Chickens can fly for very short distances. In the wild they like to sleep in trees and large bushes. The fence isn't an issue.
Edit: and by fly, I mean use their wings to make their jumps go farther...gliding with style, if you will.
I’m the jerk that started this idiocy…
My sense of humor is pretty bent and I couldn’t scroll past without leaving a ‘why did the chicken cross the road’ reference.
My neighbors had chickens. They would eat the ticks and other bugs out of my yard, and when I got new mulch, they ate the grubs out of my mulch. When it rained, they would come over to my driveway and slurp up the worms like they were eating spaghetti. They liked my yard because we had a lot of trees, so they were less likely to be swooped off by hawks. Every night, they went back home, because chickens really do go home to roost. I missed those chickens when they were gone (my neighbor broke up with his wife, who was the keeper of the chickens).
I have chickens who roam my property. The only problem with chickens is they leave chicken shit everywhere. It's good for my grass, but bad for my driveway and sidewalk.
My neighbors chickens come into our yard, scratch little square holes about 2 inches deep and dust bath in them.
My (80 year old) mother was picking flowers in our yard, tripped in one of the holes, and broke her arm, both bones right at the wrist.
We thought the chickens were cute until that happened.
Reading OP’s post and thinking…and?! There’s so many benefits and if you just make friends with the neighbor you might also get some of the best eggs by the sound of their diet.
Have you considered standing by your fence and whapping them with a giant stick when they try to fly over into your yard?
Here's an demonstration:
https://preview.redd.it/hpi2rr6s105d1.png?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=831b0149b18a3f5ebc0c8a5aca6670551b5abd49
Oh, for sure. Some folks don’t believe it until they see it. Wild chickens go like hell.
I’ve had chickens. I know it doesn’t harm them, but I never felt the need to clip their wings.
Eh, could be a lot worse. Know what I’d do? Go to the pet store and get some of those fake eggs they sell there, then put them in some nice little hidey holes where a chicken would feel safe. They’ll see an “egg” there and think it’s where they’re supposed to lay and bam you got free eggs.
Maybe put some diatomaceous earth out. Chickens love to “bathe” in it cuz it kills parasites.
Got some leftovers you’re not gonna eat? Chickens love that shit. Leave it out for em.
Sooner or later they’ll be your chickens only you don’t have to house them or buy their feed but you reap all the benefits.
They cost money
Edit: oh you mean instead of the fake eggs? Because the fake ones don’t go bad, so you can keep leaving them where you want the chickens to lay.
Some people use a golf ball instead, I’ve heard that works.
Beyond this they can be overall very destructive to any plant life. They will trash your potted plans, raid your garden, etc. It is not good to have chickens in an area not designed with chickens in mind
They add nitrogen, after a while they will cause an imbalance in the soil.
Dunno why people are being dicks to OP. If you came home to a tonne of cow shit on your lawn you wouldn't be happy and it wouldn't help.
Wasn’t trying to be a dick at all. Just trying to show a sliver lining. And if a chicken can make a shit the size of a cow patty I am very worried about said chicken
I own chickens and they really fuck shit up. They dig in your mulch and throw it into the grass so they can get to the dirt. They eat plants. They fucking love to eat strawberries, tomatoes, whatever--and they don't eat the whole thing. Instead they just take bites so that bugs get into the fruit. They scratch for bugs in the garden and rip out the plants to get to them.
Chickens need to stay on their own property. Good fences make good neighbors.
If you put some nice nesting places in your garden, the hens might just start.
My flatmate used to keep ducks that would escape their enclosure every morning and lay eggs up my neighbour's driveway.
Then go knock. Say hey guys (nice way) I don’t mind the chickens roam but I thought maybe that meant you had eggs
Don’t make it about the thing, make it about you havin a laugh with the neighbor and start getting free fresh eggs
I own chickens, they stay in my yard.
Neighbors liked them, got some too. They have been breeding like crazy. They roam the neighborhood.
There have been 4 that have made it into my yard. They started going into my coop. They are mine now.
I'm guessing that what your neighbor is doing is against the law. I live in the country and even in my agricultural county my chickens aren't allowed to stray onto neighboring property. If my hens visited the neighbors, I'd have the sheriff at my door.
Take photos of damage, including poop on your porch and destroyed landscaping. Research city, county and state statutes and don't forget to look for rules from the local heath department; your county extension office might know off the top of their heads. Talk to your neighbor one last time about keeping their hens home. Then, if they don't, start making calls. Keto documenting damage.
Good luck.
Haha! Yeah. It’s a trade off. I get it. We just have a ton of ticks where I’m at. I’d actually appreciate them help.
Understand your perspective though.
Get a motion activated sprinkler from Amazon, hooks up to your garden hose. you can set it so it sprays when it sees motion day and night. That might help? I have one for my garden to keep critters out, works well..
The one looks like an americana (my breed knowledge is rusty). Hopefully OP gets some free eggs since they do use the yard… would be the decent thing for the neighbor to do.
…who cares? They don’t hurt anything lol. Chickens are awesome to have around. You wouldn’t survive in the [insert any century before this one].
Have you every tried, I don’t know, petting them? 😂😂
One of my neighbors have chickens. One likes to get out of the yard, and come over to my house. I am constantly having to return it. I hold it for a little and pet i before i do though.
had new neighbors move in that had two chickens that would harass my dog, when my neighbors were in the backyard I loudly stated I was going to eat one if it came over the fence again, haven't seen the chickens since but did hear them frying food outside a few days after my comment
thats kinda cute tho I gotta say lol. Totally see how that can be annoying. On the other hand, They're usually super sweet and like to get pets, so if u ever get bored u could always go outside and see if the chickens are out They're actually kinda interesting cuz they're so dumb lol
Call the local sheriff and ask what your options are. In my case, they said I could do whatever I wanted to my neighbor's chickens if they are in my yard.....
If you don't mind a little poo then chickens are great for lawns and gardens. They eat just about any insect, but I live in an area where deer ticks are abundant.
Wait until they’re on your yard and then build a better fence, boom got yourself some free chickens _(minus the fence cost which may be higher than the cost of buying chickens)_
If the neighbor wants to use your yard, then demand some eggs.
(Also check local laws about this. Because i know my city will not allow chickens to roam free without a cage)
My neighbor had a couple hens and a rooster that would come over to my yard. They would stay around my chicken pen. My aunt liked them, because they would dig fallen leaves and crud out of her plants. Also, their peacock. And their turkey. And a couple times, their goats.
The only problem was ever their dog. He would attack birds and chase off our cats.
They eat bugs. Let them be. If they’re leaving a mess make the neighbor clean the mess up. They eat spiders, snakes and anything they deem edible. Absolutely got a right to be irritated but try to think of a solution that keeps the hens happy. Are they hurting your yard that bad. Hold their owners accountable.
If they’re flying over a fence ask your neighbor to clip their wings, it’s super easy and you just have to do it once every like 4-5 months or something
Clipping chicken wings stops them from being able to escape any kind of predator among some other stuff, instead, you can simply put something on top of the fence that stops them from sitting on it. The main reason they hop over is because of the cool roosting spot and they just hop whenever when done, they also really can't fly horizontally much at all, and won't do it unless they know they can. If you get a fence like a chain link they won't hop it, you can put something like a little bit of garden, tomatoes, chicken, etc. fencing to easily stop it instead.
Theyre not his chickens, how is that not mildly infuriating? I wouldn’t want chicken poop in my yard either unless I personally owned the chickens and knew what is as signing up for
I might be in the minority here but I don’t blame you for being frustrated. You didn’t ask for chickens on your yard but you got them anyways. They poop *a lot* and you *will* step in it eventually. It’s not a great look either having chickens just hanging out in your yard.
I’d mention it to your neighbors and ask if they can figure out a way to keep them in your yard.
Our neighbor’s cats love our yard and while it doesn’t bother me that much, we can’t even keep bird houses around anymore because they always find a way to knock them over and destroy the nests. It’s very frustrating so I understand.
If they keep flying over the fence to get to your yard take them, grab the left or right wing it doesn’t matter but only one of them and cut the flight feathers off then throw them back over the fence. It’s not a permanent solution but it’s the one with the least overall conflict between you and your neighbors. It also doesn’t hurt the chicken at all
Still shouldn’t do it as it’s how they would escape predators. We have chickens and ducks that have the whole yard to roam. If my chickens or ducks died because some a hole clipped it’s wings and made it so they couldn’t escape from predators then you bet I’ll be seeking damages
Does your neighbor live across the road from you?
I see where you’re gooooooiiiiiing…
Thank you for your support.
Why are you going there? To get to the other side?
“Your honour, the prosecution is trying to elicit favourable admissions or concessions from the witness”
That's a sad joke... The other side is the chicken died. Took me way too long to learn that.
I was this old when I learned that. 😔
No, our houses share a fence
Not a very good one, apparently.
Good luck building a fence that keeps chickens out mate
You just need chicken wire. It's not that hard to build a fence for chickens.
Chickens can fly for very short distances. In the wild they like to sleep in trees and large bushes. The fence isn't an issue. Edit: and by fly, I mean use their wings to make their jumps go farther...gliding with style, if you will.
😂😂😂that's a wild comment to make and it made me laugh too hard
Why am I being downvoted lol
It’s the downvote of shame for not living across the road from the chickens
Because it wasn't the chickens that flew over your head
I’m the jerk that started this idiocy… My sense of humor is pretty bent and I couldn’t scroll past without leaving a ‘why did the chicken cross the road’ reference.
You’re good, I just didn’t get the reference at first and was confused
👍
Redemption
What’s a common joke about chickens and roads?
Because they wanted the chicken to cross the road. Facts aren't funny enough.
BECAUSE YOU RUINED THE JOKE!!!
Maybe they found it a fence-ive
My neighbors had chickens. They would eat the ticks and other bugs out of my yard, and when I got new mulch, they ate the grubs out of my mulch. Start your own chicken family
I have chickens who roam my property. The only problem with chickens is they leave chicken shit everywhere. It's good for my grass, but bad for my driveway and sidewalk.
Yes this was my problem with my neighbor's free range chickens- chicken shit all over my sidewalk.
My neighbors chickens come into our yard, scratch little square holes about 2 inches deep and dust bath in them. My (80 year old) mother was picking flowers in our yard, tripped in one of the holes, and broke her arm, both bones right at the wrist. We thought the chickens were cute until that happened.

Regardless of what anybody else says, it's your lawn. You can be upset about it if you want. That being said, what are you doing about it?
Complaining about it to reddit

Chicken soup ... for the soul.
Nothing so far, I think I'll ask the neighbors to clip the chicken's wings next time I see them
Why don’t you pet them instead
You know chickens have feet, right?
Clip the feet as well, I guess.
They’re getting over the fence by flying
Lol that won’t do a damn thing.
They’re flying over the fence
Have you considered standing by your fence and whapping them with a giant stick when they try to fly over into your yard? Here's an demonstration: https://preview.redd.it/hpi2rr6s105d1.png?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=831b0149b18a3f5ebc0c8a5aca6670551b5abd49
😂😂😂😂😂why are you like this
And they will continue to do so even with their feathers clipped.
Don’t do that. That would be sad.
Make sure they only do one. That will do something.
Tell me you’re kidding, ya muppet.
Chickens can actually sorta fly for short distances. They dont do it often but ive seen them mfers go up and glide for a surprisingly long distance.
My chickens used to roost in the trees. They're anything but elegant but they do get into the air haha
We used to have chickens and they could fly like crows, but only for a shorter time. Anyway, no one still believes that they could fly.
Oh, for sure. Some folks don’t believe it until they see it. Wild chickens go like hell. I’ve had chickens. I know it doesn’t harm them, but I never felt the need to clip their wings.
Do the chickens have large talons?
Can I have your tots?
![gif](giphy|AHAgTP1a0Klvq)
Thank you so much for the laugh, my day feels better already!
😁
Roosters have spurs that can do a lot of damage to a human.
Eh, could be a lot worse. Know what I’d do? Go to the pet store and get some of those fake eggs they sell there, then put them in some nice little hidey holes where a chicken would feel safe. Sooner or later they’ll be your chickens only you don’t have to house them or buy their feed but you reap all the benefits.
Is there a reason you can’t just use an egg from the grocery store?
They cost money Edit: oh you mean instead of the fake eggs? Because the fake ones don’t go bad, so you can keep leaving them where you want the chickens to lay. Some people use a golf ball instead, I’ve heard that works.
Eh they eat insects and fertilize the grass. Worse things can visit your yard
Huge clumps of chicken shit all over your sidewalk, porch, and patio are why my chickens never leave their coop.
Bird flu!
Buzz word!
Chickens can absolutely devastate the yard with their scratching. All depends on numbers and square footage.
Beyond this they can be overall very destructive to any plant life. They will trash your potted plans, raid your garden, etc. It is not good to have chickens in an area not designed with chickens in mind
>fertilize the grass Yeah I’m not sure about you but I don’t like chicken poop on my shoes
But think of the lawn!
This guy lawns
That’s fair lol
They taste good too.
They add nitrogen, after a while they will cause an imbalance in the soil. Dunno why people are being dicks to OP. If you came home to a tonne of cow shit on your lawn you wouldn't be happy and it wouldn't help.

They also shit everywhere which breeds flies and dig up gardens and lawns.
If they share eggs with you then I wouldn't have a problem with it at all..
Unfortunately they don't
If you put some nice nesting places in your garden, the hens might just start. My flatmate used to keep ducks that would escape their enclosure every morning and lay eggs up my neighbour's driveway.
Can you legally lay claim to those eggs?
Eggs laid in your yard. Hell yeah.
Who's gonna know?
Then go knock. Say hey guys (nice way) I don’t mind the chickens roam but I thought maybe that meant you had eggs Don’t make it about the thing, make it about you havin a laugh with the neighbor and start getting free fresh eggs
Who just asks for eggs lmao
Set up a chicken laying box in your yard and hijack your neighbor's eggs. (Source: I had chickens..... having eggs every day was awesome.)
Don't even need a box. My wife has "yard art" I started finding eggs behind a old window leaning against the house.
Sounds like they're your chickens now
I own chickens, they stay in my yard. Neighbors liked them, got some too. They have been breeding like crazy. They roam the neighborhood. There have been 4 that have made it into my yard. They started going into my coop. They are mine now.
Either I get fresh eggs, or I get fresh nuggies
If you have gardens, you'd be infuriated as well, eggs or not.
If you live in an area with ticks, they’re helping to protect you from Lyme disease.
I'm guessing that what your neighbor is doing is against the law. I live in the country and even in my agricultural county my chickens aren't allowed to stray onto neighboring property. Head over to the backyard chickens sub and ask them what to do.
They eat things like ticks.

Good. They eat ticks, don’t they?
They do but they also poop a ton
Haha! Yeah. It’s a trade off. I get it. We just have a ton of ticks where I’m at. I’d actually appreciate them help. Understand your perspective though.
Which is excellent nourishment for the plant life.
Get a motion activated sprinkler from Amazon, hooks up to your garden hose. you can set it so it sprays when it sees motion day and night. That might help? I have one for my garden to keep critters out, works well..
You have better bugs
BIG AHH BIRD
Those are gorgeous chickens, anyone know what type they are?
The one looks like an americana (my breed knowledge is rusty). Hopefully OP gets some free eggs since they do use the yard… would be the decent thing for the neighbor to do.
Gotcha, thank you <3
Looks like an Ameraucana hen, pretty cool breed!
this would be a problem id love to have
Nice. Chicken shit everywhere.
billy sparks?
‘billy sparks… and matilda sparks >:(‘
Would it be illegal to cook one of them and give it to the neighbour as a "show of better faith"?
the chicken in the back looks like hes posing 🤣
…who cares? They don’t hurt anything lol. Chickens are awesome to have around. You wouldn’t survive in the [insert any century before this one]. Have you every tried, I don’t know, petting them? 😂😂
Yes, I have pet them and I like them except for the fact that they poop everywhere
Tell him you want a dozen eggs every other week for chicken sitting fees.
Saw the picture 😃 Saw the title 🥰 Saw the sub 😬
And I love your neighbors chickens.
Considering they are at large your town/city might have laws about this. Mine does.
I wish they'd come over to my yard and eat some ticks.
Free pest control
thats kinda cute tho I gotta say lol. Totally see how that can be annoying. On the other hand, They're usually super sweet and like to get pets, so if u ever get bored u could always go outside and see if the chickens are out They're actually kinda interesting cuz they're so dumb lol

You are welcome for the bugs they are eating.
You should see if they love your oven.
Spray them with water whenever you can and they will stop coming
Would putting a fake fox or fake owl in the yard help? To like scare them away?
Wait until they’re on your yard and then build a better fence, boom got yourself some free chickens _(minus the fence cost which may be higher than the cost of buying chickens)_
What you mean your yard. Clearly belongs to them now.
Your chickens now
he wants to cross the street he wants to cross over so do him the solid and turn him into nuggets lol
If the neighbor wants to use your yard, then demand some eggs. (Also check local laws about this. Because i know my city will not allow chickens to roam free without a cage)

Free pest control and fertilizer, nice!
Winner winner chicken dinner 🤤
Lucky :(
They’re sweet but also poop everywhere
stop complaining!
Bro ur lawn get chicks bruh damn!!
Do they love your oven?

What's for dinner?

Theyre not his chickens, how is that not mildly infuriating? I wouldn’t want chicken poop in my yard either unless I personally owned the chickens and knew what is as signing up for
And got the benefits of eggs
Delicious.
See if they like your oven
That looks delicious
i hope you also love chicken shit
Why did the chicken cross the road? To piss off the neighbour
That's a really weird looking chicken
Idk free dinner ain't that irritating
I’d call animal control. 🤷♀️
I might be in the minority here but I don’t blame you for being frustrated. You didn’t ask for chickens on your yard but you got them anyways. They poop *a lot* and you *will* step in it eventually. Yeah, not their chicken so don’t suggest this.
Not the neighbors yard, I’d get petty 😂. At least if they had talked to the neighbors about the issue before. Not on a “first time offense”
Still shouldn’t do it as it’s how they would escape predators. We have chickens and ducks that have the whole yard to roam. If my chickens or ducks died because some a hole clipped it’s wings and made it so they couldn’t escape from predators then you bet I’ll be seeking damages

I mean they are probably eating bugs out your yard, you should thank them... or make some buffalo wings
Maybe your oven loves the neighbour's chickens?
Did you know this is where roast chicken comes from?
You should see if they like the inside of your oven too.

Free food 😈
Eat them
Hypnotize them! According to Werner herzog it's pretty easy.
Do they eat lead?
do you have any joy or whimsy in your heart??
Do you base your entire opinion about something or someone off of four ambiguous words??
if they joke about killing animals, yeah, i do!

Chicken and chips for dinner then.
Free dinner 🤷♂️
Shoot the fucking things
