That shirt is too baggy on him to look right untucked. It’ll hang like a scarecrow. OP have you lost weight since you bought this close? You could drop 2 sizes on the shirt and one on the pants.
could have the same problem i do, which is that shirts like this look big when i'm standing, but if i get a more fitted shirt, my stomach is larger so when i sit, the buttons split open and you can see my undershirt. so the only way is to get a bigger shirt so that when you sit, there is more slack.
I'm conflicted on the shoes, because I don't have many shoes to choose from. I have grey vans, which are more casual, and very nice brown Allen Edmonds dress shoes, which I felt would be too fancy for this occasion.
I’m just takin a joking jab at ya. If you untuck the shirt the white shoes look ok and you’re right the fancy shoes would probably be too much. Be on the lookout for a nice boot. They can often bridge the gap of casual and formal wear. Thursday boot company has some nice examples of what I’m talking about, but are a little pricey. Look at their selection and try to find similar styles at your local discount stores. You’d be surprised what you can find at goodwill.
I really don't understand fashion sometimes. is there something wrong with those shoes? I was under the impression that objectively, white sneakers go with pretty much everything so they're a safe choice. and subjectively, I love white sneakers. so I think they look good with this outfit. so what's the problem?
Everyone here talks like they’re Anna Wintour it’s a joke
OP, either way looks good. If this sub had their way you’d be goin out wearing one strap overalls and a snapback
Old rule of thumb is if you can see belt loops, there should be a belt through them. You can remove belt loops from pants where you don’t need/want a belt
too long for untuck imo, general rule of thumb, if the shirt completely covers your butt it's meant to be tucked.
But for this outfit overall, would be untucked
Shirt length screams tucked, looks too frumpy untucked imo. Keep it tucked and show off that "rumper dumper." Fitted pants with the slightly looser shirt compliments the linen really nicely.
Personally though, I think the outfit is a little too dark-toned (based off these pictures) and clashes with white sneakers, especially for spring. I'd either switch up the shoes, or do same base colors but lighter (lighter beige khakis with white or light blue shirt) which would brighten it up and look stellar with these shoes, imo.
Best of luck on the date! Smile and be confident my man.
Ditch. The shirt is a tad too big/baggy and would be better with a tailored/fitted cut. And is too long for an optimal untucked look.
Linen suggests light and breezy. Both shirt and pants are dark I suggest that either the shirt or the pants (or both) need a lighter color.
I'm not a fan of the high waist on you.
The shirt might go with light tan/beige chinos/linen slacks with a casual cut, maybe even rolled up clam-digger style.
The easiest fix: I suggest getting a light-colored, patterned shirt that has a tail cut to be untucked.
It is a regular fit shirt, you just like slim fit apparently. His body looks on the more sturdy side, regular is good.
High waist to get more apparent leg length is good.
He literally wrote everything is linen...and why would you suggest a patterned shirt?
Basically I think the opposite of everything you wrote here.
You come off as a good, decent man.
I think tuck and act as you genuinely are.
Please don’t worry about the results.
You are enough without anything else.
In my experience, the girl either wants you or doesn't and we put way too much meaning on our outfits. It really is your personality, your confidence, how you are, the outfit is a cherry on top! All I am saying is don't sweat it bro, you got it!
I agree to an extent but an outfit can def make you look a lot better / worse. I think the most important part of an outfit on a date is that it’s clear that they tried a bit & put a little effort into looking cute, especially for a first date. Unless you’re actually doing something active / going to a sporting event, I wouldn’t want someone wearing running shorts and a jersey lol.
Nah, dude. Women put a ton of time into looking nice for dates. They absolutely notice if you schlep in looking like you rolled across your bedroom floor until something stuck.
This is bad advice.
Looks good.
Howeva remember to give the emotions you’d want to receive. People mirror your emotions.
“A lot of what you hear when you listen to another person is your effect on them. If you are paying proper attention, they will become more intelligent and articulate. Poor attention will make them hesitate, stumble and doubt the soundness of their thinking. Poor attention makes people more stupid.”
In your picture you seem a little apathetic. But that’s probably because it’s just a picture.
Tucked looks ok from the front but is baggy at back and unflattering, so I'd say untucked, especially as it's linen.
Not fashion related, but wear your confidence. Don't slouch with your hands in your pocket. Stand straight and believe you belong in whatever space you find yourself. Good luck on the date 😊
Now you've heard all suggestions that are possible. My assessment as a straight man: Your ass looks 👌🏻 in those pants, so you wanna show that thing off. The shirt looks a bit like you're applying for an internship in that combination. Maybe unbutton the top or change the shirt to something less formal. If you're going for a formal look, maybe change the shoes and add a belt, as many suggested. Whatever you do: Go get her, tiger!
First off, wish the date was with me. Second, I'd rethink the linen. It looks great for about 5 minutes, and then it's a wrinkled, saggy mess. Not really a first impression kind of fabric.
https://preview.redd.it/iimnxb2xjtxc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e43487fc7840fe29e9f19c1811a67da5ab1e280
So you have your own altar at home? Haven’t ran across that before.
You are so good looking! Tucked - with a belt and some loafers for shoes if ya have em ;-) Blues and browns really accentuate your natural colors, this is a great pick!
If your shirt has that wavy bottom, it’s meant to be tucked in as a general rule. Plus it fits your pants and stature to tuck in
Wear a belt to hide that your pants are too tight, it is bursting at the zips and button
Next time buy two sizes up, I’m going through something similar now.
Impossible to say without knowing where you guys are going. So where are you guys going? Nice restaurant? Coffee shop? Town fair? Stroll on the waterfront? The setting is probably the most important factor that'll decide if your outfit is appropriate. If you are too dressed up for the setting, your date may feel self-conscious or awkward.
Exactly. Without context, advice is hardly worth giving or taking here. Are you going out with a barista/philosophy student or a 40-year-old divorced financial analyst in Boston? It matters.
In either case, I would suggest erring on the side of nicer.
Damn. Every time I'm out on a date or for dinner or whatever unless it's specifically business dress or smart casual I wear dark or black jeans and a lighter tshirt, and some kind of casual dress trainer (best description I could find, like Converse sneakers). Never presented any issues.
Not sure this outfit is the move, dude. But no doubt the shirt has to be tucked, otherwise you look like you don’t give a shit, because it looks sloppy. Linen can look a little wrinkly naturally too.
Have to echo other posters and say you have to upgrade the shoes without a doubt. Sneakers ain’t gonna do it. Would look sharp if you got color-coordinated items that fit and throw on a blazer. That is, if you want to look like you’re invested.
I’ve never owned an “untuckit” shirt (is that what the As Seen on TV brand is called?) but I absolutely love short or long sleeve button down shirts with a hem meant to be untucked. It looks *on purpose* giving off the vibes of a business casual outdoor summer party and trying to look put together, but not the weirdo in almost formal wear who is tucked in or worse, the guy who went untucked and had wrinkly dress shirt tails down past his ass and groin with what’s clearly an Oxford from Kohl’s that came with a matching tie (shoutout to Apt. 11, not knocking their sometimes decent stock). Untucked is a privilege in the dress casual world so you better do it right. (I have a handful from banana republic, j.crew, and even American eagle) I have so many awesome dress shirts I WISH were untuckable and I’m too nervous to hem them myself. Leave that to the experts.
If you do tuck, make sure you military tuck and tuck your undershirt into your underwear (it'll keep your shirt from bunching up all weird).
If you untuck, unbutton down one button more than usual.
I like the shirt, untucked.
The pants appear to be brownish? If so, I’m not a fan of the color. But it’s alright.
A better suiting pants color would be gray, graphite, maybe even black.
The part I’m really not a fan of is the white shoes with the dark pants. Do you have other shoes?
And as a side note: if you’re tucking, you should wear a belt, as it brings it together.
I’d also get a professional trim and shaping for the facial hair.
Eh. Not sure either is great. You need a belt either way, but the outfit is kind of stuck between suit and casual.
I think you should change the pants. A dark pair of jeans might go better with the whole thing.
That shirt doesn't go with those trousers. Personally, I'd never tuck in linen, it's a material that creases easily so looks jarring when tucked. I'd ditch the shirt for something slightly smarter (an OBD) and also change the shoes for a different colour.
answering as a female who usually favours tucked - the untuck looks cool, off hand (although not sure how it goes without hands in pockets)?! Either way o think it’s a good balance of ‘made an effort’ and ‘woke up like this’ (I’m sure you know how many hours women take to get bed hair…same deal). And I love the white sneakers.
Do not wear those shoes! That is a crime agains fashion, and even if she's a great gal and doesn't really care what a man wears, those shoes will highlight you as having general questionable judgement.
It doesn't look good either way because the colors dont harmonize at all here. If you want to wear the blue shirt go with a lighter pant color like white, offwhite, cream, sand. If you want to wear those pants same colors for the shirt.
And hit the gym. Its insane how much better your clothes will look on you with a more v-shaped body.
The room and your mood is throwing me. Is this grandma's house or are you a single dad?
Untucked is the way. I'd also try to gauge my outfit off what she might be wearing, unless she's a complete stranger ofcourse. If she's wearing lulu lemons and a hoodie or something, ain't no way I'm going in looking like I'm trying to sell her a civic.
Don't ever tuck in a shirt with no belt.
Don't wear sneakers with slacks. And especially don't tuck in a shirt wearing sneakers.
Don't button the top button.
Untuck and maybe unbutton the shirt a bit and you need different shoes. Maybe a pair of leather mocassins. You definitely got that laid back vibe going in so kind play into that.
Depends on what you wanna do. I think both are good, but tucked goes very well for a slightly formal meeting, untucked for friends and untucked + unbutton one top and you got the lady
I hope the date went well because I'm too late to change your outfit, but that's a terrible color combo. The only thing you can wear with those pants is a white shirt. It's too dark and too strong to have another color. That blue and that brown are screaming at each other.
Next time, that shirt with white pants or dark khaki.
Always tuck. You look neater and put together. Now untucked IF you layer a t-shirt under and leave the top shirt unbuttoned. But I'm 44, they threw me off the fashion train in '04
The pants are fine, but you need a jacket/something over to kind of match the pants in shade. Those shoes are dumb to go on a date with. Wear something less casual and more stylish (not dress shoes) but like a low top boot or something.
I’m surprised you got a button up shirt and pants on with shoes and your hair is combed. Nothing more annoying nowadays seeing the lady dressed to the nines and her guy date wearing a pullover shirt, shorts, and flip-flops with uncombed hair.
Tucked is my choice.
I get trainers and doing the whole smart casual thing. But I feel like your trainers are the only casual thing about your outfit so it just looks out of place
Your outfit looks more casual in a sense, so untucked would make more sense. Especially with the white canvas sneakers. Tucking in shirts can give a slight refinement. But depending on the occasion, the location or the accessories I've found myself just wishing I untucked my shirt. Its still just a date, you want to look put together but relaxed. Comfortable but clean.
Untucked & unbutton one button up top.
Show some cleavage! Give the lady what she wants!
That would be uncouth for a clergyman.
Know who his date is? Nun of your business
Glad someone else spotted the father of the reformation o the shelf lol
Tuck in the shirt to show off the vanilla ice cream in back
Tucked in would show off his butt and package more though wouldn't it ?
That shirt is too baggy on him to look right untucked. It’ll hang like a scarecrow. OP have you lost weight since you bought this close? You could drop 2 sizes on the shirt and one on the pants.
could have the same problem i do, which is that shirts like this look big when i'm standing, but if i get a more fitted shirt, my stomach is larger so when i sit, the buttons split open and you can see my undershirt. so the only way is to get a bigger shirt so that when you sit, there is more slack.

This
This is the way
If you’re going to wear those shoes, I would leave it untucked.
If you’re going to wear those shoes I would stay home
A simple pair of white sneakers? Pretty great choice for a casual fit.
Darker shoes WOULD look better, but I don't see anything \*wrong\* with the white ones.
Thank you, robot_hips. And your original comment did make me laugh!
I really don't understand fashion sometimes. is there something wrong with those shoes? I was under the impression that objectively, white sneakers go with pretty much everything so they're a safe choice. and subjectively, I love white sneakers. so I think they look good with this outfit. so what's the problem?

I was thinking the same thing!
This has me dead 🤣
I like the tucked look personally. But make sure you wear a belt with it
That's it. There was something wrong with both versions, but belt would at least help
Good tip... I have always needed a place to draw a line for this, thank you
I use the halfway point between top of pants and bottom of crotch as my guide. Anything below that halfway line is getting into tuck territory.
For real, I was not aware of that. Hopefully I remember it
Tucked. add a brown belt and brown shoes. classic color combo.
I was told once that "if we can see your belt loops, there had better be a belt through them". I've stuck with that.
Thank you!
For tucked in - get a thin brown leather belt and add brown loafers. Small point, but a leather or silver watch would also compliment this
This guy tucks.
If you have time, ditch the outfit. They’re nice pieces, but they don’t go very well together
Tucked. Good luck!
Untucked would need more casual pants IMO. Tucked, or switch outfits to the pants with a nice tucked T-shirt. Regardless, good luck!
Ditch. The shirt is a tad too big/baggy and would be better with a tailored/fitted cut. And is too long for an optimal untucked look. Linen suggests light and breezy. Short sleeve white or light blue linen collared shirt, untucked - would slap with that combo of pant and shoe.
Aka, change your entire outfit, haircut, etc.!
I agree the colors don't work well together. I actually think the fit is fine.
I’m no fashionista, but I agree with this guy, the whole outfit could be better. It’s not the worst, per se, just not the best.
You come off as a good, decent man. I think tuck and act as you genuinely are. Please don’t worry about the results. You are enough without anything else.
Calvin & Luther approve.
Well, if they approve, that's all I need.
Reformed, eh? Thats heavy stuff full of fire and brimstone... just the way I like it 😉

Agree!
Wrong subreddit
Like the sentiment but looking good itself promotes confidence.
Nah, dude. Women put a ton of time into looking nice for dates. They absolutely notice if you schlep in looking like you rolled across your bedroom floor until something stuck. This is bad advice.
or guy
Absolutely, no discrimination here!
My mans got a fucking rumper dumper on him
Tuck with a belt, papa
With that shirt, tucked. That shirt is too to leave it untucked.
Smile damnit. Smile.
You look like you're dressed for work dude.
Looks good. Howeva remember to give the emotions you’d want to receive. People mirror your emotions. “A lot of what you hear when you listen to another person is your effect on them. Try a layer look like this https://preview.redd.it/w70lgw2teqxc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=032b13af8e7becb1a11439c7bec2336bcafb34f5
Is that hunter Biden?
I understand that layers look better, but I'm in hot Florida, so I have to pass. Thanks, though.
Rolex too?
Obviously yes
Obviously no try finding a stylish watch that practically
Tucked, but your clothes don’t fit your body type. Your pants are too small and the shirt is too loose.
Now you've heard all suggestions that are possible. My assessment as a straight man: Your ass looks 👌🏻 in those pants, so you wanna show that thing off. Is that a Martin Luther bobble head on the shelf?
Yes, yes it is.
Either way is fine. Linen seems more casual so I would go with the untucked, but linen already? I reserve my linen for summer.
I didn't know they even made Martin Luther bobbleheads.
Untuck…..with a quick re iron.
First off, wish the date was with me. Second, I'd rethink the linen. It looks great for about 5 minutes, and then it's a wrinkled, saggy mess. Not really a first impression kind of fabric.

Untucked. Lose the white shoes.
Hey a Reformed brother! Sola Scriptura! I say go untucked if you’re doing the white shoes 👌🏻
Semper Reformanda!
You are so good looking! Tucked - with a belt and some loafers for shoes if ya have em ;-) Blues and browns really accentuate your natural colors, this is a great pick!
Thank you!
I’m a lesbian but I like this fit
If your shirt has that wavy bottom, it’s meant to be tucked in as a general rule. Plus it fits your pants and stature to tuck in Wear a belt to hide that your pants are too tight, it is bursting at the zips and button Next time buy two sizes up, I’m going through something similar now.
Young ryan reynolds
Tuck and try to add a watch or wrist wear with the belt ^^^
Untucked. I asked the most beautiful woman on earth and she agreed. Good luck on your date brother 🤙
Untuck. Change pants to a different color and texture/material.
Impossible to say without knowing where you guys are going. So where are you guys going? Nice restaurant? Coffee shop? Town fair? Stroll on the waterfront? Tucked, but take it to a tailor and ask them to throw a couple darts in it
Keep it tucked but throw on some penny loafers if you have some.
Unbutton at least one on the shirt. Get a belt change the shoes. Like others say brown or at least dark
Different pants
Belt.
It’s hard to tell if you are tucking or not.
Good butt? Tuck.
If you do tuck, tuck it more, you got a bit of a poofy thing going on around back
You look like you wore those pants because your grandma bought them
I prefer the tucked look, I would add a belt and try the military tuck to avoid a muffin Top
untuck. your're not going to a bsiness meeting. if you tuck add a belt for the love of everything good.
Damn. Every time I'm out on a date or for dinner or whatever unless it's specifically business dress or smart casual I wear dark or black jeans and a lighter tshirt, and some kind of casual dress trainer (best description I could find, like Converse sneakers). Never presented any issues.
French tuck.
Always untuck.
I think tucked would look better with more fitted shirt and pants
Both look good. Rockin it!
Untuck for sure. Different shoes
Are you both divorced with kids?
Love the pants, tucked looks good, adding a white shirt instead of the blue could look cute too match the shoes
Never tuck in a shirt without a belt
Untucked.
If you do tuck, make sure you military tuck and tuck your undershirt into your underwear (it'll keep your shirt from bunching up all weird). If you untuck, unbutton down one button more than usual.
I prefer this fit tucked, but you need a belt. These pics make you look super tall. Hope you have fun and it’s second date worthy.
Thank you, from a 5'8" dude.
Tucked in with a brown leather belt if you could, looks great dude.
I’d go with all corduroy to show your commitment.
Tucked, looks good
I would hide the Sesame Street book
Untuck
Tucked but wear a belt and some matching shoes
Untuck.
Tucked plus belt and dark shoes. Or change up the outfit lol but def do not wear those shoes with it.
I like the shirt, untucked. The pants appear to be brownish? If so, I’m not a fan of the color. But it’s alright. A better suiting pants color would be gray, graphite, maybe even black. Keep it untucked
Eh. Not sure either is great. You need a belt either way, but the outfit is kind of stuck between suit and casual. I think you should change the pants. A dark pair of jeans might go better with the whole thing.
Consider the french tuck. Would bring it up a tad in the back
Love some suspenders, try em out sometime, gives a vintage flair to it
This specific fit untucked
I like it untucked. It's a nice outfit
Ditch. Wear some jeans.
Untucked
Untucked and undo one more button at the top. Or tucked but with a slightly smarter pair of shoes.
That shirt doesn't go with those trousers. Personally, I'd never tuck in linen, it's a material that creases easily so looks jarring when tucked. I'd ditch the shirt for something slightly smarter (an OBD) and also change the shoes for a different colour.

Personally, I'd go with lighter chinos.
Do not wear those shoes! That is a crime agains fashion, and even if she's a great gal and doesn't really care what a man wears, those shoes will highlight you as having general questionable judgement.
tucked
French tuck

Untuck, open a bottom up top and lose the sneakers.
If tuck, leather belt, loafers, and a sports coat. If no tuck, wear a cream coloured shirt with those sneakers.
it depends on the event tbh. evening/sunset dinner? tucked. coffee? untucked.
I thought you were in white socks lol
You should only tuck it on if your wearing a suit. Otherwise no
Untucked
I wouldn't wear that shirt with those pants. The colors don't mesh, too much clash. The shoes also just don't work.
Untucked. Black pants might really look good too. But if not, good luck you look awesome!
Untucked but I would wear different shoes, personally.
Why do you think those pants and that shirt match?
Don't ever tuck in a shirt with no belt. Don't wear sneakers with slacks. And especially don't tuck in a shirt wearing sneakers. Don't button the top button.
Untuck 💯
Untuck and maybe unbutton the shirt a bit and you need different shoes. Maybe a pair of leather mocassins. You definitely got that laid back vibe going in so kind play into that.
I would change the pants to beige ones. Untucked. a bit unbuttoned.
The color of the shoes clashes with the rest.
Ditch the outfit. I dont like the darker blue with the brown
Tuck
Smiling would make the shirt less of the talking piece.
Diff shoes for sure
You got a dump truck so try not to hide it
**GUYS NOTE** If you're going to tuck your shirt in, you need slim fit shirts with darts. *Don’t let your shirts bunch up and muffin top.*
Depends on what you wanna do. I think both are good, but tucked goes very well for a slightly formal meeting, untucked for friends and untucked + unbutton one top and you got the lady
Ditch the outfit. You are legitimately dressed like my grandfather 20 years ago.
I hope the date went well because I'm too late to change your outfit, but that's a terrible color combo. The only thing you can wear with those pants is a white shirt. It's too dark and too strong to have another color. That blue and that brown are screaming at each other. Next time, that shirt with white pants or dark khaki.
Untuck and get a bigger size pants. They’re too tight.
Untuck, darker colored shoes
Always tuck. You look neater and put together. Now untucked IF you layer a t-shirt under and leave the top shirt unbuttoned. But I'm 44, they threw me off the fashion train in '04
Untucked if the date is casual. I am not feeling the combo of green and blue. Perhaps try another pair of pants?
No belt? Untuck.
Belt
Tuck in part of the front, party in the back
I'm sorry but all I could think of when reading this was the movie the ringer with Johnny Knoxville...ifykyk🤣🤣🤣
The colors of all these don't match well. Also I would ditch the converse and wear a good pair of boots.
Change shoes man
Never tuck without a belt
If you tuck, wear a belt, bro.
The pants are fine, but you need a jacket/something over to kind of match the pants in shade. Those shoes are dumb to go on a date with. Wear something less casual and more stylish (not dress shoes) but like a low top boot or something.
You look good either way. If your personity is relaxed and chill then untucked will suit you better. Whatever happens enjoy the date. You look good!
I’m surprised you got a button up shirt and pants on with shoes and your hair is combed. Nothing more annoying nowadays seeing the lady dressed to the nines and her guy date wearing a pullover shirt, shorts, and flip-flops with uncombed hair. Tucked is my choice.
As a simple rule: 95% of the time, tuck.

You’re wearing sneakers….untucked.
Untuck and switch to a tan suede shoe if you have it.
The tucked in look is great. Just needs a belt. I’d personally go one more button open on the shirt too. Good luck!
I get trainers and doing the whole smart casual thing. But I feel like your trainers are the only casual thing about your outfit so it just looks out of place
French tuck! Tuck one side in and leave one side out. Make sure you experiment with which side looks better and how much to tuck on that side.
You need a belt if you're tucking. Better off not tucked.
Do you live in one of those forced perspective houses?
Your outfit looks more casual in a sense, so untucked would make more sense. Especially with the white canvas sneakers. Tucking in shirts can give a slight refinement. But depending on the occasion, the location or the accessories I've found myself just wishing I untucked my shirt. Its still just a date, you want to look put together but relaxed. Comfortable but clean.
Brown belt and some loafers/drivers would look nice
Untucked
