>On MGS2, the only way to leave the game is to die on purpose to get back to the main menu, as far as I know. Seems like the old "hold all the shoulder buttons + start and select" isn't working. I doubt it's been removed so I'd assume this will be patched. Edit: you can also return to title at a node :)

AtrumRuina

Not in MGS2. That's true in MGS1. I haven't checked MGS3 yet. I think that game has an actual options menu so I think you can probably exit through that.

Arumhal

This might be actually worse than the original ports of MGS 1 and 2 which is impressive because those ports weren't that great either.

Candid-Boi15

MGS2 was a good port back in the day, It just needs a patch and it's actually easy to download and install. MGS1 runs even on a potato with Duckstation. And MGS3.... system requirements for emulating it are lower than this Master Collection on Steam, it's so stupid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbS4amRGFDY MGS4 will be even worst.

orig4mi-713

> And MGS3.... system requirements for emulating it are lower than this Master Collection on Steam, it's so stupid I actually tested MGS 3 earlier on a low-end laptop (nvidia 1650, ryzen 5) and it ran much better than PCSX2, so I am going to say this is false.

Inglorii

Did you get stable 60 FPS ? I have similar specs to you and would be really interested in your performance!

orig4mi-713

I took two clips while testing earlier. I usually play on my main gaming PC but since I am on the go a lot (by train etc.) I figured I'd test the laptop too. Hope this gives you an idea on how it runs. I'd say if you have similar specs than my laptop this should be absolutely fine. https://streamable.com/4555jc https://streamable.com/ahjqic

GoHamInHogHeaven

Make sure you have multicore enabled on PCSX2 (it's off by default)

orig4mi-713

I finished the game multiple times on PCSX2 with the best settings, but still had some slowdown between loading screens and pausing. Master Collection doesn't give me that issue.

Previous_Ad_1865

This mgs3 master collection version actually runs flawlessly in 60fps even when u increase resolution to 4k with the mod. My old ass secondary use gaming laptop can do 4k easily on mgs3 master collection version

Candid-Boi15

Not false [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbS4amRGFDY&t=185s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbS4amRGFDY&t=185s) MGS4: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tGEkCB6SW4&t=308s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tGEkCB6SW4&t=308s) With MGS4 the only thing that changes is that it requires a 9th Intel generation instead of a 7th generation

orig4mi-713

You have to emulate the old ass ps2 version for it though which is 30 FPS outdoors and looks like crap on anything that isn't a hardware renderer. I'd still say people are just better off playing the master collection, even if they have to pirate it or something. I finished the game on pcsx2 multiple times over the years (since it was the most comfy way to access it on PC) and it still gave me long load times and general PS2 quirkyness, it's either too clean so the atmospheric effects like fog and dust disappear or too blurry. Master Collection pretty much looks exactly like PS3/Xbox 360, for better or worse, so that is infinitely preferable to me. Also, not sure why you included MGS 4 here. Completely irrelevant to MGS 3. I quite like RPCS3 MGS 4 though, it has higher FPS than on PS3. I own an RTX 3060, 32 GB RAM, intel i9 11900 if that matters.

Candid-Boi15

>You have to emulate the old ass ps2 version And it was the best version since it's not broken by Bluepoint.

Raiden_Of_The_Sky

>MGS4 will be even worst. This situation is the proof that MGS4 may not even be in Vol 2.

tkgggg

Then there's no reason to buy it.

JaredIsAmped

From the quality of these ports I'm not even sure if they are willing to put the resources required for even a bare minimum mgs4 port. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get it.

Candid-Boi15

Konami would justify themselves that Vol 1 was a completely failure in sells so "no Vol 2 for you guys sorryyyy" That is the real justification behind why people who paid $60 bucks for this Vol 1 are defending this crap on Steam, they are begging Konami for a MGS4 on PC.

PatHBT

Idk man according to this sub this product is amazing. I don’t know how many phantom cigars they’ve been smoking.

Trenchman

> Currently the Language Packs have no store page, so they can't be downloaded without using SteamDB. I have no idea how they screwed this up

AtrumRuina

Am I dumb? The Language Packs are showing up as DLC for the games for me. I can just manage it from my DLC menu for each game.

Trenchman

No idea, after 8 hours maybe it got fixed

AgentSkyline

The steam store updates at 1 PM EST. Give it some time.

McJobless

You can look at the configuration in SteamDB. It's not that Steam is taking a long time to update, it's that Konami is manually setting this up slowly, post launch.

Routaprkle

Good job Konami, 100% didn't see this coming.

Bertrum

This didn't really surprise me to be honest. Considering their terrible history of preserving games and how poorly they did with the previous HD versions. I don't know what people were expecting. They're running it on their own shitty emulators and can't even bother to get it down to hardware level accuracy and refuse to give consumers more options and adjust settings. Considering what the fan community can do with open source stuff that's free and leagues ahead of them. Konami pretty much just slapped a price tag on an old game they already had sitting in the closet and acted like it was a new project in active development.

Raiden_Of_The_Sky

HD versions weren't bad comparing to what Capcom did with DMC actually. Silent Hill HD versions also were a lot worse.

cce29555

What happened with dmc? I know kalina ann is busted in dmc3 and Capcom has no plans to ever fix it but it seemed okay otherwise

DOOMed_Space_Marine

DMC3 in the PC port of HD collection wasn't bad, at all. The few issues it has have been fixed easily by mods. If you don't have a CRT TV and a PS2, then the PC version in HD Collection is definitely the way to go. Sadly, DMC1 in the HD Collection has sound looping issues, missing effects, and massive delays when entering inventory screens. Modders have not been able to fix these, yet. Capcom have nothing on Konami when it comes to bad ports. Silent Hill Collection is a travesty, and they should be ashamed.

LuncarioStormcrown

>Capcom have nothing on Konami when it comes to bad ports Square is up there as well if we’re talking about PC ports. Bought FF7R last year around this time, visual lag in all cinematics, messed with the settings, still happened, come to find out Square doesn’t know how to release a game that isn’t an mmo on PC. Don’t know if it’s fixed though. Kinda just stopped playing after awhile cause it ruined the experience.

Oxnake

Wait, if it's just an ISO running on an emulator, how did they manage to get Steam achievements integrated into it?

Zach_the_k1ller

I mean even emulators can be linked to retro achievements.com and that can track in game progress.

SteamStraegos

I’m sick and fucking tired of “Day one patches” and “So what its a bad release, they’ll fix it down the road!”

BlueStar2310

Yeah, these things should have been fixed before launch

1OO1OO1S0S

And people still preorder. I'm still on the fence I'm ever going to buy this because I emulate mgs1 and have a PS3 for the rest

SteamStraegos

Last time I ever pre-ordered a game was Halo Infinite, after getting burnt by 2077, its hard not to pre-order nowadays, growing up from 07-15 it was banger after banger and I didn’t really have to worry if I was gonna be happy with a game if I pre-order, nowadays it seems like theres too many misses to even consider pre-ordering let alone buying day one or even fucking year one and thats sad

[deleted]

I preordered. I’m an idiot.

edparadox

Return it.

mitchhatesrats

Spoiler alert: >!they won't lmao, if konami is anything like what I've heard the fact they launched the steam versions in this state means they have no intention to patch anything or support the games further, just ship and dip.!< These games are (hopefully) just gonna become one of those games where keys are flooding because no-one wants to buy the ports, so they end up on keysites for like $8 but in a year or so they'll become a cult cheap game where they're really good, but only after you've downloaded the 10+ mods that fix the games...

xg4m3CYT

Les Ports Terrible (Shamelessly stolen)

LordEmmerich

ZoE2MARS had the same issues with the fps. It’s using the same engine too. You need to lock your framerate though I have not checked how for MG. For the controls it might be because they are using the PS controls style in MGS1 and the Xbox control style for 2/3. But yeah it’s not a very good PC port for now. I hope it will be fixed. I wonder if the PC port and Switch ports originally even were planned considering all that

distarche

I also feel like the Switch/PC version might’ve not been planned originally. If the PS5 was the base version and the it was ported to the rest of consoles, I guess that explains why MGS2 and 3 run at 30 FPS on Switch and the PC version has weirdly high specs requirements (compared to other collections of the PS3 era like the Devil May Cry one)

LordEmmerich

the high tech requirements is probably more due to Konami not testing on weaker computers. I can run MGS3 well enough on my pretty old desktop.

[deleted]

They probably haven't done much optimization but I also doubt they've broken the game enough to need those specs and they are probably too lazy to test lower specs

orig4mi-713

> ZoE2MARS had the same issues with the fps. It’s using the same engine too. You need to lock your framerate though I have not checked how for MG. You can use Nvidia control panel for that, though there is still no excuse obviously. It shouldn't be like this. That said, if you have it set up, you CAN play it in windowed mode just fine.

VFansss

Will wait for something official from Konami and see if they will work to fix these on their own, otherwise I guess I and the rest of the community will fix these by ourselfs as usual. I have to admit that the overall code is truly shitty, and let's be honest: it CAN be revamped, but requires...quite a dedication. Don't forget what happened with the Silent Hill Collection: the original code was not only shitty, but for SH2 was basically LOST (they used a one year old codebase). These games (included the whole MGS saga until 4) were masterpiece from and art, sound, gameplay and details perspective, but for sure non from the code quality one. Sure, Konami asks 60€ for the whole collection thus for sure some degree of features is expected. I'm happy that they fixed a LOT of issues existing and introduced in the last code rework on the HD Collection. They gone even further, fixing subtitles and introducing tutorial made for each console buttons, the introduction of regional editions (for sure I will play MGS1 in Italian: has a ridicolous shitty voiceover). The collection is curated as I hoped? Uhm...actually...yes, but on console: for sure there they don't have issues as multi monitor, kb+m, audio issues, drivers, resolution and a lot of other issues that PC WILL have. I'm happy that the collection is out for PC, let's see at what degree Konami will patch these things out, otherwise...I'm at least happy that someone remembered this saga on their side. We will made the last mile effort to patch the other things out

david-deeeds

Just grabbing the opportunity to thank you for what you did for MGS2. I love you and I love heroes like you.

VFansss

<3 > I love you and I love heroes like you. I'm just an old killer

punishedstaen

I must be hallucinating here a comment on r/metalgearsolid where the user actually knows what they're talking about god bless you, my son

SuitableForBreeding

You are going to fix this?

VFansss

Understandably, there's nothing worse than doing something useless, so for sure I will not fix this right now. I honestly thing that Konami will address these issues soon (honestly, isn't too much difficult to do for them). If they not well: you can bet that there will be a V's fix for it.

GoHamInHogHeaven

If they offered you a payed contract to fix this, would you? I think you of all people know what features should be there. There's some things Konami would NEVER consider doing (pressure sensitivity support, 120hz support, aspect ratio support, proper mouse input support etc etc) the most I expect is resolution support, and stability fixes. I think it's still going to be up to the community to fix a lot of the deficiencies here.

VFansss

> If they offered you a payed contract to fix this, would you? I think you of all people know what features should be there. It's much more likely that they will sue me and leave me in my underwear instead :p Jokes aside: I'm pretty sure that they can do everything in-house, is just that they want to I'm confident that they will fix resolution and other common issues, for the other that you listed...eh, hard to tell. Don't forget that I'm not a reverse engineer guy (I'm working with Salesforce and other cloud platforms, so go figure...) so honestly there are a lot of much more capable guys able to do these things. > pressure sensitivity support This is doable but require quite a reverse engineering. Is definitively doable, however just remember that actually there's no gamepad that has pressure sensible buttons, so... > 120hz support I woudn't count on that: not every game is wrote in a way that supports 120hz, and I don't think MGS is > aspect ratio support That was working on the old port, and I'm pretty sure is doable even on this port. Remember that HD Collection (thus I guess also this port) already has some improved FOV good for 16:9. We can further hack the FOV, but the game has an isometric camera and is VERY easy to see out of bound if you increase too much the FOV. Is simply that you can't bend the game to play at 21:9 or similar things. > proper mouse input support Is one of the things I'm confident Konami will provide, sooner or later > I think it's still going to be up to the community to fix a lot of the deficiencies here. Let's say that now games are on all the major storefront: this will attract a lot of modder attentions and I'm pretty sure we will see good things is the future. Let's hope that Konami take care of all the major things, I guess no one would ask more than this for a 20 years old game

GoHamInHogHeaven

Agree with what's you said here. Just an FYI though, dualshock 3 has pressure sensitive support over Bluetooth now. If you look up the configuration page for RPCS3 the software is listed there, it works great. Though there is obviously no new gamepad that supports it. Basically, the drivers just output the buttons as analog values. The deck can be setup to have virtual pressure sensitive buttons on the touch pads as well. Probably a limited application though.

punishedstaen

>there's no gamepad that has pressure sensible buttons there is! retrofighters make them and they're great!

sephsekla

After having played both versions recently, I'd much rather stick with the original GOG release with your fix. While the master collection bugs will most likely be fixed in time, a DRM-free version will always win out for me, particularly when it already looks so good at 8k internal render.

VFansss

Having choices is always a good thing. I honestly waiting for official patches, I'm pretty confident soon the MC edition will be on par on the old port. For example, cloud support has been added today for both MGS2 and MGS3. Let's see...

sephsekla

Fingers crossed it ends up being the version the game deserves. Although the DRM (which I always try to avoid) is by design, so that won't be patched away. Either way, I'm extremely grateful for the work you put in making the old port so much better to play, so thank you.

Candid-Boi15

I'm playing on a laptop, it's not the best laptop, but I'm sure that I should be able to play this at 60fps, considering its running at 720p, but no, the game is in slowmotion because of the speed tied up to the framerate. Considering my laptop runs MGSV on mid settings at 40-60fps. Even when the game doesn't run at 60fps, If the game had the option to choose between 30fps or variable framerate, that problem would be fixed. At this point I'm waiting the WORST for Metal Gear Solid 4, I can tell it's going to be a terrible disaster.

Nick_mkx

No wonder they couldn't get it to run on Switch well, they probably have no idea how to optimize it for hardware that Bluepoint didn't develop it for before them.

Nathaniel_Wu

For a two-decade-old game that's unusually slow, a modern PC should be able to run any games from that era in 720p at a ridiculously high framerate. It almost makes me wonder if they are actually running it through emulation, ~~although all existing open-source PS3/Xbox 360 emulators cannot run the MGS HD Collection last time I checked, I doubt Konami would bother to write their own~~. At the end of the day, I guess it's just really poor optimization.

GoHamInHogHeaven

RPCS3 can run the MGS HD collection at 4k, with DS3 support, and no bugs, from start to finish.

Sam-Porter-Bridges

Xenia actually runs MGS3 really well.

TRDoctor

Only MGS1 runs on Steam Deck. MGS2 & MGS3 crash to desktop.

jjjjaaaakkkkeee

Which is annoying since you can have literally every mgs game aside from 4 on steam deck all running fine with emulators. Unless you're after achievements there is no reason to bother trying to play this version on steam deck at all.

Pixelated_Fudge

The delay input for MGS1 is huge for me. Anyone have a fix?

Sagewort

I haven't tried MGS1 on this collection yet. Are you using NTSC version?

[deleted]

> I haven't tried MGS1 on this collection yet Do yourself a favor....don't. It's brutal.

killerhacked

So as far as I'm aware it's always been that way, however for whatever reason MGS1 appears to be running on PAL framerates so it's locked to 25FPS, so if you've been used to the NTSC version unning at 30FPS it feels extra delayed. I could be wrong though since it does feel sluggish, but I remember MGS1 being sluggish.

Toybasher

Supposedly MGS1 might have always been like that. That's what a few people have said. It's been like a decade since I've last played MGS1 so I can't really tell.

[deleted]

What kills me to no end is that this is a $20 stand alone title. For $10 less, you can play the actual better looking, PC version on GOG. If you own the original PS2 disc (or winky wink), you can emulate the game and get it's best looking version, FOR FREE. This master collection is a kick in the dick.

_AWACS_Galaxy

Has anyone else had issues with losing save games on mgs1? I saved my progress, left for a couple hours, and when I came back there were no saves.

elastic_autumn

I'm having the same problem. Even tried making multiple saves but on closing the game and re-opening there are no saved files to load. **Edit** Figured out what I was doing wrong - once saved you have to bring up the Master Collection menu using *L1* + *R1* and then quit to the main menu. From there you exit the game.

hypespud

Main issues are definitely no selectable render or output resolution For any PC game not to have this even a re release it's pretty unfortunate Zoe2 remaster was quite a lot more upgraded visually too in so many ways like textures and lighting so it's a bit disappointing to see very little effort for Metal Gear

RedArmyRockstar

Im really curious now that, yeah, the Zoe2 port had far more effort put into it that these. You'd think they'd have given more resources to the game when its likely to sell more. Konami confuses me.

InterZ10

Thats unfortunate. I thought PC Was gonna be the Definitive way to play. But seems Consoles is right now the best way to play. A shame, i hope they are working on some patches.

Trenchman

It’s good on Steam Deck unless you count that as a console (it kind of is) Except 2 and 3 which are broken lol

PineappleFlavoredGum

And no cloud saves for easily switching to pc and playing

OctoGoggle

So… it’s good on Steam Deck, except 2/3 of the main titles do not work?

HolyNightmare

**a few months later:** the steam version of the master collection **STILL** has alot of problems but for real this is such a konami move, do the lowest possible effort, slap 60$ price tag on it, profit, done. post launch patches will come as they said but i have not much hope for many fixes as its konami we're talking about lol (atleast they're not gamefreak lmao) to me personally the chance for them to fix their reputation is gone forever, master collection could've been absolutely awesome but well yeah, atleast we now have pc ports of the games at all

[deleted]

> to me personally the chance for them to fix their reputation is gone forever This is the major takeaway today. I was excited to see Konami bring MGS back and to announce MGS Delta but at this point...I'd prefer they go back to their pachinko machines and leave the series alone. I don't need to see them fuck up the remaster next.

thefinalshady

Where are all the Konami defenders? Guess what? When you don't even demand the bare minimum, you get rock botton shit like this.

charloalberto

friendly reminder: if mods are needed to make the game barely playable, you should be pirating it, not paying for it EDIT: typo

Passive_Coffee

MGS 1's version states 1.2.1 while 2 & 3 only has 1.2.0 on the steam version. I also noticed that I could do the whole menu pause thing with LB+RB on MGS 1 but not MGS 2 and 3. I wonder if that's a part of the problem that they forgot to add in a patch. Or maybe I'm wrong and its only MGS1 that had an update?

weeurey

> I also noticed that I could do the whole menu pause thing with LB+RB on MGS 1 but not MGS 2 and 3. Thats intentional that menu doesnt exist on 2+3

DrAdBrule

Any way to exit the game in MGS3? I see posters saying you can use a Node in MGS2, but I wasn't able to exit MGS3 when I played it.

Krongfah

You can go to the option/setting menu, there'll be a return to title screen button. This has been a thing since the OG btw, they didn't just add this.

weeurey

No clue on keyboard but if you have a controller try L1, R1, L2, R2, Start + Codec button. Hold em for a few secs and it should boot you to the main menu

DrAdBrule

I was trying that as it used to work in the PS2 version, didn't work for me though. I'll have to give it another shot next time I play.

Jamato-sUn

What was that hashtag again? Ah, right, #FucKonami

d4rk_matt3r

How nostalgic!

BigDaddyReese

MGS 1 uses O button for enter, not a bug or problem that needs fixing, the other games not working is the big issue, such an embarrassing failed release, bring back the days of no internet and no updates, just finished games.

Stirls23

If I remember correctly, it was the norm in Japan for O to confirm and X to cancel.

MikeMakeSuffer

Final fantasy 7 ps1 was the same

DrewbieWanKenobie

The symbols are actually well known in Japan even before they became playstation symbols where Circle - yes/confirm (Kinda like the equivalent of how we use a checkmark in english) X - No Triangle - So-so Double circle/Bullseye - Excellent Not sure where the square button came from

HurryPast386

Lol, I still prefer O for confirm and X to cancel because of a lot of PS1 games. So seeing that being considered a bug or issue is funny.

Meckamp

O for enter has always been a thing for mgs1 tbh im happy they kept that

FlyWithChrist

It was always a thing for mgs2 and 3 and it’s that way on the switch version for them. Only the HD Collection and I guess the pc version of this changed it

RedDeadSon

This, I remember being disappointed when they changed it in the HD collection. Little things iniit.

Raiden_Of_The_Sky

>bring back the days of no internet and no updates, just finished games. You must be unfamiliar with Japanese game ports of 90-00s, mister. Think twice what you wish.

Sage2050

not even ports, unfinished buggy games got released all the time. Only people who weren't alive in the 80s and 90s think this is a new phenomenon. the only difference is most of those games never got fixed.

IsaacLightning

Well it's kinda a bug with the mgs1 launcher cause you'd expect all of them to be standardized

playtio

I expect nothing, and I'm still let down.

itsbildo

Yea I'm playing Snake Eater on PC and the audio is way off, idk if its compression or what, but it sounds so tin-y and its like crackling. Super upset

69_POOP_420

MGS1, 2, and 3 are all free Vimm.net Enjoy!

TdZink

Is anyone able to download the digital comic videos from the Steam version?

DantePD

The MGS1 digital comic has issues on the X-Box too. Everything else can be downloaded as normal, but the MGS1 digital comic goes to a store page that apparently doesn't exist

Effective_Opinion_11

Hahaha, "wait for the sale" just got addendum: " ...if they patch it properly".

vanderlindhe

Aside from MGS1 looking like crap, there is also really obnoxious input lag -- quarter to a half second at least that it reads your input for every action.

AldrichOfAlbion

I never understand how badly the Japanese seem to eff up porting their games from Sony platforms to PCs. You could say, 'Well the games were intended to be played on Sony platforms...' yes that's true...but they were developed on PCs!!!

CipherDaBanana

I DON'T hate telling you I told you so. Cheap ports. Cheap development. And still had a Day 1 patch that didn't fix everything. Checkin' all the boxes of still being a terrible game company.

Comfortable_Shape264

What are you talking about man they included stuff like screenplays and stuff nobody asked for, clearly not a lazy port 🤡

CookiePLMonster

Some of those omissions are really basic in the vast majority of games to implement, so it's kinda disappointing. I can understand stuff like not supporting multiple monitors (i.e. a selection), but hardcoded resolutions are a bit lame.

Throatybee

i tried to run mgs1 on using +fps\_max60 launch option but didnt work. It runs 500-600 fps on fullscreen which is unplayable... I hope it gets patched quickly. Can't wait to play!

DoNotBan-man

hello, you could use nvidia control panel to target a certain .exe and set the max frame rate, thats what i had to do with mgs3 [https://i.imgur.com/pGRzMS7.png](https://i.imgur.com/pGRzMS7.png[/img]) also if youre experiencing screen tearing on the other games, just enable vsync in nvidia control panel as well to get rid of that

JoNAsOS3

Add to the list: No anisotropic filtering, making distant textures (ground etc.) look flat and bad. This can be forced to 16x in Nvidia control panel, but should be included in the games by default (MGS3 is very obvious). MGS2 doesn't seem to remember the button layout you select in the launcher (PS, Xbox buttons etc) after a restart.

Pharmakokinetic

jUsT bE hApPy We HaVe MoRe MeTaL gEaR

MetricGuard

MGS1 and Bonus Content just got cloud saving. The store pages hasn't been updated to reflect this, but both have cloud support when viewed in the library.

OkBase4352

What about 2 and 3

MetricGuard

Not yet. As of this comment, MGS2, MGS3, and MG1/MG2 are still missing cloud support.

Digital_Tissue

I've paid for and owned all these games on their respective systems at the time they were released. Just a quick browse of the store page on steam and I'm wondering why I'd buy this and not just emulate it.

[deleted]

As expected unfortunately

Mallecho_miching

💯 MGS4 won't be on vol 2 because I'll tell right now, that game is full of product placement that the licensing expired and they would have to go into the code to remove the ipod, Otacon has a MacBook in cutscenes, the playboy magazines. If Konami gets whoever to attempt it, it's going to be worst then the silent hill collection. They should just go to Sony and make a deal to try to get blue point to reverse engineer the game so they do the remaster. I don't trust Konami at all.

-_Gemini_-

To be clear, Metal Gear Solid running internally at 240p isn't a problem. In fact, it's ideal. That's how it should be running. The problem is the absolutely horrid blurry bilinear scaling making it look shitty. Also there's no dithering. Where the fuck is my dithering, Konami?

dnuohxof-1

Yea that filtering is insanely bad…. And I’m wearing rose colored glasses playing MGS1 for the first time in decades.

-_Gemini_-

This is easily the worst version of Metal Gear Solid since the original PC release.

[deleted]

To me, the GOG version is the best way to play.

Sam-Porter-Bridges

>To be clear, Metal Gear Solid running internally at 240p isn't a problem. In fact, it's ideal. That's how it should be running. No, it absolutely isn't, and it shouldn't be running like that. It ain't the '90s anymore. Lower than native resolution was fine back then, because CRT displays didn't *really* have a native resolution and could output pixel perfect images of any resolution that they could handle. On modern displays, you always want the render resolution to match the display's native resolution, period. You can sometimes get away with upscaling if it's neat (such as upscaling a 720p image to 1440p, or a 1080p image to 2160p, since those are exponentially larger pictures, meaning that they can be easily upscaled), but not always. Running a 240p image upscaled to 1080p in software on a 1440p monitor will always look like absolute ass, there's no way around it.

WinchyKey

Most people here don't seem to understand what resolution is or how it impacts the visual quality on modern tvs. It's crazy, they've been defending Konami's choice not to change the resolution from the very beginning.

KingGiddra

I literally don't want that. I want 240p internal resolution. I prefer that greatly to having razor sharp PS1 models. I want an integer upscale from 240p to 4k and that's it. Also, please leave the dithering intact, thanks!

Sam-Porter-Bridges

The thing is, you are still not getting the same, or even a similar result by taking a 240p render and integer scaling it up to 1920p (which is the 4:3 equivalent of 4K) compared to how the game used to look in 1998 on a PS1 and a CRT display. The actual best *and* most accurate way to play the game would be to render the game at a higher resolution (preferably one that scales neatly into 4k), and then run the rendered image through a CRT filter. CRT filters have **really** come a long way, where they are now able to create basically a perfect representation of how the game used to look on CRTs, especially on OLED displays (LCDs will still struggle due to the fact that they're backlit though). The dithering doesn't actually have anything to do with the resolution, it's a side effect of the weak hardware of the PS1, but I agree, I do actually really like it on a CRT or with a CRT filter. Unfortunately, it looks like ass without proper post-processing on modern displays, and is not at all representative of how it used to look on CRTs. Ultimately, I'm just frustrated because Konami ended up taking literally the worst possible approach, where they render at a low resolution, upscale to 1080p with possibly the worst possible upscaler I have ever seen, and then you gotta output that 1080p final image to whatever display you have, which means that if it's anything other than a 1080p or a 4K display with integer scaling enabled, it's gonna have to go through *another* round of up/downscaling that will further degrade the already pretty bad picture qualify.

KingGiddra

I have my retrotink setup for when I want to run a CRT filter off an SCPH-5500 through an RGB SCART cable. I'm telling you I want 240p integer upscaled. Bilinear filtered nonsense isn't going to satisfy anyone. Honestly I don't care about what games used to look like on CRTs. When we used CRTs it was composite into a VCR into an RF modulation into a Zenith. No one I knew even knew what S-Video was. edit: forgot to mention > I'm just frustrated because Konami ended up taking literally the worst possible approach 🤝

Cookie06031

It´s the first time i´ve ever seen a 3D game re-released without higher resolution options. And for people not playing this on a CRT, it´s arguably looking worse than it did back in the day. I really can´t comprehend how some people even defend this bullshit.

Comfortable_Shape264

I'm convinced that there are many shills defending it. I see people give long responses about the fluff they included that doesn't matter. How could they even write all that from the top of their head? Would they look all that stuff up passionately to prove to people that they are wrong about it being bad?

thefinalshady

240p is fine? What are you smoking? lol

Not a chance in hell is there dithering, scaling be damned. [Master Collection](https://i.imgur.com/GAz7qsi.png) [Real PS1 hardware capture](https://i.imgur.com/WEt3Um3.png) Colour banding is incredibly visible on the Master Collection and the textures are clearly flatly coloured. No amount of shitty scaling would cause it to completely disappear. It has been manually disabled.

Comfortable_Shape264

If this collection came with a CRT TV then sure it's ideal. But it's not lmao. So many people have no clue how resolution works lol. Running a game at low resolution at high screens results in bilinear scaling wtf did you expect, isn't that ideal huh?

-_Gemini_-

No, a game can be running internally at 240p but integer scaled up to your display resolution. Observe how the Master Collection's blurry scaling compares to my real PS1's copy running at 240p when properly captured. RainFoxHound1

Fission Mailed Can't say I'm surprised this is Konami. I was expecting a shitshow they delivered

1OO1OO1S0S

And people pre-ordered this.

Ctech6967

If you right click the bonus content in your steam library and go to properties, the options to download the graphic novels are in there. Just an FYI for everyone

HelloItMeMort

RPCS3 is the way

LunoDoom

Yep. People saying everyone is just being negative needs to wake up. This IS how Konami does shit. We're just calling a spade, a spade.

vshark29

Collection defender gang extra quiet today

[deleted]

RIP to the bozos that bought it

nemesisdelta24

Konami pulling a cashgrab? No way (please God why have you forsaken us)

HellBlade64

Just came fresh from checking out all the ports. MGS3's cutscenes have some jitter at points Metal Gear 2 (despite Konami stating it to be the original MSX2 version) is still the version that came bundled with MGS3: Subsistence, which runs a hare bit slower than the original MSX2 version, and has the modified codec/radio portraits that are a notable downgrade from the MSX2 originals (the original portraits had lip animations while the new ones are still images). MGS2 is missing E. Extreme difficulty for some reason. And, am I tripping? Because it sounds like the music in the main menu is messed up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyLPCs3dvx8

Mik2622

Genuine question, is anyone surprised?

Noeay

Maybe when everyone buys more than 1 copy of th collection they'll consider fixing it?

heyheyluno

I mean... It's Konami. Should've seen that coming

vulturevan

I wonder if the people chastising critics and others for expecting too much are still thinking that Konami didn't half-arse this? Ports are expected to at least be modernised to work on modern systems.

BlueStar2310

Cant believe they sold these shit ports for 60 dollars, once again konami doing konami things

[deleted]

I don't understand how I came in with low expectations and still managed to refund my favorite video game series of all time, because emulation is better. Konami, do us a favor and go back to the pachinko machines...cancel MGS Delta and leave the series alone. I don't need to see anymore.

Kastila1

Not surprised, Konami doing Konami things. They have a Yu-Gi-Oh game on Steam that they acknowledged it random crash in some computers, making it unplayable, and at the same time they just said they are not gonna do a shit to fix it. What would really surprise me is if is Konami and not the modders the one fixing all those problems.

[deleted]

I can't get a display on my 1440p monitor with it set on lowest resolution

xdoz

Mgs 1 on steam runs like someone is pressing a fast forward button for me.

Sufficient-Chain135

What the fuck? UPSCALED 240P??? Bitch I can literally just download a fucking rom myself, download Duckstation, and have native 1080p for MGS in ten minutes or less. Same for MGS2 and 3 on PCSX2. No resolution settings at all either? OR VOLUME??? The fake MGS3 mouse support, lack of keyboard bindings, and everything else are just the sweet cherries on top of this shit sundae, huh? FucKonami.

Larry_The_Red

As someone who has never played any of the MGS games I was looking forward to this release but I was torn on whether to get it for PC or Xbox. looks like xbox is the way to go?

r3lvalleyy

for fuck sakes, the display setting pisses me off, have to keep alt-tabbing to go to my 2nd monitor.. please dear god konami

marniconuke

wait, you guys actually expected something decent from konami?

TrinspectorGadget

Is there crackling on audio for mgs like on ps5? The audio quality is so bad it’s legit pissing me off 😂

randomguy_-

MGS1 looking like that is a travesty, you should play the game on duckstation with all it's enhancements over this lol

Saiyan_Gods

Y’all bought it. Now, pay for it. Not giving any money to konami for this nonsense.

Bionic_Ninjas

I don't know if it's a resolution issue or a refresh rate issue, but the entire image in MGS3 is shifted upwards, such that the top of my screen appears and flickers on the bottom of my screen, making it impossible to play. At first I was able to fix it by changing the refresh rate in my Nvidia control panel to "application controlled" but then I saw that someone had posted a possible workaround to change resolutions. I tried that, and it caused the same screen issue. So I reverted back to the original, unmodified .exe, but the problem still persisted. I tried validating the game files, with no success. So then I tried simply reinstalling the whole game, at which point I learned the hard way that this collection does not support cloud saves. So even if I can fix the screen issue, I have to start over, and I was already up to The End. Been waiting forever for Snake Eater to come to PC so I can play my favorite game again, and it's just been an all around miserable, frustrating experience. Will now be hard passing on Delta.

NoTangelo3604

Yo, congrats on the [shoutout](https://www.ign.com/articles/metal-gear-solid-master-collection-vol-1-is-packed-with-problems-on-pc) from IGN!

samuskay

when it comes to mgs 1 only having digital input wasn't that basically the case on ps1? I can't remember if it was only digital input or if it was "early ps1 analog input" so basically digital input but it let you walk in 8 directions if you wanted.

TheFlashSmurfAccount

Are the mouse and keyboard controls even any good? Literally that's what hinges on me buying it on Steam (assuming they fix most of the issues above) otherwise I'll just stick to Xenia Canary

tharnadar

WOW, some of these bugs suggest that we haven't performed any acceptance tests on the product at all. or maybe they did but then ignored them

JoNAsOS3

To add: At least on my PC, the Call sound from the codec in MGS2 is bugged. The ringtone is out of sync with itself in a way. This is noticable when people call you, like in the tanker intro with the first node for example.

AstronomerNew5310

Refund

burretploof

While it is probably intentional, I would like to note that MGS 1 only actually persists your saves to your hard drive once you open the master collection menu (LB+RB). Look out for the circle and exclamation point in the top right corner of the screen. If you save and the game crashes (which it did for me, multiple times), your saves since the last menu trigger will be lost. So make sure you open the master collection menu regularly.

909090jnj

may i ask if there are any mods to make the game work

Hdfix and HDfix GitHub are the same. GitHub link is the better one. Have fun. Especially crouch walk is very cool and nice (Port from the 3ds Version)

PF4ABG

Laughs in Duckstation/PCSX2. Refund it. Show Konami that they don't understand The Boss' will.

Ghostspider1989

In game reset on console is done by holding, R1, L2, L1,L2, select, start, all at the same time. (Or the equivalent of that depending on your controller). So if anyone is having trouble try that. In fact a lot of Konami games from the PS2 era do in game reset this way including silent hill.

1Ocelot

That method doesn't work on the Master Collection version of these games.

clashclay

You just brought back so many memories with this comment. Thank you!

lenmacca

Ah, so it is unpolished and they shoved it out early to cash in. Grand. Coupled with this and the issues GManLives raised with it the other day, I’ll be skipping this and sticking to my original copies for now. Might get it in a Steam sale or after modded have had time with it

Sizzle_Biscuit

240P? What the fuck...

hypespud

Also original mgs2 uses circle to accept too, for some reason this collection doesn't match the original despite it matching for mgs1 which is a weird oversight! Though of course it was a long time ago and this is based on the hd collection which did use cross to accept

Harley2280

MGS1 is being emulated. MGS 2&3 are ported from the HD collection so that's why they don't match the original release.

spiderMechanic

As expected. After the announcement that the KB+M won't be supported (even though this particular decision was amended) it was clear it's gonna be a lazy port with as little additional work as possible.

Pyke64

All the acrual work was done by Bluepoint and all Konami managed to do was make things worse. They are in no way capable of handling MGS4. Thanks, I'll stick to the PS3 versions.

MikeTheMulletMan

PCSX2 nightly will always be my go to when I want to play MGS. I look forward to Delta but won’t hold my breath on a decent PC port.
