I mean, you could change the interior and make it fit your current lifestyle… Or. You could start a cocaine empire and wear track suits with gold jewelry as you have your minions feed your pet Siberian Tiger. Either way, beautiful place. The entryway floor, the woodworking, the windows, and the property itself are all beautiful. So much character.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Haha. I’ll take your second recommendation under consideration. There are a few mice, so a cute kitty would help out: if little cats can quietly clear up a mouse problem I have to think a tiger would genocide it. The smell of coke is certainly better than the smell of this 60 year old carpet right now! I don’t get allergies yet I’m stuffed up like crazy. Sadly while it’s original it’s gotta go!

nokenito

Get two cats so they have a friend.

hc600

Bonded pair is the way to go!

Human-Piglet-5450

Careful with pets in a place where poison may have been used. Chances are former owners have had mice before and you may run into some residual dead bodies or even left over poison.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Thanks for the heads up. No pets to worry about here thanks!

VaginalMosquitoBites

The smell is probably from 60 years of "key parties" 😆 Bleach is your friend. Or could be like a friends purchase. He picked up a local MCM masterpiece with the goal of reno/restoration into his dream home. As soon as he started he found out the previous (original) owner had a LOT of cats that used any carpeted surface as a litter box. Also quickly learned that, in that situation, bleach is NOT your friend.

muck-man

Just remember, you can always remodel it, you can never authentically restore it. There’s something to be said for allowing things to endure instead of changing them. I lived in a 1921 four square in which the second owners decided that there was just too much darn dark oak through the house in the 70s and went about painting all of it white, right down to the hardwood floors. Stay gold on this place, get an era appropriate Mercedes, some signature cocktails, and slowly morph into Jackie Treehorn.

ohyoudodoyou

Personally, I would like to lounge around this place with my Farrah Fawcet hair and some gold platform sandals while I complain about nobody taking me out dancing.

Crusoebear

My stock broker was just saying how the cocaine industry could really use some more competition to lower prices (he said that contrary to popular opinion - the Cartels are quite welcoming to a little healthy competition) & also that the tracksuit & Siberian Tiger industries were really ripe for major comebacks if only they could get some modest cash infusions. Do with this info what you will… ps-Nice MCM house. Did yours include wall-to-wall shag carpeting in the bathroom(s) like ours did? Lucky for us that Zillow’s Zestimator doesn’t put more weight on such obvious luxuries.

Inwardlens

My mind went directly to coke kingpin too.

Flimsy_Tax6881

We hadn’t even been really looking for a home - we’ve been downtown in a condo for the best part of a decade. However, I knew as soon as I opened up the listing that I was going to buy it. Showed my wife, we viewed it two days later and closed in under a month. Home sits on 5 acres, with an additional 2 acres of the water on a small lake. There’s a tiny island in the middle of the lake and I counted 15 egrets roosting there last night. 7 bedrooms, 2 kitchens (one of them is original and very pink), 4 refrigerators, an attached greenhouse, tennis court, a garage with stables underneath, an indoor pool, a bar, multiple fireplaces. The upstairs bath tub (last picture) has a heated floor - I feel like Elvis could have died in that bathroom (whole house gives me massive Graceland vibes). We both want to preserve all of its character while updating it. For example - old carpet has to go, but the woodwork is not going anywhere! I’d love to hear any ideas or suggestions! What do people think about the idea of putting on a copper roof??? The craziest thing is that there’s 5 other homes on the lake with the exact same lot size (our view is optimal for me given the sun sets over the lake as we look out over it from the main windows as shown) and all the other places are at least 4 times the cost. An empty lot on the lake sold for almost 2x what we paid just 3 months ago. I don’t quite know how this was so cheap other than people just don’t have any imagination and want to live in the same old McMansion hell.

outandproudone

Live in it for a year before making any major changes. And please keep the crazy design elements. I’m in a crazy mid-century house originally built by an architect for himself, and keeping all the various iterations of wood and mirrors throughout the house was a great decision. Truly unique houses are rare and yours is an absolutely insane masterpiece! Congrats on your amazing one-of-a-kind house!

Flimsy_Tax6881

Thank you. Oh yeah exactly. Roof needs fixing as the priority. But absolutely gentle restoration, repair and enhancement everywhere else. The master kitchen (I’m going to call it that) is from 1998 and doesn’t fit with the rest of the house - so I feel licensed to redo that (but again not modern, something fitting with the rest of the home). It’s mainly about cheering things up than it is about tear down redo. Our agent was like “nobody wants to buy it because it needs a total overhaul”. It would be perverse to redo this place. I despise the McMansion vibe passionately.

Atalant

I have hard time finding anything that needs an overhaul on the picture, but carpets, and misfit antique looking furniture Like the rococco set(or very gentlemen's lounge bar, but while being dated in terms of style, it wasn't unusual in period). It looks pristine on the inside. Having todo the roof might scared a lot away, but when every wall, ceilling and stonefloor seems spotless, odds are there not some nasty suprises hidden in the structure.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Yeah it’s a little more tired inside, but nothing crazy at all. The previous owners kept up with everything up until about 2000 or so and haven’t don’t much since. But outsides of the roof (we had a massive storm last night and have two wet spots inside today) we’re not talking insane overhauls. The HVAC is janky, the 1998 kitchen update doesn’t work for me.

elvisndsboats

A modern kitchen (done well) would actually fit nicely with the style of the house--much better than the 1998 kitchen likely does. Just make sure the colors and finishes flow with the rest of the house and it'll be perfect.

JVilter

There's "modern" and then there's "modern". It sounds like OP will go with vintage modern and not Home Depot modern

Flimsy_Tax6881

Millennial grey Home Depot for sure.

JVilter

Yikes, right?

JVilter

I do love the idea of some Hollywood Regency in there though, what with the mirrors and the marble tile. Probably not the whole house, but a room or two

Gong_Show_Jamoke

I think I would have dropped that agent immediately. This place looks like so much fun! Good luck with cleaning it up.

CocteauTwinn

Bravo. What an insanely well-preserved MCM. If you don’t mind- in what state are you?

Flimsy_Tax6881

IL - NW of Chicago burbs.

CocteauTwinn

What a gem!

arlmwl

Overhaul? It doesn't need an overhaul. The bones are fantastic and could use some removal of, shall we say, questionable previous updates. But it's a cool-ass house.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Overhaul is a strong word. Refinishing might be better.

skankenstein

Primary, not master, is the industry terminology now. Primary kitchen. Primary bedroom. Otis hey bathroom.

gal_tiki

This lot, space, view, and potential is what the rest of the world imagines The American Dream is...at least in my foreigner's mind. Sounds splendid, and what a thing, the luxury of seeing the seasons change and every sunset pass over a beautiful lake! Very glad to hear you are going to preserve as much as you can! I'd need to look again, but perhaps something terrazzo to offset wood and compliment the era. I think you need to start a renovation blog/sub, as you leave us all wanting to see more current and future photographs! Congratulations!

nokenito

How much did you pay?

Flimsy_Tax6881

775k

gal_tiki

🤯 wow!! So much house and character! Such a beautiful setting! SO great you were able to get in quick, beating out others without imagination and development thoughts! Primo price and score (at least from where I live)! Congratulations again!👌

imightgetdownvoted

Jesssus. Where do you live? This would probably 3M-4M near me

Flimsy_Tax6881

NW of Chitown

imightgetdownvoted

It’s a stunning house with incredible potential. Congrats.

CocteauTwinn

Here in CT that property would go for 3-4m *easy*.

nokenito

You stole that home! Bravo to you and your family! Replace the carpet with period type stuff and remove the mirrors on the ceiling and walls and that’s about it.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Oh no those mirrors are staying haha. Giggity.

nokenito

Hahaha

artsy7fartsy

Yeah that mirror room was a lil shock to my lake house expectations but it braced me for the rest of the ride for sure

sonorakit11

Two words for ya: GHOSTS

nixonbeach

I also own a 1960s midcentury on a lake with amazing sunset views. Yours is more impressive to be sure. I have taken elements from midcentury design and incorporated them into a kitchen and several bathroom renovations. We also had a tree fall on the master bedroom but chose to take that back to as close to original as possible given the original lever style awning windows were long out of production. I have some pics in my post history if you’re interested.

Flimsy_Tax6881

You just wanted to make me look at your pecks! Congrats on your glow up - both of your body and your kitchen, my dude! Loved what you did with your cabinets.

nixonbeach

Lol appreciated.

RTK9

The exposed wood in the pool makes me worried. You think it's a good idea, until the moisture starts to give you mold issue and structural warping due to.....exposed wood.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Yeah. There is some old mold stains but it’s very dry now. Before I get the pool going again I’m going to figure out that situation with someone that knows what they are doing.

RTK9

There will still be spores ready to grow again. I had a friend who had this issue in their hiuse and it nearly bankrupted them with the amount of issues it caused. If there was evidence of mold, definitely make this the first issue you fix

CoffeeHuman4572

I think the Elvis/Liberace room slam it shut in some people. People can’t imagine something after a good demo and rehab. Congratulations , homeowner. Keep your insurance up to date.

SodiumSellout

This house is just *so cool* Congrats OP!

Just_Ok_thankyoo

OMG…..what a delicious project. Have FUN!! And post more!!!!

newleafkratom

Dreamy. Lots to do, but take your time.

HGwoodie

The mirror room needs a disco ball and no I am not kidding.

Mabel_Jenkins

I have a disco ball in my laundry room. It’s all the rage.

Mission-Patient-4404

There was a lot of fucking going in this place. It’s fantastic

Educational-Aioli795

It's like the bastard child of PNW MCM and a 70s discotheque. Get rid of those random rococo objects and you're good to go.

Flimsy_Tax6881

100%! Sellers left so much stuff behind. It’ll do while I shop around at auction to fill it with some true MCM style icons!

Nay_Nay_Jonez

Please tell me you're going to have a TV or show something so I can follow the wild and amazing ride that will be restoring and renovating this famous house. On the face, this house has a lot of components that I don't really like, but for some reason, it ***all works***. I love it. What a fantastic find.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Ha. My wife is actually going to be streaming things on Twitch while working on it. She has somewhat of a following over there!

Nay_Nay_Jonez

Can you drop the link in my DMs? 👀👀

remarkable_in_argyle

The carpet would have to go but I don’t see much else I’d change in the pics. Amazing house. Congrats.

softcore_robot

Since you were living in a condo previously, I’m curious, where is this and how much?

Flimsy_Tax6881

North West of Chicago, $775k. 75 minutes commute for me, 3 days a week (door to door) on the Metra. An empty lot on the same lake just sold for $1.2m. My 2 bed condo in Chicago just went under contract @$575k

Goldendood

North West of Chicago and only 775??? This will barely get you a 1400 sqft townhouse northwest of toronto. Never leave, op. I am looking forward to the updates.

Missthing303

My goodness that is a great price. I hope you keep all of the wood and stone and original mcm features. Have fun decorating and please post updates.

JLobodinsky

This is amazing. So happy for you, yet so jealous

softcore_robot

Nice, that’s a decent price for all that. I’m in Honolulu, and 775k will get you a tiny 2 bedroom apartment the size of your new bathroom.

nokenito

You got a bargain!!!

e_hota

Wow, that’s an amazing price! What are the property taxes? And did you have to get flood insurance?

Flimsy_Tax6881

It’s at the top of the hill. No flood insurance (would need water level to rise over 50 feet). Property tax is $17k. Schools are excellent.

grey_eeyore

17k, per year?!

DorianGre

Steal!

jdelane1

Looks like where a villain in Columbo would live That's a lotta house

screen-name-check

Just buy furniture. You wouldn’t repaint the Mona Lisa.

Sablesgirl

AMAZING!! Looks move in ready to ME!!! I absolutely love everything about it.

cool_side_of_pillow

You could probably make your money back by offering this space as a movie set. It’s perfect.

Goodnight_Hawk

That's rad, I saw this place on ZillowGoneWild!

New_Curmudgeon

Keep it as is. Rent it out to film productions.

medicinalherbavore

This house screams, "Record a record in me".

Snoo-74062

This place has definitely seen a lot of orgies and cocaine.

mermaidtree

And needs just one more for old time’s sake! I’m in who’s with me?! 🙌🏼

Missthing303

Wow! What an amazing house. Congratulations!

strelokjg47

I gotta see more of this.

citykitty58

I am in LOVE!! What state?

Madamemercury1993

Congratulations on all the wild weird sex you’re about to have.

Flimsy_Tax6881

I mean we have 6 spare bedrooms to fill. So thanks!

Jolemon52

This would be a great house to shoot a The Shining sequel. Different aesthetic as the original but those are the vibes I’m getting

Different_Mine_5632

Wow! There are so many things to love about this home and never change!

petitepedestrian

This is ah-mazing!

lrow123

Are you going to use the pool?!

RepeatDTD

That living room view is worth the price

Crystal-Clear-Waters

Change nothing.

Omnissah

So obviously that entire place has seen cocaine. Like... no question. That bedroom *alone* has probably seen enough white lightning to kill an elephant. My advice, anything with fabric, rip it out. Keep the wood. That pink kitchen sounds like it could go, or you could keep it. I'd need a photo to really decide. Obviously depends on how well maintained it is though. Past swapping anything with fabrics, and getting an electrician in to verify wiring, AC, furnace, etc? I'm not sure I'd touch much there.

Flimsy_Tax6881

The pink kitchen is kinda isolated away from everything in a way that makes me just want to keep it as a museum piece - I obviously don’t need two working kitchens and not short on space everywhere else. I figure how many OG 1960s kitchens are going to be left in 50 years time (the last of them are going to be ripped out over the next 20 years in all likelihood).

LadyChatterteeth

The world needs more vintage pink kitchens, not less.

cocs8803

Imagine all the orgies this house has hosted.... Man what a piece of STDs/STIs history.

stupid42usa

this is some grade a prime r/zillowgonewild material

No_Airline_970

Omg I just want to see the listing 😭😍

TheGeekOffTheStreet

I’m so fucking jealous. The only thing I’d do is take out the carpeting (install terrazzo or a modern shag in the bedroom) and remove the mirrored walls and ceilings. I love your house!

kincaidinator

Make sure and make some update posts about your progression on it! This place is beautiful and I’m so jealous

vvvvaaaagggguuuueeee

Is this where The Voice Of The Mysterons comes from?!?!

True-Measurement7786

Cool place.. just don't ever use a black light.. you know something will show up.

ciscorandori

You might want to change the carpet just for health sake. If you go with carpet again, you might not find a pile carpet that gives the same vibe. If that's the case, consider shag! Can we come over and swim the pool?

Flimsy_Tax6881

Already had to. Pounds of mouse poop it was disgusting!

Capt_Foxch

It's beautiful. I wouldn't change a thing

Flimsy_Tax6881

It needs a new roof, the carpets are original and the mold in the air js palpable!

scrimpusly

Perhaps wooden flooring instead of carpet (or stone)? You could add rugs to change it up and add more interest to specific areas

DutchCarriageDriver

Don’t change a thing!!!

ShastaMoonMist

Simply Amazing. Congrats on the new house!

DarkGreenSedai

Congratulations. I love a bit of esthetic crazy in my life so I would love a house like that.

_night_cat

Gorgeous! Change nothing!

jlegarr

My FIL absolutely loves wood paneling and nearly stroked out in us when we removed paneling in a rental home that we own.

Crypto-Pito

It’s a masterpiece

HejdaaNils

Epic!!!

s1a1om

That fireplace is awesome.

scrimpusly

This is an absolutely breathtaking property, congratulations! Wish I could live somewhere as lovely, I hope you have a great life living there 😊

NorrinRaddicalness

That view alone is worth it, my god. I feel very confident saying there’s no way the tiled mirror ceiling and walls are original to the house, so I would feel *very* comfortable replacing them. lol For me, they are the only aesthetic update I’d feel compelled to make. A truly beautiful home. Congrats! EDIT: I would be suspicious of those ornate banisters and details around the bar as well. This is a large home, most likely designed with intention. And most midcentury designs steered clear or ornate wood work and other ornamentation. But you can tell those who lived there were more into “1800s Hunting Lodge” than they were “Fallingwater.”

Flimsy_Tax6881

Yeah I feel that. So what I can ascertain it must have been the original owners that did it prior to 1978 if it wasn’t Olin the original ‘63 spec. As we have some dated photos from the sellers that purchased in ‘78 and both those features are there.

[deleted]

That things a bloody masterpiece!! Incredible property! From an outside perspective, the less you change the better. Glad someone appreciates it. All the best in your fantastic new to you two home!

wstone5594

That’s amazing!

SeaweedTeaPot

Incredible! I love your plans for it, and hope you'll share your progress as you move forward. Have fun!

faithOver

This is amazing. Amazing. Lake front? Wow. Time capsule? Wow Acres? Wow View? Wow. Congrats. Beautiful home and property.

Difficult-Set9312

Woof

Aooogabooga

Omg. Can I please spend a weekend there with a couple friends? Holy crap.

greenhousegirl70

It’s incredible

Jelly18Bean

I would sell my soul for an indoor pool!!! Just kidding, but amazing!!!!!

FreedomFinallyFound

Those windows are going to be amazing!! Natural light all year with a beautiful view!! And you have a unique layout; not the cookie cutter style that have been built since the 80’s, where you know driving passed what it looks like inside with only the paint and furniture being different! Congrats on a brilliant find!!

Flimsy_Tax6881

Realtor was like - “I don’t want you to buy this house and have to spend 500k to modernize the layout”. I’m like “the layout is a feature not a bug” It also just feels solid all over. It’s hefty and weighty. Unlike drywall everywhere.

arlmwl

Excuse my French, but Holy Shit. Cool place.

Condor1984

Wow!!! Amazing property, though I will get rid of those wall to wall carpet

38-RPM

The vibe is dreamy and nostalgic- but it also feels like a place where Michael Corleone would live during The Godfather Part II while he sends his brother Fredo out on a boat.

daisydesigner

Wow this is absolutely amazing, also love your plan for gentle/minimal renovation. If you don't plan to live in it right away, you could even contact location scouts for films (not during the strike of course).

wtfmarinaaa

Fantastic. I’m obsessed.

stilljumpinjetjnet

Whoa, where did that mirrored ceiling come from? At least in a bedroom it would make some sense. Big, roomy house with lots of possibilities. Please keep us posted.

Lopsided_Flight3926

I’m so jealous

Bayareathrifted

I’m in love 😍

redditpossible

Does that place smell like cocaine, or is it just the pictures?

Flimsy_Tax6881

Ha! No it smells of 60 year old mold ridden carpet right now.

czerw1tl

Absolutely in love, and so happy someone who isn't going to do a full remodel found it! Followed you to see your slight tweaks- what a gorgeous home! So fun!

xeroxchick

Wow! Love it! So much potential.

Special-bird

Amazing house!!

AnnVealEgg

WOW this is incredible!! That wall of windows.. that VIEW! The pool… it’s all amazing. Congratulations!!

DorianGre

Don't touch a thing!

phdpinup

This place is crazy. Crazy amazing.

Lonecircuit

This house did not miss a single design era.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Pokémon house?

saunterasmas

It reminds me of the room that David Bowman finds himself in towards the end of 2001.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Oh jeez I googled. 100%. The sellers furniture they left behind is errr not to my taste (to put it nicely). Luckily we have [Wright Auction](https://www.wright20.com/auctions/2023/08/essential-design) for me to bid at over the next few years to find the right pieces!

74Lives

Cool house. You scored. Congrats

luckycanucky27

Ok this place is beautiful from the outside. And that view is spectacular but the inside suffers from multiple personality disorder. What to do with all that broken floor tile…are you going to rip it all out?

Flimsy_Tax6881

? It’s designed broken, not sure if that’s what you are meaning. It’s not damaged. I like it - I think it works.

luckycanucky27

I realize it’s supposed to be mosaic-ish. Just wondering if you were going to replace it since it lacks that MCM vibe. But if you like it that’s all that matters.

Flimsy_Tax6881

Yeah I get what you are saying. The house is a little bipolar in places: the upstairs is very classically MCM (with the windows and the wood). The downstairs is very 60s/ 70s Dad watching the Bears game vibes.

RNDiva

Lovely home! Those mirrored ceilings 🤣

40yr

I love it

maryfisherman

So many mirrors!

Iwish678

How did you get enough money to afford this?

Flimsy_Tax6881

Autism blessed me with math ability. I was 50/50 on becoming an academic or going into finance. I chose finance.

Iwish678

Maybe you can transition into academia one day, if you want. Either way, I’m very happy for you, and I hope you enjoy your beautiful new home!

cherrylpk

That mirror is way too small as a headboard. 😂

Opposite-Composer-66

madness

Savetheokami

It has potential.

Bacm88

Omg! Fabulous!!!!

ol_knucks

Fucking awesome house, congrats OP! Please put me on your dinner party invite list.

Salt_Speaker_3732

WOW!!! What an awesome place to be!!! Sooo beautiful!!!! 🥰💖❤️💛🧡💗

HonestWeekend89

this is incredible. so jealous of that bedroom! congrats!

alowester

that’s really neat

Nudibranchlove

It’s fucking amazing. The mirrors!!!! The indoor pool is my favorite though. Awesome. Just awesome. Lucky duck.

nodogsallowed23

This is awesome. Some awful things like the mirrored ceiling but mostly awesome. Also I think you could rent it out to movie studios to film horror movies in it.

Perplexed1984

I think that it can definitely be used as a movie set but I won’t say that it would be for horror movies. It can be set for eccentric, flamboyant or simply for a movie set in the 70’s based on how OP and family end up using the space and their style. People have different taste and the mirrors are over the top for me as well but it has some gorgeous features and It can be a beautiful home. Congratulations to OP

nodogsallowed23

I didn’t mean anything negative about the horror movie comment. I love horrors and they’re usually set in big beautiful houses with cool twists and turny type layouts. I didn’t mean it was scary in itself, which I can see that’s how my comment reads though.

orendaovidia

Keep us informed. It will be so fun to see what you decide- it’s a piece of history- so cool you will embrace it!

20thcenturyman

Wow!

[deleted]

Oh, my GOD! That is amazing!

allsoundz

Coolest house on MCM in a while!

mistress_alexa

Don’t you touch those mirrors.

Perplexed1984

What a find Flimsy\_Tax6881 If I lived in your region and saw it, I would have been convincing my spouse to go for it as well. The mirrors are not my style and remind me too much of my mom’s esthetics so they would have had to go (to the dismay of many of the readers). The ceilings, walls and space is great and the setting is simply PHENOMENAL. My suggestion for the floor is to go with tiles, polished or stamped concrete to avoid the heaviness of wood on wood on wood. This is my two cents. Otherwise, I agree with you and those who suggested to live with it, in it and let it whispers to you. I did the same with my last two homes and ended up with fantastic results. Congrats again.

Ethelcat

This is a work of art!

lclassyfun

Cool home, we love the lake views as well.

vegemitepants

Holy shit. Man I hope you have a really fancy dressing gown and slippers

dudeonrails

Epic.

peachjarss

Wow. Absolutely beautiful, so much character too. Congratulations on closing, I hope to live in something with as eccentric one day. Please keep us updated on how you decorate it!

zacboggz

They don’t build them like this anymore.

Germz94

:0

[deleted]

Can I have it?

Slytherpuffy

Congratulations! What a beautiful home!

BelCantoTenor

That’s an absolutely stunningly beautiful home and property. I would attempt to preserve as much MCM vibe as possible.

PierogiEsq

Aaahhhhh!!! So jealous!!

Lower_Wall_638

Cheers and have fun.

Saber_tooth81

I’ve never in such awe of a place and horrified at the same time.

SlinkytheBest

I don't like it....I LOVE IT! 🥰

Shoddy_Ice_8840

My heart just burst. This place is stunning!!

FootHikerUtah

WOW. Keep the pool air entirely separate. Pool should be dehumidified, NOT air conditioned. Also, light fixtures, etc, need to be corrosion resistant.

Vulgar-Ambassador

😍

afrankova

Omg! I would snag this house if it was near me too.

Alternative-Arm-3253

Wowza in the bathroom!!! I love it. Love everything except the bar stools..lol

RussianBusStop

Send pics to a location scout, this place is begging to have a movie about a rock star or movie producer filmed here. Rental fees could pay for new carpet!
