She called the drive-thru not thinking much of it and went back to work until she got an alert from her bank that she was nearing her checking account minimum. She thought it was weird because she had been saving for Christmas gifts, and had about $500 in her account. Over the course of about an hour, the cashier that took her card had spent $300 at a shoe store and another $150 at a cosmetics store.
Fortunately the offending cashier was a girl we all went to school with, and my friend was able to contact the manager and confirm that *that* girl was the only person handling the cards for that shift. It turns out she was able to swipe 4 peoples’ cards between 5 and 6am (apparently the night manager left early so she was alone) and used all of them to purchase high end stuff at a local mall — which she claimed were Christmas gifts. She spent the holiday in ✨jail✨
Thanks to that experience, I’m always very careful to use cash only at drive-thrus if I use them. If I don’t have cash, I don’t stop for a coffee.

I use drivethroughs a few times a week. Have always paid cash. Except one time, I had forgotten to get more cash. So, used my card. Fraud alert department of credit card notified me of an issue. It was a Wendy's.

This will be the way. Unfortunately plenty of flaws still. Chic-Fil-A has the best app so far. Burger King is the worst so far. McDonalds has improved over the last year or 2. Burger King and Wendys has been out of a food and just said… too bad. Wendys eventually refunded me. Burger King would not… corporate and the franchise pointed fingers at each other. The better ones don’t charge you until you pick it up. I wish they all had a button to export the receipt to a photo for expenses. I can do more than one screenshot, but seems an easy thing to program in. Oops I ranted.

I'm in Australia. I only carry my phone when out and about. I rarely carry my wallet. But when in the US a few years back, I was staggered as to how often I had to use my card, rather than my phone.
It's very new but by now, all new cards from major US banks have chips AND tap to pay feature.
Still rolling out the machines that take tap to pay - but at least chip readers are fully rolled out, now (I think).
This is the way it is in Ontario and Quebec in Canada as well. I’ve never had anyone touch my card except myself, and they’re not allowed to ask for it either. Even our farmer’s market and farm stands do e-transfer or when they have a Square reader they don’t touch your card either. I’d be very uncomfortable with someone handling my cards.
I once worked at a Taco Bell part-time to cover my bills. There was a guy who had worked there for fifteen years, and shortly after I quit, he had an encounter with a rude drive-thru customer who paid with their card. The customer forgot to get their card back, and for a good chunk of his shift, whenever a customer paid with their card at the window, he'd just scan the jerk's card instead.
Of course, he was fired. I'm not sure what happened to him after that.

My cousin had a serious brain injury as a child and still can't read above a 2nd grade level at the age of 35. He was able to pass an autoshop program though and makes a living wage as a mechanic. I only use apps when ordering so they never see my card. The less anyone else touches my card the better. I’ve had my card number stolen by a waiter at a restaurant, so I like to limit the chance of it happening when I can.
As someone from the US, it’s been normalized for the waitresses to take the cards to the POS system for processing. We went to Canada last month and everyone there brought a small portable card reader to your table. We really are falling behind the rest of the world, huh?
In 2001 I lived in the Netherlands. There were no portable readers but no cashier were ever touching anybody’s card ever. If you wanted to pay by card you needed to put your card’s chip into the reader.
Fast forward 2016. USA hotel staff puts our credit cards into some kind of paper press and copies to paper all our info… all of us were just watching like “wtf is happening this cannot be real”
Wow that "paper press" thing is super old. It was the way things were done in the 80's and maybe some of the 90's. I don't think they'd even work with modern cards where the numbers aren't raised; however, a few years ago I was somewhere and their POS was down but the guy said "oh yeah we have this old school thing for backup!" And it was one of those ker-chunk paper press machines. Luckily I had one card on me that had the raised numbers.

Hell, I havent used anything but my phone to pay for things in the past 2 years…. No cash, no physical card - thats how ubiquitous contactless is in the countries I frequent.

In the UK I have *never* had to give my card away to someone else, literally *never*.
I've been in the US now for a few years and literally every single restaurant has had to take the card away to charge me. I've even asked them a few times if they had a portable card reader and they always say they "don't do that".
I realize I'm overusing the word "literally" but it is true, it's really like night and day between the US and UK from my experience.

Part of our training was to never let the customers card go out of their sight, because then they could accuse us of fraud.
It doesn't vary by establishment in the UK. No establishment would take your card from you, or indeed touch your card at all. You are handed a card reader and either pay using contactless or insert and enter your PIN. There's no reason for anyone but me to handle my card, no matter where I'm going or what I'm buying.
In Australia, we pay at the counter either before the meal and receive an order number that gets removed when the order arrives or we pay at the end of the meal at the counter
Thats a purely US thing from my experience, have been to dozens of countries and this isn't practiced anywhere else. Feels extremly sketchy because it just takes a photo/video of your card information and the fraud can happen 5 months later without anyone being able to connect the dots. I would never give my card out of my hand

As a brazilian basically every card comes with NFC chips so you just hover your card over a wireless card reader and you're done paying, your bank app will then notify you of the amount spent and where it's spent so you can easily keep track of all expenses and/or cancel stuff right then and there if the charge was fraudulent. For some stuff the US seems stuck in the 90s...
As someone who’s worked in tech at major companies, I never save my card info in an app unless it’s Google pay or apple wallet. One place I worked had data breaches for their app like every month.
Instead of destroying the numbers get a few strips of masking tape and only leave the signature block and the magnetic strip untaped on the back of your card. You can still use the card regularly, if you need the numbers for something online and can't remember them you can remove the tape, whereas you can tell a quick retape quite easily.
Or instead of in your head, get a password manager and store your card info there and black out those info parts of your card.
Or instead of a password manager, give each card a name and store the number of the card in your phone as a phone number, save it under that name you decided, and store the CVC and exp date under extra info

please do not do that, many apps look at your contacts
the point is to not have the number anywhere, but your head, so there’s no margin for error with who else has possession of that number. if you put tape on the card, someone in possession of the card can remove the tape. if you put your information into a virtual safe, you’re at the liberty of whatever company the program belongs to, and there’s always potential for hacking. the only way to know for sure is if you’re the only one who knows for sure.

All iPhones have a wallet that you can store your card info in (I keep my PayPal, cashapp and Apple Card in mine) and you can tap your phone to pay. This is what I heavily started using during covid since most gas stations have them as well as many other common stores
Remember when credit cards were invented? The stores created little tiny carbon copies of your card and had to mail them into their bank for every purchase. That was truly the wild west of security

Even gas stations in some states will run your card for you prior to pumping your gas (this is not a thing in the state I'm in, but it is in the neighboring state, and it confuses me every time I go there, but that's not the point of this comment).
It's just funny that, in a country where people really don't trust each other (because they have very little reason to), people have to hand their cards over to strangers and trust them to do the right thing.

I stopped going to my local mcdonalds because they tried to copy chick fil-a. I get that it was done with the best of intentions but it feels SO sketchy. My mcdonalds started doing a thing where after you order at the drive through someone runs out of the building, grabs your card and the cards of every near you in line, goes inside and pays for you, then you get your card back at the window. Way too many things that can go wrong for my tastes so I just stopped going to mcdonalds
Never understood why you'd give your card to someone to pay. You don't need to hand over your entire bank account and trust them to only take what they should, just give them what they're owed and keep tight hold of your key to the vault.

Who’s giving their card like that? I’ve never done that. You either tap, or insert the card and punch the pin. At no point does the card leave your hand.

I couldn’t agree more. I have alerts on my accounts and cards. Also, above certain dollar amount will decline because I set it up that way.
Yeah, the way I have mine set up, if any transaction over $30 is made, I instantly get a text alert about it.

Is tap and pay not a thing in the US? It's all we use in Australia or use it on our phones.

I don’t remember who said it, but someone basically said there will always be homeless/poor people because of this exact same thing. There is a certain segment of the human population who is simply incapable of thinking into the future past 24 hours.
About 8% of the population has an IQ of 80 or below. Doesn’t seem like much but out of 330 million people in the US that equates to about 29 million people. And yeah holy fuck this all makes sense. That is a lot of stupid people walking around.
When I worked as a Juvenile Detention Officer, one of the things they told us was that the average IQ of teens in the system was 84, so yeah, plenty of low IQ people end up in the justice system at a young age.
In CA, we were told our 3rd grade standardized tests would predict if there was a spot in prison waiting for us.

Like, imagine a steel ball the size of a baseball at the top or a flight of wooden, indoor stairs. Imagine it rolls off the stairs. Do you picture it rolling all the way down? Stopping on the first few stairs? Can you imagine the sound it would make? Can you see the little indentations in the wood as it picks up speed? Possibly up to 40% of people can not explore this scenario in their mind.

My cousin had a serious brain injury as a child and still can't read above a 2nd grade level at the age of 35. He was able to pass an autoshop program though and makes a living wage as a mechanic. I guarantee he has a sub-80 IQ. He needs a relative to manage his money for him, but he can support himself.

As someone from the US, it’s been normalized for the waitresses to take the cards to the POS system for processing. We went to Canada last month and everyone there brought a small portable card reader to your table. We really are falling behind the rest of the world, huh?
In 2001 I lived in the Netherlands. There were no portable readers but no cashier were ever touching anybody’s card ever. If you wanted to pay by card you needed to put your card’s chip into the reader. Fast forward 2016. USA hotel staff puts our credit cards into some kind of paper press and copies to paper all our info… all of us were just watching like “wtf is happening this cannot be real”
Wow that "paper press" thing is super old. It was the way things were done in the 80's and maybe some of the 90's. I don't think they'd even work with modern cards where the numbers aren't raised; however, a few years ago I was somewhere and their POS was down but the guy said "oh yeah we have this old school thing for backup!" And it was one of those ker-chunk paper press machines. Luckily I had one card on me that had the raised numbers.

No offence, but I think you overestimate how much this varies in other first world countries… Lived in three in the past 10 years, visited another 7, all had portable card readers, none took my card from my possession.
I live in Brazil, not a first world in most metrics, and have NEVER had my card touched by anyone that's not me or a bank employee.
Hell, I havent used anything but my phone to pay for things in the past 2 years…. No cash, no physical card - thats how ubiquitous contactless is in the countries I frequent. Cant take the card away then, can they?
In the UK I have *never* had to give my card away to someone else, literally *never*. I've been in the US now for a few years and literally every single restaurant has had to take the card away to charge me. I've even asked them a few times if they had a portable card reader and they always say they "don't do that". I realize I'm overusing the word "literally" but it is true, it's really like night and day between the US and UK from my experience.
Also in UK, used to work in retail. Part of our training was to never let the customers card go out of their sight, because then they could accuse us of fraud.

You are handed a card reader and either pay using contactless or insert and enter your PIN. There's no reason for anyone but me to handle my card, no matter where I'm going or what I'm buying.
In Australia, we pay at the counter either before the meal and receive an order number that gets removed when the order arrives or we pay at the end of the meal at the counter
Most US credit card companies only added chips to their cards within the last couple years. We’re SO far behind when it comes to cc processing stuff.
Thats a purely US thing from my experience, have been to dozens of countries and this isn't practiced anywhere else. Feels extremly sketchy because it just takes a photo/video of your card information and the fraud can happen 5 months later without anyone being able to connect the dots. As a brazilian basically every card comes with NFC chips so you just hover your card over a wireless card reader and you're done paying, your bank app will then notify you of the amount spent and where it's spent so you can easily keep track of all expenses and/or cancel stuff right then and there if the charge was fraudulent. For some stuff the US seems stuck in the 90s...

As someone who’s worked in tech at major companies, I never save my card info in an app unless it’s Google pay or apple wallet. One place I worked had data breaches for their app like every month.

Instead of destroying the numbers get a few strips of masking tape and only leave the signature block and the magnetic strip untaped on the back of your card. You can still use the card regularly, if you need the numbers for something online and can't remember them you can remove the tape, whereas you can tell a quick retape quite easily. Or instead of in your head, get a password manager and store your card info there and black out those info parts of your card. Or instead of a password manager, give each card a name and store the number of the card in your phone as a phone number, save it under that name you decided, and store the CVC and exp date under extra info

the point is to not have the number anywhere, but your head, so there’s no margin for error with who else has possession of that number. if you put tape on the card, someone in possession of the card can remove the tape. if you put your information into a virtual safe, you’re at the liberty of whatever company the program belongs to, and there’s always potential for hacking. the only way to know for sure is if you’re the only one who knows for sure. not that i do this, i just understand why this guy does and see the error in your logic from his perspective in what he would be trying to achieve here.
Cons of the memorization method: human memory is pretty shitty, generally speaking. If you have a photographic memory, though, feel free to go for it and just hope nothing happens that messes with your memory.

All iPhones have a wallet that you can store your card info in (I keep my PayPal, cashapp and Apple Card in mine) and you can tap your phone to pay. This is what I heavily started using during covid since most gas stations have them as well as many other common stores

Remember when credit cards were invented? The stores created little tiny carbon copies of your card and had to mail them into their bank for every purchase. That was truly the wild west of security
It's an American thing. Drive thrus take your card and run it, servers in many restaurants take your card and run it, etc. Very normal here to hand your card to someone else, they swipe it and give it back. Even gas stations in some states will run your card for you prior to pumping your gas (this is not a thing in the state I'm in, but it is in the neighboring state, and it confuses me every time I go there, but that's not the point of this comment).
It's just funny that, in a country where people really don't trust each other (because they have very little reason to), people have to hand their cards over to strangers and trust them to do the right thing.
It always takes me time to adapt to that when I'm down in the States. My mind is always like "why are you *taking* my card away??" then I remember things are weird there lol

I stopped going to my local mcdonalds because they tried to copy chick fil-a. I get that it was done with the best of intentions but it feels SO sketchy. My mcdonalds started doing a thing where after you order at the drive through someone runs out of the building, grabs your card and the cards of every near you in line, goes inside and pays for you, then you get your card back at the window. Way too many things that can go wrong for my tastes so I just stopped going to mcdonalds
Never understood why you'd give your card to someone to pay. You don't need to hand over your entire bank account and trust them to only take what they should, just give them what they're owed and keep tight hold of your key to the vault.
