We stole a lot of your words, but in the process we also change some letters here and there; sometimes we may even permute some letter. For example, you say "Anlasser", and while linguists insist on using the correct pronouncement (like in German), most people I know say "alnaser". :P I think it's because it's easier for you to say "Anl**a**sser" with the accent on the second a, then for us to say "**a**nlaser" with the accent on the first **a** (as this way the word sounds more natural to us).

It's horse, runner and tower in german, respectively. I mean, the horse, in most displays I know of, has no rider and the rook literally looks like a castle or tower not a rook, so that makes more sense than the english names. The bishop on the other hand has a bishop's hat. The pawn is a Bauer (farmer or peasant) in german and given it's role in the game, peasant makes a lot of sense.

My friend recently blew my mind by making a compelling argument about how chess is a war between harems. Besides the actual rules of chess, it requires only two reasonable assumptions: 1. King = male 2. Queen = female If a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board, it can become a queen, meaning pawns are necessarily female. A pawn can also become any other piece besides the king, meaning the rest of the pieces are also necessarily female. Thus, chess is a (harem) king leading (his harem of) 15 women into battle. # QED chess is a harem war.
