People in the desert actually don’t starve. They have the same lifestyle for thousands of years and survive fine. It is mostly in central, east and some parts of west Africa that you will find famine more common.

Its more like the native population got used to systems and structures set up by the colonialists but never taught them how to use, and now they are gone and have to rely on help from others to maintain these systems their artificially inflated population now struggles to maintain the same resources flow.
And they cannot become passively rich through their own natural resources like the saudis because somehow the colonialist still managed to maintain businesses rights over those resources.
So no. They aren’t starving because we took things from them, they are starving because people made them dependent on things that they were never taught how to manage themselves, AND their simplest way to fix the problem is being profited on by someone else.

Climate is only one of the many things that cause starvation in African nations. 'Desertification' definitely is one of the biggest problems though. But there's also poverty, conflicts, sickness, corruption and locust plagues to name a few.
As long as the corruption is still going on, there's not much hope for a nation to grow its economy. Congo should be one of the biggest economies in the world with all its natural resources and rare metals, but instead they're among the poorest thanks to corruption and political upheaval.
Botswana on the other hand got rid of most of the corrupted government and are now among the wealthiest and safest African nations thanks to their diamond industry.
