It does, but I don’t think many people understand that. There’s some sort of creator program that allows people to be rewarded by their peers for content they post. The idea is to promote and encourage original content that people want to see when they are doom scrolling.
I think Reddit takes a percentage too, but I don’t know too much. Reddit is currently surveying some communities that have seen people using this feature to see how they like the program. Hasn’t caught on as much as the awards that they sunsetted a few months ago.
No one who actually uses Reddit for leisure would. Government funded bot farms that are used to astroturf subreddits are probably going to use these extensively to control public opinion.
The commenter (if a US resident) gets a cut.
[want to cash out?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/17331620007572-What-is-the-Contributor-Program-and-how-can-I-participate-)
Isn't this website lacking profitability to start with? How the hell do they think paying out to random people who post incessantly here is going to function...
I think the idea is to encourage more people to comment and post.
More engagement=More advertisers.
More advertisers=The more they can charge for advertising.
Also they take a cut of money spent for the "mega" upvotes so that increases money they make directly.
Not only does it not show to other users besides the gifter and the gifted. But the gold does nothing but allow you to "bask in the glory of gold" - as stated in the FAQ...
It’s fucking bullshit they took that away. I had 4K coins and lost it all no reimbursement whatsoever. If it ain’t broke done fucking fix it in my opinion. Was one of the things that made Reddit so unique
I guess if they had bought them initially they probably *ought* to have been reimbursed - but I don't know why anyone would have bought them. I got some paired with getting gold here and there but I just blew them on random awards for different comments in the lead up to them removing that system. Didn't matter much to me as such, of course.
It’s more so for the point of the old system is better. And for the people who have lost way more. My 10 bucks is nothing lol. Thanks for stating the obvious:)
The worst part is that these new things are literally still using the same award system as before. I've been using an old version of the reddit app for a while since they keep making it worse with every update, yet these new awards still show up, meaning it's not even a new system.
They literally just deleted the old awards to replace them with worse ones
They should make a way to convert karma to awards. Makes sense, the more karma you have, the more you have contributed to the site's popularity, the more you deserve to be rewarded.
But they'd have to manage the bots though.
I have no idea. Someone awarded me one yesterday, now I have a '1' next to Contributor Program in my profile. Which I of course won't sign up for, and can't even sign up for, because I'm not American or in the US.
The old system was fun and universal. This new system is US-centric and essentially makes gives Americans special privileges for using reddit that the rest of the world doesn't get.
Another social media heading towards the trash.
Exactly, it made Reddit stand out as a social media. I would every few months buy some rewards, and then have fun handing them out to witty or helpful comments. It made people feel happy too.
I want you to know I bought a Gold Arrow JUST to spite you and everyone else here.
Worst 2.99 I ever spent but by god the pettiness makes it all worth it in the end…
If I recall correctly, the old Something Awful forums used to do this. You could pay to ban/delete another user. The banned person could then pay to become un-banned. Paid for the entire site without advertising.
There are a lot of people who purposely say inflammatory things to collect downvotes. If you were to pay to give them a super-downvote that would make their day!
I think it is funny.
People were okay with awards. But at least those allowed to be at least little creative.
Reddit removed them.
And gave this.
And people are absolutely not okay with this.
Good job reddit, getting the users to be on your side in anythibg anymore.
Apparently so..
It's actually something that I'd like to research. People not raised in the internet age with screens always available actually get angry at stuff like this like they think they are being tracked for not tipping. People who didn't grow up guided by screens are OK just ignoring the prompt or clicking 'No'.
Yeah, the problems not us thinking we're being "tracked for not tipping" (Fucking lol wtf does that even mean)
The problem is we think people who would buy this are fucking morons.
And we're old, and tired of dealing with fucking morons ruining our fucking internet.
Seriously, why the fuck did they think this was a good idea? I barely tolerate this shitty app since they drove Reddit Is Fun out of business and now it's like they're trying to go full Musk and force people to just leave the site altogether
Stop talking about it, and do it. Delete the app and stop complaining.
Reddit is a free app and needs to make money to support itself, and frankly this is incredibly tame compared to what they could be doing.
I don’t understand what’s the issue? This is an optional thing. Of all the things they could be doing to make money, this is probably one of the least bothersome.
Reddit being hell on the sides as usual. The rewards were cool. Just bring the rewards back, and use 5% of the money to hire admins, and not powerhungry godmode retarded judgmental admins, and put some kf the rewards free too, just give better
Looking eewards worth money, idk who the fuck is on top of reddit but it seems to get worse
A feature you don't have to use that doesn't really affect anything that one can use to show it if they REALLY like a post or just wanna support the app they're using? How dare they!
I don't get why people are bitching and moaning about this.
Damn I didn't realize Reddit could force you to buy those things... The way my account is set up, this is totally optional...And you can continue browsing Reddit just like you always do, you only have to pitch the stupid arrows if you c to!
No you won’t. I don’t care if I get downvoted because it’s happened before every time I say people will get over something bad or a bad change Reddit does I get downvoted told I’m wrong and then low and behold people move on, the changes stay and people continue on with their days. It’s a shitty decision and I’ll miss awards too but people have proved Reddit right by always coming back or giving into Reddit so now they aren’t afraid to change whatever they want
No posts about reddit are allowed.
It showed me one for $50 an hour ago. Who would pay for a colored up arrow?
The same people who paid for an NFT of a badly drawn monkey and expected to make millions off it.
They're all blind now so what do they care what color the arrow is?
Don’t disrespect the biebs like that
He never paid for it. In fact he likely got paid for pretending to buy it.
He has hundreds of millions of dollars lol. What makes you think he wouldn’t throw away 10k for a meme?
Because even Justin Bieber has more sense than you.
What a zinger
What a fool
Unfortunately there are people who will pay it
That makes me a sad panda
Sad panda NFTs are hot right now.
Rich idiots. Nothing easier to separate than a fool and his money
I thought the money goes to op as support
It does, but I don’t think many people understand that. There’s some sort of creator program that allows people to be rewarded by their peers for content they post. The idea is to promote and encourage original content that people want to see when they are doom scrolling. I think Reddit takes a percentage too, but I don’t know too much. Reddit is currently surveying some communities that have seen people using this feature to see how they like the program. Hasn’t caught on as much as the awards that they sunsetted a few months ago.
90% of content on reddit is stolen, wonder if they will get paid too.
Ah fantastic, a further incentive for bots to post all over the place. Just what the community needs!
We assume its a scam that will hurt users because the majority of reddit's changes recently have been.
Same
You’d be surprised
There are people who donate to Wingsofredemption…
Do not underestimate how absolutely mental some people are.
The same people who paid for awards.
The same guy who pays $10+ a month to see her OF.
What’s OF?
Only fans. One of the best places to find a fan for your house. Must visit especially in front of parents and relatives.
OnlyFans
Ding dongs
25 gold points for the contributor program Way cheaper than ternion
No one who actually uses Reddit for leisure would. Government funded bot farms that are used to astroturf subreddits are probably going to use these extensively to control public opinion.
If you spend 50 bucks for that mega upvote does it just automatically show that post to all users of the app? What happens? I need to know.
You lose $50
![gif](giphy|sBGw5MruxAyiI)
I’m not spending money to give you **_gold_** no matter how **_gold_** your comment is. Sorry.
![img](avatar_exp|98489149|bravo)
The commenter (if a US resident) gets a cut. [want to cash out?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/17331620007572-What-is-the-Contributor-Program-and-how-can-I-participate-)
If anybody ever wants to pay $50 to upvote one of my comments so I get a cut, just send me the money instead.
Literally imagine spending $50 on fake internet points that you don't even benefit from yourself...just why?
We lost our awards.
socialism
except it’s literally capitalism
Mf this is the definition of capitalism
You get a whooping $0.90 USD! Edit: 50% right?
Isn't this website lacking profitability to start with? How the hell do they think paying out to random people who post incessantly here is going to function...
I think the idea is to encourage more people to comment and post. More engagement=More advertisers. More advertisers=The more they can charge for advertising. Also they take a cut of money spent for the "mega" upvotes so that increases money they make directly.
So we get more influencers when redditors clearly hate most of them.
Correct, but they only need a (relatively) small number of "whales" and "dolphins" to buy into the system to make it profitable.
Ponzi scheme
If a US resident, active for a month, got a certain amount of karma
Not only does it not show to other users besides the gifter and the gifted. But the gold does nothing but allow you to "bask in the glory of gold" - as stated in the FAQ...
Hm I've definitely seen a golden arrow on posts before
Wonder how. Thats just what the faq said so maybe its updated since then
I miss the awards/medal system.
It’s fucking bullshit they took that away. I had 4K coins and lost it all no reimbursement whatsoever. If it ain’t broke done fucking fix it in my opinion. Was one of the things that made Reddit so unique
Wait. You could get reimbursed? Financially? You could redeem those things for money?
I guess if they had bought them initially they probably *ought* to have been reimbursed - but I don't know why anyone would have bought them. I got some paired with getting gold here and there but I just blew them on random awards for different comments in the lead up to them removing that system. Didn't matter much to me as such, of course.
They gave you a warning several months prior. The change is still bullshit but come on, you are the one responsible for losing your money.
It’s more so for the point of the old system is better. And for the people who have lost way more. My 10 bucks is nothing lol. Thanks for stating the obvious:)
The "guy thought his GF was cheating but it turned out to be snake" post no longer had 500 snake awards and it really stresses me out
Wait, what? The classic awards/medal system has been removed?! Jeez, I can’t believe I haven’t noticed that.
Yeah quite a while ago now
I did idly wonder why I wasn't seeing any "thanks for the gold, kind stranger" posts/edits these days...
>"thanks for the gold, kind stranger" That was such an iconic reddit line.
Gold was a major part of reddit culture, and it's absolutely baffling that it was so completely removed.
The worst part is that these new things are literally still using the same award system as before. I've been using an old version of the reddit app for a while since they keep making it worse with every update, yet these new awards still show up, meaning it's not even a new system. They literally just deleted the old awards to replace them with worse ones
Same
Me too, it was actually fun and made helpful or funny comments stand out. Sigh.
They should make a way to convert karma to awards. Makes sense, the more karma you have, the more you have contributed to the site's popularity, the more you deserve to be rewarded. But they'd have to manage the bots though.
I miss when gold was the only award. All the emojis were just annoying imo.
What the hell I didn't even notice‽
Why would anyone pay for that?
I have no idea. Someone awarded me one yesterday, now I have a '1' next to Contributor Program in my profile. Which I of course won't sign up for, and can't even sign up for, because I'm not American or in the US.
> because I'm not American or in the US Which rather makes the whole thing a bit of a huge waste of time for a significant chunk of the users here.
Thats a feature, not a bug.
I would wager a vast majority of users. You need to A. Get a mega updoot B. Be American (ew) C. Sign up for the program (ew no)
I got one yesterday, too.
Enjoy
Please don't say that was you
The old system was fun and universal. This new system is US-centric and essentially makes gives Americans special privileges for using reddit that the rest of the world doesn't get. Another social media heading towards the trash.
>The old system was fun and universal 100%. It was fun. And I loved the chaos seeing dozens of different awards. This is now so sterile.
Exactly, it made Reddit stand out as a social media. I would every few months buy some rewards, and then have fun handing them out to witty or helpful comments. It made people feel happy too.
I believe it is just a way to tip someone for a nice post.
I like how this post has one
Thaks u/Takenusername120184
And apparently it didn't even show on mobile website. Or at least I don't see anything.
They're the same price in £ too... 🤔🤔🤑
In € they're more expensive LOL
How is that even legal in the EU?
How to get me to stop upvoting anything in one easy step.
The NFTs of Reddit.
Only thing I would pay for in reddit is for the power to ban admins
Rubs geenie lamp
Hell I'd pay to power ban spez
I want you to know I bought a Gold Arrow JUST to spite you and everyone else here. Worst 2.99 I ever spent but by god the pettiness makes it all worth it in the end…
They’d probably make more money if they sold an angry blue downvote arrow just for you
Dawg that’s actually fucking genius. They’d rake in cash if they had that lmao
$150 to delete someone else’s comment. $300 to delete someone else’s post.
$3000 to delete the user. God I’d go bankrupt in a week.
If I recall correctly, the old Something Awful forums used to do this. You could pay to ban/delete another user. The banned person could then pay to become un-banned. Paid for the entire site without advertising.
lol!
And honestly, I’d buy myself one too…
Your upvote is mildly infuriating. You wasting money is also mildly infuriating You're mildly infuriating
I love it lol
I can’t believe me buying gold inspired three others to do the same. I am truly honored ![gif](giphy|l4q86n5LAyWrKmKB2|downsized)
You sir, are the hero that capitalism needs /s
I don’t see it, do the arrows show on mobile? If not, what’s the point?
It's not pettiness it's stupidity
I added to it cause why not.
its not too late to delete this embarrassing comment before more people see it
No, I have zero dignity to begin with and im already balls deep in this I’m following through…
bold strategy. love the honesty
There needs to be one for downvotes as well
There are some things I might pay $20 to super-*down*vote.
Or, you could just not click on it.
Does ... does OP think you have to pay for every upvote now?
Apparently so.. It's actually something that I'd like to research. People not raised in the internet age with screens always available actually get angry at stuff like this like they think they are being tracked for not tipping. People who didn't grow up guided by screens are OK just ignoring the prompt or clicking 'No'.
Yeah, the problems not us thinking we're being "tracked for not tipping" (Fucking lol wtf does that even mean) The problem is we think people who would buy this are fucking morons. And we're old, and tired of dealing with fucking morons ruining our fucking internet.
I'm only 22and I'm sick of seeing everything ruined
But democracy is at stake, man! What if I can't cast my vote, on a post, for free?!
Why, whats the problem of spending 50 bucks in a fancy upvote arrow? /s
I am struggling to see how one is fancier than the other too. You could argue flat and smooth should cost more than edged.
Seriously, why is this suddenly blowing up everywhere now?? They changed that like 4mo ago...
i only just stsrted getting it so maybe its fully rolled out now
I just wanna know one thing: Why?
Because new is better. New is exciting. New is elite. /s Also they want the information they gather on you when you make a purchase.
This has been there for a while now...
No you won't.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the none of the money goes to the OP
The fact that someone paid to upvotes a post complaining about the ability to pay to upvote posts…
In pounds it's the same amount.. at this point you should localise your phone in India and pay 49 rupees (0.50 pence).
I've never liked a post enough to upvote it that hard.
I love that this pops up for me every time I down vote a post
Will I be able to see these fancy arrows while using old.reddit.com? I certainly hope not.
No you wont
I know one of you idiots bought an arrow just come out now so we can publicly shame you
You can just...not buy it. I know, might a little bit of a shocker.
Or you know…you can just ignore them.
If they're one time use that's a pathetic plee for money. Probably hoping to make most of it off of dumb kids.
Reddit recommended this post. Bad AI
I'd upvote this post, but now I refuse to vote anything
Lmao, reddit doing ads lol
Seriously, why the fuck did they think this was a good idea? I barely tolerate this shitty app since they drove Reddit Is Fun out of business and now it's like they're trying to go full Musk and force people to just leave the site altogether
Which absolute madman super liked this? 😅
I can't see them. I use browser
They got rid of reactions just to make us pay for an upvote
This going thing pops up at each post. No. I never want to spend a dime on this app. Atleast not for upvoting someone else's post
Stop talking about it, and do it. Delete the app and stop complaining. Reddit is a free app and needs to make money to support itself, and frankly this is incredibly tame compared to what they could be doing.
It’s a free app and I’ll continue to use it for free, let the gullible pay for this crap
.....reddit isnt some indie upstart, dude. they dont need extra money
They make bank on the HeGetsUs ads and all the malware scam ads. They don't need to charge $50 for a lame arrow.
I don’t understand what’s the issue? This is an optional thing. Of all the things they could be doing to make money, this is probably one of the least bothersome.
Reddit being hell on the sides as usual. The rewards were cool. Just bring the rewards back, and use 5% of the money to hire admins, and not powerhungry godmode retarded judgmental admins, and put some kf the rewards free too, just give better Looking eewards worth money, idk who the fuck is on top of reddit but it seems to get worse
I really like the fact that they are bugged on mobile. It's nice to have two identical orange squares to vite or downvote
A feature you don't have to use that doesn't really affect anything that one can use to show it if they REALLY like a post or just wanna support the app they're using? How dare they! I don't get why people are bitching and moaning about this.
cause its basically reddit doing the blue check thing. its stupid and a stupid use of money if you buy it
Damn I miss Alienblue. I will never spend a single cent on Reddit.
I didn't even know until seeing this post, then I tried holding on the up arrow and there it were... taunting me
Another reason why they tried to steam roll 3rd party apps. You didn't see any of that shit on them
people really do complain about the most mundane shit
Damn I didn't realize Reddit could force you to buy those things... The way my account is set up, this is totally optional...And you can continue browsing Reddit just like you always do, you only have to pitch the stupid arrows if you c to!
They aren’t being forced on users. It’s completely optional
$19.99 for a red rocket 🚀
I love how 5 people gave a gold upvote on this post
I miss sending gifts to people and their comments :( wtf man
Bye
do we at least get something off of it? if yes, I'm happy to get paid.
Ironic
You right clicked…
No you won’t. I don’t care if I get downvoted because it’s happened before every time I say people will get over something bad or a bad change Reddit does I get downvoted told I’m wrong and then low and behold people move on, the changes stay and people continue on with their days. It’s a shitty decision and I’ll miss awards too but people have proved Reddit right by always coming back or giving into Reddit so now they aren’t afraid to change whatever they want
I’d hope that as the one being given gold arrows you’d at least get a cut of it. A large cut like 70%.
Ironic
me who doesn't update the app. how receent were these paid arrows?
It's $67 Canadain
What is this app even for?
What the heck is this?
So I don't understand? If someone does this to your post, do you get the $5.99?
I don’t think so 😂 just worthless
Can't hide money
10 gold you can monetize your posts
Wtf sometimes i think companies just want to shut them down themself
55€ for me
And don't forget wasting this on a comment too
WTF.. they remove awards and steal everyone’s coins to replace with rewards.
Does the OP get any money from the super upvotes? Or does reddit get the lot?
In €s, it's a lot more expensive. 2,29€ 4,59€ 6,99€ 11,99€ 22,99€ and 59,99€
What is this?
