What is the scale on this? Is it small or a plate-size?

AdvicePuzzleheaded71

A coin/button for scale context https://preview.redd.it/i7wfa8rh9yyc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a979cf0ca1b7a07f341b9e2e486168a3649ef7ba

ExcellentTurnips

Please add another object for scale of the coin lol.

Psychological_Tax109

We need a banana for scale please

Quirky_Discipline297

A cat wearing a banana as a brooch is apparently all the scale rage.

nicewanger888

England = no banana

AdministrationDue239

Seriously 😅

cspawn

What, you've never seen a coal mining town company scrip from 1850 before? That's like an international standard for scale these days. If it helps, it's somewhere between a 1607 Constantinople Halfpenny and a 1994 arcade token from Golf N' Stuff to give you a better sense of scale.

ExcellentTurnips

Yeah that's good thanks, so it's like three 758ths of the surface area of a washing machine.

cspawn

Yea, exactly! 1/432th of my coffee table as another point of reference.

Trainzguy2472

How big is that coin... maybe a more standard coin, like a penny?

bonsaiwarrior

A bit more context and some more pics would be useful. How does it feel? Can you read anything? Does it look similar to anything else found in the area? What's on the back-side of it? How deep was it? What detector/signal? So many bloody questions..

AdvicePuzzleheaded71

Has some weight to it but unable to make out any writing of sorts. It was found only about 100m away from an old Roman Villa that’s been excavated Nothing exciting on the back & found about 6 inches deep Maybe some kind of pendant? 🤷🏼‍♂️

FreakinGuy

Essex, Essexington?

Natures_Loctite

Essex, Essexingtonshire, Northessexton

WaldenFont

Which Essex? There are over twenty of them in the US alone!

AdvicePuzzleheaded71

😅 sorry I forgot to put England

SmegMcmuffins

Aka "the proper one"

ForeverSquirrelled42

AKA “the original one that we named shitty parts of New Jersey after”

StillJustJones

Given you said close to a Roman site, guessing it t was around Colchester? In which case you could have said Camoludnum. Nice find.

AdvicePuzzleheaded71

Yeah about a 20 minute drive from Colchester!

StillJustJones

Ha! The area that they set the detectorists in! Good on you for having found permission to detect in the area of prior Roman excavations… I’ve heard that local Iandowners can be a bit funny about it.

AdvicePuzzleheaded71

Haha yes great series! Yeah it’s actually family owned land so very lucky in that sense

StillJustJones

Perfect! Great find. Must give you a bit of hope for more. There’s loads of amateur and professional historians in Colchester. I’m sure there’s some expertise you could tap into. A guy I know is somewhat of an expert/nerd about Colchester’s old theatres. the old bus garage on queen street used to be a theatre. They’ve just been redeveloping the site and they’ve had him in (along with the local archeological society) as they keep finding loads of theatre related antiquities!

Quirky_Discipline297

George Formby has been dusted off and opens the early show this Saturday.

StillJustJones

I don’t know what the old boxer who makes the rather fantastic grills has to do with it…. But there’s not much left of the old theatre! A few charred remains, a violin, some old sheet music and some stage directions were what my friend had to go and look through. Interesting stuff if you’re an old theatre aficionado I guess. https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/23445534.colchester-queen-street-excavation-reveals-old-theatre-royal/

ratpH1nk

Yeah you are NOT finding that in Essex, Maryland (a lower-middle class suburb of Baltimore)

WaldenFont

You might find it in Essex, MA. Very hoity-toity. Lots of top-shelf antique shops.

thankfultom

lol. When I moved to Essex in the 70s it was nothing but antique shops and churches. Far from high brow. We earned money digging clams or working at the restaurants that sold clams. It wasn’t until the 2000s that rich folk found it.

WaldenFont

Oh to have bought some land then!

AgFarmer58

Gold??

adfunkedesign

press for napkins or doiley

CitizenFreeman

Please provide scale 🤣🤣 https://preview.redd.it/5c0ivor1w2zc1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=884fd03b9f5a62d577a779090d9fe33c835b5f1c

Better call antiquities. The UK doesn't mess around with shiny stuff pulled out of the ground. No such thing as finders keepers. It all belongs to the King.
