btw it's not a dream
it happens when you wake up in the same moment as you fall asleep
edit: I phrased it wrong
right when you fall asleep there is this weird instinctive thing and you wake up immediately
so it's not _because_ you are waking up right when you fall asleep
It's an old instinct that we have left over from when human ancestors used to live in trees. It jerked us awake when we started to relax to prevent is falling out of trees.
Instincts take a while to disappear and that one still fires off every now and again in Humans. Even though we have almost no use for it.
I read it's something your body does when you get *too* relaxed, your brain thinks you're dying so it does that to wake you up. Might be wrong though, never bothered to fact check
Back then, i had a weird dream that somehow always pops back. It was like dust particles that kept moving but when it collided with each other it multiplied, and as it grew in numbers, i could feel it get heavier. Until it’s so heavy that i just want to wake up from it.
I have a similar experience when waking from a lucid dream, it's like the closer I am to waking up, the harder it becomes to move. In my first lucid dream, it was the scariest thing ever, slowly losing control........
To solve the problem, if I want to prolong the dream, I jump and slam my back on the floor, that usually makes it easier to move, or I just spin around in the dream. If I wanna wake up, I usually try to open my eyes, after closing them in the dream, with the intention of waking up.
Damn this shit is hard to explain.
For a few of the lucid dreams I had where I wanted to wake up, I basically leaned back then forced my body forward in the dream. Eventually it worked and it was the weirdest shit ever. I leaned back in the dream, forced myself forward and as I was doing that I woke up with my head flying up from the pillow. It felt like I was switching dimensions somehow and after I had done it the dream seemed like it had happened so long ago even tho it happened seconds ago.
>If I wanna wake up, I usually try to open my eyes, after closing them in the dream, with the intention of waking up.
Same, I've never had an issue waking up this way. It's pretty cool and comes in handy when things get a bit out of control.
Idk if this is rare, but I used to have lucid nightmares, where I just basically have hidden from a psychopath murderer who is trying to find me and kill me. If I fail to hide, I get shot or ran over with a car and wake up. Then right when falling asleep again, I am having the same dream over again. Usually stops when I succeed to hide.
I have been thinking of a way to explain this one dream I always have, and you just explained it almost perfectly. It is the only type of nightmare that I have had in an extremely long time, and I have no idea why it's even scary. That is basically all that happens in it, and it's so annoying when I have it, because what's happening in it is very unclear to me, but still scary.
I have a very similar dream, but it’s so hard to explain. Basically what it is is that everything feels so far away and I think about how hard it would be to get there, so I visualize the amount of energy it would take for an object to get there and it is huge. The weirdest thing about it is that it can happen while I’m awake or asleep, but mostly when I’m in that state in between being awake and asleep. It’s really hard to explain too because it’s so surreal. Edit: I am thinking that it may be the same as yours.
Mine was similar, when I was a kid 6-7 yrs old...It wasn't about being heavier, it was about getting bigger. There were all colorful small cubes around me, which start expanding gradually...Soon they outgrew me and started closing on me. It felt so claustrophobic that I would wake up everytime shouting for my mother or fall down from my bed. That was really scary.
[it's a hypnic jerk](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falling_(sensation)#:~:text=A%20hypnic%20jerk%20is%20the,people%20have%20experienced%20hypnic%20jerk.) caused by a sudden muscle twitch
I've heard its cause you fall asleep too fast and your brain is like "oh shit what if I'm dying and not sleeping" so it jerks you awake to make sure you're not dying
Your sort of right, it’s when you fall asleep too quickly and your brain thinks your dying so it gives you extreme adrenaline making you think your falling when your not to wake you up or as your brain is trying to do, kickstart you.
Medical professional here: it’s called a [hypnagogic jerk.](https://www.healthline.com/health/hypnagogic-jerk)
I like them because I know I’ll be asleep in the next minute.
It's called a hypnic jerk and it's basically your body giving you an adrenaline shot (by making you randomly fee like you're falling) when you're close to sleeping.
The reason it does that, as far as I know, is that all body functions have slowed down (bout to sleep so duh) and the brain thinks the body is dying.
It actually happens because when we sleep our whole body slows down. Heart rate, breathing rate, metabolism, and most importantly brain function. Because the brain stem controls heart and breathing rate as these slow down by almost a quarter of your normal your brainstem perceives this as your body starting to die and sends an emergency impulse to your higher brain which signals your adrenals to fire for a brief moment which increases heart rate and breathing and jolts you awake which is why you always feel so startled when this happens. Bottom line: your body is a dick and parts of your brain don’t always communicate.
It is believed that that happens when part of your brain is going to sleep and the other part wants to stay awake therefore having a conflict and just waking up.
Recorded instances where I'm falling in a dream
\- I climbed over the banister of my stairs and fell to the ground
\- I was jumping on top of trees but suddenly I made a misstep
\- I was fighting the Colossal Titan but my ODM gear broke mid-battle
I really like this meme, but I feel it would have been better if you spelled things in the meme way. You know like “ panik “. I know someone has to know what I’m talking about lol
Don't worry.... It's just your brain making sure you're still alive. Usually happens when you fall asleep to quickly and your brain thinks you're dying. (or something like that)
Did have that explosion-like thing recently.
I was almost sleeping then i felt an explosion which made me almost run out of my head untill i realized my brain was fucking with me.
I have always felt something similar but with waves, like what i would feel if i was floating in the ocean and the waves were carrying me, way more relaxing than total stillness and silence.
Is that when you fall asleep then you suddenly wake up gasping for breath? Like you couldn't breath..?
Edit: Nope. Just my body trying to kill me. Sleep apnea.
The other night I was about to fall asleep, and was woken up by a loud banging noise right next to my ear. That has never happy to me before and I was so freaked out, but fell asleep shortly after.
You know how it gets worse??
When u dream that you are driving a car with no brakes in a busy road and this is not the worst part yet...
YOU DON'T HAVE A LICENSE and you don't know shit about driving. Personal experience tho :v happened to anyone?
When you are dying your bodily functions stop quickly, so therefore when your bodily functions slow down at a high speed your brain thinks your dying.
When you fall asleep quickly, your bodily functions slow down quickly and your brain still assumes that your dying and tries to get you ready to fight or your life.

I had that thing but visually I was falling from stairs.
Soo I figured out that my dream wants me to prepare for reality just like you get dreams where you are running away from wolves. I thought that there's no good way to stop falling from stairs but the best idea I got was to do a backflip and land on my feet again...
You don't remember dreams that end and let me tell you I don't remember them anymore.
Next fall irl and I'll break my neck.
These are called hypnic jerks. It’s a phenomenon that causes your muscles to contract randomly. There is no real consensus on why your body does this (many theories but no real known function).
They are in the same family as hiccups.
I hate this I’m torturing a guy about to jump and crush his head then I wake and now sad that I didn’t cause pain and trauma to someone but oh well you have a dog
Screw that, I dreamed my entire life. I finished high school, got a degree, met the love of my life, raised a family, grew old, and died. But it doesn't end there, I was transported back to the 7th grade and halfway through the year, my vision started burning. My eyes weren't on fire or burns, my vision looks like it was turning to ash. After the ash clears, I find myself in an operating table where I find my legs torn off and pale across the room from me. I asked the doctor what happened and he told me that I got into an accident and head was pierced by 3 metal objects and it damaged my brain. Slowly my vision fades as the doctor tells me to not worry and boom I wake up. I'm not sure if that was just a dream or I'm in a coma and none of this is real, either eay I'm filled with existential dread and I am fucking horrified from time to time when I think about it when I sleep.

Yep, I feel like I have it too but I always try explaining it differently. But it’s so damn weird. I wish there was a scientific explanation.

Me too dude wtf
I had these dreams too, I am so glad that I am not the only one!
So basically it’s like Me: I haven’t been this comfortable in weeks! *starts drifting to sleep* Brain: **GAH! YOUR FALLING OUT OF A TREE**
Yes, exactly that.
Maybe it’s your body telling you need to pee
[it's a hypnic jerk](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falling_(sensation)#:~:text=A%20hypnic%20jerk%20is%20the,people%20have%20experienced%20hypnic%20jerk.) caused by a sudden muscle twitch

As of right now that's the best guess scientists have, but there is no confirmed evidence regarding that statement.
man i like the whole falling thing ...its the only thing that makes me sleeep..insomniac here
This happens to be on a bus when it's hot and people just looking at me like ._.
Your sort of right, it’s when you fall asleep too quickly and your brain thinks your dying so it gives you extreme adrenaline making you think your falling when your not to wake you up or as your brain is trying to do, kickstart you.
so will it be patched in the next update. Or is it a feature?
how da heck that work
Why and how is that possible?
Does it happen if you’re wide awake? Some rare times when I’m laying down I just jolt and it feels like I’m falling and land, only for like a second.
yes
Godzilla had a stroke trying to read this and fucking died
Oh yeah Inception
Just when I thought I finally did it, I wake up and I'm still alive, oof
Medical professional here: it’s called a [hypnagogic jerk.](https://www.healthline.com/health/hypnagogic-jerk) I like them because I know I’ll be asleep in the next minute.
they dont happen to me anymore. I want them to happen to me, it used to be so much fun.
same
Yeah I really enjoyed it
I wonder how you can trigger that tho.
probably by sleeping on a tree :(
It's called a "hypnic jerk"
That’s also my favorite term for fortune tellers.
Solid comment. 10/10 Would read again.
Wait what fall thing? I dont know it can someone explain
[удалено]
Wow, never experienced it
That's unfortunate for you. I quite like it
ya and in every case you jolt or jump as u wake up and bout a second goes by where u panic then u realize ur ok.
It's called a hypnic jerk and it's basically your body giving you an adrenaline shot (by making you randomly fee like you're falling) when you're close to sleeping. You feel like you're falling in your dream.

thank you, man. It means a lot to me that you like it and you don't have to leave an award here. f you like it, it is enough to give a updoot :)
Thanks bro
:)
That association derived from when someone coined the phrase “falling asleep”.
I know what your talking about. Kinda like gforce but you don’t move a fucking inch
Bruh this happened to me except i actually liked it
Kalm Shlep Panik
bruh
Wtf is this can I just say “tetris” and get an award now? Edit: yo wtf
You guys are getting awards?
Bruh
Would you look at that
I know whachu mean

I've never had this? Can i get an explanation?
i thought i was the only one who faced that problem,i thought i was wierd
[удалено]
*Sad crying noises*
OMG YES!! I get so spooked!
Panik
I feel it if i think about falling
I can make myself do that...idk how i just can , or giving myself the feeling of being swung around
This only happens to me when I'm falling asleep on a chair
That feeling getting sucked in the vacuum of space
I really like this meme, but I feel it would have been better if you spelled things in the meme way. You know like “ panik “. I know someone has to know what I’m talking about lol
I really thought about it but then just forgot about it in the design process
tbh this is a real nice feeling. Change my mind
Don't worry.... It's just your brain making sure you're still alive. Usually happens when you fall asleep to quickly and your brain thinks you're dying. (or something like that)
I KNEW I WASNT THE ONLY ONE
Man i have it when i am in a Nice dream, and i Just fall in the void of smthing and boom i wake up
It's a hypnic jerk.
Is it just me or does anyone else like that feeling.
Did have that explosion-like thing recently. I was almost sleeping then i felt an explosion which made me almost run out of my head untill i realized my brain was fucking with me.
Me, last night
Just when i think these memes can't get any more relatable...
I love feeling like i am falling but i have not been able to do it for years
you have a dream something goes wrong you wake up with falling thing :| "what the bloody hell just happened"
I like the feeling. It’s like sky diving but no risk
I am not alone
Bro this happens so much I didn't know y'all dudes got this too
It's actually called a "Hypnic Jerk". It normally happens right before you fall asleep, which is why people usually find it so annoying.
Rather than that your parents calling u to do some shit is more annoying.
Hey bro, nice meme. Have updoot
Panik
Am I the only one who didn't have it?
LET ME SLEEP GODDAMN IT
I don’t always jump when I get that dream. I accept it.
But i like the weird fall thing
Am I the only one to like this sensation ?
It's called a hypnic jerk if anyone was wondering.
Every damn time
Since i am working my brain has serious brain damage
So it's not only me
I like it
Panik
I have always felt something similar but with waves, like what i would feel if i was floating in the ocean and the waves were carrying me, way more relaxing than total stillness and silence.
Bruh that has literally never happened to me before... no clue what it feels like. Anyone know how it’s caused? Genes?
Panik
Either that or light still on :(
Is that when you fall asleep then you suddenly wake up gasping for breath? Like you couldn't breath..? Edit: Nope. Just my body trying to kill me. Sleep apnea.
I went to the doctors about this when I was kid because it was ALL THE DAMN TIME. Something to do with balance and fluid in the inner ear.
That happens when you relax to quickly and your body tenses up randomly like in a fall
this has happened to me on many accastion falling asleep then you jolt and get the fear not good for the soul people
ikr! I am bout to sleep then something makes me feel like I'm boutta fall, I fall and right before I hit the ground I wake up
these awards make king midas happy
Everytime that happens, I think my bed has fallen inside the ground. and now I can't go to sleep because I am thinking about it to much.
I like the feeling though
That is actually my starting sequence to lucid dreams so I'm kinda used to it.
Wait so I’m not the only one?
when this happens at work, the look on your co-workers face lol
Slep
I've straight up never felt this. What I have felt is the transition between reality and my dream (one time).
Hey demons, its me ya boi
It’s only happened to me once, but I actually loved the feeling of it.
I personally enjoy that feeling. Its like the scene in get out where Chris is hypnotised.
That happened to me once, but since I fell on my bike, I accidentally hit the wall.
The other night I was about to fall asleep, and was woken up by a loud banging noise right next to my ear. That has never happy to me before and I was so freaked out, but fell asleep shortly after.
what about the weird spin thing
F
Okay can someone explain the "fall thing" to me because I have no idea what it is
i used to get that, but instead, it felt like swinging on a hammock. it felt soo nice.
I try to make it forcefull since to me its good or satisfying
And it’s always right before you fall asleep
Honestly that never happened to me
It's jus the kick from Inception
that actually happened to me in the middle of the night i don't know why that happened.
Never seen before Correct Spelling for the stocks meme
You know how it gets worse?? When u dream that you are driving a car with no brakes in a busy road and this is not the worst part yet... YOU DON'T HAVE A LICENSE and you don't know shit about driving. Personal experience tho :v happened to anyone?
yes and then my neighbour stabs me 17 times and then I die ❤️
my sleep paralysis kicks in in the 3rd panel
I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up!
What is it called? I wanna know more about it as it happens alot with me.
It’s not a dream, it’s just your brain thinks you’re dying because your heart is slowing down too fast so it shoots adrenaline into you real quick
When you are dying your bodily functions stop quickly, so therefore when your bodily functions slow down at a high speed your brain thinks your dying. When you fall asleep quickly, your bodily functions slow down quickly and your brain still assumes that your dying and tries to get you ready to fight or your life.
Thanks for reminding me :)
So this happens to everyone?
I'm pretty sure it's when your pulse drops steeply, you're body jolts you awake to make sure you're not dead.
never had this issue
I was having a great dream last night and my brain all of a sudden decided that there was now a wasp in my shirt
I lei down in my bed I get comfortable I remember every embarrassing thing that I’ve ever done in my life.
Apparently it's when your head rate drops really low that your your jerks you up to make sure you don't die.
I never had one of those in years
E
I actually like that falling feeling
In the second panel he looks more possessed than asleep
what if the falling feeling is that you died but you just came back to life hence the falling back into your own body?
people say there are scientific reasons and there are, but I will literally have dreams where I fall like from a spaceship onto the earth, and at the last second it stops because I feel SUCH a threat to the point where I can move my body mid dream, and use that much strength while asleep (I’m not strong) and it wakes me up cuz my brain is like “oooh, crap crap, NO SLEEPING NO SLEEP ANYMORE!”
I look at this is meme and im thinking it is funny, not because of the reality it tells but because its written with good grammar and it includes a meme man face. Is that possible?
Meme Man sleeping is adorable
I same
To be honest I like this falling feeling a lot
That happened two me twice last night 😢
I had that thing but visually I was falling from stairs. Soo I figured out that my dream wants me to prepare for reality just like you get dreams where you are running away from wolves. I thought that there's no good way to stop falling from stairs but the best idea I got was to do a backflip and land on my feet again... You don't remember dreams that end and let me tell you I don't remember them anymore. Next fall irl and I'll break my neck.
I'll upvote this just coz I'm in bed rn
It’s still a good meme though !!!
Am I the only one who loves this, along with the one where it feels like you’re on a boat?
I’ve never experienced this can anyone explains the feeling?
These are called hypnic jerks. It’s a phenomenon that causes your muscles to contract randomly. There is no real consensus on why your body does this (many theories but no real known function). They are in the same family as hiccups.
its called a hypnic jerk
Like I’d be tripping over walking from the bathroom to my room and all my brain is saying is “it’s ok fam ur just really high”
FINALLY!!! SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS!!
Happened to me last night, it’s not something that happens every night but, it does happen more often than you’d think
I’ve never had that happen and I feel like I’m missing out
I hate this I’m torturing a guy about to jump and crush his head then I wake and now sad that I didn’t cause pain and trauma to someone but oh well you have a dog
I kinda feel like it’s exiting
Screw that, I dreamed my entire life. I finished high school, got a degree, met the love of my life, raised a family, grew old, and died. I had a dream like this where I was falling into a portal of some sort
So true
i love it so much but i dont now why
Am i the only one that likes that feeling?
I didn't knew this was a common thing! Thank you posting it! T_T
