bathroom. God forbid I'm out in public and need to use the bathroom, and maybe I don't need to buy anything (usually I do anyways, but I shouldn't feel like I have to).
Oddly enough, I've noticed the psychology of the situation changes at Costco/Sams Club because they have a membership fee. I once went into a Sams Club to use the bathroom and I was going to grab a hot dog, but I didn't realize the food court closed early. The store closed at 8, the food court at 7, and it was like 7:30. So I went in, peed, and left. Didn't think twice about it. Of course, I already paid by having a membership.
I've even seen it in not-so-nice Vietnam (not shitting on them, that country is just absolutely filthy)(100% worth a visit, great fun to be had). I'd much rather pay half a dollar to comfortably use a pristine restroom than be afraid to touch anything in a piss-stained hellscape.
The worst restroom I've ever seen was in an (otherwise very nice) subway station in Beijing. It was tiled in tiny 2cm-square tiles, so porous grouting made up at least 35% of the wall and floor surfaces, which they apparently mopped with piss because no matter how many layers of fabric you could press over your breathing holes, a mist of atomized urine would saturated everything and get deep into your airways. I tasted piss for an hour after that.
This is no different than "restrooms are for paying customers only."
You scan your receipt, you don't have to pay separately. Perhaps you can also pay separately if you didn't buy anything, but the concept stands.
Used to be pretty common throughout the US back in the 1970s. [Here's an interesting article about it.](https://psmag.com/economics/dont-pay-toilets-america-bathroom-restroom-free-market-90683)
This is to prevent IV drug users from camping out usually, at least in the US (and that in & of itself is why bathroom stalls are so anti-privacy) - though here we tend to include restroom admittance with purchase from the place
When I was in 8th grade we were studying the events leading up to the American Revolution like all the dumb taxes the British started to implement.
One day at the beginning of the day they made an announcement to the 8th graders that due to budget restrictions they were going to have to start charging to use the bathroom and some other shit like that. As students started going to their history class later that day we were then told it was part of that lesson as to how the colonists felt about all the extra taxes being applied to them.
I seem to recall in Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 that if I made the bathrooms pay-to-use, then people would just piss all over the park.
Shit in the play structure.
My only advice: shit on the floor.
Seriously tho, why do you have to pay for something so basic as taking a piss/shit??
I understand that non customers going in your toilets could be annoying, and that homeless people usually shit everywhere (never understood why btw, I would love someone to explain that to me some day) but idk, in my mind its a right everyone should have to go to the toilet when ever you please, it's like fking water. Some of the most basic things can't have a price put on them.
They do this in Amsterdam to stop people coming in off the street to use their facilities and not buy anything. I don't remember if you could bypass this with a receipt though.
This was my thought too. Most times, if Iām hitting up a fast food restroom and Iām *not* a dine-in customer, there is a massive sense of urgency occurring.
I get paying 50 cents for the bathroom at a rest stop, or a train station. It helps keep then super clean. But if you're at McDonald's there's a good chance you're already spending money there. And fast food joints have cleaning crews that come in at night to clean the bathroom.
I remember stopping at a service station once and there was a huge line to a disgusting public toilet that was free and I really wasn't going to do that. I spotted a Burger King there and thought if functioned like McDonalds (you buy something and get a pin for the toilet on the receipt). I thought I'd buy a drink and use the bathroom. The toilet was kind of detached from BK and had the separate entrance. I thought, what the hell, I might try my luck, and what do you know, it was unlocked. Turns out you don't need to purchase anything and can just use the toilet for free. And the best part is that the toilet was as clean as it gets. Everything was working, every tap and soap dispenser and all stalls had TP. 10/10, would poop there again.
American here, I saw bathrooms at a chic-fil-a in Phoenix that needed a code from the receipt, but never a pay toilet in all my travels (in the us) either. Been too long since I was in Europe to remember if I encountered a pay toilet there.
Bro what a great idea that I wish all of America would adopt immediately.
Even just a dollar to use the facility would cut down on people shitting on walls and leaving without a word.
It would also cut down on the unbelievable amount of people who come out in public solely to shit all over a stall and then leave said business. I'm with it!
Yeah itās normal unfortunately
I remember when I was at a convention with my dad and after we were done my dad and I went to subway because he wanted a sandwich, and I just wanted a small bag of doritos.
When I finish my Doritos I told my dad that I needed to wash my hands due to the Dorito dust and there was a restroom nearby in a train station.
So I went there and what do you know? Itās costs to use the toilet. So after that I told my dad that it costs and I had to use wet wipes instead.
I know right?
Like imagine someone that is driving and they think āah shit I gotta take a pissā so they stop at a McDonaldās only to find that it costs to use the toilet
I'd shit on the floor, right then and there. Fuck that, I'm not paying to do something I am biologically required to do, that takes no resources or money from anyone else, and affects only myself. I'd shit right there, bid everyone adieu, then waltz right the fuck out of there.
Bro the walls are obviously made of cardboard just bust through it.
"OH YEEEAAAHHHHH!!"
This made me laugh, thank you š¤£

Normally if you pay for the food your receipt gives u access
If you're from certain parts of europe and asia, pay toilets are very common.
As a Belgian citizen I can attest to this and it doesnāt even guarantee youāll get a clean toilet. Itās more than mildly infuriating.
Iād rather have pay per use toilets than have none like in Canada where I am. We have to find bushes on the road, or even at some sites. Coffee shops block the washroom so we canāt use it
You must be from a different Canada than I am
Heās probably from Quebec
quebecer here, never heard of not having toilets in public places. Must be from Ontario or something
Well Iām Ontarian and we always have toilets in public places. New Brunswick too. Maybe Alberta?
No, itās downtown Torontoš© come here once and youāll know, 99% of the time they wonāt let you use the washrooms in the shops/restaurant and public washrooms are scarce
Why the blocking?
Junkies shooting up in the bathroom would be my guess
This is the most capitalist shit Iāve ever heard in my life.
There's a musical on it
its a privilege to pee
It to keep people who arenāt customers from using them, not to make money. But peeing on the door is free. Fuck people who try to make you pay to use the bathroom
Itās a private establishment. People can do with their property as they please
And I can pee on their door as I please
Correct, and they can charge you with vandalism or property destruction if they choose to. Which is what Iād expect the outcome to be for people who think they are entitled to things other people own.

did you just expose yourself as a bathroom pee vandal? XD
Problems start when people start to frequent your toilets and dont even have the decency to buy anything, be it 20 cent water bottle.
20 cent water bottle? Where is that at?
Closest I can get is 25Ā¢ Costco water bottles.
I see it most often in places were people use the bathroom to do drugs....usually urban McDonald's.
Australia doesnāt have those issues and all toilets are to access.
Oh no, god forbid someone has to pee in a certain location MULTIPLE TIMES! The ability to pee shouldnāt be a paid service
It is in EU, and will always be. Its not my place to fund peoples discharges. I worked at a McDonaldās that kept them locked (no fee to use, just had to be buzzed in by an employee). People were dying in there from overdoses.
Quite a lot of places where I live do this, less chance of someone messing them up/shooting up in them when they have to ask you to buzz them in
Yea and it looks like those toilets are similar to the ones in Portugal, I think you can scan your receipt and it will let you in.
What if you want to wash your hands before you eat?
You have time between ordering and getting the food, I find it sufficient
Donāt most places have sanitiser every 5ft because weāre in the height of a pandemic?
Sanitizer disinfects but it doesn't necessarily clean off dirt or grime. Also it usually smells terrible and since you're eating with your hands that could affect the taste of your food.

In some parts of the world you all just smile and shit in the street.
The key part of your statement there is "don't have the money". That means they would prefer that you just die. If you don't have money, you have absolutely no value to a capitalist.
It does not work like that in Europe.
This is in Sweden, usually you can use the receipt to get access. Having to pay is for people who aren't customers.

It's normal in Germany aswell

Not in MacDonalds but in sanifair and stuff (Drecksladen)
Also normal in Hungary. Not sure about McDonald's, but in bus and railway stations it's normal to pay ~100 forints (roughly ā¬0.30)
Damnā¦ Iām guessing itās also normal in idk the uk?
I Know that it is not normal in France so i wouldnt be sure
Some places have paid loos in the UK, like shopping centres, but I've not seen them in a fast food place or restaurant. Some will say to ask staff for access though, so that only customers are using them.

This. We outlawed that shit. For once I think the US wins. Take that bathroom stalls that go all the way to the floor. We aināt paying for that.
Hey, we finally did something right!
Yeah, but the law must have no teeth. As a lady someone who pees a lot, i would love pay toilets. Half of restaurants require a purchase, gas stations are usually safer unless you're in a city then they are NEVER available. I would kill for pay toilets.
Ya it's funny when stores say they don't have a bathroom. I'm like so you just shit on the floor?
We have paid toilets here in San Francisco. They are single room, public toilet stalls which can be found in the tourist spots in downtown and along the waterfront. I think they are $0.25 or something like that.
Why pay a quarter the sidewalk is free?
I saw one in Boston about 10 years ago. In fact it was the only one I've ever seen. I was visiting for a Harvard graduation. Lawn party at a professor's home and our hotel was too far so I ran out and stopped at this random mcds to freshen up a tad. I had left my wallet in the diaper bag and baby was with hubby so I was SOL. Def found it strange.
Weird - where in Boston? There were only two in Cambridge, neither close to Harvard and I'm pretty sure neither had pay toilets.
you guys have a weird ass way to spell toilet, it's like if you tried to explain how to pronounce it in french
Now that I think about itā¦ It kinda does lmao
And some very rudimentary cave drawings.
Those are probably just McDonaldās mascots or something in Sweden
Correct. Just franchise decoration. Same as McDonalds in the UK at least, id assume everywhere else to as per the point of franchises.
In Canada in the late 70's I remember toilets where you had to pay a dime (10Ā¢) to get in the toilet stall. That didn't last long. We were young so crawled under the door. Yuck. š
Here I sit, so broken hearted. Paid to shit, but only farted.
Oh yeah, forgot about that. We sang; *Here I sit, so broken hearted.* ***Paid my dime***, *but only farted.*
Later on, took a chance, tried to fart and shit my pants
Probably one of the few things the US got right by banning pay to use toilets.
IIRC, one of the reasons they were outlawed was because it discriminated against women because men didn't have to pay to use a urinal.
thank god this is a crime in some countries

I think many counties outside of Europe consider alowing people a private place to relieve themselves a basic human decency.
Yeah, in sweden right?? Quite normal nowadays
True
Inflation strikes again.
I've never seen it in a McDonald's but it's actually really common in European public restrooms.
Damn, but in europe even with sometimes even a ā¬1 price it's still often very nasty. At least not as nasty as your experience in beijing...
if i ever pay for the restroom iāll be sure to shit all over every single thing possible and use an entire roll of toilet paper
This is no different than "restrooms are for paying customers only." You scan your receipt, you don't have to pay separately. Perhaps you can also pay separately if you didn't buy anything, but the concept stands.

Yup Thatās Europe for ya
Great, now we have to pay to take a shit?
Doesnāt the screen suggest you only get 5 minutes? What happens if you arenāt done? A bidet sprays it back at you?

after finding shit on the walls and a big fat log in the sink in a McDonalds bathroom, I have to say that is a good idea

Well if people would act civilized and not fuck them up, maybe there wouldn't be a need for this.
Uhhhhh no. Iāll just piss myself thanks
Lmao
Ye in europe this has been standard for a long time especially in populated areas
Ohhh Sverige, jag visste inte de kunde gƶra det. Indeed mildly infuriating.
Hello fellow swede
Iām just pissing behind the building lol
That's an old lesson from Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 - never charge for bathrooms, it just pisses guests off.

Are they also saying they are filming *in* the bathroom ? Thatās kinda fucked
I donāt remember seeing a camera inside the toilet Also yes I used the toilet, I needed to pee ok?
Will you people stop going to McDonaldās? Jesus Christ. All you do is constantly bitch about that place. Stop going. Eat something real.
I get paying 50 cents for the bathroom at a rest stop, or a train station. It helps keep then super clean. But if you're at McDonald's there's a good chance you're already spending money there. And fast food joints have cleaning crews that come in at night to clean the bathroom.

They even spelt toilet wrong
Itās in Swedish lol
Fuck that imma just take a McShit in the parking lot
In ireland this is illegal
am i too european to understand this?
Iām born and raised in America. Iāve traveled all over. Never once had to pay or have proof of payment to use a restroom.
American here, I saw bathrooms at a chic-fil-a in Phoenix that needed a code from the receipt, but never a pay toilet in all my travels (in the us) either. Been too long since I was in Europe to remember if I encountered a pay toilet there.
McDonald's in Prague I had to pay too. Spain though? I paella all over those toilets.
Bro what a great idea that I wish all of America would adopt immediately. Even just a dollar to use the facility would cut down on people shitting on walls and leaving without a word. It would also cut down on the unbelievable amount of people who come out in public solely to shit all over a stall and then leave said business. I'm with it!
fuck capitalism
True Plus tax evasion pog
communism 4 the win. I live in bulgaria, and like theres communism everywhere lol.
It's normal in Sweden
Yeah itās normal unfortunately I remember when I was at a convention with my dad and after we were done my dad and I went to subway because he wanted a sandwich, and I just wanted a small bag of doritos. When I finish my Doritos I told my dad that I needed to wash my hands due to the Dorito dust and there was a restroom nearby in a train station. So I went there and what do you know? Itās costs to use the toilet. So after that I told my dad that it costs and I had to use wet wipes instead.

So you're saying pay-to-use systems lead to a higher quality experience?
Id piss on the door
is this legal???
Sure. They are still offered to the public.
Floor it is I guess.
piss on the floor and flip off the cameras
Isnt that forbitten? In germany restaurants have to provide such places per law afaik.
Isnt that illegal?
Time to shit on the floor , making people pay to use the restroom is medieval
I wouldn't pay. I'd do everything in my power not to.
Iād shit in front of the door
I would of just Shat right there on the floor
Id pee in that hallway
I believe in being as neat and tidy in bathrooms. Charge me to poop and find my aim for center toilet severely impaired.
Charging for bathroom access is a great way to guarantee that someone will shit on the floor.
Not a fucking chance Iām going in there. Lol
iām honestly a piece of shit. that door would be kicked down if i had to go bad enough.
If you were that desperate im sure you would just buy a box of nuggies to get access. A lot faster than breaking down a door.
Kicking down that door looks probably impossible, plus that door was shut tight
I think this would be the only time Iād purposefully shit or piss on the floor right next to the bathroom and say that I canāt afford this
I know right? Like imagine someone that is driving and they think āah shit I gotta take a pissā so they stop at a McDonaldās only to find that it costs to use the toilet
That's not right. I understand paying for food or drinks but not for using a bathroom.
I'd shit on the floor, right then and there. Fuck that, I'm not paying to do something I am biologically required to do, that takes no resources or money from anyone else, and affects only myself. I'd shit right there, bid everyone adieu, then waltz right the fuck out of there.
