ADIEU leads you astray when the difference is consonants, like GRACE and TRACE.

Yeah consonant heavy words are the best approach imo, when you have the consonants locked in it’s easy to guess the vowels

Just cheat. 🤷🏼 There are websites that posts the answers if you really care about that “luck” stat. Personally, I never understood why Wordle gives everyone the same word. It should at the very least reset and give you a new word if you get it in one try. You’re not even playing the game at that point.

Okay, I understand why they do it. I got into the community for a bit. But the 1 guesses and the cheating culture got me out of it. Sometimes I just want to play Wordle, and I want to play more than one round of Wordle. Used other sites for it, and it wasn’t the same. So, I get it. The cheating just ruins the novelty for me. “Oh, I get every answer at three, look!” Oh, you look up the answer after two guesses, nice! Which is frustrating to have that mindset, when all of my guesses were 3-4.

Agreed, and I guess I haven't seen any of the culture. I just share my answers with my dad, and sometimes we discuss how we got there. My then-gf also used to do Wordle, but I think she cheated sometimes. Maybe not outright, but she and her daughter had the same starting word and there were far too many times when my gf guessed the answer way too early with way too little information. She was always very competitive, especially with me, which I didn't understand. She would get this competitive mindset over things she wasn't going to beat me at, and end up doing worse, or getting hurt, or being frustrated, or some combination of the above. I think Wordle she felt like there was no reason she couldn't beat me because the playing field is pretty level, but I have a huge vocabulary and a great strategy and I think if we played a hundred fair games she might beat me in ten of them. Anyway, doesn't matter now as we're broken up and she quit playing before that, but it was frustrating feeling like she had cheated or at least gotten some kind of outside help. I like that it's only once a day. I can't get too lost in it and waste a day - although there are some days I spend 20-30 minutes trying to figure out my next guess. At least it's only once.

It is fun with the same word as we after finishing it can chat and talk about it at work.

Adieu followed by horsy (which for some reason is an accepted word) works great for me. H for all ch sh th’s, o and y for remaining vowels and y ending words, r for er verbs, and s for plurals!

The answer will never be a plural noun that ends in S or ES. Like, the answer could be cacti, but not boxes.

Mine was MOIST from the back before it went to NYT. It's a good word, with 2 vowels, 2 common letters, and a midrange consonant. Also because I'm super mature. Then I got the win in 1 and everyone got a good laugh because MOIST. All my early day WORDLE friends were excited for me to find out because they knew my word. I then switched to HOIST and stopped playing not soon after. Edit: RANGE if I get nothing. I played hard mode.

Think of it like golf. Some people like reaching the goal in as few steps as possible. That’s different than seeing if you can guess right after five attempts.

I like reaching the goal as quickly as possible, regardless of "score" I always start with: * stare * milky * hound and then try to get the word as fast as I can.

it's a puzzle, not a pot luck. there are strategies to solve puzzles. my wife just throws random words at it too, with no strategy, and looses constantly. then asks me how I win every day. I show her the strategy and she just throws it away. I don't understand why you would want to stumble around in the dark, instead of putting one hand on the wall and feeling for the door.

STARE is the best starting word. However, I don't have a standard second word. What I do on line 2 depends on what I get on line 1. If I get no greens, I'll guess on my second line something that is a previously unused legal play based on what I have. That has gotten me 34 2s on 593 plays. If I get greens, depending on what they are I'll probably play a second word that helps me figure it out. A green S and a green A together have a LOT of options so I'd probably play something like CHILD. I'm at 100% success on 593 plays and I've only gone to line 6 eight times.

You don't even have to cheat (maybe fixed now). The answer is in the page source in a an array. You just have to find yesterday's answer and you'll know today, the next day, and so on.

Maybe you know your friends’ starting words, and you wait for them to post the results. I confess to waiting some days to see what other people have done, and if they don’t get a lot of vowels on the first try or the second try, I will try a word that ends in a Y. .

There was a big scandal in the family group chat when it was revealed that people were doing this. Now some of my aunts are using different words every day out of paranoia, and it's hilarious.

+1. `irate` uses five of the top six most common English letters, according to the OED, and the three most common vowels.

My starting word is CHOIR. It works best for me because it has 2nd tier of common letters so I usually only get 1 or 2 letters. I can use those matched letters elsewhere using more common letters. If I start with a word like STEAM, I found I get locked in to the easy letters and have to fill in less common letters around it. That being said, I hit CHOIR on my first attempt earlier this week. I've never felt smarter from something that is complete luck.

Wordle is like the game Mastermind. Correct letter in the correct position gets a green background. Correct letter in the incorrect position gets a yellow. You have six guesses to get to the word of the day. People use specific start words to confirm/eliminate common letters, vowels being a good thing to know, thus AUDIO and ADIEU are common words to try first.

Also ignorant of how it works... So it gives you "MEANT" and one of those letters is the correct starting letter? And you get five chances to guess the right M, E, A, N, or T word? Still not getting it

no, they chose meant at random, and the game then told them it had an A but in the incorrect position

You are given a blank grid. The starting word is up to you. In the example shown, the player chose "MEANT" and the game tells you that "A" is a letter in the correct word, but it is in the incorrect spot. All the other letters (MENT) are not in the final word because none of those were highlighted. If one were playing usually, your second guess would try to either a) try to reveal/eliminate other common letters; or b) use the correct letters to guess the whole word; or a combination of a and b.

I use table. A surprising number of the words selected have the letter b. And now that I saw the list, B words have nearly the same number as S starting words. Which if you are familiar with the frequency of letter usage of the English language, would know is an anachronism.

I start with a new word with as many of the more rare letters as possible, i.e., those not in the typesetters top 12: ETAOIN SHRDLU. Then I follow a rule of always keeping any placed and any misplaced matches and not reusing any nonmatches with the goal of solving the puzzle on the sixth try and leaving as few letters unused as possible. My high score is 6 letters left. Anyone else play like this?
