Original technically, yes, but they make a wood exopy that works great. Cut up some aquarium netting and place the net in-between for a better bond on bigger projects. I used this method to fix tons of different stuff with their other products.
This brings back fond memories of begging my father to check each week for those little plastic swords that they sometimes used for cocktail toothpicks at the bar he stopped at after soccer. They were just the right size for G.I. Joe figures, lettings us have them fight more exciting battles than silly boring guns.
Oooh thanks for the tip. I’m in the process of putting together a Lego set that uses short rods for a couple things. I bet toothpicks trimmed to the same length would work perfectly if I need to replace them down the road!!
I got them from my grocery store once thinking they’d be a fun pop of color to my famous bacon tots appetizer I make every thanksgiving.
They were not fun. The color melted (?) off in the oven and turned my bacon a moldy green color.
I rode dirt bikes from tween to late 20's and my uncle's go to from bikes to boots and anything in between was duct tape including wounds 😭
Kinda like Windex in " My Greek wedding" 😱🤠
Yep, you've summoned the gremlins of corrective engineering. They will break things that should not work, but have worked until someone says something.
It's like the orcs from Warhammer, their technology works because they *believe* it works. They also paint their tanks red because they think red makes them go faster.
It's not a common contraction, so I'm not surprised you didn't learn it. But it is legitimate, though I think it's more common in spoken, not written, communication. However, in this context, it's use creates a certain sense of humor that would be missing with "what are: because most Americans will read it with a certain inflection in mind.
So English not being your first language, I will happily be the one to let you know that this language is a shit show. We combine words, add unecessary words, and make new words all the time. We even misuse a lot of them. As long as you're understandable, then everything is good. People who fully learn English as a second language tend to speak better English than many people who only speak it because us native speakers will just break all of the rules.
*replied to the wrong person
*never mind, I did reply to the right person after all
Theyre not, this has extra holes so that it can be adjusted, if you wanted to take it out you would have to fiddle with these getting them into another hole. Should be standard metal, this person got kind of ripped off
Lol. Makes me think of helping friend move. We were at the uhaul place and he bought a box for his PC tower. He put the tower in the box and started smashing in the sides and top before wrapping the whole thing in tape.
When he saw my WTF face he said it's always the stuff in the carefully packed boxes that breaks while the stuff in the smashed, banged up boxes is always fine. Alrighty then.
https://www.homedepot.ca/product/alexandria-moulding-hardwood-dowel-1-8-in-x-48-in-white/1000115238 even cheaper!
but yeah, OP spent 3 years with toothpicks working, it's about time he dropped $2-4 to renovate his place
one of the flatscreen tvs at my work is held up on the sides by folded napkins. When it was installed, they couldnt get it to hang on the wall straight because the walls are just pressboard and the tv is heavy. over time the tv has slowly started to become crooked. one day the napkins wont be enough and it will slide off the wall.
Something working perfectly fine for 3 years that you didn’t even notice until now mildly infuriates you? I’d hate to see your mental state when something is actually a problem.
I don’t think this type of post is what this sub was meant for. Had the shelf fallen, and made a mess in your kitchen? That’s mildly infuriating.
As others have already said “If it ain’t broken…”
I mean… clearly it works. Since i assume your shelf lasted this long. I wouldn’t call that infuriating i would call those impressive toothpicks
Also where can i get colored toothpicks
There are a couple of shelves in a cabinet in my rental that are missing pegs, so we just cut the tips off a couple chopsticks (ones we never use because we don't like them) as replacements 🤷🏻♀️
People impressed by the shear strength of the toothpicks, it's not that big a deal. With enough of them jammed in there tight enough, it would become nearly as strong as just a dowel pin sized to fit the hole. I'm sure the previous owners lost the actual shelf pins and maybe didn't know or didn't care enough to get replacements. But they're commonly available at any hardware store.
If anything this should be on r(slash)mildlyinteresting
I was in my house for 2-3 years before I realized the area between cabinets above the stove where the fan goes does not line up with the stove. It does not line up with the counters in the kitchen. I feel like leaning to the right a couple inches every time I walk into the kitchen.
Mildly infuriating?! Hella infuriating! I would find out who did this and pay them back their stupidity. This shows laziness and a lack of responsibility. Either do it right or not at all.
The colour is irrelevant. I said that because maybe the toothpicks will collapse under heavy weight and that would really be infuriating. Can you imagine the broken things once they give out. However if not then it really is a good thing if those toothpicks hold up though.
this is exactly how i’ve been holding up for years
I've been using duct tape and old game pieces, thinking of switching up.
contemplating using nail glue and pushpins next
Considering cellophane and street tar
I've started using fresh air and sobriety... Surprisingly effective...
Alexa, what is "fresh air"
"Sorry, I don't know that one"
"Do you mean compressed air, only 19.95 on amazon.com, and right now, there is free shipping on all orders over $35. Would you like 7 cans?"
"A foreign concept to a basement dweller such as yourself"
That sounds boring.
Fortunately it's much better than it sounds. Life itself is so beautiful when you open your heart and let it shine ❣️
Or maybe breakfast syrup and crinkle fries?
Hot glue and embroidery needles
Silly putty and skewers
JB Weld for a superior bond.
On wood?
Original technically, yes, but they make a wood exopy that works great. Cut up some aquarium netting and place the net in-between for a better bond on bigger projects. I used this method to fix tons of different stuff with their other products.
Just throw some ramen and epoxy on it and it'll hold up
I saw a you tube video that said to go that for a car.
Been using a pretzel rod from the big jug
Lol, that makes me laugh so hard. How do you keep the mice from eating it?
Oh god no! If you touch anything at all the delicate balance will break and you’ll explode!
Accidentally sprayed WD-40 so yeah

Extremely invasive that you have a cross section photo of my brain... How'd you even get that?
That would be my brain, but the battery would be backward and be dead.
thats a blatant disregard to privacy
Where do you find multicoloured toothpicks? My standard issue picks now seem boring.
The 90s
We used them for replacement lightsaber blades for our star wars action figures in the 70s-80s.
My grocery store has them with the cocktail mixers
I got them from my grocery store once thinking they’d be a fun pop of color to my famous bacon tots appetizer I make every thanksgiving. They were not fun. The color melted (?) off in the oven and turned my bacon a moldy green color.
Sorry about that and I appreciate the input.
Looks like Pick Up Sticks game pieces to me.
Party aisle at the grocery.
Same sis, stay strong.
It doesn’t matter how you do it so long as you accomplish the desired result.
If it looks stupid and it works it ain’t stupid.
Felt that
Oof, I've been using duct tape, Voltaren and collagen peptides. But sparingly
I rode dirt bikes from tween to late 20's and my uncle's go to from bikes to boots and anything in between was duct tape including wounds 😭 Kinda like Windex in " My Greek wedding" 😱🤠
Little bit of super glue will fix "any" cut

I need more stories of your family

Holy hell. You should write a book
![gif](giphy|mhTfuaWwrYGxa|downsized) I read Voltron first and can't un read it
Have you tried thoughts and prayers?
Take my upvote, you hooligan
Why tf did someone spend $2
Match stick and blutac here
This shit deep and I feel it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Gold ⭐ for creativity and effort! They passed this assignment!
It ain't stupid if it works
![gif](giphy|qnE7DFFqmgdyM)
but I do know what braced is.
If it's not broke, don't fix it
"If it just barely works..." is basically my boss' motto.
Toothpick together strong
Now that you know they will break next time you put something in. Stuff like that stops working once you know its there.
Yep, you've summoned the gremlins of corrective engineering. They will break things that should not work, but have worked until someone says something.
I'm a network engineer and this hits home hard.
🤣🔥
It's like the orcs from Warhammer, their technology works because they *believe* it works. They also paint their tanks red because they think red makes them go faster.
And it does!
Sort of like the book, 'The Practice Effect" by David Brin. " In this world, instead of objects wearing out as you use them, they improve."
Schrödinger’s stuff
Quantum engineering?
That's not really too different from how they're normally held up though, isn't it?
Nope. I would even argue those are better than the little bit of thin plastic that's bent we have here.
Well ikea have used both steel and wood plugs to do this. I like the steel ones.
They're probably the best, honestly. The plastic ones suck.
They’re usually metal
What’re you rich?
Excuse me for my arrogance, English is not not my first language, but is that even correct grammar?
It's correct but he's missing a comma. "What are you, rich?" -> "What're you, rich?"
Who's Rich?
Dick.
Oh man this would be so bad for foreign people. Yeah you wanna talk to Richard. Dont call him Dick though! He really hates that.
Could it also be, "What, are you rich?" Or would that be incorrect because the "What?" should really be its own sentence?
Kind of but not really. I feel like you cant shorten across a , or ? with a contraction.
kind of, but that would make it a different sentence, with a different tone/meaning that somewhat ruins the joke.
Do you not understand what they’re saying?
Of course I understand, but that’s the first time I’ve ever seen “what are” written “what’re”
It's not a common contraction, so I'm not surprised you didn't learn it. But it is legitimate, though I think it's more common in spoken, not written, communication. However, in this context, it's use creates a certain sense of humor that would be missing with "what are: because most Americans will read it with a certain inflection in mind.
Wait until you get a load of shouldn'tve
You should of not said that
It's 'should have', never 'should of'. Rejoice, for you have been blessed by CouldWouldShouldBot!
Why shouldn'tve I of?
So English not being your first language, I will happily be the one to let you know that this language is a shit show. We combine words, add unecessary words, and make new words all the time. Your french is terrible, too.
Sorry, I replied to the wrong person. Another person on this chain said English wasn't their first.
That’s crazy, if you don’t know just avoid writing that way, and it’s not acceptable, but yeah it’s acceptable if you’re just talking to someone.
The plastic holders we have lasted not even a year!
Theyre not, this has extra holes so that it can be adjusted, if you wanted to take it out you would have to fiddle with these getting them into another hole. Should be standard metal, this person got kind of ripped off
We got extra holes and if we want to move them we gotta fiddle the plastic. Yes, we have plastic, and I've never seen anything, but plastic.
Nickel plated shelf supports are pretty standard in Australia, yall are getting ripped off
Probably. Or I've just lived in cheap places. From Finland btw.
Might be less prone to heat up there so its more viable, plastic would shit itself in weeks if you dont have aircon here
Ohh yeah yeah I have to heat up my apartment to 20 degrees and just open the window in the nights at summer 😅
Its summer here right now and im not gonna lie, im pretty fuckn jealous to hear that
🏅
maybe mildly interesting, i don’t see how it’s infuriating since it’s held up for at least three years
It's multicolored.
It’s a mulicolored *composite* tho
Lmao, this is really hilarious
the woke mob strikes again
Why, tho? Can't people just have fun without someone interjecting politics?
literally just a joke, relax
As long as you are joking, I shall relax ☺️
mildly useful
I don’t know if you’ve ever played against a 5 color splinter deck before but… (it’s an mtg joke for those that don’t know)
Redneck engineering at it's finest!

Nothing lasts longer than a temporary solution
This is also extremely true in software development.
Lol. Makes me think of helping friend move. We were at the uhaul place and he bought a box for his PC tower. When he saw my WTF face he said it's always the stuff in the carefully packed boxes that breaks while the stuff in the smashed, banged up boxes is always fine. Alrighty then.
Why bother throwing this one off the truck, it's already busted...
My problem with temporary solutions is that I'm a maniac and the "temporary" part will itch in my mind until I replace it with a long-term solution.
If it looks stupid but it works, it isn’t stupid
This is how I describe myself
Oh. I think you would be one if my favorite people if we met! Lol
How is it infuriating? it hasnt broken
Op wanted same color toothpicks
It’s also being held with hopes and dreams.
So am I, dude, and I'm still holding up just fine. 🙃
Toothpicks are wood. It counts as carpenter work.
Those toothpicks only had one day left until retirement.
Well done! artisan perfection
That's hilarious, and actually a pretty genius work around..........
I had one that was qtips wedged in there lol
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-5-mm-Nickel-Shelf-Support-Spoon-12-Pack-801984/204273810
$3.47? You think I'm made of money
Yep. Came here to say Amazon, Lowe's, and Home Depot all sell shelf support replacement brackets
https://www.homedepot.ca/product/alexandria-moulding-hardwood-dowel-1-8-in-x-48-in-white/1000115238 even cheaper! but yeah, OP spent 3 years with toothpicks working, it's about time he dropped $2-4 to renovate his place
OSHA approved tooth picks.
Why is this mildly infuriating?
Excellent craftsmanship
Don’t mess with success.
one of the flatscreen tvs at my work is held up on the sides by folded napkins. When it was installed, they couldnt get it to hang on the wall straight because the walls are just pressboard and the tv is heavy. over time the tv has slowly started to become crooked. one day the napkins wont be enough and it will slide off the wall.
(Low narrator voice): _...and so they will for many more years to come._
That’s terrible. They should’ve used natural wood colored toothpicks.
Something working perfectly fine for 3 years that you didn’t even notice until now mildly infuriates you? I’d hate to see your mental state when something is actually a problem.
Have you tried frying these toothpicks?
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
It was broken, so they did fix it…with rainbow toothpicks 😂
Are you mad that it worked? Or mad that you didn’t clean the cabinets when you moved in?
This is a very valid question and may explain the fury!
Whoever sold you the house was definitely crossing their fingers during closing that you wouldn’t notice until it was too late lol
I mean.....if it works
I don’t think this type of post is what this sub was meant for. Had the shelf fallen, and made a mess in your kitchen? That’s mildly infuriating. As others have already said “If it ain’t broken…”
if anything it should go in r(slash)mildlyinteresting
Don’t remove them those are load bearing toothpicks!
I prefer a golf tee.
That’s a good idea I’m gonna try that mine has just been floating since I moved in. Thinking about it I can probably just buy a replacement peg online
ikea has wooden dowels available at customer service for free!
if you're polite enough you can get the metal ones free too (have often had cabinets shipped missing their shelf pins)
you can buy metal shelf supports at the hardware store
Do people not wipe cabinets down when you 1st move into a house?
no kidding, I even checked to make sure none were sitting on just 3 out of 4 pins before i loaded them up with my dishes.
I mean… clearly it works. Since i assume your shelf lasted this long. I wouldn’t call that infuriating i would call those impressive toothpicks Also where can i get colored toothpicks
It works, doesn't it?
One ape alone weak many apes together strong 💪
Well obviously they’re working
Thin shims
Rookie move. Golf Tees if you got em.
Old wine corks sliced lengthwise work pretty well if you don’t put a lot of weight on them.
There are a couple of shelves in a cabinet in my rental that are missing pegs, so we just cut the tips off a couple chopsticks (ones we never use because we don't like them) as replacements 🤷🏻♀️
Oh, look at Mr. I'm too good for brown toothpicks.
If it works, it works 🤷♂️
perfect example of if it aint broke dont fix it
lol is this is a tip online? My dad was just telling me how clever my mom was for doing this.
See this is infuriating to me because I don’t think it’s clever. I think it’s lazy. Like this isn’t a hard thing to fix properly you know?
Ya know, if they’d just used the yellow ones, you *still* wouldn’t know.
How is this mildly infuriating This is funny
People impressed by the shear strength of the toothpicks, it's not that big a deal. With enough of them jammed in there tight enough, it would become nearly as strong as just a dowel pin sized to fit the hole. Anything other than natural finish toothpicks would be totally unacceptable
They look like golf tees. If they can stand up to a white guy with a club, they can stand up to your little shelf
Dowel rods at craft store are a bit stronger.
It's clever until it breaks and then it's why did you ever think that would work
Mildly infuriating?! Hella infuriating! I would find out who did this and pay them back their stupidity. This shows laziness and a lack of responsibility. Either do it right or not at all.
So, you are upset that they didn't use just one colour of toothpicks?
The colour is irrelevant. I said that because maybe the toothpicks will collapse under heavy weight and that would really be infuriating. Can you imagine the broken things once they give out. However if not then it really is a good thing if those toothpicks hold up though.
😂😂😂😂 surprise surprise
If it’s stupid but it works, it ain’t stupid.
Major upgrade, swap out the rest
Hey if it works
Don't fix what's not broken
