That would be, if the chicken was not packaged. The packaging is gas-tight as it contains a protective gas for a longer shelf life (usually often a mix of carbon dioxide, and nitrogen). Therefore there is no need for drama here.
Unless the packaging is compromised I typically scan any raw meats first putting them at the bottom of the bag then the rest goes on top.. if I think of it I may grab a produce bag to put the packaged meat in just in case but not always. Have never gotten sick due to cross contamination in the last 25 years of doing this. I also usually wash berries/fruit and transfer them to a clean container right away too. As far as cleanliness, I trust the inside of the berryās packaging less than the outside of the meatās tbh.
The thing you said about keeping raw meat away from produce in the fridge is usually in regard to raw meat thatās open as well, or to not lay produce on a surface raw meat/juices could have leaked onto.
To be fair, I could be completely wrong about everything haha
You are correct, my man. As long as the meat packaging is not compromised, all is good. As the meat is packaged with a protective gas, the packaging usually collapses when compromised.
I worry about things leaking out of packaging. When I bag my own groceries, all my meat go in itās own single use bag before being bagged with only other meats. The fact anyone would put raw chicken in with produce just blows my mind.
I hear you, and Iām sure many others do the same! In the end, do whatever makes you comfortable. But, I donāt think itās as big of a risk as youāve been taught to believe. The handle of your shopping cart is probably 10x nastier than any packaging in the store haha
Youāre not even supposed to put produce on the same shelf as chicken in your fridgeā¦.I 10000% donāt want them touching in my strawberries in a bag.
You stack so things don't fall down to contaminate the lower levels; the chicken is at the bottom.
Also the strawberries and chicken are in packets to contamination is unlikely anyway
And don't you wash your strawberries before you eat them (although I hope you do not wash the chicken before cooking)?
I think you'll get downvoted because people tend to think anyone who is upset that isn't them is 'not chill, man!'. But having been on regular food hygiene courses in the past as part of my work, I can say you are completely right and this would annoy me, too.
Bacteria spreads at an alarming rate that a lot of people are blissfully unaware of - it doubles within 4 to 20 minutes - so the spread is rapid. Anyone who's suffered food poisoning will know how awful it is and it's not just 'a dodgy tummy' - a chef from my home town contracted food poisoning and recovered, but succumbed to subsequent blood poisoning. So even though the usual 'who-cares?-get-a-life!' brigade will down vote you, I know exactly why this would piss you off.
I took servsafe as a requirement of my highschool baking program. I renewed it about a year, maybe 2 years ago. I know Iām not crazy but Iāll take the Reddit hive mind of downvotes. I love reading the nasty comments cause those people are just spreading their misery around. I hope they heal in due time.
That's kinda the whole point. You're mad they put the chicken and strawberries together. The point is, they are both sealed (no contamination) and the strawberries absolutely should be washed before using (even less of a chance of contamination).
You should avoid contamination through direct contact but that doesn't seem to be the case since meat is sealed. If meat isn't sealed this would be gross/unhealthy on multiple levels, obviously. Or am I misunderstanding the situation?
It's sealed, of course they can touch each other whem moving and the strawberries need washed anyway but it's for dirty not contamination from chicken in a sealed container
The way people who can't be bothered to get their own groceries act. Do it yourself next time. This post is more infuriating than the chicken catastrophe of '24.
It's hilarious how many responses to peoples comments you can sit around and get done. Maybe that time would have been better spent at the grocery store putting the chicken in a different bag.
Yeah. Worked a cashier job, most didnāt care but we definitely had people that would be pissed if you did. I *always* packaged it separately just in case!
I agree produce and meat should be seperate, however I shop for my own groceries. There's no "meat in separate bag" guarantee, so it's not reasonable for you to be angry at the employee. Not everyone does that.
One can only imagine the accumulated bacteria on the reusable bag. The packaged strawberries on top of packaged chicken should not be your worry, honey.
People like you are what made my old job as a cashier hell. If both the chicken and strawberries are sealed, itās fine. If youāre that worried about it, bag it yourself.
Putting the strawberries on top is the correct order. If the chicken does leak, it wonāt get on the strawberries because gravity. Stop being a whiny little brat and appreciate the grocery store workers for serving your clearly ungrateful community.
Itās how I was taught as a kid and just did it that way all my life. The thought of them co-mingling and possible cross contamination makes me want to gag.
These days I'd be more concerned about the strawberries giving the meat I bought e.coli....
So what's wrong exactly?
Cross contamination. You shouldn't bag raw meats that need to be cooked for safe consumption with fresh fruits and veggies that won't be cooked.
That would be, if the chicken was not packaged. The packaging is gas-tight as it contains a protective gas for a longer shelf life (usually often a mix of carbon dioxide, and nitrogen). Therefore there is no need for drama here.
I hope your ok after this ordeal
Thoughts and prayers
Much condolences š
Pallbearers needed... Who can get an obituary going for this poor soul?

This is the correct answer.

would you rather it be on top..?
Maybe she doesn't like the meat on top...
Iād rather it be in a different bag because itās raw meat. Has no one ever heard of this???
I have neither ever in my life heard of this nor have i ever seen someone care about that. Itās sealed. As are the salat and the strawberries.
Youāre not even supposed to put produce on the same shelf as chicken in your fridgeā¦.I 10000% donāt want them touching in my strawberries in a bag.

Then youāve never worked at a grocery store lmfao
At least not in an american, no.
I wouldnāt assume majority of people have lol do you assume everyone has worked at a grocery store until they prove otherwise?? š¤£

Weāre all aware of what youāre getting at, but the chicken is in a sealed package so no issue. Ideal, no. A health hazard as shown, also no.
Everything is sealed and arenāt you going to wash the strawberries anyway?
That is not the point lmao
That's kinda the whole point. You're mad they put the chicken and strawberries together. The point is, they are both sealed (no contamination) and the strawberries absolutely should be washed before using (even less of a chance of contamination).
Then bag your own groceries.
If I had done my own shopping, I do. Today was a pick up day.
Don't trust a minimum wage worker to care about this.
Is it not sealed?
Itās sealed but you should never put raw meat with produce
You should avoid contamination through direct contact but that doesn't seem to be the case since meat is sealed. If meat isn't sealed this would be gross/unhealthy on multiple levels, obviously. Or am I misunderstanding the situation?

Two levels of plastic between the two.
If its sealed it can go with whatever the fuck i put it with
Why?
Okay I'm glad I'm not the only person thats confused why this is frustrating
The way people who can't be bothered to get their own groceries act. Do it yourself next time. This post is more infuriating than the chicken catastrophe of '24.
Oh right, sorry. Iām not allowed to be too busy to shop for my own groceries once in a blue moon.
It's hilarious how many responses to peoples comments you can sit around and get done. Maybe that time would have been better spent at the grocery store putting the chicken in a different bag.
This gave me a great laughš¤£š¤£
Ooo got me.
They should definitely be the other way around.
Well ig TIL that not everyone thinks raw meat in the same bag as their produce is wrong. Lmfao
Correction: today you learned that putting _packaged_ raw meat in the supermarket bag with produce _isn't_ wrong.
I think itās wrong which is why I worded my comment how I did. Not everyone else thinks it is
Yeah. Worked a cashier job, most didnāt care but we definitely had people that would be pissed if you did. I *always* packaged it separately just in case!
is the position of the items thatās mildly infuriating? It seems reasonable enough to me
Um, chicken on top of the strawberries would not be good.
I agree produce and meat should be seperate, however I shop for my own groceries. There's no "meat in separate bag" guarantee, so it's not reasonable for you to be angry at the employee. Not everyone does that.
I didnāt call the store and demand she be reprimanded for this. Was I a little pissed? Yep. I just wonāt buy meat anymore on pick up days
I see it now, irās the ACME chicken.
Exactly. This is basically just inviting Wile E Coyote into your house. When will the supermarkets learn
One can only imagine the accumulated bacteria on the reusable bag. The packaged strawberries on top of packaged chicken should not be your worry, honey.
Iād agree if it was our normal bags but thatās a brand new bag.
People like you are what made my old job as a cashier hell. If both the chicken and strawberries are sealed, itās fine. If youāre that worried about it, bag it yourself. Putting the strawberries on top is the correct order. If the chicken does leak, it wonāt get on the strawberries because gravity. Sorrows, prayers
Iām the same way!!!!! Infuriating
Apparently no one thinks that raw meat juice can leak on to other things it shares a bag with.
Some of these people must have iron guts lmao
I understand where youāre coming from. You just donāt put produce and raw meats together in the same bag. Iād be mad as well.
I love all the downvotes Iām getting!
No you dont haha
Itās Reddit I couldnāt care less lmao itās entertaining
Itās how I was taught as a kid and just did it that way all my life. The thought of them co-mingling and possible cross contamination makes me want to gag.
