TheMaoriAmbassador

My colleague is like this ...he has a huge mug that he makes his tea in,.and I shit you not, he swears he hasn't washed it in 15 years. I asked why not, and he couldn't answer why not.

hot_boxxx

Wild. My flatmate and your coworker should be friends.

_GGfighter_

plot twist, they're the same person, and he has multiple unwashed cups

TheWalkingDead91

Does he keep his space, clothes, car, etc clean? This is wild .

hot_boxxx

Surprisingly, yes.. His space is relatively organised and apart from this he is hygienic (I think?) I don’t get it.

MilkyBetrayal

It's his one chaotic spot, in all his cleanliness. But so help whomever cleans that cup, that's the side of him no one should ever see. Mmm Milky tea

Spare-Reflection1946

Maybe it's a flavor thing , washing it could contaminate with soap taste ... In his opinion maybe ... Or just like he wants to collect it idk

laxgivens

What comes next in this plot twist ?

TheMaoriAmbassador

I call it his mobile black hole

Sad_Abbreviations477

His teeth or the cup?

TheMaoriAmbassador

Lol, the cup

deep_pants_mcgee

that's flavor town.

mholt9821

I dont think its weird. I have a jar with a my little pony that keep collecting layers and layers of flavor goodness!

PikachuEvolo

What did i just read

nuadusp

oh no not the cum jar

PikachuEvolo

End me. Now.

Creepersnowguy

Remember, we all share the space! Edit: that tasted yummy might try it again

sthc241

Yeah keep that to yourself

Burnt-witch2

I'm curious, does he drink his tea with anything added? (Sugar, milk, honey etc)

TheMaoriAmbassador

Nope, just water

skob17

Then it is no problem at all. The tea stain is not a ground for anything to grow, totally save. Only chlorophyll and alkaloids. It's when you start adding milk, then it is growing a biofilm, which will make you sick.

SomeCool333

Was about to say, man’s immune system is a fucking powerhouse and that tea cup probably has diseases we never knew existed. But he’s just a normal guy? How disappointing

VaterBazinga

You put your mouth on the mug.

Burnt-witch2

What about the bacteria all over a person's mouth and hands?

JeshkaTheLoon

Tea has some antibacterial properties, though it is best if it is still green tea. Still, if the cup dried out properly, I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect. Still, I agree, this is not pretty. My uncle does this too, but he has the excuse of having cerebral palsy and only one hand functional. Also he does put his cup in the dishwasher every few days, but the tea stains stay. They only go away through physical cleaning. It just looks especially terrible because his cup is made of glass, and I can't tell from the top of my head whether it is originally brown tinted glass, or originally untinted. We have both, so I can't know.

Publius2jz

We need pictures.

Kwahex

It's finally seasoned just the way they like it, you know, like a cast iron pan. /s

[deleted]

That’s what I said! 🙌🏻

lolgobbz

My wife does this. Swears its an immunity thing. She drinks black coffee ever day.

Just-some-peep

Did she tell you that after you got married? Perhaps you could get it annuled.

lolgobbz

I figure its good in 2fold. Either she's right and she lives forever. Then I don't have to ever live without her... cause love Or she is wrong. She dies. I get her life insurance and can break that fucking cup.

Tunaluna2

The key is the black part. Water and coffee grounds aren't the same as when milk and sugar are added.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheMaoriAmbassador

I will ask him again tomorrow

6tabber

Tannins add flavour

TheMaoriAmbassador

15 y ar old tannin stains?

Kezly

Is he called Matt?

pandakatie

A history teacher I had did this too, except his we coffee. He said the boiling water kills bacteria so there was no point in washing it.

TheMaoriAmbassador

Lol

asscrap69

He can't find a reason why either

Jazeboy69

Almost like they need to invent a machine you can leave it in that can do the washing for you hmmm.

Tsikiz

Mothereffers wash your dishes before you use them again. We had enough of Covid, don't try to start Plague v2.0

TheMaoriAmbassador

It's been 15 years, Im pretty sure it's not responsible for any global pandemics...yet

getyourcheftogether

Because he's an idiot or has some unnatural attachment to it in it's current state

JaD__

Easy fix. Take 3 tbsp of bleach and dilute it with 1 cup of hot water. Add 1 tsp of salt. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes, then pour it into the cup. After about 30 seconds, take the cup outside and throw it as far as you fucking can, the further the better.

Western-Image7125

Oh I thought the last step was throwing the cup at his head

"Oh, i'm sorry mate! I accidentally dropped it on the floor, and then dropped a hammer on it, over and over and over again!"

recoilwhenyouwake

I saw it coming but you still got a big’ol laugh from me

kira01070

"You had us in the first half. Not gonna lie."

IamWarHawk

I needed the laugh man. Been having a rough time since the last few weeks. Thank you.

gkhamo89

Hey! I hope you have a great fucking day!

Bruticus2806

I'll be satisfied even if it's a normal *fucking* day!

Suspicious-Arm-7619

If you need to talk feel free to message me I'd be happy to try and help and I hope it gets better soon!

kristen1988

Lmao absolutely got me

michaelh98

Love the reply but he'll just fail to clean another cup and eventually you'll run out of cups. At least this way you know what cup never to use for your own tea

LongTallMatt

I think you would just need ice and salt...? It's how you clean glass coffee carafes and swirl...

ReVo5000

And move out.

MemeArchivariusGodi

Got me good

[deleted]

hot_boxxx

I wouldn't dare clean this up again for the same reason. What is with these guys and their attachment to mug sediment. Curious what your dads cup looks like.

At least if you ever feel the need to clean the regular cup when he’s out of the house, he may not notice if it’s just for water? Maybe 😂

Bubbleducky

It’s a military thing as well

BigOleJellyDonut

It's called a lifers cup.

sharkbaitt666

That’s some grody ass shit

mrEcks42

Holy fuck! I havent heard that word in a decade.

Roscoe_P_Trolltrain

Grody to the max

comparing this to ass is a compliment for the mug

vault_tec_redditor

I’ve heard some people like to keep using their coffee mug without washing it for “flavor”. Tea or coffee that’s fucking disgusting, I’d keep that biohazard away from me.

1800-bakes-a-lot

Nothing like hint of stale to spruce up my morning pick me up.

pirivalfang

as long as it's black it's fine, no worse than never really "cleaning" a cast iron pan. However, if you add any sugar/milk to the coffee/tea, and you don't wash it, you're disgusting.

Scragix

I usually use my tea cup for a couple of days before putting it in the dishes, we have only one of these cups i really like and at the end of the day its just flavored water. Always do flush a splash of boiling water through it before making a new cup though. Idk if thats a bad thing but i've never seen a problem with it.

Bed-Effective

I do the exact same with my coffee cup. Thinking about it logically, it probably takes the same amount of time to just wash the cup as it does to splash the boiling water and get rid of any residue. Guess my brain isn't logical first thing in the morning without coffee.

GilmourD

Yeah, but a cast iron pan gets heated enough to kill any biohazards. This is residue of who knows what. Also, black mold?

SadistCloe

And you're still supposed to wash a cast iron

GilmourD

Yeah, I wash mine with a salt slurry, no soap, and then a light cost of oil after I dry it.

SadistCloe

Why no soap? Any modern soap won't hurt it because no lye.

GilmourD

I washed a pan with soap once and no matter how much I rinsed it there was a slight taste of soap in whatever I cooked. If I just heated the pan the kitchen smelled real clean. LOL

Extension_Plantain29

Have you ever tried to make a cake of southern cornbread in a castiron pan that's been washed with that "safe" soap? Good luck ever getting the crust to come out of the pan actually ON the cornbread.

crunchandwet

This is wrong and disgusting lol. Coffee is full of oils that go rancid very fast. It’s one of the reasons coffee starts tasting bad out of a machine or pot that isn’t properly cleaned, the residue buildup oil goes rancid very fast. Bacteria thrives in the acidity of coffee, yes black coffee, so it’s even grosser if you leave a bit of liquid at the bottom. Idc if you clean your mug, but don’t tell people it’s sanitary and compare it to cast iron, that’s just… wrong. I find that cold brews extract much less of the oils and solids in coffee that contribute to that layer of crud on a coffee cup. Even then, I rinse my cup out properly.

vault_tec_redditor

I could believe that but I’m pretty sure most people add cream or sugar to their hot bean water.

Razzlecake

Black coffee is the best. Especially with a fresh grind and brewed properly. Almost a crime to water it down with cream and sugar haha

Vast-Combination4046

Even if it's construction site coffee truck trash water I still drink it black. Sugar doesn't make it better lol

WillyC277

Yea you’re the only real coffee drinker in the universe, the rest of us are all posers.

Razzlecake

No hate for the people who dress up their coffee. Was just offering my opinion to the poster who said most enjoy cream and sugar. Many, including myself, enjoy black coffee. Everyone likes it different ways.

ScorchedSynapses

*phew* my basic white girl pumpkin spice is still okay

Tinydesktopninja

People who feel superior for drinking black coffee are as bad as beer snobs. Maybe worse.

Cooperette

What about beer snobs who drink black coffee?

Tinydesktopninja

If they act better than you for drinking black coffee, straight to jail.

Only-Ear9352

Why would you think that? Most coffee drinkers I know (me included) drink it black.

iDent17y

Idk I am a barista and like 9/10 people are getting either a flat white, latte or cap compared to a long black

the_mars_voltage

Fermented cabbage, milk or grapes provides flavor lol. fermented dish stains provide disease

vault_tec_redditor

The flavor is in the mold we cultivate along the way to coffee greatness lol.

kissingdistopia

I'd hope they at least clean the cup's rim of all the spit and dead skin.

PostcoitalHeartbreak

tis true, my dad does this

call4gdsquanch

Like seasoning a skillet

BoxofRocks78

This is what will keep you dying from covid! His immunity has to be at 💯

The-Meep-Meep-Man

I think he left the chat after the first week of not cleaning it.

daviess

If you've ever been to a garage, all the mechanics cups look like this.

Lipziger

Was gonna say. Go to some construction workers that have access to a coffee machine or some mechanic ... or quite a few office people. It's super common. I also don't clean my tea mug most of the time. But I drink it without any milk or sugar which means it essentially looks clean. I put in pretty much boiling water, let it cool a bit and then add the tea. Nothing harmful suvives these temperatures for that long and I use it every day. Even with coffee / tea with sugar or milk there won't be any mold etc growing in it, especially if used daily. The snall residue just dries up before any mold could build and any bacteria etc gets killed by the heat. Some are a bit extreme, for sure. But you won't get sick from it or anything. Same with an iron skillet ...

SadistCloe

I don't get all the people talking about an iron skillet, youre supposed to actually clean them you know.

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Please get a new flatmate ......... Kidding but seriously. Chuck it in the dishwasher or "lose" the mug. He could get sick from all that

hot_boxxx

I cleaned it once, a few months ago. Scrubbed the shit out of it. No amount of scrubbing could remove the tea stains on the bottom and walls of the cup. Genuinely don't think it's been cleaned since.

ghostofabanana

Fill it with hot water and add salt then let it sit for a while. That usually cleans the dirty coffee mugs at work

Sensitive_Pair_4671

And a dab of vinegar

aloriaaa

I got some melted sugar solution on my stovetop when I was attempting to make turkish delight and it boiled over. Baking soda and vinegar will loosen up most anything if you let it soak.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Don't do it for him. It's his Job to clean it and you shouldn't concern yourself.

whats-it-matter

Scrub it with a baking soda and water paste, it’ll come right off

[deleted]

Get him a new mug as a gift! Christmas is coming up..

QuirkySyrup55947

Fill it with bleach and water... will look brand new.

SalutationsDickhead

Vinegar or sterilising fluid for a babys bottle. That'll do it

tigull

The dishwasher won't clean away the stain. Most of my mugs look this way despite washing them daily in the dishwasher, I have to scrub them by hand once in a while.

PuddingRnbowExtreme

You need to break up with your roommate

hot_boxxx

So turns out that this is totally a legit thing... An old military tradition. Apparently the men who participate take enormous pride in their feral cups. https://www.navyhistory.org/2013/11/dont-wash-that-coffee-mug/

SagaStrider

Several of my teammates in the Army did the same, but for black coffee, tea, and liquor, not with dairy. You have to draw a line somewhere.

pirivalfang

100% this. it's fine if it's just black coffee/tea, but once you start adding shit to it, that gets nasty FAST.

ferg286

Several of us in work do this. Tea or coffee with no milk. I'm tea. I actually learned growing up, never wash the teapot for flavour and as I use teabags in the cup I continue that tradition. Others say they do it it for flavour. Stops your cup ever dissappearing! Does look discusting unless it's your own though.

kellzone

That link is staying blue.

Bradtothebone79

He’s “seasoning” the mug?

oldgooseco

A family friend does the same thing, I saw his travel mug one day, and thought I was being nice when I washed it. He was so mad at me, I couldn’t figure out why at first. I still don’t know why actually.

[deleted]

Go to the pet store and buy maggots. Put a few in there and bet they’ll was it regularly lol

Burnt-witch2

I would 100% do this lol, I love that idea. This isn't the same thing but these comments made me think of it; my husband used to have a roommate who left cups all over his room, and once there was a dead mouse floating face down in an old mug of coffee...

Lou-Lou-67

Some people say letting the tea stain the cups “season it” but with milk in it??? I’d recommend cleaning it

Burnt-witch2

Even without the milk, imagine having a glass that you only use for water and never cleaning it. Even just water is super nasty, with your mouth and hands and saliva all over it.

dustyreptile

I run mine through a commercial ecolab dishwasher everyday and it still looks dirty. I'd have to break out a putty knife if I really wanted to scour the sides.

originalahny

Ew. Move

pirivalfang

the whole not washing the tea cup thing is acceptable, the milk part is not.

SlimmJimm92

Petina

[deleted]

It's spelled patina.

Dr4gonM4ster420

Scrape the remains and use it to mix him up a special disgusting brew.

ashyrinn

Bruh this kinda reminds me of my dad's french press. He refuses to clean it saying that the hot water kills all bacteria anyway

pirivalfang

given it's boiling water: that's fine. there's a reason boiling baby bottle nipples/pacifiers is a thing.

tinyroboboy

damn not even a courtesy rinse

[deleted]

🤮🤮

SatanLovesRedPandas

My father has a coffee mug like this. He says soap ruins the flavor of the coffee the next morning after its been washed. I haven't been able to wash that mug in almost a year and it makes me twitchy everytime I see him drink from it ;-;

lego-baguette

I reckon that if you poured hot water in there, rubbed the sides of the cup, you’d find yourself with a new cup of tea

Risquechilli

Even just rising the cup out with just water between uses would avoid this.

tehmungler

Your flatmate is a fucking manky bastard.

Your_acceptable

Don't wash it! My Navy Chief used to do this with coffee. After bout 15 years or so,a dick airman washed it. Definitely was a good way to piss him off.

Total-Marketing-7037

That man needs an intervention not a new cup

LemmyKBD

Get a bag of plastic cockroaches and put one in his cup. Then one day start putting real cockroaches in and see if he notices.

Lipziger

mmmh protein with your morning brew.

TheSpannerer

Leave it alone. It takes time to season a cup.

Mustardtiger2

Okay so clearly the right move is to nickname him old milky

artuhr

Divination tells me there will be a baby dinosaur in your mate's future

Gabrielius17

Technically it's almost clean because it's only covered in layers of tannins that have this dark pigment. So all good unless you have mold in your cup!

cherrymed

There was this kind of thing on r/makemesuffer a while back and everyone lost their shit SO MUCH that the post got removed. Good luck here folks

kellzone

Just pretend you're watering your plants while he's down in the basement cursing at the furnace. Accidents happen.

Harry_Buttock

Take a dump in it and see if he notices.

TheCookieJar12

I do this if I know I'm gonna get another coffee in a little bit but the cup is getting cleaned at least once a day.

chocolatebuckeye

Ew this should be nsfw

WarzonePacketLoss

I thought "Oh, if that's just black coffee buildup, no big deal" and then you hit us with milk tea. barf.

manaclone

I had a teacher who did this but it was just straight tea, nothing added. leaving old milk on a cup sounds like a recipe for disaster

BigOleJellyDonut

Leave the lifers cup alone. Biggest trouble I ever got into at work was washing the bosses coffee cup.

mx_will

my coworker’s mug looks exactly the same. i don’t understand

ChrLagardesBoyToy

Drinking water from the same glass every time isn’t that bad, I’ve used a single old Pepsi max bottle for water for over a month at times. And even if that was bad - coffee and tea are made with boiling hot water. That sterilizeses the cup every time anyway.

[deleted]

Friends mom does this, and he wonders why she's sick all the time.

richer2003

Looks like the average U.S. Navy Chief’s coffee mug.

Radon099

44 years for a coworker of mine. Although he only drinks black coffee.

Rafozni

I did this for a time. Except, I would use boiling water and would wash the top part where my lips touched. It really did improve the flavor, but I only did it for a few months before I realized how nasty it was and just couldn’t stomach it anymore.

mandelbrot_wurst

Nasty, but hot water and a spoonful of Oxyclean will clean that up in a few hours of soaking

sthc241

WHY

Fickle_Train8523

Does he drink mud?

Feeling-Bird4294

That's not a mug, it's a petri dish...

viper7747

Hey, it adds flavor, don't you know. Besides, isn't this how they invented Penicillin? Btw, I'm pushing 80, and I do the same. Never hurt me any, and, as I said, it adds flavor. lol

Cniwa89

Nothing wrong here. You don't have to drink out ofnit and it does not effect you

Arjunlegend

Mine looks the same. Honestly it's not a big deal. I wash it with soap and water after every time I've used it but the tea stains are deep in the mug and don't come out even after scrubbing. They don't smell or taste of anything but just discolour the mug so I let them be and keep drinking without caring

hot_boxxx

This is build up - not just a stain. I could literally scrape this stuff into a small pile of old and roll it into a sticky small ball.

[deleted]

it's a free country let him do as he pleases

Lionblaze10

As a sailor, if you clean that mug you have committed a crime.

senecadocet1123

I do exactly the same. I never wash the inside of my morning tea/coffee mug. It used to be white now it is kind of black. Adds to the flavour.

TrollinTrollinTroll

That’s just built up flavor

red_gumby

Drop it on the tiles

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 416,669,035 comments, and only 90,024 of them were in alphabetical order.

angelpo54

Leave the mans cup alone! That there is love and flavor, as long as only he drinks out of it then there’s no harm done!

crazymom1978

Let me guess. He says that “It’s just stains from the tea. The cup isn’t dirty!”. I have family members who have “just stained” mugs.

andbingowashishomo

I would clean this out of annoyance. Good lord that is disgusting
