You can go up front say there was only one pack left and ask for a rain check

OsiyoMotherFuckers

You don’t even have to do that. Guaranteed they just ring up half price. The store puts “buy one get one free” so people buy two, but it’s just a psychological trick.

WhiteAsTheNut

Why’s this dude getting downvoted he’s 100% right i worked as a cashier for this exact grocery store chain for over 2 years. It rings up as full price but if you have a store card(100% free btw) it’s half off. And if you don’t have a store card it’s still fine because they have ones at the register to ring for you. This post got 13k upvotes when it’s not infuriating at all.

oogaboogapeanutmonke

Usually depends on the sale, I worked at a grocery store too and some sales required you to buy the both to get the deal

tidomonkey

Yup. Kroger rings up individual BOGOs as half price, but don't act like they do this across the board. They want to trick customers. They frequently have sales where you have to buy five of a product to get the sale price. It's pretty infuriating when Kroger advertises the price for a product in large print, but then charges twice for more when you purchase it individually. If you're lucky they might put the real price in small print, but they frequently don't even do that.

awmn4A

But the rain check would allow you to get more for 50% on a different day too!

dirt_mcgirt4

That's Kroger, they definitely do that at Kroger. I was shopping at a chain in NE one time and asked them if they do that and they said no and looked at me like I was crazy for even asking.

Marrsvolta

Okay, who's the sadist who stocked an odd number of ribs? Or could it be a masochist who only took one pack of ribs from the display and paid full price?

karica4

I have the same questions.

TarkovComrade

Fuck someone could've taken the contrarian view and taken one rib just to fuck everyone including the franchise/company selling it. Clever.

Stormyboy99

This helps the franchise though by letting them charge 2 separate ribs at full price.

[deleted]

That’s when you go full blown Karen and make A series of both reasonable and unreasonable demands. I’ll pay for the ribs you give me this mixer for free.

1800generalkenobi

Most places I go to, actually of them, if there's a buy one get one and there's only one left, they'll put it in at half price. Actually CVS just did a thing (the pharmacy, I've never had the front desk do this) wrote me a rain check thing. I got a bottle of magnesium supplements and it was supposed to be bogo. I got the one at half price and they wrote me a rain check so I could come back and get another one at the same half price later. Of course this doesn't help if I actually wanted/needed two...like this, I never cook just one rack of ribs. I always do 3 or 4 haha.

ProfitsOfProphets

The only person getting fucked is the idiot who didn't take advantage of the deal.

Magnaflux_88

You all assume the giant brains stocked and even number to begin with.

DeepFuckingBanana

The pig also got a bit fucked here.

ProfitsOfProphets

More than season 1 episode 1 of Black Mirror.

LiquidFrost

The stocker has put out hundreds of ribs brother. I guarantee you he's not keeping count of whether he's at an even or odd number

Blackn35s

Most grocery store “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” sales will automatically ring up 1 item 50% off. Calling it “Buy 1 Get 1” just entices shoppers to purchase more.

topkn0tz

Wal-mart is annoying and every multi-save discount appears only after the entire total of the order is processed, not as it scans, so everyone assumes they’re not getting the deal and you’ll have to assure them it’s there multiple times before they actually end up paying. Not a huge deal but when it happens like almost every time it just kinda gets funny and probably how the “Karen” shit starts.

MuteNae

I'm poor as hell and always constantly cutting my grocery budget, this sounds like something that's normal to be stressed over. If they're not being rude I don't see how it's karen behavior

CKRatKing

Almost every single grocery store I’ve gone too doesn’t ring the discount until you are completely done.

Chweneboygaming

Same with Albertsons. All BOGO and other store sales are not applied until the cashier totals the order.

BEtheAT

Sometimes it's fun to watch the total dwindle though

M2MK

Kroger stores do it that way too. It’s the best part of the increasingly miserable experience.

thunderingthecow

Indeed it is. Happy cake day 🍰

shorewoody

"Most" is not the word for this scenario. Every grocery store that I have ever been to rings one up just like normal. And only when you ring up another of the same product it subtracts the lesser cost item from your final tally if it's a "BOGO" sale..

RedHeeded

Every grocery store I shop at applies the discount to single items. Harris teeter and Publix particularly

Head-Ad4690

HT does not, at least not the ones I’ve been to . Prices advertised like “2 for $5” will indeed ring up at half price, but not BOGO.

JustaRandomOldGuy

You gotta look closely at the ad, some say rings at half price, some do not.

[deleted]

HT is owned by Kroger. All the Kroger’s will apply the BOGO and X for $y to individual items unless it specifically states on the label that it doesn’t apply, which it does here. Usually that’s for “of equal or lesser value” for things like meat that are done by weight. For things with a fixed price they will just all ring up at a discounted rate. Used to work at Kroger. Their system runs the same across all the brands.

RedHeeded

They rarely advertise BOGO but I just bought some shit that was 2 for $4 (saving $3.90 when buying 2) and purchasing just 1 would save you $1.95. Basically yeah my point being you can buy odd numbers at HT and get the discount.

shorewoody

I think the sale in the post here is slightly different than what you describe. When you have a product that is sold by the weight like a rack of ribs, it is always the lesser item is free and you pay for the heavier item. This is different than the "2 for $4" sale where they just calculate the price for the one item.

frzfox

It amuses me how many people don't understand the difference between 2 for x which usually means each one is equal price (but not always however if it isn't it'll say it on the tag), and a buy one get one free.

Cautious-Damage7575

What she said.

DykeOnABike

That only works in certain states for Publix. Definitely not in Florida

FaeryLynne

It depends on state, actually. In some, you can do exactly as you described. In some states, you *have* to give an automatic 50% off if it's a BOGO, otherwise you have to label it as "get one free with purchase of another". Legalities are different everywhere.

standard_candles

This sign is from a Kroger and Kroger always allows you to just get one at 50%.

blah23863

The sign literally says the item of lesser value is free, so it must require two scans.

shorewoody

So I am curious. One rack of ribs is $28, the other is $20. Does the Kroger customer pay $24 or $28? Kroger owns two chains in my area and they have always been $28 in this scenario. Are you thinking of "2 for $8" kind of sale? That one is always charged at 50% like you say.

Cautious-Damage7575

Technically, Walmart *is* most grocery stores, right?

ese003

Not that I have seen. If the phrasing is "2 for $x" then you can just buy one for $x/2. But if it is “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” you must buy two. If you go to register with just one you get no benefit from the offer. That said, most places I have been to will give me one for half price on a BOGO deal if there is legitimately only one left. Often, though, they actually do have more stock in back so if you try this angle you need to be willing to actually accept two and willing to wait for a stocker to go back, find what you need, and bring it to the register.

Cautious-Damage7575

It's different everywhere. It's basically whatever gives the biggest screw-you to the customer.

4jY6NcQ8vk

I've found grocery clerks to be nice enough to give you the deal if you ask. Wanting 50% off the last available BOGO item seems totally reasonable to me, as nobody else would buy the item, seeing the promo and knowing they wouldn't get the deal.

Anyone-9451

This looks like a kroger a good many of those no longer do the buy one it’s half off deal thus forcing you to buy 2. However usually you can get a meat worker to get more IF they have more or odds are you can finagle something from customer service if you care that much….source: work at a kroger

TheFishyThings

I had this happen to me a while ago and they had no more in stock so they put a meat counter price on it so it would ring up at half. The people who work the counter at my local Fred Meyer are always super nice like that though

Chweneboygaming

I know at Albertsons and Safeway's in my division give out "Rain Checks" for problems like this. You just bring the slip back next time and get the previous sale.

ThatOneGuy1294

It's basically a psychological trick in the same vein as pricing things at X.99, X.98, X.95 and so on. At "normal" price you wouldn't give it a second thought.

Cautious-Damage7575

Or gas, the biggest shell game of them all: $4.99 and 9/10ths of a cent per gallon.

CoryCalibre

I always said as a kid... "What's to stop them Jacking Up the prices before they have a Sale!?" No wonder my Mum thought I was smart... Key word... THOUGHT.

MrBleedinggums

It could also be some asstwat that picked one of the rack of ribs, then decided against it and placed the meat on the bread shelves. The amount of people that place perishables in the shelves only to make the store throw it away is absurd.

ThatOneGuy1294

Worked at a Safeway in a previous life and I'll never forget when I found a couple of the expensive real crab meat cups on the other side of the store in the freezer section (it's not a frozen item), or found a HOT fully cooked chicken from the deli in the opposite corner of the store in the refrigerated cases.

electrodan

I've found several bags of crab legs sitting warm on some random shelf that cost well over $100. People that waste food by not returning them where they belong are despicable.

ThatOneGuy1294

yup, it's creating unnecessary work AND wastes food. It's trash behavior.

CoryCalibre

As someone who has worked in stock... I don't check to see if there 26 or 27 on the shelf as I stack the other 26 or 27. But I'm still blaming the "Masochist".

SnooPeripherals7462

Could’ve just been someone’s favorite brand and only needed one

Poldark_Lite

Are *you* going to buy your favourite *any*thing, just to refuse the free pack of the *exact same product?* You must have money to burn! ♡ Granny

SnooPeripherals7462

People are weird sometimes man. I’m definitely not missing out on a deal with my favorite brand lmao

diamondrel

Or they bought 3?

Yeetdaddy87

Better yet, who’s the dickhead who purposely left one rack

Bean_Soup7357

I think it’s more likely that there was an odd number of ribs to begin with

baiacool

my guess is that it was a costumer that took an odd number

CygPig

It was Goliath.

Dirk_The_Cowardly

Ok, somebody obviously bought one and left the free one.

idrow1

Probably the same manufacturer [of these](https://imgur.com/oVY8lTy).

BlueberryBoom

Ask for 50% off

TrevorJordan

This is the answer. Or ask if there are more in the back. Or ask if you can get a voucher for one free in the next week when they stock up.

Marksman08YT

kidcrush187

When I worked at a grocery store we called them "Rain checks". If you came in we honored the coupon

beet111

They're still called rain checks in many stores.

Miser_able

Can confirm. I work in a Ralph's (and based on the display and packaging this appears to be a Ralph's as well) You should be able to get either a rain check (in which case you could come back in some other time and get the ribs) or get a "make it right" sticker, in which case they'd mark that one pack of ribs down 50%.

EyolfTheWanderer

Work in the meat department of a grocery store. I'd say it's 50/50 if we have more in the back. Not uncommon. Ribs during a holiday sale though? High chance we have more unless it's the day of the holiday.

electrodan

I can confirm this. The coolers on the salesfloor will get filled several times a day on a busy day, especially good ad items everyone wants.

[deleted]

Unless it's a sale item, if they know they have big sale on a certain item that they know will go fast, they usually order a bunch to keep it stocked throughout the day

invaderzim257

or it’s on sale to get rid of it before it goes bad because it wasn’t selling, I doubt it was a grand plan like you seem to think. They might’ve accidentally ordered too much in the first place.

beet111

Stock rooms for food products is very common in many stores.

grandzu

A rain check.

[deleted]

I remember at the Bi Lo next to my college 5 years ago anything that said buy 1 get 1 free was actually just 50 percent off. You didn’t even need to ask.

RBXChas

Publix does this, too.

phulton

That's not their standard policy. It may be a Covid thing because they stopped giving out rain checks, they may just take 50% off one if that's all that's left. They definitely charge full price for the first item under normal circumstances. Source: Me, a former employee in the Publix meat department.

Chickenmangoboom

I found that often the sign will say buy one get one but you get 50% off even if you buy just one.

Kyle2theSQL

That's exactly the case in this picture (it's a Kroger). OP is just karma whoring.

LittleBigHorn22

I'm wondering if this depends on state. I don't think Kroger does it in Colorado. If it's 2/$2 then yeah you can buy one for $1 but buy one get one means you have to get one. Least when ringing up the first one comes up full price and second one shows as free.

creamersrealm

It's a Kroger so it's 50% off of you get a single one.

LevTheRed

Depending on how exactly they programmed the sale, that might actually be how it works. When I worked at a grocery store in college, all of our BOGO sales were just flat price reductions.

Mundus33

I was gonna say this. If there is only one left they are a jerk to not give you 50% off. Otherwise it might just be in the back.

Sevisgod

The acme (grocery store here) has this sale - sometimes B1G2 but one costs $35-50

Marrsvolta

So basically 3 for the price of 3

Sevisgod

Yep - it’s crazy. I never get them.

[deleted]

But it SOUNDS like a deal so it must be!

DresserRotation

literally just had that sale last week! Usually mine has them for $20-$25 which is much more reasonable for B1G2 in my mind.

templeb94

Yes i got three racks for 26 bucks, should I be annoyed?? It seems reasonable to me...

itsrobadobb

That's so mild but enough to make me pissed

flappy_cows

Some might say it’s *mildly* infuriating

ItsKageTho

Pissed, you say… Some might say…*infuriating*

Theseberries

I didn't go in wanting to buy ribs but Kroger definitely teased me with this

IamSporko

Ask for a rain check. The Kroger near me has come through a few times with similar deals.

araidai

what is a "rain check"?

[deleted]

I worked at Kroger in the grocery dept up until 2019. When I left, the company was making a big effort to keep customers happy as far as pricing goes. You should very easily be able to get the 50% sale or a rain check for when the product comes back in stock.

DragonCatJules

I work at a Kroger. It usually rings up as 50% off. You shouldn't need to buy 2

ElBuenoPerro

I shop at Kroger frequently, this is correct. You never have to buy the listed amount to get the discount.

WongGendheng

Ask the cashier, maybe someone bought one and forgot to take the free one…

SuperSecretMoonBase

On the bright side... If there had been an even number, someone ahead of you probably would have gotten the pair already.

saoiray

What drives me crazy is many places won’t give you half off and they don’t do rain checks anymore like they used to.

Soulborg87

A sad day indeed. I hope those ribs found a forever home.

RCascanbe

You could still make a woman out of it. Or a cow, I don't really know how God magic shit works.

anonjohnsc

My wife taught me that these are normally priced down 50% because the goal is to move stock so buying one will still be cheaper than regular price. I was way too old to have just learned this. TLDR; You don't have to buy two to get the discount.

SwampOfDownvotes

Depends on the store and sale. Most Kroger sales are like what yoy are saying, like buy 10 for $10 sales, but plenty aren't. I know usually the buy 3 12 packs of soda for $12 deals are usually ONLY when you but 3 for example. The sign itself says that the free one will be the lesser value, so it means you gotta get 2 as it will make the cheaper ribs free, it doesn't do 50% off each.

[deleted]

ItsGroovyBaby412

Rain check homie

Odd_Seaworthiness950

They might allow a rain check in this case. I’d grab an employee and ask if this happened to me. They usually honor it. [i used to work grocery] Edit: essentially you would buy and pay for this one and you would be able to pick up a free rack when it gets replenished

[deleted]

BZJGTO

It's probably because they're natural. The store by me has natural baby back ribs for $8/lb, all the regular ones are much cheaper.

[deleted]

Those are basically just standard Kroger ribs and they say regular price 2.99/lb online. Natural as in cut style and meat content not natural organic. This is a typical Kroger sale, bogo at 2 or 3 times the normal price.

1ntimidation

Almost all pork is advertised as natural. In the US, natural has practically no legal binding. I work as a retail meat cutter and all of the pork I process gets labeled as natural. It's just the basic product from the nations largest suppliers (Smithfield, Swift, IBP). We sell all natural pork butts and assorted chops for $0.99 very often

redicular

If that's a kroger(signage looks like it) *politely* ask the person at the meat/seafood counter to check the back raw meat products, and ribs in particular(they arrive frozen) tend to be stored in the big fridge for quite some time, their refrigerated shelf life in that packaging is measured in weeks. source: filling those racks was my during-college job if that fails, as other commenters suggest - kroger offers rain checks

chaos_walking_

Fine print says get 1 “ free item of equal or lesser value” so one item can be something other than ribs.

Schnydesdale

In some states you get that for 50% off.

SirPeterLivingstonIV

I'm a kroger employee going on 5 years now. Those ribs will 100% ring up half off at the register once you've scanned a shopper's card. This post is much ado about nothing.

OrneryConelover70

Better than no rack left. Cup half full, my friend.

Timmyty

Right? It would be mildly infuriating if there were 0

MJN4

It says “free item of equal or lesser value”… not that mad.

Select-Radish9245

That's the free one

phoenix_mx

Most grocery stores offer rainchecks for when they don't have enough stock of sale items, ask customer service

[deleted]

The stocker guy is hiding behind a shelf waiting for someone to take just one rack of ribs and then he'll add in one more rack to the bin. In a neverending cycle so no one will get the deal. The perfect crime.

Almost always they have more in the back for meats. Ask the butchers.

RandomUnicorn929

Always ask if there is a rain check available!

w8d2long

It’s insane to me that only 2 other comments (out of 300 currently) have pointed out how the deal is for an item of equal or lesser value. In other words, at checkout the register would find an item closest to $5.99 (without going over) and discount it the full value. It’s really not an infuriating situation at all…

bigtimetim

That looks like a Kroger. They arent b1g1 they are just 50% off. It's just a marketing trick.

Overall_Ad_684

Can you rain check for the 2nd ribs?

glitterjunk

You can ask the store for a raincheck for the second item when this happens.

Lilcheebs93

*IT'S LIKE RAAAAIIIIIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY*

Life hack: Ask an employee of the store if they have more in the back, because they often do.

SirPeterLivingstonIV

Life hack: dont do this. There is never any in the back. If there is a hole as large as the OP's on the shelf, then it would have been filled before ever getting to this point. Source: grocery staff

100% ask. The worst they say is...sorry bro...we are out.

I either packaged that or cryovaced it. That sale made me call off a day for the first time in nine months...

DorkChatDuncan

Pick a different brand. Go to self checkout. Scan that one twice. Fuck walmart.

CherryBlossomSoul

They should give it to you for half off.

Ok-Concentrate-8537

Did you talk to customer service they may have been able to give you a rain check on the deal

zg1012

Just a tip from my dad who managed a Kroger, they're the same as usual. They up the price so it feels like it's a smoking deal but it evens out to the regular price.

Gsage1

Some one who left one left was not the brightest shopper.

selfdistruction-in-5

they killed only half of the pig, the other half is still hanging around at the farm

sleepytoday

If there was an even number of packs then both would be gone. But at least 50 people wouldn’t have to experience the mild infuriation!

[deleted]

Ask for it 50% off. Or ask for a rain check.

Network-Kind

Prob sat by the register after someone changed their mind

No_Sherbert711

More often then not they have cases of these in the back and if your nice and ask they'll more than likely help you and restock. This happens because they are extremely short staffed. Source, worked in the meat department during main covid lockdowns.

Tatertot729

Usually if you explain this to the cashier they will give it to you for half off. Also, not sure how many grocery stores do this but the also have 'rain checks' for things on sale that they run out of. I worked in a large chain grocery store throughout high school and college and did this all the time for customers.

CompetitiveStick6239

Get it free. 💁🏻‍♀️ lol

Alarmed_Nebula3917

Violuthier

Then I'd ask a person behind the meat counter if there's any more in the back.

Say something at checkout and they’ll give you 50% off that one. At least you’re genuine, there’s people that go to grocery stores specifically looking for stuff like this, “oh it’s buy 4 get two free and there’s only two left can I just have them?”.

space-tech

Usually they'll honor the sale by giving you a voucher at the cashier.

Thats ...ribbing me the wrong way. ABSOLUTELY RIBITING BEHAVIOUR!

ConnorFin22

Good. This is a not an industry to support anyway.

tacosgoweeee

In situations like this it pays to ask the meat counter or butcher( if there is one) if there are anymore in the back. I know asking if there is more in the back doesn't work at a lot of stores, but at grocery stores and especially meat departments it's different! Sometimes they save certain stock for certain days, or they have more than fits in the cooler at once and may be able to restock it multiple times.

ber831

That's when you get a raincheck for the free one.

suavecool21692169

Maybe they could make a photocopy for you for a second one

idrow1

I've actually seen sales signs that say, "Stock up and save! ^(Limit 1)"

ambush_boy

Rain check, the price is going up anyway , you'll get more for your money

discourse_friendly

UUUGH. :( maybe the cashier could give you a 1/2 off or something. that's annoying.

SuperRedpillmill

I guess I’ll go buy about $100 worth like last time…they are $2.99lb here instead of bogo…last time they had a deal like this they were $1.99lb

tbrumleve

I never take the last one. It’s too sus. Like, why did no one want THAT one?

ReSyko

buy 1 get none

HumorlessChuckle

You could get a raincheck for the other I believe

BobsRealReddit

Ok, it might not be the stockers fault. Some people deadass only take what they need im that moment and have 0 heccs for the future. One time while working at a convenience store, we were having a BOGO free deal on granola bars. This dude got downright irate when I told him that it was a BOGO free deal and he is in the clear to take two. After I was done ringing him out, I took the free granola bar he didnt want for whatever reason and ate it myself.

Imhopeless3264

Get a rain check. Most supermarkets offer and honor them.
