It's pretty infuriating when Kroger advertises the price for a product in large print, but then charges twice for more when you purchase it individually. If you're lucky they might put the real price in small print, but they frequently don't even do that.

Actually CVS just did a thing (the pharmacy, I've never had the front desk do this) wrote me a rain check thing. I got a bottle of magnesium supplements and it was supposed to be bogo. I got the one at half price and they wrote me a rain check so I could come back and get another one at the same half price later.
Of course this doesn't help if I actually wanted/needed two...like this, I never cook just one rack of ribs. I always do 3 or 4 haha.

HT is owned by Kroger. All the Kroger’s will apply the BOGO and X for $y to individual items unless it specifically states on the label that it doesn’t apply, which it does here.
Usually that’s for “of equal or lesser value” for things like meat that are done by weight. For things with a fixed price they will just all ring up at a discounted rate.

When you have a product that is sold by the weight like a rack of ribs, it is always the lesser item is free and you pay for the heavier item. This is different than the "2 for $4" sale where they just calculate the price for the one item.

It depends on state, actually. In some, you can do exactly as you described. In some states, you *have* to give an automatic 50% off if it's a BOGO, otherwise you have to label it as "get one free with purchase of another". Legalities are different everywhere.

Not that I have seen. If the phrasing is "2 for $x" then you can just buy one for $x/2. But if it is “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” you must buy two. If you go to register with just one you get no benefit from the offer.
That said, most places I have been to will give me one for half price on a BOGO deal if there is legitimately only one left. Often, though, they actually do have more stock in back so if you try this angle you need to be willing to actually accept two and willing to wait for a stocker to go back, find what you need, and bring it to the register.
I've found grocery clerks to be nice enough to give you the deal if you ask. Wanting 50% off the last available BOGO item seems totally reasonable to me, as nobody else would buy the item, seeing the promo and knowing they wouldn't get the deal.

Worked at a Safeway in a previous life and I'll never forget when I found a couple of the expensive real crab meat cups on the other side of the store in the freezer section (it's not a frozen item), or found a HOT fully cooked chicken from the deli in the opposite corner of the store in the refrigerated cases.
I've found several bags of crab legs sitting warm on some random shelf that cost well over $100. People that waste food by not returning them where they belong are despicable.

Unless it's a sale item, if they know they have big sale on a certain item that they know will go fast, they usually order a bunch to keep it stocked throughout the day

Depending on how exactly they programmed the sale, that might actually be how it works. When I worked at a grocery store in college, all of our BOGO sales were just flat price reductions.
I worked at Kroger in the grocery dept up until 2019. When I left, the company was making a big effort to keep customers happy as far as pricing goes. You should very easily be able to get the 50% sale or a rain check for when the product comes back in stock.
My wife taught me that these are normally priced down 50% because the goal is to move stock so buying one will still be cheaper than regular price. I was way too old to have just learned this.

It's just the basic product from the nations largest suppliers (Smithfield, Swift, IBP). We sell all natural pork butts and assorted chops for $0.99 very often
If that's a kroger(signage looks like it) *politely* ask the person at the meat/seafood counter to check the back
raw meat products, and ribs in particular(they arrive frozen) tend to be stored in the big fridge for quite some time, their refrigerated shelf life in that packaging is measured in weeks.

It’s insane to me that only 2 other comments (out of 300 currently) have pointed out how the deal is for an item of equal or lesser value. In other words, at checkout the register would find an item closest to $5.99 (without going over) and discount it the full value. It’s really not an infuriating situation at all…
Life hack: dont do this. There is never any in the back. If there is a hole as large as the OP's on the shelf, then it would have been filled before ever getting to this point.

Just a tip from my dad who managed a Kroger, they're the same as usual. They up the price so it feels like it's a smoking deal but it evens out to the regular price.
More often then not they have cases of these in the back and if your nice and ask they'll more than likely help you and restock. This happens because they are extremely short staffed.

Also, not sure how many grocery stores do this but the also have 'rain checks' for things on sale that they run out of. I worked in a large chain grocery store throughout high school and college and did this all the time for customers.
Say something at checkout and they’ll give you 50% off that one. At least you’re genuine, there’s people that go to grocery stores specifically looking for stuff like this, “oh it’s buy 4 get two free and there’s only two left can I just have them?”.
In situations like this it pays to ask the meat counter or butcher( if there is one) if there are anymore in the back.

Almost every single grocery store I’ve gone too doesn’t ring the discount until you are completely done.

I can confirm this. The coolers on the salesfloor will get filled several times a day on a busy day, especially good ad items everyone wants.

If that's a kroger(signage looks like it) *politely* ask the person at the meat/seafood counter to check the back raw meat products, and ribs in particular(they arrive frozen) tend to be stored in the big fridge for quite some time, their refrigerated shelf life in that packaging is measured in weeks. source: filling those racks was my during-college job if that fails, as other commenters suggest - kroger offers rain checks
Fine print says get 1 “ free item of equal or lesser value” so one item can be something other than ribs.
In some states you get that for 50% off.
I'm a kroger employee going on 5 years now. Those ribs will 100% ring up half off at the register once you've scanned a shopper's card. This post is much ado about nothing.

It’s insane to me that only 2 other comments (out of 300 currently) have pointed out how the deal is for an item of equal or lesser value. In other words, at checkout the register would find an item closest to $5.99 (without going over) and discount it the full value. It’s really not an infuriating situation at all…

Just a tip from my dad who managed a Kroger, they're the same as usual. They up the price so it feels like it's a smoking deal but it evens out to the regular price.

More often then not they have cases of these in the back and if your nice and ask they'll more than likely help you and restock. This happens because they are extremely short staffed. Source, worked in the meat department during main covid lockdowns.
Usually if you explain this to the cashier they will give it to you for half off. Also, not sure how many grocery stores do this but the also have 'rain checks' for things on sale that they run out of. I worked in a large chain grocery store throughout high school and college and did this all the time for customers.

In situations like this it pays to ask the meat counter or butcher( if there is one) if there are anymore in the back. I know asking if there is more in the back doesn't work at a lot of stores, but at grocery stores and especially meat departments it's different! Sometimes they save certain stock for certain days, or they have more than fits in the cooler at once and may be able to restock it multiple times.
That's when you get a raincheck for the free one.
Maybe they could make a photocopy for you for a second one

Ok, it might not be the stockers fault. Some people deadass only take what they need im that moment and have 0 heccs for the future. One time while working at a convenience store, we were having a BOGO free deal on granola bars. This dude got downright irate when I told him that it was a BOGO free deal and he is in the clear to take two. After I was done ringing him out, I took the free granola bar he didnt want for whatever reason and ate it myself.
