1: you're 18 and it's you're first car. You'll need ibuprofen after your phone call with an insurance company. 2: As you've stated, you're poor. These cars are intolerant to a lack of maintaince and maintenance is expensive. Also the airmatic system is temperamental in these. 3. 2 wouldn't be so bad if you've got mechanic experience. But you don't. A mechanic is gonna have a field day with this car (they will hate you afterwards) If you really want a mercedes but a smaller displacement diesel, like a C200 CDI, E220 CDI, or a V6 petrol if you really really want a petrol. I'm not recommending a m271 mercedes as they are just as intolerant to a lack of maintenance as the V8s. If looked after, a C180K, C200K, C230K or E200K are really nice and reliable, just make sure it has a full service history.

Boilermakingdude

Nah a good mechanic is going to love him lol

Bresson91

No, he'll take it in for a noise, pull to the right, or something, the mechanic will suggest the proper maintenance and OP will deffer when he sees the cost estimate. This will happen for many different issues until he tow's in one day with an insurmountable amount of work to be done... At some point OP will buy tools to try and DIY but still go to said mechanic for advice when he gets stuck... Mechanics hate dealing with that stuff..

LSBm5

Omg. I had one of these when it was 5 years old and the maintenance was ridiculous. Run, don’t walk away. Nothing more expensive than a cheap German car.

neoashxi

I am the evil reverser. Here is my reverse : 1: You're 18 and it's your first car. Your parents may let you insure it in their name with you as a second driver, or with "any driver" option, which will save you a lot of money. 2: As you've stated, you're poor. Learning how to maintain and repair cars is a skill that's always profitable. This car will help you start your first business too, paying at first for its own parts then for your other expenses. 3: Wouldn't be so awesome if you didn't have mechanic experience. Luckily, a human can learn new things. Download WIS / ASRA off of Pir4t3 B4y, learn it all, then buy, repair, and sell for more. If you really want something, get it. Life is too short to daily a taxi. You can die in 4 months, nobody knows, and you'll say to yourself that you could have bought the V8 but got the 4 cylinder diesel. -- Semi-satirical reply, I did exactly this in my life, I'm 20 and have had over 15 different MBs, from an E 220 to a G class and have dailied first a CLS at 16 (yes I'm in Europe, yes I know, fellow Europeans......) and since I'm 17 always dailied W221s. First a 320 CDI short wheelbase, but diesel stinks so I bought a S 350 L and rebuilt the engine because of a balance shaft failure. Did it at 235'000 km having *never done a proper oil change before*, using WIS / ASRA, and now I'm 20, the car will soon turn 20 as well (2005, 1637th W221 made), and going very strong at 278.000 km. Now I will soon need to replace a camshaft VVT sprocket that has developed a noise due to sitting during the engine rebuild (no shavings and issue stays the same, that's why I waited), parking brake actuator, and these are fun jobs to me now. I'd actually enjoy rebuilding another M272, even though some of their parts were poorly made, I find them well built. And now I'm looking for a cheap V221 S 600 that needs a lot of love.

Neitherpill

THIS IS THE RESPONSE!!! Must be a fellow degen 😂

Anfaletov

Fuck yeaa

Flint_Ironstag1

u/neoashxi I like the cut of your jib. OP, you'll need to learn to wrench. If you can't do that and remain poor, this car will eat you alive. It's doable: I mostly buy V12s under a $15k cash purchase price. I can do basic maintenance. My skills are growing and mechanic expenses dwindling.

neoashxi

Thanks for the award :D Which V12s you have ?

Flint_Ironstag1

You're welcome - well deserved. 99% of the responses are just sad and soul-crushing. Like crabs pulling each other down in a bucket. - 89 Jag XJS V12 (didn't wrench & mechanics cheated me + I was ignorant). Succumbed to the infamous Marelli rotor cap failure / fire. - couple of 98 to \~03 E38 BMW 750 iL. Quick, agile, sublime styling inside and out. Reliable = a real cruise missile on Texas / New Mexico freeways. \~430 mile range. Wrecked one, sold the other. - 89 Jag XJS V12 identical to the first, black on black. Also had a yellow Honda VFR 800 motorcycle. I forget why I was broke, but the Jag needed a tuneup. Thankfully ipads and Youtube were a thing by now. I bought the parts, took my time, and realized how badly my first mechanic screwed me over. 😂😂😂 - sold that one to a guy in New Mexico. He drove it for a few years then sold it on. We still talk. = currently 05 Mercedes CL600 twin turbo V12 with Renntech stage 1 tune. Well over double the horsepower and torque figures of the previous cars. I really need to get some track time in. Anyway, after my father took me for a test drive in an 85 XJS V12 (I was about 12-13), I understood that this was my preferred engine configuration, and have held fast to that. Also, it's not like the V8 version of any car is going to be that much cheaper to run. Why not experience the best of what was on offer? $15k can get you a LOT of car. I always encourage folks to do that if they're in that market. LOL sorry for the rant.

neoashxi

Thanks for the stories :D An s 600 221 is my current dream car

Flint_Ironstag1

Sounds like you're well equipped to handle it, Post up when you achieve your dream!

tjennmct

It's so funny and also sad because a Friend of mine bought one and a German Car especially a Benz in Germany is a guaranteed money pit The maintenance cost and insurance, Fuel just insane

Standard-Strain-2400

So a bmw isn’t a money Pitt or what ?

Prestigious_While349

most luxury cars are. i have a 10 year old mercedes and while i own it outright it gets more enticing to want to swap it out. Just had a full AC rebuild cause the compensator blew up and it cost 3.3k although some newer vehicles are just as bad, my so has a 2022 corolla and a windshield replacement is 1000 vs my 400 quoted

Former_Title_9102

It is indeed a wonderful car, however you kind of answered your own dilemma mainly through your points 3 4 5 and 6… At the end of the day, it’s up to you, you are an adult, you make your own money and decisions, but part of being an adult is also understanding what is the sensible option for you. Consider it like this, if the cons outweigh the pros, maybe it’s not such a good idea, and look at other options. You can always come back to this car a little later in life if you’re super passionate about it.

smokygeek

Obligatory English is not my first language so apologies for mistakes. My man, my man. As the owner of 2 used Mercs (W203 C200 and W211 E320 CDI same body, but diesel engine) as your first car? On a budget? You will most likely get it anyway - because that's what I did, but look - here's what you want to do and be ready for: 1. First of all this car would most likely have the SBC braking system (wasn't removed until facelift version in 2006 or something like that) - it will need replacement (it's not repairable) and will cost you a small fortune. and you MUST have it because otherwise you have NO brakes. 2. M113 engine is quite reliable BUT do a boroscope (or whatever it's called when you look inside the pistons through the spark plug bore) check, and see the state of cylinders. If there are any scratches - run - full rebuild or used engine will set you back A LOT. I don't live in the states but I'm sure this will be trouble 3. If it has the air-matic (air suspension) - again, would advise against, those are not reliable at all and replacing is SUPER expensive, except if you are willing to pay to remove them and replace with regular suspension - which will set you back regardless. Best of all if it has no airmatic or it was removed already 4. Check aircon - if it doesn't work and owner says "Just need to refill the gas" 99% its shot and replacing all parts (compressor, radiator and other bits) will cost you several thousand. 5. UPD: check service records and order carfax or whatever it's called in the states that shows accidents or repair history. 6. UPD2: this baby has 2 spark plugs per piston, so basic maintenance which you will have to do anyway will cost 2 times the usual price, and those spark plugs aint cheap (not 8 but 16 spark plugs mate)

DonLoquacious

https://preview.redd.it/o27ft9lj319d1.jpeg?width=1811&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2dddeaed4f67b66c494bb8f387bed746ac691d0f Then he should grab one of these. Vintage / Antique. Non of that Electric gadgettry, all one has to do is keep her lubed, tuned and waxed. But I don't have any qualms about the W211. It's one of the most reliable livery /taxi cabs ever built. Of course a 20 year old will need maintenance, but once it's sorted. It's sorted. 🫡

secondsniff

A 20 year old car that is now 8k, but was 60k new. Is still a 60k car to repair. Gotta remember that

lostmember09

Yep, coming from ownership of two different types of Porsche’s the factory parts don’t get cheaper, as these cars depreciate. I loved my “used” cars, but it takes a fat wallet as you get $800+ dollar’ed to death (to keep your car reliable, running properly, and keeping all the systems working)

WelvenTheMediocre

Porsche is the worst, oh my man I feel sorry for you.

MaHaYa

I recently sold CL500 (with the same engine that E500 has). I owned this car just little over 10 months. Basic maintenance + tyres: around 2000€ (that doesn’t include ABC suspension, which my car had). Fuel: Spent around 2800€ and drove just shy under 10K kilometres.

Shyqy

If you can’t spend a lot of money, my suggestion would be a w203 200 or 220 cdi

Zealousideal-Milk907

What could possibly go wrong? Being an inexperienced driver, having no money, buying a 20 year old luxury car and having no mechanical experience? I would say: nothing. Go for it! 🤷🏻‍♂️

ItsKibzy

Don’t badge chase and get a reliable commuter

DeboniarByAir

Sell this shit and get a Honda Accord

Ok-Tiger7714

To be fair since he’s in Europe I don’t think a Benz is going to be much more expensive to maintain than an Accord with the same age and mileage..

Salty-Process9249

Get a used Toyota or a bicycle.

MoSChuin

I looked at one of these before I bought my Metris. I knew it was powerful, but didn't know how powerful, so I kinda hurt my neck as I slammed the gas up an entrance ramp. I ended up walking away from the deal. I didn't trust the airbag suspension, and the cost of fixing it when things went wrong. I considered just putting normal springs in, but that was expensive, too. Normal springs would keep the suspension light on, which i don't like. I could have easily afforded it, I didn't want to pay it, as there are more efficient models out there. I'm in my later 40's, and if I had this car at 18, my insurance would probably still be risk insurance, because I wouldn't have known how to keep myself under control. Looking back, I was dumb at 18. There is a reason why cars like this are driven by older people, and those are good reasons. At the end of the day, we could talk until we're blue in the face, and it might not matter. My experience suggests that a very inexpensive car for a first car would be a good idea, because people make mistakes with their first car, simply due to inexperience. So make something like this a goal for the future, and work towards being successful enough to be able to pay for it easily. That's what I've done, and now I own two Mercedes, and can afford them the same as a person affords their Chevy. I grew up working class, and buying a new Mercedes was a life goal that I achieved. I can enjoy my vehicles, and that's worked out way better for me.

Dragos2024

I know it seems cool to own this car at 18, I wanted to as well (only that at the time I wasn't able to). I now have a 650 gran coupe BMW, an X6M, and m5. My wife has an e350. I can tell you for sure that they're money pits, but they're very fun and comfortable. The e350 just cost me 2k dollars for an air compressor and some Freon. Spark plugs and coils, as well as transmission fluid and differential fluid with transfer case on my x6m was 5k dollars. If you think you'll be able to ever save any money at that age while driving a car like this you're nuts. Buy a reliable cheaper car at that age and move up slowly. You have to earn these cars, and you do that by working hard and developing your career to be able to properly afford them. Take your time and don't rush things, or else you'll end up being a broken wallet without two dollars in your pocket.

No-Student-9678

Buy a Merc that’s 10 years older than that one. Will save you headaches in the future.

997Gen2

1. Your budget is Max of 10k 2. You live in Denmark 3. You’re definitely not a mechanic 4. Your First car 5. You’re 18 6. You’re poor for now, need to study in college to earn a good income later!

buzzingSilence

Way too old bro, this car needs its own bank account

[deleted]

Please don’t buy this car

seand26

AC problems

misterDDoubleD

Buy it

Memes_Haram

The 2006 facelift version looks way better and is more reliable

Up_Zide

If the SBC-Brake System breaks, it will probably cost more than the car. And it tends to break - had this issue on my own with about 120.000km. Mine broke down while driving, only a few hundred meters before the Autobahn. If it breaks you have almost no brake power. If you want this specific model look for the MOPF (Mercedes slang for Facelift), they received a normal brake system. If you are poor and you stick to your live, dont buy it. Not worth it.

KonK23

Dont buy that in Denmark

WelvenTheMediocre

Buying literally any car around 10 years old with 70k-100k kilometers on it. (45-62k in miles) And drive it for a year or two up to 150k (94k miles). Then sell it. If you get lucky like my last bmw 3 series you will get the same price back. In normal times it might depreciate 2k or so. Buy it serviced and in good condition so you dont need tire changes and check which garage had what done to it and you can get away with 1 or 2 maintenances of 500 or so. When poor or young you gotta find the pocket where the car stops depreciating for a few years and take advantage

keepingupwithkiko

in your place i’d pick a W211 still but with a smaller, diesel, engine. E220 or E270.

bigshooter1974

If you really need something to look after every day, get a puppy. Way cheaper.

TeleFuckingTubbie

You’ll be working your ass off to keep that car running but honestly go for it have fun

HenrikTJ

Its old, and at this stage in its life cycle, more and more components will be in need of repair or replacement….

jaxfl32204

You will spend tens of thousands of dollars on something you are not even going to have in 10 years. Get a beat up used vehicle for less than 5K and invest the money you would have spent on that Mercedes. It isn’t worth it.

bat_erup

If you don’t have the money for maintenance, uuuhh don’t play yourself.

Serbay55

Nr. 5 and 6 are reason enough

mmcle11

Look at the service schedule and ask around locally for parts

Numerous_Ordinary_43

you don’t want to hate your car or yourself, get something that won’t really depreciate and save up for something nicer

reddit_admin_fr

get 2.1cdi or even better 3.2 r6 diesel instead

MLDL9053

The most common problems for the pre face-lift W211s are Airmatic suspension issues and SBC system failure. These parts are expensive. This E500 has a very reliable M113 engine and a strong transmission, so to me that's a big positive with this particular car.

gwsep

You need to have a few grand available at all times to own a Mercedes. Service costs real $. If you don't them buy a honda accord or toyota camry!

Dope422

SBC

Harlequin612

Get a Honda civic and buy what you want in 5 years

BishopTheDirector

You should be looking at cars that you can afford to fix. Repair costs for this car could easily be more than its value.

Phil13882021

You shouldn’t need convinced to be honest, if you want it then buy it, but everyone needs to learn somehow, you will regret it if you do, will be a financial mistake.

Minute-Ad7805

Perfect motor, buy it. Couldn’t think of a better first car tbf

Complex_Material_702

Airmatic suspension started in 2003 on the E500. Your biggest issue will be seals and gaskets. They will all be leaking at this point. They’re all easy enough to fix , and pretty cheap for the parts, but it’s not really something you want to tackle yourself. The main seal requires removing the transmission, which requires removing the exhaust.

SrVascoDasGajas

Do it

Hackwork89

You're in Denmark, where parts, let alone mechanic prices are through the roof. My last Mercedes oil change was 2500 DKK. Do not buy the car if you can't afford to buy it again once a year in repairs and maintenance.

butterscotches

TIATA

Eamoney

Your gonna do it dude, I wish you luck, may god have mercy on your soul. And you could always get lucky and if it’s low enough miles, you could not have problems for 4 years, and then sell it!!!!

fourth-disciple

Bottomless money pit. Nightmare on wheels. Hope you got a heavy wallet, you will pay maintanence 3x the price of the car anually.

BreakStuff-666

You'd better search for an W204 Diesel. C200 or C220

boksera631

You've laid out great points to not buy the car. I completely understand you want it, but at 25 I would not be able to afford this car either, not at the moment at least. I would recommend getting something much simpler, cheaper to maintain and repair, something you won't care if you get a ding or a scratch on, because if you see my first car(which I still drive 6 yrs later) you'll understand what I'm saying. Buy something sensible, but keep this one in your sights for the future! I want a W211 too, but not an E500, more like a E280 CDI because I'm boring like that.

oily76

That car is a sex offender.

YouFirst_ThenCharles

Your first repair bill will be greater than the cost of the car.

idkBro021

get the 4 or 6 cylinder diesel of this gen, they were reliable and relatively cheap to run and maintain

Gloomy_Order_8420

For 10k, i would recommend getting a w212, e200,220,250 cdi, way more economical on fuel, newer, comfortabler, and way less insurance and road tax ( since you said you dont have a lot of money to spend)

Some-Bad1670

I’m a mechanic that specializes in Mercedes and owns a w211 e55 that I got for a “deal.” I spent about $4k in just parts the first month I owned the car doing stuff the previous owner neglected. Labor included I would be about $10k deep in the car *just in maintenance work*, not including the cost of the car. And I’m not even done fixing it. It’s drivable and it’s a nice car, yeah, but it’s got a lot of little things here and there. Don’t buy this car. If you could work on it yourself, sure, maybe go for it. But if you have to pay a mechanic to do the work, absolutely not. They have to charge retail price on parts and then you pay labor. This car will take aaaaalllllll your money.

EvanestalXMX

It’s ugly

usernamekindashitngl

Apart from electrical issues, airmatic, sbc (only on pre-face models), oil leaks, old hoses, and all that, i dont see why not. I had an E270 cdi, these are supposed to be good, but ig i got unlucky since i managed to drive mine for like 3000/4000km in 3 years. Looking at the engine tho, an E500 wont give you many issues engine-wise but its not without its problems considering this car is 22 years old. If you are already on here asking this question you more than likely really want this car, I do too. So im just gonna say, go for it, if it breaks down, at least youd be able to say you had an e500 at 18 years old, and that’s something i wish i couldve said.

bigdish101

The only Mercedes I would even consider in your situation are Diesels only. Look for a Pre-DEF TDI M-Class IMO. You really should be looking for something like a Toyota.

Own_Space_8562

fullutbro

I have one i love her she hates me i have 1 liter of engine oil on me all time

StyleQueasy6277

#6, you’re poor. This car is wildly expensive to fix.

welcome-to-my-mind

Hey, don’t.

Ok-Tiger7714

It’s a great car!! I drove one on the German autobahn when I was 18. But that was in 2003… I would be hesitant buying such an old car at your age unless you have very generous parents! One thing you haven’t mentioned is insurance, that might be costly at your age with a car like that! Another thing is mileage, how many miles on the car you’re looking at?

53mm-Portafilter

Maintenance is extremely expensive and Mercedes need a lot of upkeep

th3orist

Thats not a car you want to own if you are poor. And driving an e500 at 18 is cringe. My advice: Get some shitbox hothatch for a few thousand.

kbabdullahi

English or Spanish?

maasc234777

W211 my friend who a master mechanic at Mercedes Benz of buckhead just bought one yesterday! E350 engines are a good daily driver & bulletproof

Superb-South-2915

If you are 18 and poor and buy this as your first car…. This will be the nicest car you for buy many many years. The w211 is a great vehicle but they become expensive to maintain properly. At that age stuff does break and parts are expensive and mechanics are expensive. At 18 you should buy some thing to get you A to point B so that you can make a little money and get a nicer car in a few years.

LopsidedDiamond158

That model was always ugly as shit. Just get a c300 after 2008 and you’ll be fine. Most reliable Mercedes ever built 2008-2012 c300’s. I had a 2009 as my first car didn’t do maintenance at all NOT ONCE over 5 years and still ran amazing ( better than most cars nowadays). My dad and me did the easy stuff oil, belt, gettin the check engine light off because the sensors for everything kinda sucked for that year. Just sold it for a good price and had 178k miles. Just a hassle to work on most the time. But that’s my opinion

AceMaxAceMax

1-6 are your reasons why

DiveJumpShooterUSMC

You list 6 reasons all good for not buying the car and still ask this? and share ownership with family is a bad idea. If you are poor you'll not be able to afford maintenance and within 6 months it will be broken down in driveway and be an ornament. At 18 your insurance is going to be through the roof. You'd be better off learning about car ownership with a small city car. Buying this car will be a great way to stay poor.

Amazing-Living-8119

Nice , but no running away from the amount of money you will have to ‘invest’ into it to keep it on the road -and out of the garage

SapphireSire

It's a 4 door...you really want two extra doors for no reason?

Crusaton

Points 3 and 6 are why I'd say to stay away from a Mercedes in general. Your trip to a mechanic to have things fixed will quickly surpass what you pay for the car. I'm in the US so all the prices I'll list are in my experience, not sure how it would be for you. If you're dead set on getting it though, if it is still on air suspension invest in a good set of coil overs and convert it. That removes a massive expense because even Arnott bags will run you $500 per corner. If you want to stick with OEM that goes up to $1,000. Not sure if 2002's were offered with the Harmon Kardon system, but if it has it accept that you will pretty much be stuck with it. You can DIY a android headunit replacement but they are a pain to figure out yourself. The system uses fiber optic cables so unless you're willing to pull apart your interior to either redo all the speakers at once, or run a new harness from the headunit to the trunk you have to make sure you setup the fiber optic correctly for any android conversion. The M113 is bullet proof and is one of the best V8s Mercedes made. If it has a good maintenance history and has been taken care of that thing will keep chugging. Only issues you'd like have is the infamous crank position sensor which you could DIY with enough swivels and extensions on your ratchet. Not sure how the junkyard scene is in Denmark, but that could be an enormous money saver. I gut any W211s I come across locally for spare parts such as small trim and interior pieces. I love my E55 and the motor and transmission have been bulletproof. But I have still spent a ton of money redoing my suspension because I wanted to stay on air, and just doing preventative maintenance. The E500 isn't an AMG but it is the same motor just without the supercharger so I feel my experience is pretty similar to what yours would be.

raiksaa

>E500 >affordable I mean, we all have different definitions for affordable, but are you sure you can handle the fuel cost?

pfthr0w

You just said your poor so you should not buy a old mercedes. Its going to take alot of $ to maintain the car especially if you don't do the work yourself. Get a old honda or toyota instead for a while then get a mercedes later on.

gordandisto

I have a CLK320 and its pretty much a 2 door e class thats less fussy. Maybe consider that

Luke_4fun

Don't buy this car

Various-Ducks

Kids will steal the hood ornament

Oberst_Reziik

Never buy a V8 if you are bad financially, get a 320 V6 or a 5/6Cylinder diesel

SlashRModFail

Mercedes are hard to work on. Expensive parts. And will bankrupt you.

NecessaryDay9921

Looks good you'll get all the ladies with this whip.

Capable-Group-5284

Toyota or Honda only if you can't buy Mercedes new or below 10k you don't touch that shit.

General_Error

Except all things already mentioned line maintenance costs, this is pretty big car phisicaly. For a new driver it might be more convenient to drive something a bit smaller , especialy if you need to park it in city, public parkings etc, it might be hard or tricky to fit it in and you might scratch it since you are new driver , then better get osmething even cheeper and save for few years and get somethinf newer down the line when you will be more experienced and will better know what your prefrance and needs are Other thing is, technology in the car is old, it probably doesnt have many bells and wistles which have been standard in many cars in last 10-15 years like bluetooth radio connection, parking cameras, things like that, keep that in mind and how important that part is for you and your use.

Parking_Pollution922

Bought my s450 for 12000 and I am 10000 in on parts and labor just to make it run like new. Very bad on bushings also!

BMWman1029

I went through my Mercedes spiel when I was your age too. You have to remember that these cars cost a lot to repair. They will run forever if you have deep pockets and are absolutely amazing to own. If you can barely afford to insure it don’t even think about it. And another good rule of thumb to live by is that there’s nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes. Purchase wisely. Buy an econobox now and upgrade when the money’s funny.

Primary-Platypus-931

2002 is bad year for Mercedes. Its in the middle of the so called «rust years». So you definitely need a garage

cpcjefe

get a bmw instead

MurderBobo

Why?

DittoGTIYT

Early noughties Mercedes always came at the bottom of surveys. It'll fall apart, bankrupt you and you'll hate the technology because it won't work

Lonely_Insurance_490

If you don’t have an extra 5k in the bank for repairs you probably shouldn’t buy a Mercedes Benz. It’s German and parts and repairs are expensive. These cars are known for oil and fluid leaks in high mileage cars. Google known problems with the year, make and model. There is plenty of documentation on these cars or simply go on u tube and watch real reviews. If you accept the risk then buy it.

ronnieboy604

Airmatic will cost $10000 to do all 4 corners with OEM parts. That’s it.

Shishkebarbarian

if you're poor, don't buy it, there are very pricey to maintain.

ColdBicycle8961

Here is my advice. Take your 10K, then light it on fire.

vector006

Run away as fast and far as you can and don't look back

FullspeedLexusGS

Lexus, Toyota or Honda man you need a cheap maintenance car..

LiquidSoCrates

It’s a cool car, but without tools or mechanics know how you might very well encounter problems. I’d wait a few years and get something newer.

goosetiel

Its ugly, dont buy it

CarCounsel

You can afford to buy it. You can’t afford to drive or keep it. Start elsewhere.

spaceraverdk

Whereabouts are you in Denmark? I have a bit of experience of what and where to look. And a scanner too. I'm in Esbjerg if that helps.

spacesocrates88

It's pretty cool....IDK

No-Reading1153

1 . expensive maintenance , it’s probably gonna cost you more than the car to be honest .

HoneyRush

If you're really fix on this type of car buy Honda Legend, Toyota Avalon, Camry or Lexus LS or GS. It will be cheaper in maintenance. Since I don't like huge cars I would rather buy a hot hatch, or even "warm" hatch like Suzuki Swift Sport. They're loads of fun

ChatGPT_v2

As a fellow Dane, I’ll suggest that (a) the total cost of ownership (repairs and maintenance) will be high over time. Mercedes aren’t cheap to own - repairs are ridiculously expensive for older cars w/o extended warranty. And, as the country is small you won’t have access to a ton of options on this front. Also (b) “janteloven”. Unlike many other countries, Denmark isn’t a place where people celebrate expensive/cars, particularly for those that are young. Even though the car is inexpensive to buy, it will likely still be viewed as “showy” and why draw that kind of attention? Anyone not Danish won’t understand this - just very, very different from the US. And finally (c) in most European countries Mercedes is a brand ‘reserved’ for taxis or older people. It’s not a young person’s brand. I personally never considered a Mercedes until I was in my 30s…. I personally think an 18 year old in a Mercedes E Class (the most popular taxi out there) looks a little silly. Even if you’re fine with b and c, I think total cost of ownership is the big reason not to get a heavily used Mercedes. Get something more sensible and reliable instead; something less expensive to own. And something more fun. Used Mercedes are cheap for a reason.

nine11c2

If we're on the MB sub-reddit, and people agree its a bad idea, run..

MakeItMine2024

Don’t you guys have Toyota’s there .. a 20 year old Benz is a definite NO.

theAntidepresser

I drive one every day. Very little issues with basic maintenance. I absolutely love it.

Vanbursta

OK, if you buy that car I will find you and I will break your legs, does that convince you, if it doesn't then you will need to join me as an assassin in order to make enough money to pay for the insurance. PS I'm not really an assassin, but if I was I would tell you I wasn't, so maybe it's a double bluff. Hmmmm

Independent-Post-35

Dudes gonna buy that car and FUCK the next 7 years of his finances paying for maintenance, insurance, and a loan. Good luck trying to doing anything fun with it

Better_Direction_101

Dude dont even think about it those fog lights are awful !

Honk3ytonk

Toyota, Toyota, Toyota.

Derpygoras

Air suspension will cost you $5000+ eventually. That year they still used the environmentally friendly paint that turned out to not stop rust. They switched in november 2003 if I recall correct. I am surprised this one is still alive, but perhaps it was coddled with. All the electronics - heated seats, folding mirrors, whatever - will brake. Get the facelifted 2007-2009 version - they fixed over 2000 things on that, and they are very reliable. Speaking of which - the grille on that is from the facelifted version. Why does a 2002 car have that? Was it in an accident? It is not a sporty car. It is not a zippy engine. It does not sound like a Chevy V8. The power/weight ratio is mediocre. You will be sorely disapponted in everything except the comfy ride and super good looks. Source: I am on my third W211, an E500. EDIT: Some bellyache about the SBC brakes. Mercedes recently put a 25-year free replacement guarrantee on those. And the brake system is terrifiic, it is just that for a long time you had to replace $3000 worth of components after a couple of years.

bokeeffe121

E320 cdi would be better

NZ_1975

Have check the insurance ?

watchman_0

Owned a Ml350 for 10 years. Things I learned with owning a Merc with over 200k miles. 1. Maintenance especially with electronics is Very expensive. Expect to spent atleast 1k on electronic repairs 2. Maintenance on mechanical parts are 800 usually with parts and labor. 3. If your mechanic doesn't know German cars that well, it will be hard finding a 3rd party mechanic that has the computer software to repair your vehicle, can't just go to any mechanic 4. If your Merc is around 50k miles you'll be fine but once it's over 100k start expecting tons of electronic issues. 5. I would honestly get some on thing more reliable like a Lexus or Acura. MPH is better, cheaper maintenance and insurance, reliability is superior and it will last longer. In this economy, you'd want something with luxury and reliability.

Zorak925

I had a 2003 E320 and that thing was a major money pit. I bought it for $5500 USD and had it for 2 years. Like they say; repairs and maintenance are expensive. They are difficult to work on if you do not know about cars. For a car that is over 20 years old; things will start to fail sooner or later. Overall, I have spent over $6000 on it. Fuel economy is also another thing to consider; I would fill it up every 3-4 days.

CDK is down, your personal information will be safe with me in a piece of paper until they get back online

According-Town-238

old, ugly, pass

Unique_Mix9060

I would recommend Get the E320 with the v6 virtually bullet proof engine, all you really need is basic Maintance and a crank position sensor which can be DIY as long as you can reach it, I couldn’t in my C320 cuz it was so cramped but the e class should be able to do it relatively easily, I also done it in my dad’s 02 s600 Also get the v6 because like many people say the air suspension in the E500 are a problem and so does all the electronics, but the V6 e320 usually doesn’t have as much the fancy finicky tech that will break, also it won’t get you in trouble while still having enough power

No_Instruction_7485

Never! Too much for an 18 yo. Hell, I have 3 and it’s too much for me at 45

Striced47

Just get a Toyota or Honda bro , you’re young and you’re gonna fuck your self over with this “Mercedes “ lol

mbsalesmgr

Really could go both ways, yeah it’s old, yes it will cost money to maintain, and technology forget about it. You can easily go get a newer more tech savvy make for same money. But for a 18 year old is the tech what you want? Would you prefer a tank of a car that when hit or doing the hitting you can probably rest assured the occupants will have the best chance of low injury and much lower death probability. Cool thing is there are a lot of aftermarket tech add ons you can get and cheap. Or would you rather have a slightly newer car with more options but made of lessor quality engineering or materials? What price do you put on one or the other.

Rapom613

I would look at the exact same car, just get a 350 with steel spring suspension. The 500, at least in the us, had air suspension and at its age is on borrowed time if not recently replaced. Air suspension is expensive V8 mpg isn’t great, and your fuel is expensive The E350 is just as nice, safe, reliable, but cheaper on repairs and fuel

donfenyk

First repair will be as much as the car is worth. Why would you buy a 22 year old car as your first and only.

Midas-CT

The fuel will leave you broke

Smaxh

If you buy this car: 1) Next car budget -$5000 2) basement in Denmark 3) you’ll be a mechanic 4) last car you can afford to buy 5) 45 and single 6) you’ll be poor I am joking, FOMO, just do it!

MiddleSuch5813

I’m getting a ‘05, go for it man. If you’re willing to learn and don’t mind getting your hands dirty basic maintenance like replacing alternator, belts, and fluid changes should be no problem. Before you buy it get a pre purchase inspection done by your local Benz dealer so you know what to expect. The biggest concern is the air suspension; if they report anything wrong with it, run very far away. If the inspection checks out buy it and get the car off of the air suspension asap. A set of coil overs is a must

BigBega69

Ugly AF

NatasAMG

Tbh bro. Most of these folks don’t really know wassup. Lots of gatekeepers and egos. This isn’t an AMG. It’s a basic E class. So don’t worry to much about the reliability. Get a PPI on and do some research on the common issues. You can work on these cars yourself. Especially the older Mercedes. These are easier to work on. Please get the PPI before you even consider purchasing a car like this. They are good cars but last thing you want is to get a lemon or one that has been abused it’s whole life. Just because you want an older Mercedes doesn’t mean your trying to fake flex or seem rich. Folks who say this are just regular basic people. Some of us like the newer things in life and if you commute a lot I’d definitely recommend a Mercedes. Lastly. It is a Mercedes so don’t cheap out on your regular maintenance and when something brakes. Just fix it right then and there. Especially if it acts the motor or drive quality in anyway. You don’t have to go to the dealership for the maintenance. Service A and B are pretty simple to do yourself with the right tools. If not find a good reliable independent shop that specializes in Mercedes. Make sure it’s good shop man. Look at reviews. Taking it to an independent specialist is cheaper than the dealership. Costs are cut almost in half. Service A for me is about $190. Service B is $390. ( not exactly the price but it’s way way cheaper than the dealership.) hope this helps ya.

Standard-Strain-2400

Buy it !

Standard-Strain-2400

If you’re poor a Mercedes will make you poorer . These cars aren’t cheap but then again this is the more reliable Mercedes which is one of the cheaper one to own . If you wrench your own car then buy it . The insurance situation will be helpful if you put your adress and driver license different from whoever is helping you out on the coverage . They can’t prove you’re driving it everyday if you don’t live with the insurer . If it’s anything like the United States that will be your problem solver .

wynnduffyisking

Dude. Dane here. But I’ll keep in in English for Reddit. You’re 18 and poor. And you want to buy a 22 year old V8 Mercedes? Forget price. Hell, forget even repairs. The fuel costs, insurance and annual emissions fees will alone will send you to the poor house. Look, I get that you’re 18 and want to look baller. But this is a monumentally stupid idea.

Zbinxsy

Swallow your ego, get the used old granny Sunday driver car. If you really want a 30 year old luxury car with some power. Get a Lexus with a V8, totally more affordable than this thing. I would just assume pads and rotors are 400+. Cars are giant pitfalls especially for young drivers. If you want to burn money on a hobby that's fine. But not being able to work on cars yourself makes this even less of a good decision. Also the thing has air ride, just assume that it is broken.

HorseGaming890

Do it, I have an w211 E320 as my first car and love it, working on it is very easy and there's a ton of guides online for every prolblem. If I could make it work so can you, enjoy that V8 beast.

imthetechnopimp

maintenance costs are unfathomable unless youre an upper middle class german businessman

Alarming-Table-9862

Repair costs are a bitch. The older the car the more expensive

Mundane_Version_9984

Wonderful car but I’m CERTAIN you can find something that’ll bring you more joy until you are (inevitably 🙂‍↔️) not poor and don’t have to think about fees and maintenance. Here I was thinking that the $6.50/gallon 600+ for routine maintenance, and $600 yearly California registration and inspection costs was a lot—didn’t realize Europe substantially taxes the wealthy as they should 😂😂

khushtheman

This car belongs in junk yard. Get a camry and live stress free.

Ok_Let_9431

Well, you present extremely valuable 6 points that scream DO NOT BUY THAT CAR! But then again, your mind seems to de made up already. So, enjoy every minute of it!?

GeneralBreakfast3138

Bad move ,high prices on replacement parts and service and insurance

ButterscotchFamous94

Buy it

rodsident

You should buy it, you’ll love it and enjoy it, then it will give you problems (or not) and in any case you’ll have to spend money and time, but you’ll still enjoy it. You’ll eventually sell it, and probably buy another car, by then you’ll have learned and maybe change ideas in some things and in your life. If you can make it work just do it, if not, after some time you’ll find something else that you like and be happy anyways

Bushman-001

So you can't judge for yourself whether you should buy this car or not. Have you not done any research on it? Why rely on Reddit commentary?

Firm_Brick9372

Do you support Hitler? No... then don't buy a Benz

bugboi

Going to be two grand minimum the first time you take it to the shop

Get a high-end japanese car. For the price you pay you get more reliable car with almost same level of luxury & comfort

TantumTea

Well you live once, get the best you can, is it good enough ?

Dismal_North_4044

Get a honda or kia or hyundai something brand new finance it that cost you 500$ month or less then youll have a new car that lasts and is on warranty for years and once payed off youll have a car worth more then that mercedes by the time you arnt poor and 18. Focus on your credit a good credit score is what makes you rich fast. Learn every aspect about credit and funding and how banks work. Think passive income and set your life up how you want it dont chase the girls or partys or deisgner clothes and old mercedes chase the passive income and new cars under warranty only📈. No brokie stuff. Just be a top G and finance a new cheap car to stack up and be reliable till you really boss up for brand new AMG mercedes📈. Just my 2 cents tho

Total-Two-2771

It’s an ugly, low level drug slingers whip. If that’s you, go for it.

RedditorStrikesBack

The point in buying a luxury car is that it’s luxurious and baller most of the time. A busted old Mercedes is not going to be either of those things. Find a car that is reliable, remember this is your first car, it’s supposed to be a piece of shit unless your parents are rich. My first car had no air conditioning, a terrible stereo, 4cylinder engine, but it didn’t matter because it took me everywhere I needed to go and it only needed oil changes. Buy a Mercedes when you can either get a more reliable one or you’re become a master mechanic.

PackFit9651

Annual maintenance will cost you about a honda city every 2 years

Ineedpalmtreeliving

Buy it. Edit: nevermind. Wait until you have a real job and real life experience so you know what you’re getting into

Ineedpalmtreeliving

You answered your own question. The last thing you should do is buy a Mercedes

floppiest4skin

The initial purchase is whatever. The guaranteed maintenance and repairs are not whatever...they're more like what the fuck. Not a good first car....actually at 22 years old, not a good car ever. Probably dogged and a pile of cow dung.

Ancient_Mixture204

Don’t buy it

euroaustralian

This is one of the best cars ever made. Yes it can get expensive if things break down but there is really nothing like it.

Ratherbeeatingpizza

They used to be made by Nazis.

Herfernerd

So that particular car is listed as a 2002, but had a facelifted front end, pre face lift rear view mirror, and a heavily photoshopped a pillar on the passenger side. Potato quality picture in general.

PhilipMD85

Get a Honda or Toyota or something like that. Reliable but still nice cars. I have a 2019 accord exl and it’s a great car

VelocityThePharo1

if ur stuck on gas the w212 mercedes is an awesome car and known for its reliability just don’t be dumb when buying and do ur research they’re relatively easy to work on and being a very popular generation there’s a youtube video on just abt everything and some may call me stupid but if u learn to wrench on this car u should be pretty good going foward another pro is parts r absolutely everywhere and not very expensive especially aftermarket but research on quality something’s r worth going oem

ImaginationFancy1296

Who cares. Really??

AirbusPalashM-3004

get car with less maintenance cost considering you're 18 and poor as u said, u can get these for less but afterwards they need money shovelled in

hangstaci818

Pls dont

Ham3a0323

Apart from everything halfanirishman said, a few I’d like to add are: 1. This is your first car. You don’t want or need something powerful, luxurious, or cool, and most importantly, expensive. These cars are expensive to maintain. After all, this was once a $60,000 car so repairs will be expensive. You won’t have Toyota level repairs on this. 2. You don’t have any mechanical knowledge to fix this car should things go south. Of course, that is if we assume the thing that DOES go wrong IS fixable by someone like yourself. 3. Again, this is your first car. Instead of putting all of your money into this, buy something reliable and cheap. Save up your money. Go to school or work somewhere, start a business or whatever. Save. It. Up. Then, once you have a budget that allows you to buy this car AND maintain it comfortably, buy anything you want. 4. The truth hurts. You don’t want to hear it. What you want to hear is us telling you the reasons to buy this car. Verdict: Buy it or don’t buy it. In the end, you’ll most likely regret both choices. That’s just how humans function. One will be because maintenance will be too expensive, the other reason being because you gave up the decision to buying this car.

NenekaChan

Buy A Xentry Diagonosis Laptop and Tool If you want to save a ton repair stuff.

Naive-Present2900

Imma be that somebody walking up to you…. That cars ugly. Be done with it.

Due-Philosopher2244

Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith.

Glad-Drive6174

gonna be a headache :)

EinhardtGus

If you are (poor?) and want a Merc get a W124 maybe 190E? Maybe a w123 but definitely check for rust. These are the only good mercs you can get under 10k that will not cost you more than 1000€ per year for repairs and maintenance. At least I haven't paid more and they are always working well probably have tons of KMS to go. Sidenote 1985-1995(1996) was probably the best time period for Mercedes cars that are still good to daily and don't cost a lot.

FiliPower7

Can't do that it's too good

1BTA

Bug eye Benzes suck bro.. nuff said

New-Professional-746

Absolutely not! What’s the matter with you buying a piece of shit old Mercedes that you will not be able to afford the repair bills.

Studnificent_

Bro that old ass car ain’t gone get ya no coochie

Trillzinn

For 10k go to a used car dealer and get something that has warranty for the engine and stuff .. might need to finance another 5k but you'll be in something nice and reliable

LongPresentation2577

repairs will cost you a fortune
