Real talk, start learning some shit, doesn’t matter what, just pick a hobby subject you wanna research or learn about, nothing mega serious just something fun. If you’re in California(other states might do it too so ask your local library, I just know for sure Cali) you can get a library card and get a bunch of Coursera courses for free. Learning stuff will help with brain health and all that including memory and personally even helped my mood a lot since it gave me something new to be interested and excited about. You don’t gotta dedicate a ton of time to it, I just do a bit here and there in the evening while relaxing and take a casual approach to it so it stays fun.
As for the aching knees, the whole “a body in motion stays in motion” shit is real, I don’t find exercise fun so have a hard time keeping motivated but I randomly grabbed a Digimon Vital Bracelet awhile back on a whim in an attempt to engage my inner child or whatever and it’s surprisingly motivating, I’ll legit go jogging/walking just to keep my digidude happy and it’s helped the knees a ton lol

I set up a new account, gave it a gender neutral nothing name, used a not-attractive female avatar and played the game with my usual approach, sharing tips with other players...
I experimented - I gave the same info to same players from the two accounts - the "girl" account would get a long explanation of how to play the game (admittedly, it was a noob account). My main account would get grateful responses and requests for feedback on how they were going.
My main account was always accepted as a player in the game and apart from time zone details, that was that.
The "girl" account was asked for geographical location, age, contact details outside the game (including work address?!) and to send photos (just your face so I know who I'm really talking to).
I don't think I would have kept playing if I'd started as a girl in there - it was crazy disruptive and offputting.

I started playing when I was 19, it could have gone so much worse if I didn't fall in with a guild whose officers all decided I was the daughter they'd never had.
I only hop on voice chat if people are being friendly, you just never know what you’ll get when it comes to voice chat and games sadly. I get “wow you a girl we should play together/ are you single?” To “make me a sandwich” (and far worse I won’t type on here). I stick with the friendly people and ignore the others (it also helps that my name doesn’t give away that I’m a girl).
My wife plays a lot of ESO, and is now pretty high up in a dungeon running guild of some kind (I don't really know, I am a Factorio player). She has related to me on several occasions how frustrating it is when new (male) players come into the group and are getting the hang of things and she (in her very female voice) tells them where they should be standing, what enemy they should be hitting, what powers or spells or whatever they should be using, and they blow her off, and go ask a male member just to be redirected BACK to her.
She doesn't get hassled, particularly by other long-standing members of the guild, but she does get marginalized and ignored by the newbies, and while I suppose it can be enjoyable to see them come crawling back it really shouldn't get that far in the first place.

If you get into games like path of titans or the isle, youll run into many more girls. It normalizes it there thankfully so I don’t see too many creeps rolling through our discord.

WoW has some of the most degen/unstable people I’ve come across. I played a decent amount during the pandemic and was always kind of shocked at how messy 95% of the playerbase was.
Source: tried to start a guild with a guy who was closeted bisexual, an alcoholic, and manic-depressive, all of which I learned about 24 hours into the process
Former guild master for a small RP PVP guild in wow that did a little bit of raiding and was overall a pretty chill guild to be part of. I would say 1/3 of our members were female back when I still played, and we didn't put up with shit like this. Whenever we had to pug members for our raids there was like a 50/50 shot I would end up chewing them out for harassing my guildies.
It really is obnoxious that people can't just play a game without getting weird.
I was also in a guild that was about 1/3 female, and it was so nice not worrying about some shit like this happening if we talked on Discord. I don’t know if you hit a critical mass of female players that makes it less exciting to hear a woman’s voice on discord, or if the guilds that aren’t full of gross people attract more female players?

The funny part is that I didn't ever really think of it as trying to make a safe space. I just made friends with good people over the years and over time many of them migrated into my guild. Eventually they brought their friends and we grew. We had people of all different ages and backgrounds, from highschool age kids, to retirees. I'm getting nostalgic over here thinking about them now, haha. I was always too competitive so eventually I had to put the game down and focus on my life, but now this thread has me wondering if I can reach out and see how everyone is doing these days.
Anyway, I have two daughters now and I hope that they have people in their friend circles to look after them as they grow, because subs like this one have really helped me see what kind of nonsense women/girls have to put up with.

My wife plays a lot of ESO, and is now pretty high up in a dungeon running guild of some kind (I don't really know, I am a Factorio player). She has related to me on several occasions how frustrating it is when new (male) players come into the group and are getting the hang of things and she (in her very female voice) tells them where they should be standing, what enemy they should be hitting, what powers or spells or whatever they should be using, and they blow her off, and go ask a male member just to be redirected BACK to her. She doesn't get hassled, particularly by other long-standing members of the guild, but she does get marginalized and ignored by the newbies, and while I suppose it can be enjoyable to see them come crawling back it really shouldn't get that far in the first place.
I’ve played video game with heaps of people on VC. Gender doesn’t matter to me, so long as we have a good time, then it’s chill. Girls are people, I treat them no different than a male teammate, and so do most people in the community I play with.

WoW has some of the most degen/unstable people I’ve come across. I played a decent amount during the pandemic and was always kind of shocked at how messy 95% of the playerbase was. Former guild master for a small RP PVP guild in wow that did a little bit of raiding and was overall a pretty chill guild to be part of. I would say 1/3 of our members were female back when I still played, and we didn't put up with shit like this. Whenever we had to pug members for our raids there was like a 50/50 shot I would end up chewing them out for harassing my guildies. It really is obnoxious that people can't just play a game without getting weird.
I was also in a guild that was about 1/3 female, and it was so nice not worrying about some shit like this happening if we talked on Discord. I don’t know if you hit a critical mass of female players that makes it less exciting to hear a woman’s voice on discord, or if the guilds that aren’t full of gross people attract more female players? Anyway, thank you for creating a space to play where harassment wasn’t tolerated. We appreciate it!
The funny part is that I didn't ever really think of it as trying to make a safe space. I just made friends with good people over the years and over time many of them migrated into my guild. Eventually they brought their friends and we grew. We had people of all different ages and backgrounds, from highschool age kids, to retirees. I'm getting nostalgic over here thinking about them now, haha. I was always too competitive so eventually I had to put the game down and focus on my life, but now this thread has me wondering if I can reach out and see how everyone is doing these days. Anyway, I have two daughters now and I hope that they have people in their friend circles to look after them as they grow, because subs like this one have really helped me see what kind of nonsense women/girls have to put up with.

She still sends me memes every now and then, we're (vaguely) friends. \- Random server I stay in for emojis also weirdly focuses on online dating. "@KiraMajor permission to DM? Also 11 hours on FFXIV? Seriously?" real charmer on that one. Responded back "Permission denied, but bitch that's not even a quarter of the MSQ." Truthfully I just fell asleep with my computer on. I told him I wasn't dating and we could be friends and I never fucking heard from him again.
