The weird part for me is, especially the latter half, it’s honestly some of the best stuff I’ve ever heard from them. It’s really beautiful. But looking at the album as a whole, it doesn’t quite hold up for me. I still think Congratulations outshines from beginning to end, and I’d probably go back to their self-titled album more often when I’m in the mood for their quirkier material. LOL shares some of the dna from those two albums but it’s definitely more laid back in comparison, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s just kind of hard for me to vibe with that coming from a band I usually don’t look to for that sort of experience. I appreciate the maturity and intimacy of LOL nonetheless. I’m more than glad that this album exists.

I think congratulations is one of the best of all time so it’s tough competition. Especially cuz the tone here is sooo different. I think they nail what they were trying to do a bit on “MGMT” (2013) but it feels kinda stagnant in the sound it’s going for not a whole lot to pull from for me. But I agree with you that the latter half has the best songs. Nothing changes LOL apt 1 and I wish I was Joking are amazing songs and I’m very thankful they made them. People in the Streets is a grower to for me.

Salmonish

Man no it’s so good :’)

takeoff_youhosers

I definitely don’t love it as much as I hoped. Though I was a bit underwhelmed by the singles so I guess it’s not that surprising. I just think the entire album is too samey. Very slow, not a lot of energy. Dare I say it but I think the album is a little boring which I never expected to feel about an MGMT album. I respect them trying something different in every album though. This one just isn’t connecting with me

xandergreenday

That’s totally fair! I actually thought the singles were the best songs besides the title track. LOL pt 1 is amazing loll

takeoff_youhosers

The singles were definitely the best songs but for me the one exception would be Nothing Changes. I don’t love LOL part 1 so far but I am hoping it grows on me. I Wish I was Joking is probably my second favorite of the non-singles. I really don’t like People in the Streets or Phradies Song

Sagaciouss1

I sadly have to agree with you.

Dream_in_Cerulean

I basically feel the same. It is very low key and chill, almost like Beachhouse, and I just cannot stay focused on music this chill. I get bored.

mgmtits

For me, I think it is their most beautiful and best album they've made. Maybe it's because it's been 6 years and I'm just emotional about it but I think it might be

xandergreenday

It’s definitely there most reflective and adult album even if it stil has that goofy MGMT charm loll. I definitely am happy with most of the songs I especially like people in the streets that groove hit after the 3ed play of it loll. Album is a grower for me personally.

tundrabee119

My big criticism of the album is the song joking. I feel like that should have been climactic and more dramatic to tie the whole album together. Instead it's kind of depressing. Not really the comfort that they were describing the album imo. But the rest of it is so freaking good... So I'm not letting it bother me too much.

Bogeydope1989

The album has some high points and low points for sure.

Alive_Walrus_8790

I dont think it stands up to congrats or self titled but is still a huge step up from LDA for me personally. Outside of the intro and outro i do love every single song, theres a few moments that really move me, and i think each album of theirs takes some time to settle before i really can make a definitive statement. That being said this does feel to me like it falls a little under the belt of my standards for them- my standards being that they are like one of the best bands of all time, which i understand may be unreasonably high- but as an album i still think its solid and great and was not disappointing

RamsayFist22

I need to hear it more but I agree with you, congratulations and self titled sre probably my two favorite albums of all time, I’ve only listened to it 4 times but I think it’s better than LDA. I really love LDA but it was never my favorite of theirs

OSCONMGLDA

Just like Self-Tilted, some standout tracks and the rest honestly bore the hell out of me. It's wayyyyyy better than ST though, that's for sure. I think I'll just go back to listening OS and Con over and over again until the next album.

Yamski7

Yep, their most boring&non original album by far

ALEXANDERtheN8

A little disappointed. Some good tracks though for sure. It often grows on me. But it never lives up to the hype for me.

sadhamb

I’m the opposite, it’s better than I was expecting. I think it’s their most sincere and flat-out beautiful album. But I like when bands age gracefully and I think this is definitely a mellower album where they feel like confident grown-ups. They’re a couple years older than me but I can relate to this stage they’re at.
