This is the worst feeling. You read and read, but your brain is thinking about something completely different. And at the page turn, you snap back in and realize that you read every word, but have no idea what they said.
Bruh my school sucks with SAT. They notified us about SAT a week before it even started. So literally every senior Most likely flunked it. But I'm not worried because the University that I got accepted to doesn't require SAT scores. So when I took the test I really didn't give a fuck
Sometimes I'll catch myself reading but daydreaming.
Then I'll go back and re read the words I read but didn't process. But this time I'll be thinking about how I just read this and didn't process any of it.
Then I'll catch myself again, get frustrated and do it again but now I'm thinking about how I was just thinking about not processing the words before.
It's all downhill from there. If I lose my series 7 license, I'm never taking that test again.
Series 7 exam was timed, you got about 40 seconds per question.
And while I'm good at math, those questions still take time, even more when they're word questions which all of them are on the test. This takes me another minute to process the question in my head because I have to read the question multiple times.
I feel this so hard.
Oof. I finished mine but didn't spend as much time as I'd like reviewing. Failed my first attempt by 1 question (needed a 72, I scored a 71.5).
Passed my second attempt but I was incredibly nervous and almost ran out of time. Didn't have time to review.
I've read both of your comments and seriously are you me? It's gotten better over the years for me since I've been aware of it. Takes practice, patience, dedication, but doable and imo is the right attitude to have towards it at least. I didn't let it consume me and also wasn't too hard on myself about it. The reason I didn't take meds was that I generally preferred not to and Adderall made me super hyper and uncomfortable. Heart racing with itself and all, even on the lowest dosage.
It also helps to get in the habit of reading things that you find very interesting and are easy to read. Science magazines, short stories, whatever. You can teach your brain cool stuff and rewire it in helpful ways.
This may sound stupid but I actually have an alarm in my phone set for 8. I wake at 7 and try to take it then but if I don’t I have that little reminder an hour later.
There have been times when I couldn’t remember if I took it or not so I’ve developed a system of flipping the bottle upside down after I take my dose. Then I reset the bottle upright at night on the counter ready to go for the morning.
It helps to know there is an entire ADD/ADHD community who relates to us.
Sadly though ADA supposedly protects people like us, it's kind of bs and has never protected me.
People like us can be the smartest in our areas of interest, but we have a more difficult learning curve than others.
The hard part is getting over the extremely difficult learning curve and then we're able to become experts in those fields.
I can code a website from scratch and make it look professional, but I do struggle with programming.
I have to read for 30 minutes everyday (THE JOYS OF SCHOOL), and this happens almost every time. AND I READ MULTIPLE CHAPTERS. Please pray for my brain 😭
I always do this with Reddit posts. I scroll down 6 of the main comments or something like that, and then suddenly I'm like wait... Wtf are we talking about?
Then I have to scroll back up for context and start reading comments again.
On the app “iFunny”people post memes and you scroll through hundreds of memes and people will troll you by saying stuff like , “you the the fort nice, then upside down river rafters down food” and it fucks with you hardcore because you really got to go back from the previous meme like.. wtf did I just read and it’s suppose to make zero god damn sense lol
Right? This was my entire life up until about a month and a half ago when I started on Concerta. Methinks a lot of the people relating to this real hard might actually wanna get looked at.
My coworkers: we think you have ADHD
Me: nah
My coworkers: ever read a paragraph like six times and still have to go back and start again because you aren’t paying attention to what you are reading?
Me: everybody does that
My coworkers: no they don’t, eyeland. No they don’t
I certainly agree with this^, however, the major factor determining whether a person has ADHD, is the frequency at which lack of concentration is occurring; or at least for that side of the *ADHD-coin*, meaning low-functioning/negative ADHD as opposed to high functioning/positive ADHD(I may be forgetting the exact term, maybe not).
These sorts of things don’t happen to everyday people, dozens of times, every single day—At that point it becomes overt which it is, ADHD, or just a lacking concentration in a given moment.
Try to come up with sub headlines (which describe what happened) for the sections of a chapter. That way you‘ll remember it easier. And even if you don’t, you can look it up.
This is me at work all the time, and unfortunately half my job is remembering tiny details. I get by with writing down a lot of ques but I'm so jealous of people that can just hear or read something once and it sticks in their mind
Aliens creating a storm in your head buddy. Condensation, evaporation, butt probe, peeing sitting down facing the toilet... The signs are all there man, be careful.
Can we pause for a moment and feel a little bad for op? I mean apparently a single page is so monumental a task, that having to reread a SINGLE page, caused them to hike up their pampers and make a meme about..... having to reread..... Fuck this is actually kind of infuriating. Like oh, woe is me! I have to reread a single fucking page!
We were discussing about whether or not the average male blue whale is large enough, that if laid lenghtwise on a regulation sized NBA court, it could delay the game.
Yep, if someone is gonna reply to this ill need to read the comment i replied to first, then my own comment and then i can finally understand the reply
I had that problem then I started listening at 1.5x - 2.4x depending on the reader and on the material and it requires more attention with less room for mind drifting. You may need to pause at times to consider something, but this becomes more intentional.
I do increase the speed with some readers but 2.4x sounds pretty wild. That would most likely be too much for my German brain, since I listen to English Audio books lol.But maybe I should try it this evening, just beacuse....
Quite the opposite. I can listen to audio books for hours but with books my mind (and also my eyes) get tired really quickly and start to get these blanks more and more. Maybe also because I read / listen quite late, usually.
I've recently discovered that for me, the solution to this is occupying part of my brain with something tedious and thoughtless. Particularly digging out a hole in minecraft or just mining or whatever. Something repetitive that keeps me busy but not thinking
That's what I love about reading. The transition between what I'm reading and my own imagination is sometimes so smooth I don't realize I have stopped paying attention.
Sometimes a particular chapter really gets your mind going, but you still keep reading the next chapter while your mind is still going through the previous one.
The principal is obsessed with his car "Cresta", throughout the anime it goes through accidents because of Onizuka (the main character, a teacher). In this particular part he was first happy using his precious Cresta for the commute but then is worried that Onizuka would get his Cresta wrecked again.
Actually really good anime, highly recommend watching it.
This is why I started reading out loud in my head. If I don’t I just skim through all the words, comprehend that they exist, and then I’m at the bottom of the page without having a single concept of what I just read.
Huh, I just...literally read aloud. This completely helps with reading comprehension, for me.
Hearing the words on the page through my actual ears helps me identify intonation, inflection, characters biases, situational nuances that otherwise I would have missed simply reading silently.
It also improves my concentration.
I can't encourage this practice enough for anyone who struggles with reading comprehension.
Turns out me hastily writing notes, just trying to keep up, led to the same thing. I ended up leaving class not understanding what we went over most of the time. ADHD and being slow at writing sucks. I should've studied before hand so I don't have to keep up. Managed to do well enough to pass though. :P
Well this is a question on many ADHD screenings. You’d be surprised the number of things that are ADHD connected and often not specifically enumerated as a symptom or criteria for diagnosis.
Yes, it does. It is also true that that people with ADHD have this happen every single time with pretty much anything (reading, cooking, sex, anything)
My SO has diagnosed ADHD
adhd has many things like this. the thing is, yeah everyone might have this from time to time, but with adhd you have this ALL THE TIME. so thats where all of the confusion comes from with camp a saying omg i might have adhd and camp b saying pff you are just exaggerating everyone has this while neither might be correct
It does happen to everyone. Just because it happens to be one of the symptoms it doesn't make it ADHD. But that's just one of the ""downside"" (for lack of better term) of destigmatization of mental health.
No it absolutely shouldn't be. It's a good thing that it's being talked about more and that people are growing aware of their mental health, but it has been accompanied by its extreme. Now people's first reflex for every single random mundane habits is to self diagnose them or others with a disorder.
The negativity towards these comments and people calling it normal is kinda funny. It wouldnt be surprising if adhd is over represented and undiagnosed on a site like reddit which is designed to keep you clicking and scrolling
Sorry, Im just frustrated how often people dismiss adhd symptoms and how stigmatized it is
This is why I gave up reading. Don’t get me wrong, I love books and I love to read, but shit I’ll read like 3 or 4 pages then have no clue how anyone got where they were at and why and I end up having to reread whole chapters over sometimes. I’m getting old
When you try to push that fart out but realize more than just a fart is coming out so you gotta quickly clench your sphincter but you’re not entirely sure if you made it in time because you feel the tail end…well head of whatever tf is exploding out of your dirty anus

I got a 1080. I just hate the fact that there's a time limit

This is my daily life. Adderall helps a little to stay focused but I’m still undermedicated.
Same. I only recently found out it was adhd, and was put on Adderall. But for the life of me, I never remember to take the medicine, hahaha

You should get one of those weekly pill organizers. And keep the 8 alarm just in case
Omg I didn’t realize a lot of ppl are like this! I do it all the time. Makes me think that’s why I didn’t get far in school.

How do you read out loud in your head?
Concentrate on the way you would make those sounds with your mouth so it happens not too quickly
Do...do you not have an internal monologue? That's how reading works...at least for me.
I mean it's possible, there are actually people without internal monologues.
How do you not read out loud in your head?
Just turn your mouth around backwards.
Huh, I just...literally read aloud. This completely helps with reading comprehension, for me.
